A quick find today. Wasn't far away for work so made sense to snare this wee one.I'm sure I've been here before and looked but could not see the information.
JDScout and I are spending a week in the Nelson/Tasman area. We are on another campervan trip. We stayed in Nelson the last two nights. Today we biked from Tahunanui to Stoke, Monaco and back.
We just learned more about the orphanage because of another nearby multi. This one was easy with the solution placed on the cache page. Quite some time since the last find for this one. Near GZ we saw a few MTT candidates but no cache. Then I spotted the tin on the ground in the grass. Log paper in bad shape but still writeable. Placed back in nearest MTT, happy hunting!
Thanks Marchwood for bringing me to this spot. Over the years, I will have passed-by this sculpture hundreds of times but never knew the story & inspiration behind it. When I did a bit of googling on the history of Stokes Orphanage, it made for sad & sobering reading. I like to think that these orphanage boys enjoyed playing in the creek with their friends, anything to escape the cruelty and excessive work. I managed to find the crucial #’s online as they’re long gone from the artwork itself. Easy crunching of the #’s, co-ords in hand & my daughter & I made a mission of this after school. Her catch-phrase “Mum does the puzzle & I do the finding!” Too true TFTC.
I tried several times to 'solve' but didn't manage to see any numbers. Then one day I came across online information about the artwork that included numbers. Worked out final, passed by many times and finally stopped now after getting some milk nearby.
While approaching it felt like I had found this already, or was there another one really near? Not sure but checked the log and I hadn't signed before, so maybe my memory is just playing up.

There was a cold icey breeze on Saxton feild today perfect for hunting for geocaches tftf
I worked out where to go for this one a few weeks ago. Today we happened to be passing so stopped off to make a quick grab. On the way to the cache we actually got a better look at the artwork TFTC
I'm sure I saw this one on the map and thought, "Oh no. Not another multi." Upon closer examination (i.e., reading of the cx page), I realized this was really a trad hiding in multi clothing.
I was in the area for another cx, so I had just a short detour to get this one. After looking at several places, I finally got to the right one. TFTC.

I had sorted out the numbers quite a while ago ; today was a good time to stop and find the cache.
Quick find, accurate co-ords. Thanks for this Multi, Marchwood.

Thanks Marchwood for resurrecting this one after a recent DNF from me. Quickly found today.
The cache appears to have gone with recent tree felling.
Will replace in about 4 weeks when I'm back in the South Island.

Did this the easy way. Found quickly early this morning. The lid is pretty stuffed though. Cheers and TFTC
Into Richmond this morning for 3 jobs - this being one of them. Used to work not far from here and are familiar with this artwork. Read the description, dialed in the coords and soon had cache in hand. Not many muggles about today.
Lid had fallen off, but was found and placed back on container. Otherwise all good here.

Found with Tregearp whilst out on a Saturday afternoon stroll. This one was a quick find and relatively muggle free unlike another nearby one we needed to abandon.
All in good order, thanks for the cache Marchwood.
All in good order, thanks for the cache Marchwood.
SJT_NZ and I had solved this sometime ago but at GZ initially had problems with muggles and then couldn't locate the cache. Having confirmed cords with a previous finder we decided to take a bit of a wander this afternoon. Success, thanks for the cache all in good order just didn't fossick enough on the previous attempt.
Sorted the co-ords for this cache while in area 2 days ago. Info is visible if in right spots but not terribly clear. Saved till today as needed a cache today to up the Finds for the day. Great little bit of artwork and clever multi. Odd muggles near GZ. TFTC
I spent about 15 minutes looking for this geocache. I was looking away either side of the given co-ordinates because there was nothing obvious at gz. There is a lot of sawdust & stumps around so I hope the cache hasn't been removed.
Once in correct spot to find numbers, some quick maths and off to find with ZAK. NZ for a grubby find
A long search proved fruitless. Once we worked out what MTT meant it narrowed our options but two cachelettes were over it.
Maintenance check today. All good. In its right place. I came armed with a replacement container but the lid isn't rusty and working well.
Replace lid down and it will last another four years.
Replace lid down and it will last another four years.
Solved coordinates and they checked out with those given. But unable to find cache on this day, thought we had a, fairly good look too, even knowing the container type!
Taybeedragon and I are back in Nelson. Again. I need to get a multi today, and another tomorrow, to complete the requirements for a ten day multi-cache streak challenge. There are not enough multis left for me in Blenheim.
We've found three caches this morning but still haven't tackled a multi! Better get that done before I forget it completely.
This is a great sculpture. The numbers where easy to read, so we solved the cache properly, rather than using the coords listed in the description. Note that the cache container is very rusty - its lid will fail soon.
Multi-cache streak day nine completed. One more to go. Today is Saturday, so getting that one more should be easy!

The Seagnoid needs a couple of multis this weekend. So we are off for another adventure to Tasman, with The Seagnoid and Zara, early Saturday morning.
This sculpture is great. Found the numbers and solved the puzzle so off to find the cache. Snagged and tagged. Cheers

Been past here plenty but never stopped for a stroll. A sunny chilly morning has given me the chance today. Was able to get around and see the numbers fine. Thanks for bringing me here and tftc!
Had a bit of spare time between meetings so thought I would fill in my time by finding this cache. Even though I have driven past probably 100s of times, I have never stopped to really look at this sculpture. One of the good things about geocaching is that I slow down and appreciate our environment. The cache was in the first place I checked so that is always a great thing. Thanks Marchwood for the cache
In the area today and in need of a little walk. Able to admire the statue from all angles then worked out the final . The numbers are very easily seen now (they must have removed the overgrowth) so you could remove the extra clue added in the description now if you wished. Not been found for nearly a year but log in great condition and nice and dry. Thanks for the multi and thanks for the cache.
A trip over the hill was the plan for today, to hell with the weather there's some bedroom furniture needs sourcing and there's caches to be found too. Just the 3 of us heading over, will sure be different from now on without my black hairy shadow, Tally the dog. I'd recently bought a new Geocaching coat from Kathmandu (the shop, not the place) and was looking forward to testing it out against the promised wet stuff. I also bought some specific shorts but these were M I A after our recent house move so their test will have to wait. I ended up getting a few Multi caches today, which was a nice change of direction and the rain sure did come down. Where there was once dry ground, there were rivers and streams so had to be on my toes (to stay dry)
Well, Nelson can sure turn on the waterworks when it needs to. At G Z I accidentally drove along the cycle path then tried to turn and got bogged twice before reversing out onto the road and parking up. Along the path to admire the artwork and head to the cache final. Found easily enough and feared for dryness but no worries, a Marchwood enhanced log book bag and all nice and dry. Replaced as found and off to the next

We had breakfast in the park and thought of doing this multi as a bit of a start in Nelson. But nope.... no numbers for me.. And without the numbers there is no final
maybe next time

Found on a day spent travelling from Nelson to Harihari, thanks to everyone who hide caches for us to find.
It is always a busy few days when we are in town for my football tournament so no chance to find this cache until the day we were leaving town. Mum loved the sculpture so much she made sure we all went and found it (and the numbers) as well as the final.
Thanks for the hide.

Mum said I had to walk across the field if I wanted to claim a find on this cache. So I did and got given a piggy back ride back to the car so we could hit the road for our trip to Harihari.
Thanks for the hide.
Thanks for the hide.
This was our third year attending the South Island 10th and 11th grade football tournament. Possibly our last for a while (unless son gets regraded next year).
Year one I stood and stared, brain rushing from one thing to another, but nothing. No numbers no nothing. I hated this cache.
Year two I found the numbers, I felt so dump having not seen them the year before. No chance to grab the final, too many people around.
Year three, this year, I was determined not to leave till the job was done. The numbers are getting harder to see but still there. Made sure the boys saw them so they could sign the logbook too. Was only half happy with the check sum but it didn't matter in the end when son reached out and showed me the cache.
Yes we have a find. Log signed, returned to it's hide and back to the car. It takes a long time to get to Harihari you know and there are more caches to find.
Thanks for the challenge.

I have been to look for this multi a number of times with no luck .I was out walking today doing the odd cache,on my way home I loaded my GPS with the corrodinates but it kept taking me back to the start so I put it way and started searching hay presto found it . tft multi marchwood
Multiple attempts at the maths but persistance paid off - we've really enjoyed trying to crack this one. Co-ords were spot on so made a quick find. Thanks for brain-teaser!
Quite an interesting sculpture, and quite a contrast between the cache photo and the surrounding area now. Maths was all good and a quick find at the final GZ.

Nice work Marchwood! We mucked up the maths the first time around and ended up searching a bus shelter! Got there in the end. TFTC.
First multi of the Garin College Geocache Grad Challenge 2014. Once we got the 10 digits to add up to 44 (surprisingly difficult for two science teachers) it was an easy find. Thanks for the art appreciation, work and cache!
#8549. I needed a couple of finds for a four a day challenge I am working in. Troodles had found this one while streaking, and passed on the coords, so I went straight to GZ and made a quick find. TFTC.

This was one of the most epic weeks ever, and definitely my most epic caching week ever.
Me and mum headed up on a holiday north to Nelson and very wider surrounds. In total during the trip, we found almost 500 caches! (470 odd I think, but final results are yet to be in! ) We covered about 3000 odd km I think too. Crazy! And had our absolute best caching day ever too at 160 found. Spend 9 days travelling, caching, and having the best time ever!!
So sorry about not so epic logs, as otherwise this would probably take me the rest of my life to log, especially with two big events to organise coming up! Eeek!!
Almost every single log we signed as 'Team Polak' to avoid needing to write out both usernames taking up space on logsheet - as well as precious caching time!! Haha.

For the sake of sanity we set off with sonia26642 for a crazy geocaching trip, aiming to cache until we drop. The main destination was Nelson and the ‘surrounding’ area, but then we ended up covering a few miles in three northernmost regions, plus a few in Canterbury. We were signing/stamping the log as 'Team Polak' or ‘TP’ for the two of us on this trip to save logbook space. We found a lot of different caches, city ones, road side, park side, up a hill and on an island, and we enjoyed every single one of them. It was good to be a professional thingfinder for a few days!
We had great fun and are grateful to all CO’s who placed caches for us to find, and help restore our sanity before returning to our other non-geocaching lives!!
Come and join us the next New Zealand geocaching MEGA event!! Register your interest now at www.nzmega2015.com to receive newsletter updates and be the first to know. It will be a great event, come and be a part of it!!

The numbers were very obvious this visit. In Nelson for football again. No chance to hunt for the final. Might or might not be able to before we leave town. If not will just have to hope we are back next year.
The dark clouds amassing in the south west plus the rain radar suggested that a bike ride to get my cache of the day would be unwise, so decided to combine trip to Bunnings with this cache instead.
Had used the mathematical method to find the final co-ords from the comfort of the study a few month ago, so all I needed to do was go straight to the final, and cache was a quick find between muggles. Looks like the CO is rather fond of duct tape .
The artwork is quite cool, and deserving of a cache placement. Could be subtitled "high and dry", I suppose. Only when I got closer did I see the heron (I thought it was a duck ) in the boat.
Thanks for day #143 of my streak (think I dated my log 20/9 instead of 19/9). TFTC.

I'd had this one solved quite early on in our Geocaching career, but despite a couple of attempts had not managed to find it. That was put to rights today as a had another search and was pleased to see my cache sense had improved enough for me to quickly grab this cache before a dog walking muggle ambled along.

Pass this site very regularly on geopedals but have only just faced those equations, which proved far more straight forward than I had first thought. Gps showed gz spot on. Thanks for that. http://www.geocaching.com/images/icons/icon_smile_cool.gif
This was a lot of fun! Its good to take time to appreciate the art in our area. Thanks.
12808... Great sculpture... stared and stared until we finally found the elusive numbers. Nicely set up multi, many thanks.
My first Multi - and very nice too. Memories of my Maths classes at High school came flowing back. Good fun! TFTC
Today I finally found and signed the cache [:X] having collected the data on an afternoon that turned to rain and sent me scurrying home. Love this sculpture!
very cool...some initial bafflement...then we were on to it. worker made the find. nice one thanks Marchwood
Seen the boys lots of times but never noticed the bird its amazing what pops up when you have a closer look at things good to see this sort of meaning artwork
Finally I can tick this one off after the false start when it was first published. Not long after that i went back to find the 2 numbers and solved puzzle on the back of a credit card receipt, however there was a bunch of skateboarding muggles hanging around gz so was unable to look for it. The receipt is long since gone so resolved today then rushed out for a quick find TFTC
I quite like it actually better than a bit of rusty metal in a pond and I particularly appreciate it being completed by a Nelson artist instead of someone from elsewhere in the world and being able to see it when I drive past too. Its amazing the amount of mud under waypoint 1. Thanks for the replacement. TFTC #4774
Anzac day bike ride Calculated it correctly on my first try too! Muddy environs; I added my name on a piece of paper as log is still wet following floods.
Replaced log and bag with a nice new dry one. Survived the flood surprisingly well.
Took me a wee while to work this one out, and initially got my numbers wrong and it pointed me out to sea! Anyway, in the area again today and after the recent flood fully expected to not find it....BUT....yes it had survived, although obviously been under water. Thought the CO would like to know it's still there, but could do with a new log book and a dry out. Thanks Marchwood, enjoyed this challenge.
A cool sculpture eh!!! I bet life in the orphanage had its moments!!! There had been a lot of water down this way this morning. Just a pity it had to stop so soon. Thanks for placing the cache.
This piece of art has some special significance to Mr Three D'S as his grandfather was brought up in the Orphanage after which this stream is named. We were on to this interesting multi quick-smart as this site is on our regular morning walking route. TFTC
Took me three attempts to get my sums right but got there in the end. The hint makes absolute sense now. TFTC!!
A simple multi when in the right spot! Out for a walk today with a dog from the SPCA, TFTC!
Found it with integersmirk. I nice evening to take a walk around the area, brought back memories of my summer football team playing here once a week over the past 5 years. TFTC
I suspect we would have suffered the same fate as the initial hunters without the clarification on where the numbers might be - with this information it was very straightforward and we enjoyed our first find of the evening. I have often evilly thought about putting a cache IN this feature, but clearly that would be inappropriate TFTC
After being defeated last night I decided to take the SoBad approach today. Another nice evening walk with Ellie plus family and an easy find was the reward. Checked out gz and the art again and did eventually see the elusive numbers too. Nice piece of art and well worthy of a second visit. Thanks Marchwood for placing this cache.

Nice one! Well its Nelson's 'Go to work by bike' day today so as I work from home, I thought I'd 'go to cache by bike' instead. Took a slightly different approach this morning and found that if I looked far enough and hard enough, the required information was in plain sight. A tricky twist but clever none-the-less and one which could have been worked out from the listing itself if read carefully enough [B)]. So with the numbers collected and maths performed it was a short walk to GZ where I found that Mrs SoBad had already retrieved the cache and had it ready for me to sign [:o)]. TFTC, Biggles.
It was an email at 10pm that made us aware that this multi had proved to be challenging with the fieldwork. Mrs Sobad remembered another multi that was more easily solved as a puzzle so took that approach - well Sobad was watching cricket so what else do you do.
Read the cache page, looked at the formulae and saw that she knew a lot about AB and a bit about CD. And a check sum was also going to be useful. Found the right approach and some useful numbers emerged. They fitted the sum - and the coordinates looked good on GE.
With no need for a FDF, Mrs S just turned right instead of left on her way to work this morning and parked within 20m of GZ. Sorry, but no need to visit the waypoint so she didn't, but she has seen the art work featured often before.
She enjoyed this a lot... well it was a puzzle so she would, especially as it was not intended as a puzzle.
At GZ she is not sure if she was CITOing or taking a prize that was intended for the FTF.
Thanks - and a favourite point for the puzzle!!!!

No problem now we know that WP1 is not where you're supposed to get the numbers. TFTC
It makes a difference when you know the posted co-ordinates are not near enough to WP1 to get the required info. No problem after that. TFTC.
Armed with the new knowledge, returned tonight and found the offending digits easily enough. That's about when it all turned to custard. Made a complete hash of the arithmetic. Ended up at the wrong place. Then my jandal broke. Retired home for reissue of appropriate geofootware and brains. Returned withdaughter and dog, and was on the final hunting bit when Eder Ents arrived again. Nice to finally tick it off. Thanks.
There is none so blind as those that will not see.
Read the logs and went groan! Took the puzzle approach and had an answer in a couple of minutes. Headed to GZ to find Topgear, Topdaughter & Topdog on the hunt. In a minute the log was signed and we were heading our separate ways again.

Walked down to the published co-ordinates with Ellie after work. Looked around but didn't see any two digit numbers anywhere. Walked home scratching my head. I'll be back.
Wahoo FTF at 6:25am while out for my early morning ride with my muggle mate who was totally bemused by my antics but still gave a hand. Some people just don't get it! Loved the Multi and now knowing what this statue is all about is a bonus. TFTC
Hmm a bit stumped at WP1. Couldn't find anything relevant at published coordinates.
Searched high and low for 2 2 digit numbers with no luck. Found some "other" numbers that we thought might have worked but tried numerous ways but couldnt get them to add up correctly
OK folks. This cache is about art appreciation so Ms M says start appreciating it up close and personal.
Two visits here today, first one was too busy and the second one was a DNF. We couldn't find anything which resembled one 2 digit number, let alone 2 of them but we did get to meet Eder-Ents who turned up as we were about to give up. Lets hope he has better luck than us, will watch this space with interest.
Two visits here. First time muggled out and second time all we found was EderEnts waiting in the wings as we were just about to give up.
Well, Eder Ents was still there when I arrived. And when I left too. Couldn't find any 2 digit numbers:(
The only good things about this evening was that I met Holymu & Hazedarus and to catch up with Topgear.
At one point I had numbers that calculated to a point 1.14km away in someones driveway.
Topgear & I are convinced the numbers are on leg rings on two for the many ducks!
