Will do a run and replace missing caches over summer.

No luck with short search — and there’s a lot of pongas!

08-May-22
Great way to spend Mother’s Day walking the track and finding caches

19-Apr-22
DNF after searching everywhere the clues indicated I could not find this Cache

28-Feb-22
Very much a feeling of Russian Dolls! Nice to have a reason to pause heading up the hill. Was aiming for a tree a metre or so up slope, tripped over the cache on the way. All good, tftc!

15-Feb-22
Neat cache. Sent hubby up to retrieve it thanks to a dodgy ankle and very wet terrain. Didn't take long to spot it from the track. Thanks for motivating us to keep climbing!

21-Nov-21
WOW! A log in a bag in a container in a container in a container in a container in a container. Guess what? The log was dry This one made me laugh. TFTC

13-Nov-21
Wohoo! Great stuff- especially after a disappointing dnf just before. This one is snug with all its layers like a Russian doll! Great idea

04-Jul-21
Track well graded so not too steep a climb. However good to have an excuse to stop occasionally! Good co-ords even with tree cover. TFTC

04-Jul-21
Decided to spent some time around Otaki and Waikanae picking up some caches. Finished the drive by ones and now time to stretch the legs on this loop walk. A good climb up and great views at the top. Managed 22 in total. Will need to return for the ones along the far ridge top.
Enjoyed the level of hides. Often took a few minutes but the hint was always specific enough to give me hope and continue looking.
This one was a a quick find. Opening it was like the Russian dolls. Log all fine. Thanks tmann for the challenge and the smileys.

01-May-21
I am enjoying the walk to find these caches. This is well protected indeed. All in good order. TFTC

04-Jan-21
Loved it - thanks for a good size cache

04-Jan-21
Hint and quite accurate coordinates makes this hide nice and pleasant!
4 or 5 containers....
Feeling a little bit like to play with Russian Doll

14-Nov-20
Nice spot

23-May-20
Happy for the breather here after a steep climb. Definitely well protected from the elements and we were rewarded with a good dry cache. Tftc

08-Jan-20
Russian doll style. Thanks for the cache!

Great cache it reminds me of pass-the-parcel!!

Eventually signed the perfectly dry log.

Sorry for the late log - it wasn't until logging caches today that we realised we hadn't already done this. We had done the 1st part (lower part) of this walk a few months ago and today was the day we decided we were going to do the climb. The container and log were definitely protected from the elements and we had to stop twice whilst two lots of muggles walked past. Was wondering whether we would get it signed before a third lot came Smile TFTC.

13-Apr-19
Find #3086. Having completed a return hike of Brights Ridge in Paraparaumu, I had time to come to Hemi Matenga, complete the ridge loop and find the last few caches placed since I last did this.
Russian dolls! That cache has no reason to ever get wet. Made me laugh so earns a favourite point. SL TFTC

11-Feb-19
Best protected cache I ever saw!
Thanks

30-Nov-18
Found very quickly. Nicely water tight haha. Good hints

11-Aug-18
Certainly well protected but we can't really complain as we own a cache that is even more well protected. As expected the log was very dry Wink

12-May-18
great find and very well protected

27-Apr-18
Keen to find this quickly as it was getting dark. Done without to much difficulty

06-Apr-18
a walker passed me as I was off the track searching in the wrong place - I didn't read the description properly! Located quickly after that, then heard voices coming up the hill, sat down and had a rest and a drink of water, cache was out of sight behind my bag, babushka!

17-Feb-18
Quick and easy find. Found with TwigNZ. Signed the log as "T & T" Thanks for the cache

17-Feb-18
I had been eyeing a few trails to do on the weekends I have my son and decided to go hard out today to see how many caches we could do in and around the Hemi Matenga Reserve an afternoon. We were lucky enough to be blessed with reasonable weather, when the forecast had been for showers, so that definitely helped us to get a great result.
I apologise in advance for the generic log, but there was no way I would have been able to write up each Cache as I went along, so am logging them now in bulk (sort of)

After all that climbing to reach the ridge, we were really enjoying the slow descent back towards civilisation. The rain was beginning to threaten by this stage of the afternoon, but we were really enjoying ourselves so wasn't really paying too much attention to it.

This was a quick and easy find, thanks to the description, and I was amazed at just how protected the log was. I don't think I have ever come across a cache where the log has 6 layers of protection! Micro, yeah right!

Signed the log as "T & T" on behalf of myself and my son (Thatweirdguy04), and we were on our way to the last ones for the day

Thanks for the cache.

27-Jan-18
Met others coming down on the corner, carried on for another 100 m before realising I needed to go back. A little searching required then it was like found it. Then no. Then yes then no. I like how the log was hidden. TFTC. TNLNSL

I am heading home after three weeks with the relatives, a pretty awesome christmas break. I have a whole day to get to the ferry from Palmerston North, so thought I would stop off and grab a Waikanae letterbox cache, and ended up walking the whole Hemi Matenga.
Wow. Talk about weather protection paranoia! Found a TB in this cache that was actually registered in the next cache downhill (the bolt cache). Oops!Grabbed it to take south, but firstly logged a vist for it here, to correct its kilometres.

10-Dec-17
2nd one of the day... I thought my GPS was a long way out, then the zig-zag started and I got steadily closer!

23-Jun-17
I walked past it on the way up and found it on the way down. I suppose that's like having a bob each way. No worries here at all. TFTC

Excellent protection from the elements lol !!

14-May-17
Lovely day to go for a walk and a get a few caches. Straight forward find. TFTC

23-Apr-17
Lots of pongas around which meant the search took a little longer than it should have. But the distance was right on. TFTC.

05-Mar-17
ha I always enjoy a cache like this, we had some muggles come down the hill as we were in the bush but the guy just wanted to know if the dogs were friendly.
at this point Dad got a phone call from his sister who have joined geocaching and have been struggling with a hide up north, they did indeed finally get it and are looking forward to the next find, put this one back and off we go, thanks for the placement.

25-Feb-17
#2961 logsheet and cache in great condition.

Not sure why this cache is named as it is - it is definitely on the way down - I can almost smell the salt from here.....

05-Feb-17
OMG the layers! Lots of muggles which made things tricky. And they're still coming as I write this. GPS was unhelpful again but the hint was good. TFTC.

04-Feb-17
Had just put this one back, turned around, slipped on my bottom and realised a muggle was watching me Sad

I'm sure he thought I was doing a "bushy"

OK, I had to laugh at this one. Played into my frustration perfectly. Loved it. TFTC!

No problems here. Well, at least not until after I located the container. Unsurprisingly, the logsheet is in immaculate condition.

Found but with no pen to note find. Babushka!

21-Aug-16
Found on tramping club Sunday trip with 9 others to help us. We made it a "round trip" starting at the Huia Street entrance, walking through the leafy streets to Tui Street, through the Kohekohe Walk, over the Te Au Route, continuing north as far as the "Homer Tree" before returning and dropping down to the cars. An easy walk on a good track, the weather was perfect and the views were stupendous. TFTC

01-Jul-16
Wandering Dragons, John the Strong and I decided to take a day out to go grab these caches.. We entered from the Huia Street entrance and glad we did. Very steep going up, but once we finished panting at the top the rest was much easier. All caches easily found and the GeoHounds loved the walk. Pity there were only two real spots for views, but the forest walk in itself was fantastic if not a bit muddy in some spots. Trailed off on the link path at the top, but because the wife had instructed me to be home by 5pm, we didn;t have time to finish all the ones along the third leg. Thanks for the caches, trail and walk. Feeling pretty good after the walk, and a tad bit stiff from the exercise.

01-Jul-16
The Wandering Dragons, Crystal Fairy and myself headed off today for a trek around Hemi Matenga Reserve. But we were on our way down. Thanks for the cache.

Cache # 3,249 - Went for a nice long walk with Crystal Fairy and John the Strong and two of our dogs today, on a very long planned trip around Hemi Matenga. Another interesting container. TNLNSL. Thanks for the cache and the series!

07-May-16
Found with TregearP during our first walk in the Hemi Matenga Reserve. Beautiful bush, views and bird life. A great loop track but we only managed the caches on one half as we were on limited time. We will be back!

All in good order, TNLNSL, TFTC.

07-May-16
A good day for a walk in the area, beautiful bush and the birdlife was lovely with hardly any other people out walking. TFTC

21-Mar-16
Ninalila and I decided to go for a walk in the bush not far from the place where we stay.
It w as a really nice discovery, great walk and beautiful view when we reached to lookout.
We had the chance to hear the deers roar Smile
The caches were well maintained and easy to find thanks to the really good hints Smile
We finished the walk at night but we found all the one we searched !

First time that i see this kind of cache. Simple but really funny. I add one fav point Wink

We logged with our team name : Lekiprokos

Thank you to the owner for the caches

21-Mar-16
fefe.adrien and I went into the bush to walk until the lookout. The view was very nice ! We could see the mountains of the South Island, then the sunset on Kapiti Island... Moreover we eard the roar of some deers !!
Finally we decided to make all the loop track, it took 4h including the research of boxes.

This serie is fun and pleasant, hints are very precise !! Many thanks because it helped a lot when satellite reception was not so good. Highly recommend this geocache serie ! Wink

We found all the boxes and we signed on logbooks with our team nickname : Lekiprokos Cool

Funny system !! We laught a lot with it ! Like "poupées russes"

Out caching with Cache.Mike today. Who would have guessed that a walk uo a hill would be involved. Of course it would. Smile We needed the hint to get us in the right place here but then found the container. A few minutes later we were also able to sign the log. Some nice "different" hides up here to add to the enjoyment and to give me time to catch my breath.
Thanks tmann421 for the cache.

#7504. A great day to come to Waikanae to walk the trails of Hemi Matenga Memorial Park. Came across quite a number of other walkers in the humid and muggy morning. Fortunately, GZ was all quiet on arrival while on the way up. Quick find. The outer container was more like a regular size than small. The cache was in excellent condition, certainly all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

Visited all the caches in the area today with just-Lookin and replaced the logbooks / logsheets.
Double bagged them or added a small log container and in a few cases added waterproof logs.

Should be good to go for a while!

What a great day! Perfect weather, a great series of caches and in the good company of tmann421 while on a maintenance run today. This is most certainly my favourite bush walk series.

Completed the northern side and heading south along the ridge line and heading down to collect the rest. Found quickly and enjoyed the container(s) keeping the log nice and dry!

TFTC tmann and the series.

Found when out with the Wednesday Wilderness Walkers when out from the Manawatu Tramping and Skiing Club. On the way up we spotted where we thought this cache should be thanks to the good hint but the GPS said no. But on the downward tramp the GPS was led us to the correct spot which was as we thought and the cache was soon in hand. The reference to the Russian dolls makes sense now. TFTC tmann42.

Out with the Wednesday trampers from the Manawatu Tramping and Skiing Club - about 23 of us. Actually found on the way down after walking the loop in a clockwise direction. Soon found and admired the use of multiple containers - the contents are certainly dry! Took the TB. Next visitors should look out for the native green orchids growing on both sides of the track right here at GZ. Thanks tmann421, we all enjoyed this walk on a pleasant, sunny day and finding your caches along the way was a bonus.

12-Nov-15
Lovely day for a hike up the hill. Tftc

03-Oct-15
Second of the afternoon. Quick easy find; this track is certainly easier than Huia to get to the top of!

The smartphone was struggling under the trees but the helpful description got us to the cache.
We dropped in a trackable. Thanks for the cache

08-Aug-15
We looked at a few wrong locations before finding this one, but eventually the cache was located. Thanks.

05-Jul-15
Found quickly with tmann's helpful instructions. Fortunately no need to search and cache soon in hand, log signed and quickly returned. Only just managed it before a jogging muggle came along with her muggle dog. Whew - almost got caught; muggles can appear from any direction at any moment. Tftc.

Not so easy found, because my GPS receive was crap. But then I found this very nice cache.

TFTC & greetings from Germany!

26-Dec-14
This was my second attempt on this cache as the first time I was unsuccessful. We wanted to get out of the house on boxing day and this is one of our favorite walks. We stopped to grab the cache and a drink at the corner. I went scrambling into the bush looking for possible place with no success. Dad took a look at the description and had it in under ten seconds. We dropped off a TB. TFTC Smile

After spending Christmas with family in Wellington, we made our way slowly North again, driving as far as Wanganui and collecting a few caches along the way. Decided to leave the crawling traffic and stop by this reserve and collect a few of the caches in here. Another quick find before turning around and heading back down the hill. Another neat cache, the log should stay dry here! TFTC!

Yet again another podium finish, this one more by good luck than anything else perhaps. Once again we were pipped by Phasevisitor - we need to get out of bed earlier!
Loved the cache set up, thoughts of USSR and girly playthings crossed my mind as I went 'exploring' for the micro. Hahaha...
Cache in order, log signed and then safely re-hidden, just as found.
Off and up the hill now.. huffing and puffing as we go!
