I was out on a hike around Huia today and passed close to this cache while going along Fletcher's Track. I looked for a path of least resistance through the bush to GZ and found a fairly easy way in. At GZ it did take me a little while to find the cache though! TFTC!
After hearing of that American who strayed off a trail for a comfort break and then was found three years later just a few yards from the track, I was a bit hesitant to search for this one on my own. It was all straightforward - though I was relieved to rejoin the Fletcher trail. Tall grasses obscured the views. Log dry. TFTC.
It was the day before Christmas and all through the house..................Stuff that. We had talked with Gorby and Rustynz about doing this a couple of times but circumstances or weather dictated that we did not attempt this one at the same time as B.A.S.E. However having the day off meant that we could sneak this one in before Xmas. A very early start and it was very cool and threatening rain. We initially passed what appeared to be the best waypoint to go off track to this and marked it as we passed while heading to B.A.S.E. On our return we found our WP and made a beeline straight to GZ. The weather by now was starting to look more grim and so the peek of the view was not what it could have been. Fun to get too but not so bad that we were too challenged. Thanks Gorby and RustyNZ for joining us on this one.
OK we walked past this one to get to B.A.S.E. http://coord.info/GC4DFMZ so that one could be my 2000th find! This one was the bonus, which required as much planning as the other. We had studied terrrain maps, and created a suggested waypoint from the Fletcher Track, that would take us to the cache.
With Gorby and jag50 we made our way to GZ, and with the help of the hint, I soon found the cache. Thankfully its a good size, and the contents where well protected and dry. Sadly no peak-a-view could be seen, a combination of my height, the trees have grown, and the rain that now fell to the ground stopped me seeing any view!
Thanks to the CO and to my caching companions, who found a way on Christmas eve, time to meet and find some caches

Too busy to be worried about xmas tomorrow! I'm off tomorrow to Wellington to cache like mad and today I had made arrangements with 3 other keen as trampers/cachers/nutters: [blue]Rustynz and Jag50[/blue] to come and do [orange]B.A.S.E. and Peak-a-View 408.1.[/orange] We succeeded on B.A.S.E. with Rusty getting her 2000th cache find upon that one. Congratulations there again Sharon. So now to this cache!
We started from Mnt Donald McLean carpark at 7am, to me the weather was just perfect, very cloudy and it had been raining and it threatened to do so again anytime. We headed across McLean Trk, turned right into Fletchers then passed this cache to B.A.S.E. (so Sharon could get her 2000th there) and came back here. After doing the previous one this one was a doodle! The climb was about 60m or so from where we left the main trk, it only took a short time to ascend to the (view! Wot view?) and a short time for rusty to spot the cache.
It's always nice to see a reasonable size cache after a good long walk. One shouldn't have to muck around on a long search. We signed ourselves in and were quite pleased with ourselves too I might add! We have done 2 excellent caches off track a T4.5 and now a T4. Co-ords spot on FMZ (confirmed with my Oregon 650t)!
Then we headed back down and onto the main trk and headed over to evilno9's 'Forking Good Fun' as if we hadn't had enough forking good fun...
So for those interested, we took 4hrs15 mins to come from McLean carpark to here, via McLean trk and Fletchers trk, do also 'B.A.S.E.' cache then 'Forking good fun' cache then back to the carpark.
Thanks Rusty and Jag for an excellent morning of exercise. Thanks [blue]FMZ[/blue] for placing this cache too.

Out with lokky1 for a bush walk! We finally dragged ourselves to the top an had a quick find! Peaked a little view but no time to hang around! Tftc
Wow i think 10centnz and mys3lf are done now lol tftc now roll all the way down hill Lokky 1 23 October 2015 13:35
Quick bash up to GZ. Found the container in good conditions after stumbling around the area for a while. TFTC
Reasonably easy to navigate through the open bush to the cache. Just kept heading uphill! Cache is in good condition, dry and snuggled up to the tree. TFTC.
Quick side trip off the track, found this easily. Nice spot, and the peeks of the view I could see were enough...after reading the logs, didn't want to venture any closer. A bit of fun getting tangled in bush going back to the track, but all good. Thanks.
Found with a group of Journeymen from All Saints' Howick whilst on a weekend away at Huia. This would be one of furthest away from the track caches that I have yet found but the co-ordinates were spot on which made the search much easier. Took Schnuffi 2 and may drop him (her) in another country. Thanks for the cache funkymunkyzone and for a placement just a little bit different.
Found with Greenblat - One of my first walks in the Waitakeres - Very much enjoyed it - Thanks.
Found together with Nutcase99 working off the Christmas excesses. Was warm and humid with light drizzle when we were approaching the top. Found a good easy place to branch off and soon at the cache. Just a small peek of the view from the top. Dropped off Schneuffi TB. T4TC
Took the day off work, and such a nice day too. Very warm - don't need this polypro! A very tiny peek of the view it is too . T4TC - M@
On a hike today with my daughter to pick up some of these recent caches in the Waitaks. It was a brilliant, high-viz day but the trail up was a bit of a mud fest. We loved the hint--as if there weren't a million to choose from--had a good laugh, but once there, easy peasy! Yep, accurately named peak a view. Managed to get closer to the nondescript edge for a better view, but the next step would have provided one a bit too open. Still, I like the fact that we were able to notch up another numbered peak--down to the tenth of a metre!
Good fun and well worth the hike. Cheers for the cache.

ROS was with FMZ on a FTF trek in the Waitakere's when this cache was placed. I suspect that if you could get close enough to the edge the views would be fantastic but decided that GZ was close enough to get a peek. Great spot for a cache.

Always good to see new caches published out this way, as its another great excuse to come back out here. Even on a wet, grey, misty day like today, it made for a great day. Came up to the spot on the path we needed to scramble up, and after a quick detour arrived at GZ with no problems. No view today other than thick cloud, so making sure we didn't get too close to the edge, we signed the log and headed back down to the path. TFTC
Out here with lemski and ak_hazard and son for a bit of a tramp in the waitaks.
Enjoyable walk (relatively speaking) from Karamatura to GZ and we managed to pick a reasonably sensible spot to come off trail and zone in for the last stretch to the cache.
Nice quick find with perfect coordinates, though no view to speak of as we were encased in grey. Cool spot - TFTC

We have been keeping an eye on this cache since it was published, and since it remained unfound yesterday when we returned home after a mid-week weekend, we decided to try for the FTF.
So this morning one of us headed out to work, while the other made the drive to Mt Donald McLean and began the walk from there. The track was a bit damper than when we were here at the end of March (remember the drought), but is still good walking. Followed the Fletcher track to about 65m from the cache, then headed up the last slope towards the Peak. The cache co-ords seem pretty good and the GPS was saying 3m when I turned and saw the cache about 1m from me - mind you 3m in the wrong direction here could be fatal!
Decided to be happy with just a Peek of the view between the trees.
Opened the logbook and my heart sank when I saw someone had already signed it - until I turned the page and read that Rosmar had been with FMZ at the cache placement.
Very happy to get the FTF on a cache like this that requires a bit of effort and planning. Many thanks.
