Down in Christchurch with the Squirrel, ABCDF4 and eyespyben. During Covid lockdown, we solved a load of puzzles and decided that this would be a good time to visit. We've enjoyed a few days of good weather and seeing the Canterbury countryside. The caches have been in varying states - some good, some not so much. Our time here has been a blast, and we'd like to thank all COs who have made this adventure possible. Thank you and TFTC.
With ABCDF4, eyespyben, and Gap (of Fap and Gap). Logging all finds as Team HRP (Huntly, Rotorua, Papamoa - Our hometowns)... During Covid-19 lockdown, we solved a truck load of puzzles around Christchurch - Canterbury region. No use thrashing the old grey matter for no cause - We decided we should make good on this handiwork...
There are lots of interesting trails and geoart surrounding Christchurch. What you aren’t told is how far flung some of these caches actually are. Some beforehand advice would have been great, so here are some of my notes... You’re welcome!
1. Mobile coverage is patchy, especially in those quiet, rural areas where it was most needed. Saving caches to offline might show that you are prepared and organised...
2. There are many dusty metal roads on the trails. The car will get messy, and your hair will feel like cardboard at the end of the day...
3. Suitable clothing and footwear are essential. You will climb in and out of hedges, gorse, and other rough stuff. You might get scratched, cut to shreds, and bleed a lot. It’s not advised to wear your brand new jacket on the day...
4. Take lots of food and drink. You’ll probably be head down, tail up and not realise you haven’t eaten until late afternoon. There are very few shops or gas stations out there...
5. Make sure that you secure keys and wallet and know where these are placed for easy retrieval. A full box of pens might be useful too, especially if you’re inclined to free some into the wild...
6. Know the difference between left and right, and north, south, east, and west. Turning right and heading north will not get you to South Christchurch quickly.
7. Look with girl’s eyes rather than boys eyes... Some caches haven’t been found in a while and you might have to get down on your knees to pray.
8. Always be prepared for misleading hints. This is what turns simple caches into D5/T5 hides... “Head height” could mean the cache is positioned at your toes.
9. Have a sense of humour and like the people you go caching with. It’s going to be a very long day, and you might want to hurt someone during the journey...
10. Make sure you can operate your phone/device and it doesn’t crash when you most need it...
11. Learn to cut and paste logs because you’re going to repeat this function so often when logging all of your finds.
12. Above all else, have fun and be kind...
We have another one of those punishing plans to cache until we drop - An early morning start with the hope that we'll finish at a reasonable time... From South Christchurch, we took Highway 1 and crossed the Waimakariri River into Northern Christchurch... A helpful hint and a quick find. Thanks Sallies and TFTC.

After puzzle solving in the Canterbury region along with ABCDF4 we were invited to join Fap (from Fap & Gap) and Squirrel Nutcase to a week long caching adventure in the Canterbury area. With flights and accommodation booked were off, all met up in ChCh. and many hard dusty Kms travelled and many caches found, I think the Squirrel has said it all in his brief. Many thanks for the placements and Cos for bringin us to the very pleasant areas we travelled in to your region

A beautiful sunny winter day in Canterbury so off I went to check some of our caches around Oxford/Rangiora. 175km driven, 15litres of petrol used, 21 caches checked/serviced, 1 cache found - in about 4 hours. This one was okay, just put in another log sheet and pencil. Rodney.
We decided to travel out to Oxford and back, checking out our railway caches. We took our grandson Zach to actually find the containers. This one had been stripped by Smelly Toes so we replaced everything before putting it back in its hiding spot. Rodney and Iris.
Drove out to the Waimak Gorge and back today to check out some of our own caches. Took brother-in-law Donald for a ride (Nufc). Checked out fourteen caches, and this was number ten. Cache was fine! Rodney.
Found this one today in company with the cache owner, my brother-in-law! Thanks. Don.
Jess.daphne and I decided to go on another caching mission in order to get 50 caches to get the final Hidden Creature souvenir. I also wanted to take my new car on her maiden caching mission. We all had a fantastic day in the sunshine and howling wind, getting dusty and windswept; team Jeje riding in Gigi. Sorry for the generic logs but TFTC.
Found today with injeanious, we got around 50 caches today in order to find all of the hidden creatures. We signed the logs as JeJe to save time and space. Tftc!
Decided to ride out to Oxford and back to do maintenance on some of our railway line caches. Started with this one since we had got as far as Waverley on 26 August. We removed the piece of paper, with five logs on it, from the container and checked that the actual mini logsheet was still inside the little train - as the cache description says! In this series we have lost about ten railway stock with logsheets inside and people still insist there is no logsheet, even though there is! We have even had people signing the piece of paper telling them that it was not a logsheet, but to find the actual logsheet!!! I guess it takes all sorts - including those who can read and follow instructions and those who can't. Still we gave kept the series alive just the same because of the continued interest. Rodney and Iris.
Found the cache but no log! Put in a temp one with bag. TFTH and the history, really interesting.
Pleas read previous notes and logs about using the proper logsheet inserted in the train!!!
Begins our holiday in NZ in Christchurch, we came from Italy to find our son who lives there for two years.
After being in the North Island in Wellington area to hunt for historical cache and spending a few days at sea while finding bad weather without being able to take to the beach, here we are back in Chch, we decide to resume the trail already made in part two weeks ago , we reach Oxford and back.
Thanks for the laying and maintenance of this trail
Greetings from Italy

Jumped out of the car for a quick find. On a 11 day caching trip around the south island. Log signed as b&p.Tftc Sallies. Find # 3410
We decided to take our new cachemobile out for a ride to Oxford and back, checking up on our two railway series caches. We found five caches on the way as well. This cache was still in good condition except for the fact that far too many myopic geocachers have written on the warning sheet instead of finding the actual logsheet - someone even put in a proper logsheet. Please use the actual logsheet inserted in the engine!!! . Rodney and Iris.
Found today with BDP82. My 300th cache so celebrated by leaving a virtual treasure trove of diamonds. Thanks for the cache.
A rainy Sunday and it was time to get the rain coats on and find some treasure, quick easy find by Number 1 after the hint confused Dad.
With a few more days of holidays left we decided to head south again and find some caches we didn't have time to look for last week, plus some more off the beaten track. This was one of 52 found today.
Thank you to all CO's who made this possible.
Thank you to all CO's who made this possible.
Our recent multi day Canterbury cache raid was so successful we decided to have another one before the holidays finished. Again we got stabbed, prodded, pricked and scraped by the variety of hedges the region is so famous for. And of course we can now hold our breath a lot longer. A skill well worth developing to avoid breathing in part of the road surface every time a vehicle passes. Just over 200 finds were logged this time and a great time was had finding the caches with a variety of shapes, sizes and placements. A big thank you to all COs who made this possible.
Today may be the day that we complete the set and can calculate the final cool. Tftc and series.
Decided that on my last day of my holiday I'd do a blitz in the area before I fly home tomorrow, now a very tired bunny!
Last one in the series for me- now I am hoping to find the final in the next few days, for the November spelling challenge. Quick find- thanks for the series
After solving an unfound puzzle caches I headed out today to try for the FTF and of course stopped for a few more caches on the way and back. Quick stop. Cheers.
The next on our 210 run finding caches for the day with our team of four- HHSS. Working as a team each doing diff. roles we were able to speed up the find rate quite well and we managed to do about the first 100 with no Did Not Finds but after that the distances increased and the find rate dropped but we still managed to finish the day with 210 cache. The seagnoid has planned etc our route so it was all efficient Thank you to The Seagnoid for this pre work and thank you to the different cache Owners for these great, interesting caches. I just loved the huge chuppa chup and all the veges and fruit. . Thank you for the cache and another smiley face.
[green] Out with Hanknstone, Haydn.seek and thestepahine on an awesome 200+ day. We managed to get 210 caches in 11 hours, an average of 3 minutes each. There were a few awesome caches out there, but mostly it was a blur. Thanks to all the cache owners, and my apologies about the cut and paste!

Hanknstone, Haydn.seek, the Seagnoid and I had a challenge of doing 200 caches in a day. We started at 7:30am and finished around 8:00pm with a total of 200+. Apologies for the copy and pasting of the logs but there were so many we found that it would take so long to write them all up individually! Thank you for the find.
Our team for the Mega weekend was signing as VYV (Vamber, Yorkshirekiwi83 and Vistra). we found quite a few in the short space of time we were together, where I can I will make comments about the cache. We had teamed up back in Auckland and had been busy planning what we were going to target and in what order, of course plans changed even more so when we were down here, but that is part of what makes it fun and I had a great time over the weekend, thanks to all the CO's for placing.

Day 3 in Christchurch and I again teamed up with yorkshirekiwi83 and vamber for another big day of caching. We signed the logs as "VYV" to save time and space on the logs. We made an early start to the day as we knew we would be going for 200 caches. We started with the Lolly Scramble caches (which we had begun the night before) and made our way up to Oxford, before returning to Kaiapoi and working on the Horses 101 series, finding a number of other caches along the way. Apologies for the generic logs, but thank you to all the cache owners for placing these caches!

Another quick find on Day 2 of the Mega, hitting the roads of Canterbury with vistra and yorkshirekiwi83, gathering the caches that the area had to offer. A quick find here, thanks for the hide!
Came down to Christchurch for the 2015 MEGA with a group of caching buddies for the weekend. My first MEGA, and it was fantastic- loved every minute, the caching, the events, meeting other like-minded crazies (sorry, I mean cachers!!!). Our group found 283 caches throughout the course of the of the weekend, so apologies for the cut and paste logs- but it's going to take me hours to log them all!!!! All logs were signed as SEAC (South East Auckland Crew), to reflect out home caching base!
HUGE thanks to all involved in putting on the MEGA event, and also to all of the Chch CO's for the effort gone to in their hides- we found some awesome caches, including fantastic hides, and cleverly done camo.... well done Christchurch, you're an awesome bunch!
Another quick railway line cache... thanks Saliles!

Interesting history around here which seems ideal for a rail-line. Appetite whetted for tour later in holiday, especially if it stays as flat as these surrounds. TFTC.

Part of the “South East Auckland Crew” here for the Christchurch Mega. All logs done as “SEAC”. Sorry for the Generic logs…but when logging 200 in a day it can be a bit much. But thank you so much for placing all these awesome caches
An epic day of caching today, out to achieve 200+ finds in a day while I'm in Christchurch for the Mega event. There was also the lure of a virtual cache down in Peel forest, which isn't really that far from the numbers game along Thompsons track. A great day out and about, revisiting places I haven't been in years, and finding new places along the way. I teamed up with Capperz and Nightowl19 at 0600 in Rolleston, and off we headed in my cache mobile and general all purpose off road land rover. We signed the logs primarily as G C N to save space and time. Sorry about the cut and paste logs, but with over 200 caches to log it's going to take me a while to catch up. Thanks to all the Cache owners for the time taken to place and maintain them, and making it all possible. A nice series this, T F T C
Off to the Mega this weekend and a 2 day pass has been granted for Geocaching purposes. It being a long weekend and all there was definitely a plan to get some caches and keep the numbers ticking along. Finished work at 12.00 and waited for the accompanying nightowl19 to finish her school morning. Pick her up and back home to get changed and a bite to eat before heading down the line. There's an event in Rangiora that we'd like to attend and we need to check into our accommodation. All interspersed with few caches too. Today is the planned 200 plus in a day, to be followed by as many types in a day on Sunday, then back home Sunday arvo. Quite the whistle-stop tour. Weather played fair, we ate take aways all weekend. . . . . . . . . . . shameful parenting, and had a great time. Even got to cache with G H 6 7 1 0 too, bonus. We set off at 0600 and were all done by 2000 so not toooo long a day. A few hundred kms driven by G H and in the comfort of his 4 x 4 too.
To all the COs that placed these caches many thanks for facilitating this epic journey and (normally difficult caching target. In Marlborough I've already done so many so big numbers days are nigh on impossible without having to travel out great distances. Most logs were signed G C N being an acronym of our combined caching names. We replaced around half a dozen which were plainly missing on Thompsons Track which will surely help those who follow us.
Apologies for the cut and past logs and last of all T F T C all . Thanks

A plan was hatched way back in April to bring a group of crazy cachers from the South Auckland area for a weekend of lovely caching at the Mega. For most of us it was our first Mega and what a blast we had. From the first event cache at the Airport, surprising one of our group with a birthday trip to the Mega (literally 30min warning to boarding!), meeting lots of like minded people around the Kaiapoi district and to the manic days caching to late, late in the night with our mega flags flying we all had such a great time.
All logs were signed as SEAC South East Auckland Crew. Sorry for the cut and paste log, but all the trails, trads and tricks imagined by all the local CO’s were fantastic.

Found during the Mega weekend on bit of a tiki-tour around the Canterbury back blocks. Great weather, great caches, great fun! Thanks to all the cache owners for putting out and maintaining caches for us to find. All in all, a fun road trip with Boxhill and Yeetrees, we signed many of the logsheets as YGB to save both time and logsheet spaces.

In town for a “Mega” weekend of caching. I joined up with Yeetrees and gonefishing to form Team YGB. I really enjoyed exploring the country roads of Canterbury. We travelled a fair few Kilometres in the 4 days we were here, and had a great time, with a lot of laughs along the way. Good weather, and good company. It doesn’t get much better than that does it.
