Now that was one scary adventure...awesome trek along the river and seeing where the merge..but then on the track to the cache there was a river rat as the locals call them camped out happy as smoking away and enjoying life...no vehicle access all gated off so walk or bike ...found the cache all good and yes the electric fence works ...so beware when trying to get past the camper...or you could just walk through his front yard....thanks Juicy fruits great cache

Well that was a creepy experience. Just before gz was a small tent with some crazy guy lying in it. I wasn't sure about going past him at all but Macwatt struck up a one sided convo with him and I snuck past. Then I did the block the line of sight trick while Macwatt retrieved the cache to sign. The locals call these guys "river rats". We met several on the way to gz - malnourished zombies. We managed to ride our bikes almost to gz. Thanks for bringing us here Juicy Fruits.

Yay. Got it.

Spend most of the day at Milnthorpe Park. Now heading back to Takaka and Pupu Springs.
All the shops closed for a well earned ice cream so its dinner instead at the local park over a camp stove. Still too early of Pupu night cache so its a walk down the river bed to snag this one. Lots of people in the carpark - freedom camping?? or party?? Some amazing trees along here. Cheers

25-Nov-17
Taybeedragon and I are wasting time in Takaka waiting for sundown, for another attempt at the night cache there. So we came here. Lots of what might be freedom campers at the orad end, or maybe it is just an evening party.
Lovely bit of ... of... bush? Trees? Once we got up the bank. Some of those trees are huge! Neat little camping spots.
I had that song by Bony M. stuck in my head: *By the rivers of Babylon / Where we sat down*. I bet that was the CO's intention all along. It's stuck in my head now too.

Thank you ! Lovely place

15-Jun-17
Replaced container with a temporary smaller one so I could bring original home to clean out & weatherproof, but it's still large enough to hold travelbugs, coins & trinkets for the kids .. Also added a fresh pencil, log & info sheet ..

Well, this was a first. I had to walk through someone's "lounge" to get to the cache. That is, one of the many homeless in this neck of the woods has set up camp within 10M of GZ. He even left his bible lying on the lounge floor. [:0] Sacrilege.

We tested the new to us vehicle by driving close to the cache - but it would be difficult to really turn this into a 'pick it up 1 step from the car' cache. The short stroll up to GZ was done by Mrs Sobad while Sobad turned the car around. A number of people parked in the area we might have parked if we had been in our other vehicle.
Thanks.

11-Dec-15
Biked till I was close, then did a bank scramble - on the way back I found the path! Lots of willow fluff flying around today.

23-Nov-15
A quick easy find, after eventually finding our way to the cache location. TFTC

26-Jun-15
I was so enjoying my wander alongside the river that I hadn't realised I was supposed to be wandering somewhere else until I got to the point where the only option was to swim. So clambered up the bank and there was a wee track - followed that to the cache and back to its starting point. It was lovely down there this afternoon. TFTC #6844

01-Jun-15
Drove as far as I could on the rocks, which made for a relatively quick find. I wouldn't have been able to attempt last time I was in the bay - hippies everywhere! No one around today. TFTC (2014)

And finally the much talked about trip for the Heaphy Track is underway. A few months ago the work sports committee decided this years adventure training trip would be New Zealand's longest of the Great walks; 78 kms from Collingwood end, emerging at Karamea somewhat older, more tired and wiser? We'll see.
But first. Get to Pohara for overnight accommodation at the top 10 and a St Patrick's night in Takaka for a feed and a few glasses of the cold, black wet stuff.....once a year can't be that bad surely.
In the town and grabbed the van keys as when 20 plus people walk into a small pub for a feed there can only be one outcome, a fairly long wait.....and a chance for a few 'impromptu' caches that made their own way onto the preloaded G P S.
Wanted to grab this one as I love rivers of all shapes and sizes. Not disappointed to stroll along the river bank then up and along to G Z for the prize

After weeks of training our preparation is about to pay dividends and the company I work for is sending 19 of us to spend four days and three nights on the Heaphy Track as part of a Team Building/Leadership/Get to know each other exercise. We start the track on the 18th of March, but as four of us are Geocachers it would be a shame not to make the most of this opportunity to indulge in our obsession. Over today and the next four days Capperz, GH6710, Kiwimykl and Raisinpig will jointly, individually or any other combination search for and log caches during our travels. In most cases the actual logs will be signed by one of us with our individual GC names, but we may just use our initials being C, G, K and R.

After sorting out our 'digs' for the night and grabbing a couple of Pohara caches, we came into Takaka for a meal and to celebrate St Patrick's Day. As capperz said below, we anticipated a long wait at the pub restaurant with the rest of our group hitting it en-masse, so we targeted a bunch of local caches while the restaurant caught up with the backlog. We drove to the end of a gravel track, but as we didn't have $WD left the van to proceed to GZ on foot in a persistent drizzle. We disturbed a couple of freedom campers who had hunkered down in their tents for the night and on our walk to GZ discovered the remnants of other freedom campers. They are going to be surprised when they get to their next destination and go to break out the tent and discover they left it in Takaka.

Eventually we got to GZ and after a short search the cache was discovered, log signed and returned as found.

Once again TFTC Juicy Fruits.

9.30am. Passed the Citizens Band Hall so knew we were taking the right access road. Followed the GPS along the riverbank to the junction hardly distracted by the couple skinny dipping in the river nearby. The co-ords were spot on and cache in good order. Left a signature path tag.

God a flat tyre here - something big and sharp went through the tyre (complete loss)
Luckily I had 2 spares on board so still ok. However we gave up on the cache before finding.

19-Jan-15
Very exciting -Mum and I found this one on a really hot day and had a swim while we were near the clear river.

18-Jan-15
Too many freedom campers! Unfortunately a tent (the third we had seen in this area) was right at what we thought to be GZ, so had to abandon the search.

TFTC Great little spot. Had time to kill while in the bay Smile

Jeez it was wet by the time I got here, the rain is a curse but a blessing, we need it for our water supplies, but you get wet as, even with a coat on, I just went for it. Some pretty soggy looking freedom campers here.TFTC

27-Oct-14
The third and final day of our Labour weekend trip to Golden Bay. There was quite a bit of rain overnight and some drizzle early morning, but mainly it was fine during the day so the weather didn't really put much of a dampener on our trip (apart from long wet grass and mud at some locations).
We opted to park further away and walk the remaining few hundred metres to the cache. Bank was slippery after rain, going up was OK but coming down more tricky and there were prickly shrubs nearby which are not good for hanging onto Surprised.
Nice big container, so left a TB. TFTC.

Checking some of my caches and was disappointed to find this one has a bit of moisture inside .. I'll replace with a better container as soon as I can, and in the meantime log is still good and dry ..

Swaps still in there but no TB, so I hope whoever picked it up logs it asap ..

Easy found. Merci

Out for an early walk from Takaka Camping and Cabins, now owned by KIWIH3.

Nice time of day for hunting in the 'CBD' before to many muggles are around.

Some freedom campers close by, and some in tents.

Lucky no flooding overnight !

Dropped in a water TB while here.

A little climbing on a beautiful day. TftC!

18-Jan-14
Found on a day's exploration around the region, letting the geocaches lead me to all the interesting places. This was the first cache of the day, a pleasant walk along the river. I overshot the path and ended up climbing the bank - there has been a lot of tree felling going on nearby so it was a bit of an obstacle course. Fortunately the cache site is unaffected and it was a quick find. Signed log and took the correct (and much easier) path back. Thanks for the cache.

12-Jan-14
River had too much water for me today to reach the target. Sorry.

21-Dec-13
There's a cache near my house called "Whine of the non geocaching spouse". This started off as a tribute cache run, but with the beautiful river, the family didn't mind as I tramped around and round. The huge downed Cottonwood made this interesting. Left two path tags and took nothing TFTC

The sounds of Boney M were ringing in my ears as I walked to gz enjoying the rivers. The approach to gz felt like the secret garden path had been found. Nice cache.
Thanks Juicy Fruits for the cache.

Park and grab! Yeah right! Some people must have long arms Big Grin. We really enjoyed the walk along beside the river. It was cool to observe where the Anatoki flow joins in. -- - And to see some massive poplars. TFTC Big Grin.

More memories: We used to swim in this river - just a bit further up-stream. That was when it was low tide at Pohara and we thought that it was too far to walk to the sea for a swim - some how, we never thought how illogical it was to bike into Takaka for a swim in the river and then bike back again to Pohara - probably the tide was in when we got home so we went for another swim. It was magic today walk along side the river and then to GZ. Along the walk we spotted what must be the biggest poplar tree in the world and a wire producing tree! TFTC

Nice little walk along the river. TFTC.

12-Oct-13
I didn't drive all the way to the cache as the river was running quite high and I didn't fancy getting stuck. A nice walk to the well stocked cache too. TFTC, Biggles.
