This used to be a really nice building, until they decided to build an addition to it in a totally different style. The old library is used for storage, I believe and the local kids use the front patio as a skate park in the evenings.

One of my mama's teachers lived here. She would have a small holiday party for her students at her house, and they would play at the park next door. My mama got to go to one when she was in second grade. We stopped to grab coords and a picture when we were in the park watching fireworks.

Uxbridge Massachusetts has over 50 buildings on the Historic Register plus some historic districts. The Uxbridge Inn at the center of town is within the Uxbridge Common Historic District. The Common dates to 1727 when the Town incorporated. About 100 years later during the building of the Blackstone Canal (also a registered Historic District) the Waucantuck Hotel was open on the south end of the common. Later that building was moved to make room for the larger Windsor Hotel which later became known as the Uxbridge Inn. By the 1960s it was a boarding house, and has had a number of different restaurant and bars operate there. In recent years it was about to be demolished to make room for fast food of pharmacy however a local bank purchased and rehabed to building maintaining its character for the center of town.

The Greek Revival home at 322 East Broadway known as the House of Four Pillars, was built c. 1835. During the pre-Civil War era the house reputedly provided refuge for fugitive slaves who made their way to the Maumee River and through a deep ravine which led to the basement. Arthur Henry, editor of the Toledo Blade and his wife, Maude, a pioneering woman reporter, owned the house briefly in the 1890's. A famous visitor to the house during the Henry's residency was Theodore Drieser who reportedly wrote the first chapters of his controversial novel, Sister Carrie, during his stay. During the early 20th century, the house was owned by John Ormand, a Toledo attorney and Maumee civic leader, who was instrumental in bringing the Carnegie Library to Maumee. After Ormand's death, the house sat empty for several years and fell into disrepair. It was restored to its present grandeur by the William M. Hankins family in the 1950's. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Listed: 1978
Period of Significance: 1700-1749, 1800-1824
Address: 872 Westfield St, Middletown, CT (Middlesex County)
I don't know a lot about the history of this site, however, I chose this location from dozens in the immediate area because I drove by it everyday for at least 10 years on my way to work. It's private property, otherwise I would have gotten better pictures, but I watched how the new owners of the property would take care of and lovingly maintain thier home. So, I thought it was fitting that I could log this home.

Originally the Dallas County Courthouse, located at 109 Union Street in Selma, Alabama, this Greek Revival style building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 (Building #75000310).
Period of Significance: 1825-1849
Housing a succession of schools, hospitals, county government, museums, and civic and social meeting rooms, the Joseph T. Smitherman Historic Building has ties of memory with thousands of families throughout the Black Belt.
The Selma Fraternal Lodge No. 27 of the Free and Accepted Masons erected the massive brick building as a school for orphans and for children of indigent Masons at a cost of $15,000. The school, named The Central Masonic Institute, opened in October, 1848, with an enrollment of 45 pupils, both boys and girls. This educational venture was evidently a financial failure, and the property, which was mortgaged, was lost by the Masonic Order a few years later.
During the War Between the States, when Selma was the arsenal of the Confederacy, the building was converted into a hospital for wounded and ill Confederates. The need for this humanitarian service may have influenced Federal General J.H. Wilson to spare the building when his troops ravished Selma in early April, 1865.
Immediately after the war, Selma civic leaders purchased the property and used it as a lure to attract the county seat to Selma from Cahaba. Their strategy was successful, and in 1866 Selma became the seat of government for Dallas County. County offices were housed in the former hospital from 1866 until the spring of 1902 when the courthouse at the corner of Alabama Avenue and Lauderdale Street was completed.
After county officials vacated the structure, it appears to have remained vacant until possibly 1904 when it again housed a school. The Selma Military Institute, under the control of the Presbyteries of Tuscaloosa and Mobile, had classrooms in the building for some four years until the school moved to what is now the administration building at the United Methodist Children's Home on North Broad Street.
Trustees of the Henry W. Vaughan estate, who had purchased the property from the county for $5,025 in 1904, converted the versatile edifice into a hospital, The Vaughan Memorial Hospital, in 1911. It remained a hospital until 1960 when The New Vaughan Memorial Hospital was ready for occupancy on West Dallas Avenue.
Then the old building stood vacant, target for vandals and vagrants, for almost ten years. It seemed doomed for demolition until Mayor Joe Smitherman was attracted by its proud history and its shabby stateliness. Under his leadership, the city of Selma purchased the property in 1969, with financial support from the Dallas County government, the Selma Housing Authority and a Federal Open Spaces grant, for $82,500.
Open house for the renovated facility, then known as The Historic and Civic Building, was held on May 16, 1971. The name of the building was changed by the Selma City Council in 1979 to The Joseph T. Smitherman Historic Building, honoring the mayor for his role in its preservation and restoration.

The Jason Russell House
7 Jason Street
Arlington, MA
Registered: October 9, 1974
Period of Significance: 1700-1749, 1750-1799
This house, built by Jason Russell in 1740, was the site of the bloodiest battle fought on the first day of the American Revolution, April 19, 1775. As the British forces retreated from Lexington and Concord, they passed through what is now Arlington (then Menotomy) and met some resistance in the form of Jason Russell and the Menotomy Minute Men. 12 Minute Men, including Jason Russell, were killed that day on the front lawn. There are still bullet holes in the house.
There is a reenactment put on each year by the current Menotomy Minute Men. As a bonus we're including some pix from the last reenactment.

NAME: William C. Ralston Home
DATE REGISTERED: 1966
PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANCE: 1870'S
ADDRESS: Notre Dame de Namur University campus
Belmont, CA
The William C. Ralston Home; National Historic Landmark
Of all the lavish summer homes built on the San Francisco Peninsula during the late 1800's, William Chapman Ralston’s home, now called Ralston Hall, is the only one that remains much as it was in the 1870's.
Ralston Hall, a registered National Historic Landmark, is a stunning 55,000 square foot Victorian mansion, completed in 1868 by William Chapman Ralston, founder of the Bank of California. Ralston modified the original Italian villa with Victorian details and touches of 19th century "steamboat Gothic" construction and design, reminiscent of Ralston's early days on the river boats of the Mississippi before his coming to California. The mansion also has a grand staircase overlooked by an opera box gallery from which, it is said, Ralston liked to observe his guests' reactions to his opulent country estate. The delicately etched-glass panes of the front doors and windows dressed in striped awnings give you an indication of what is inside.
One of the famous visitors to the mansion was former President Ulysses S. Grant who visited in 1879.
The colorful past of Ralston Hall included a girl’s finishing school and a sanitarium. Today, Ralston Hall is a favorite spot for weddings, as well as the administrative offices of Notre Dame de Namur University.
If you visit this Landmark during the University’s work hours, take a peek inside the front doors-it is amazing.

Date Added: 1979
Period of Significance: 1750-1799, 1800-1824, 1825-1849, 1850-1874, 1875-1899
The New Hampshire Farm Museum consists of two adjoining farmsteads on 50 acres of land. The Jones Farm and the Plummer Homestead tell the story of the changes in agriculture and rural life over three centuries. These farms were passed down in the same families for more than two hundred years and are outstanding examples of connected farm structures. They also include several out buildings including a blacksmith shop, shoe shop and recently constructed timber frame cider mill. The blacksmith shop enabled farmers to fix broken farm tools, in addition to making shoes for oxen and horses. Most farmers in New Hampshire were subsistence farmers. In their spare time farmers would asssemple shoes in "ten footers" or shoe shops. Shoe bosses would transport raw materials by ox cart and leave shoe parts to be assembled by the farmer in his spare time. Women would also bind shoes, but in the kitchen. In the mid-1800's, many New Hampshire farmers left the Granite State to settle in the far west.

This is the Forty Fort Meeting House in Wilkes Barre,PA. It is right in the middle of the Old Fort Cemetary that has a date of 1777 by it. The church was built in 1804 according to one source but the sign at the entry ascribes it to 1807. It was restored in 1922 by the Colonial Dames of America. The cemetary and Meeting House overlook the Susquehanna River and is protected by a levy. Even so, our friends from the area, who took us by here, said the flood of 1972 caused a lot of bodies to be unearthed and they had to be rounded up, re-identified, and, of course, re-buried.

This is the Dunlap Creek Bridge off of Rt 40, in Brownsville, PA. Enjoy the photos.
Brownsville also has the distinction of the very first cast iron bridge in the United States which was designed and built in the Snowdon Foundry in Brownsville and has been in use since 1836. During these heydays with such wealth and affluence, it was believed that Pittsburgh could not amount to anything because of its close proximity to Brownsville.
This short bridge has been given more honors than bridges ten times its size. Only 80 feet long and 30 feet wide, it has been recognized as the first rib-fixed metal arch bridge erected in the United States. It has been in continuous operation for over 150 years.
Thanks for the hunt, that makes kill #162 for us.

This is the Missouri-Pacific Railroad Depot located in Ozark, Arkansas in Franklin Co. It is on the North bank of the Arkansas River. It was added to the National Register in 1992 (FR0025). It's period of significance was the years 1900-1924 and 1925-1949. It was well-built by MO-PAC and is currently being used as the Ozark Depot Museum.
The City of Ozark negotiated for many years to become the new owner with the promise of maintaining it and they have done well as it is still an interesting place to visit. It is located at the junction of River and 1st Street. I'm too young to remember it ever being used, but when your are there you get a FEEL about it's splendor back it's heyday.
This depot is the where I started the geocaching habit. It was a well-hidden micro that was not a good one to start out with b/c it kicked my butt! However, that was not enough to stop me continuing to play this wonderful sport and hobby. The day I took this picture, there were about a hundred or so vehicles packed in close to the RR tracks, there were very many different license tags on them. Don't know exactly why they were all there, but I suspect they were all there "Working On The Railroad, All the Live Long Day".
Thanks for the cache.

Unsure as to the specifics of its history, but it's an interesting bit of architecture. Photos are from the closest I could get without impeding "rush hour" traffic.

The monument marks the route through Palmer MA, that General Henry Knox hauled a train of cannon over wintry trails to help drive the British away from Boston.
In 1775, Gen. Washington assigned the 25-year-old self-taught gunner to command the Continental Army's artillery. Knox's first task: transport 59 cannon from Fort Ticonderoga, N.Y., to Dorchester Heights, Mass., nearly 300 miles.
It took 80 yoke of oxen dragging 42 sleds to move the cannon, which weighed nearly 60 tons. The three-month ordeal ended on Mar. 4, 1776, when 2,000 men and 400 oxen hauled the cannon up the heights. "The rebels have done more in one night than my whole army would have done in a month. It must've been the work of at least 12,000 men," said a British general. Intimidated, the British withdrew on Mar. 17. Boston was a free city, and Henry Knox was made a brigadier general.
Knox went on to participate in many major battles of the Revolutionary War, including the siege of Yorktown. Knox received his second star in 1781, and a year later, command of the fortress at West Point, N.Y.
Knox became a federal servant in 1785 -- Secretary of War to the Continental Congress -- then became a member of President Washington's first Cabinet and third in line for the presidency.

Our community has two buildings listed on the Historic Registry. This one is the Cobblestone School House and it was listed by our Superintendent of School's on May 12, 1996. The building is our community's first high school and was built with donated funds raised by dances and bake sales and one large grant in the amount of $40,000. Finished in 1912, it was a fully accredited school with three full time teachers, until the new more modern high school was completed here in 1990. POS 1912-1990. Jitterbug205 and Horseman
Formerly the site of Beams Shell Station in Cherryville NC it is now the C Greir Beam Truck Museum. Has alot of neat old trucks that were used to haul freight in.
St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Va. The home of one of the oldest churches in America that still stands. Construction started allllll the way back in 1632. It was one of only five places where the Court of the Colony was allowed to convene and conduct the business of the day in those colonial times. Those who maintain it are certain that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and other notables of the revolutionary period stopped by here. This old lady has stood proud since before America was America, since Isle of Wight County was Warrosquyoake County when collecting food wasn't about getting in a book, but surviving to the next spring.

We went to Buffalo NY for the weekend and were staying near the airport. Looked at the list of Historic Places and could not believe how close this was to the hotel. Glad we can share it as there may be some War of 1812 fans watching the site. We have spent quite a bit of time touring 1812 Battlefields on both sides of the Canada US border. The nice thing about this cache is - it is dedicated to both.
There was a hospital in Williamsville NY that treated casualties from both sides and the unfortunate ones are buried here side by side. Canada, US, and Union Jacks are flying. The actual cemetery is located in Cheektawoga NY.
Could not have been a more beautiful area on a sunny fall morning. Check out the colours.

This is an historic building on the site of the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, 30 Tinkling Spring Drive, in Fishersville, Virginia (Augusta County). The building was listed on the register in 1973, and its period of significance is 1850-1874. According to the main sign, the congregation was founded in 1740. The plaque on the building says that it is on the site of the original church, and a school met here beginning in 1880. This church is not far from our house and we have friends who are members there. As you might expect, both the church and the street names sometimes cause giggling in those who hear them for the first time!

Name: Levoy Theatre
Date: August 14, 1998
Dates of "Period of Significance": 1925-1949.
Address: 126 N. High Street, Millville, NJ
Lat/Long: N. 39° 26.468 W. 075° 03.373
The Levoy Theatre was the hometown cinema for Millville, New Jersey, long before I was born, but it continued for at least five to six years beyond the listed "Period of Significance." In 1954, when I was ten years old, I saw the movie The High and the Mighty starring John Wayne in that theatre.
As for the restoration project currently in progress . . . the group has been functioning for many years without much "apparent" being accomplished. The sad death (while still in his 20s) of the man who spearheaded the group has nearly destroyed their momentum.

Team Nightowls01 Gypsy and Moles This is Natioal Road Mile Marker # 9 The National Road was one of the first attempts to open the West for Travel and Settlement. It goes frm Washinton to Illinois. You might say it was our first super highway, for covered wagons. Each year the states through which it passes hold a National Pike Day.Around Wheeling,West virginia ,whre we live it is a big event with covered wagons ,many horses, and local festivals. The National Road Mile Markers, some original, some replaced in 1993, mark the mile to travel to each major population center at that time.In the early 1800's just where you were was as important as it is now. Many smaal towns and villages thrived on the sale of goods and lodging to the passing pioneers.

Queen Emma's Summer Palace, Hanaiakamala, was built in 1848. It became the summer mountain valley retreat of King Kamehameha IV, Queen Emma and their son Prince Albert. After the tragic death of the prince in 1862 and the King in 1863, Queen Emma lived a life of mourning at this palace. The house is said to be haunted by the 4 year old prince.

This property is on the National Register of historic places located in Lucas, Kansas. The creator of this concrete made of limestone collection was Samuel Perry Dinsmoor, a retired schoolteacher, Civil War vetern, farmer and Populist politician. Gripped by a deep desire to create at age 64, he started builing the Garden of Eden as a residence in 1905. His house is made of limestone cut to look like logs. His sculputure garden surrounds it. He opened his home as a tourist attraction in 1908, even as his vision of bibical and modern man was being molded out of 113 tons (2,273 sacks) of concrete. He continued building up until his death in 1933. Dinsmoor had prepared for his death by building a 40-foot-high limestone mausoleum in one corner of his garden. When he died, he was embalmed and put on display. Even after 60 yrs. you can look through his glass-sided coffin and see the moldering creator of this heavenly splendor.

The downtown area of the City of Marshall (well, downtown and a bit more) was placed on the National Register of Historic places in 1991. Marshall has preserved and restored a great deal of it's architecture, spanning from the 1820's to today. Marshall has some beautiful larger houses, mansions belonging to past mayors and barons of the patent medicine industry. They also have restored smaller houses belonging to what would have been middle (ok, maybe upper middle) classed families. If you are interested in seeing some of these houses, you can attend the annual Home Tour, labor day weekend. Marshall also has the historic sotne barn, which is now City hall, the fountian (in the summer, lights make the water turn colors. We used to take jars down with us to catch the colored water and were disappointed when it wasn't colored any more. kids...) I've also pictured a couple of downtown buildings. The second floor of one was a ballroom, and the other was an opera house. Rumors also exist that they were used as a speakeasy during prohibition, but I can neither confirm nor deny this.

So many great places to choose from. Initially I considered Tovrea Castle, a local landmark that I have loved for decades. Then there is Pueblo Grande, which is of significance to one part of my life. And a building in Tucson designed by a relative of mine. In the end, it came down to convenience. I was at Grady Gammage first and took the required photo. Thanks for the cache.
Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium was built in 1964. It is one of the last buildings designed by Frank Llowd Wright. Wright drew up plans for an opera house in Baghdad in 1957, but the assassination of the Iraqi king a year later halted the project. The design was revived the design for Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium. The circular auditorium, whose round roof is supported by 50 concrete columns, seats about 3,000 people. Its warm, rust colors were meant to blend in with the soil and Arizona sunsets.
I attempted to pull the information off the National Register website, however there seems to be a glitch in it today and it will not allow me to pull up anything for Grady Gammage (or anything else for that matter). All I get is a blank page. I do know it was placed on there 9/1//85.

John A. Parker Storehouse and N.A. Nix Grocery
Dahlonega Commercial Historic District
Dahlonega, Lumpkin County, Georgia
Periods of Signifigance: 1850-1874
Added April 7, 1983
I was in Dahlonega, Georgia, this weekend for Gold Rush Days. This is the old John A. Parker Storehouse, later the N.A. Nix Grocery, just one building in the historic district. It's now a restaurant called the Crimson Moon.
According to the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce web site, it's the oldest surviving commercial building on the Square. It was owned by John A. Parker from 1858 to 1888 and is less refined than its newer, circa-1880 neighbors. Thanks to Nelson A. Nix, who operated a grocery in it from 1936 to 1980, it's still around to remind us of Dahlonega's origins as a remote, isolated mining town!

Found this historic spot along I-70 in New Mexico and between White Sands Missile Range and Holloman Air Force Base.
The historic marker tells the story of a Civil War Veteran and New Mexico legislator that was mysteriously slain near this spot. His body was never discovered back in the late 1800s.
Thanks for the Locationless Reverse Cache!

This home is locally known as "The Castle" for fairly obvious reasons. It was built by Vetter & Lowinski in the Second Empire style. This house is in a rich historic area with the Grand Opera House/Fox Theater and the Public Square also being listed just down the street. Today it serves a lesser purpose, having been divided into apartments and rooms for rent.

This is the locks on the Willamette River in Oregon City, Oregon, USA. The locks were hand dug and opened January 1, 1873. This was an incredible feat! For about 75 years, the locks were opened by hand crank. In 1973 the Spruce Goose went through the locks on the way to McMinnville, Oregon. The large anchor (pictured) commemorates the locks being put on the historic register. Hard to see but my GPS is in the picture.

#111. This is a 19th century burial ground that is listed as part of the Lamington Historic Area on Cowperthwaith Rd., Lamington, Somerset County, NJ.
It is called The Lamington Black Cemetery. It was added to the National Historic Register in 1984, District #84002802. The register says the period of significance is from 1900-1750AD.
The site has 97 identified graves of former slaves and free blacks who were members of the Lamington Presbyterian Church. Previous to being recognized by the Historic Register, it had fallen into neglect. It is still very rustic with many trees growing on the grounds. Not very well laid out.
Being a child of the 21st century, I find it hard to believe that these people lived as free men but were segregated at death. They had some rights but were evidently not considered as equals. This is a good reminder of the segregation that existed in the Northern States even as we fought the Civil War to end slavery but not Civil Rights.

Cassin Young was a Naval Commander and Medal of Honor recipient who rescued scores of sailors from the waters after the attack on Pearl Harbor, HI. The USS Cassin Young bears his name as a destroyer built in the 1940's for service in WWII and also Korea. While touring the ship, one of the Rangers made the comment that the USS Constitution, the oldest commissioned warship in the world at 207 years young, and docked a few hundred feet away displaces 1500 MORE tons than the destroyer.

There is a fabulous Historic District in San Juan Capistrano, CA not too far from Mission San Juan (other side of the railroad tracks). The Los Rios Historic District (added 1983 - District - #83001216) is an example of neighborhood life at the turn of the century and before, and is continuing as the oldest neighborhood in California. It was not that long ago that the streets were dirt. The large trees at the lot corners were used to denote property boundaries, and many go as far back as the beginning of European settlement in the area. There are about 40 homes, which vary in age from 50 to 204 years old. Most of the homes are private dwellings and may be viewed only from the street-please respect residents' privacy. The Montanez Adobe, the O'Neill Museum, the Ramos House Cafe, the Lobo House, the Rodman House, and the Lupe Combs House are businesses and are open to the public during business hours. The Olivares House is Millie Jones' china painting studio. Think of what life must have been like during the long period when the original mission, its' outbuildings and the Great Stone Church were being built. It was a time when the Spanish and the Acjachemen Indians were beginning to merge their cultures. The Montanez, the Rios, and the Silvas adobes are all that remain on Los Rios Street of the about 40 adobes that were here at that time. This neighborhood was then the home of the mission builders and workers on the mission ranch, for the economy was centered around the mission. A second significant wave of homes, was built by European immigrants to the area in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Rios Adobe - 31781 Los Rios St. (circa 1794)
Santiago Rios came from Spain in the 1780s to be a soldier in the mission garrison, and built the adobe in 1794. The Blessed Olive Tree, which is in the Rios Adobe front yard, was brought as a seedling from the Holy Land by FR. St. John O'Sullivan as a gift for Mrs. Damion Rios, "Nana Tula," for all of her good work for the mission church. The adobe has been occupied by the Rios family since 1794, which makes it the oldest continually occupied home in the western United States.
