I've been planning to visit Mount Elephant since 2015 and finally I made it! Such lovely views from the top and I always love a good crater. Spoke to a friendly and knowledgeable volunteer. Thank you Pacman for this awesome earthcache
What a well worth place to visit. Local volunteers very helpful. The views from the rim was spectacular. Overall an enjoyable experience. Fav from us. TFTC
Stopped on the way past some time ago to note the requirements to log the cache.
Didn't realise that it was being archived so I'd better pull the old finger out and submit the answers.

Logging with permission from the CO. Found with teamashy on a huge day trip from Geelong to Mt. Gambier and back again. Stopped in town to grab a cache and heading on did a slight detour. We were unable to do a walk as we were so time limited but do enjoy learning from Earth Caches. Through the camera we could see the trig on top too. An amazing view and Info. A Fav Point. Thanks ThePacman.
We were in the area looking at the Vertical Cemetery, worth googling, and took the drive to Mount Elephant. I can see this from my home south of Colac and have driven past but decided to take a closer look today. We collected the key from the cafe not the service station and took a walk to admire the views.
Thanks for the reason to stop Pacman.

Visiting from Texas. Took two photos to show I was there. It was on the drive from Melbourne to Hawkesville. Sending answers.
Driving home to the 'Rat from Warrnambool and a brief stop in Derrinallum for the caches here. Had to look it up on the map when i got home as there was already someone parked at the gates as i arrived which left no room for me and my van! Th The pacman for your EC, answers submitted.
This certainly is a striking hill as you drive past. I didn't feel like attempting to climb it, though - it was getting a little late in the day for that - so I just viewed it from my car. Thanks for the cache and info here.
While passing through this area we stopped here, to admire the view, the visitors center was closed but the youngest member of our team enjoyed telling us all about the Mount and his visit here with his school through the year. Answers collected and sent to CO, Thanks for the fun
Visited on a warm but calm day. Raised a sweat climbing to the trig point but the view was worth it.
Great spot at the crack of dawn...

Today was open day. So we drove into the visitors centre and had a good look around, took some photos but didn't walk up the mount as the rain was coming.
I think we picked the wildest day to visit.
Rain and wind followed by wind and sunshine. Could say we were blown away by this earthcache.

Weekend away with good mates. The travelling party had all caught up by the time we reached here so it was time to stop rest and read a bit. TFTEC.
Headed west for a weekend away adventuring with the boys. Picked up a few easy ones along the way to break up the trip a little.
A nice simple EC this one!

The spectacular Mount Elephant marked the start of a weekend immersion in the western Victorian volcanic region. I have read about it before so it was good to really see it up close.
Logging with permission from the c/o and thanks for bringing me here too. I fondly remember Mt elephant as a child. The many well yearly vacations we took to Warrnambool and always remember the first and dad saying there is mount elephant and told us how it's named so because it looks like an elephant. Travelling to Warrnambool and seeing this in the distance gave me a warm and wonderful feeling of days gone by and began to recall the wonderful times I had with the family. Thanks pacman for the nostalgic trip and bringing me to this grand old elephant
Unfortunately passing through on a day it wasn't open so didn't get to go in. We've gathered the required information and have emailed the CO.
Thanks for the history education

I have actually climbed up this hill and enjoyed the lovely view from up there. I have also seen it from the angle from which it reallly DOES look like an elephant, although I cannot recall where that was.
After a bit of reminiscing today I put together some answers which have been sent off, thanks Pacman.

On our way to the 8 Months to the event in Alexandra - Portland event. We spent the morning cruising the Hamilton Highway, picking up caches along the way. Sully has already done this earthcache, she waited whilst I took some photos and made some estimations. Answers sent to cache owner for checking. My thanks to ThePacman for the earthcache.

Heading on holidays to Warrnambool from Ballarat with hubby and the geo kids today so we decided to grab and quick cache (or seven) on the way! Ive always wanted to walk to the top but as yet time hasn't allowed us to (hopefully one day). Have seen this place from all different angles too so nice to stop and look at it from this direction too. I'm the car we talked about how it is similar to Mt Schack which we walked up and around at Christmas last year. Thanks for the EC - logging with permission.
Stopped off here to grab the info needed for this earth cache and have a look about, while passing from Warrnambool. After passing by for many years, it was interesting to find out more about it.

TFTC. We were driving from Macarthur to Anglesea. As we drove into Lismore I noticed this mount standing like a lonely sentinel. Reminded me a little of Ayres Rock and Mt Connor in the NT in terms of a single rock standing above the surrounding flat lands. With the Motorhome and car intow it was a little difficult to pull up. We managed for minute,

I had an awesome time driving on my maiden voyage in Australia. I decided to drive to SA and then come back for the mega and then back to Pakenham.
13hrs driving, 1100km's and plenty of caches.
This was a great EC to stop at. It was beautiful weather and the info was easy to come by.
I misjudged the measurement but permission was granted to log.

Since moving from New Zealand I have been enjoying the area, exploring and finding caches. I have got a nice streak going and hoping to let it run for as long as possible. This may or may not become easier now that I have found a job but I’m still currently staying with my brother (stinky tom) and his family which includes my nephew (stinky bob).

Day 3 of the girls' road trip to Warrnambool, which then extended out to Bendigo on day 3. On day 4 we picked up another passenger for Harry as the new passenger needed a lift to Adelaide.
Today we cached a little more in Warrnambool before driving to Bendigo, accompanied by micaparamedic in his rental car. We also stopped on the way to say hi to the lovely Sully1 and enjoyed coffee and muffins
There were no DNFs today and a total of 17 caches were found
We drove all the way around Mount Elephant.... unintentionally however it gave us a great view of all of the sides and of the variations in places on the mountain
Arriving at the visitor centre I enjoyed touching the rock display and comparing weights and feel
Loving seeing the volcanic remnants in this state
micaparamedic will send through the information for this earthcache [:X]

What an interesting spot...we not only drove right around Mount Elephant, but we also went into the site and spoke with volunteers at the information centre...WOW, loved it!
Talk about déjà vu ..... this is the second weekend in a row that I have been on a girls caching road trip with Locus Cache to Victoria. This time however it was a fabulous 4 day jaunt AND we may have even brought back a lovely Victorian fella with us (micaparamedic).....ALWAYS an enjoyable time when we hang out!
Kaye and I travelled from Adelaide to the beautiful Warrnambool area to attend a Friday night picnic in the park event and then on Saturday we enjoyed a yummy BBQ lunch at the 1 month to the Surf Coast Mega Event. Bendigo was our next overnight stop and then we headed home....which only took us 15 HOURS!! haha It wasn't the Little Desert National Park we got lost in this weekend, it was Murray Sunset National Park...LOL - but we did get a joint first to find which made the detour all worth it....who needs to get 8hours sleep before needing to be at work the next day anyway??
We targeted a number of caches over the weekend, including some oldies of Alex...very cool finding original ammo cans in the bush and some to help out the D/T grid!
Once again the conversations were highly amusing and we enjoyed lots of belly laughter!! haha [:o)]
We saw kangaroos, emus, lots of birds and a whole heap of water due to recent heavy rains.
GEOCACHING ROCKS!!! [:X]
Thanks for the cache ThePacman!

LouiseAnn and I both took the Friday off to drive down to Warrnambool. We both wanted to walk up to the trig and were psyched up for the effort. Sadly the weather was not in on the deal and it pissed down plus chuck in some wind and cold. Not a good combo for 2 broken limpy types. So we consoled ourselves with a drive up to the gates and an Earthcache.
I had driven past here once before but not being familiar with the area had no idea a cache was here. Nice to have a look at the area.

We picked this cache up at 1:43pm. I was really keen to get hold of the key and walk up to get the GCA trig point at the top, however it had been raining all day and showed no sign of letting up any time soon, so we contented ourselves with this earthcache, but I will be back!
Sharkiefan and I had a big day of caching planned for our trip down to Warrnambool, and most of it was foiled by the rain that poured down non stop for the whole day. This was one of the few caches we found.
Thanks for the cache ThePacman.

On the way home from peridot/olivine fossiking at Mortlake. Found some great gems. I was allowed one cache on the way home. I snuck this additional one in with a quick stop on the side of the road. I like quick EC's with great locations. Tftc.
This icon of the Western District plains is certainly worth having an earth cache. I have in my past climbed and explored its bulk. And it was a pleasure to revisit it. TFTC ThePacman
Came past after doing some work in Warrnambool. This was an interesting read and I will definitely be back to visit properly but today I was only passing and stopped just long enough to collect the info needed TFTC
Sean.75 and I hit the road this morning to grab 1 we missed in Lismore and see what other ones were down this way. We were on a time limit so we thought we might only get a few traditionals. We figured we were going well with time so we swung Emma the georigs nose into the gate way. We ended up driving right up to the construction site to have a closer look as neither of us had been here before. This is definitely a place that we'd like to come back to when we have more time and when Kenbryl and Mippy05 are with us. After much discussion we finally agreed on Q3..... sort of, lol. Thanks for your Earthcache.
Driving all over the country side with kenare, we decided we had enough time to have a crack at this one. After a bit of a debate about Q3 we both came up with a reasonable figure. Tftc and for bringing us here.
Tag along and I enjoyed our walk out to Mount Elephant with friends from Ballarat. We had coffee at the local cafe and then proceeded to take in the sights while we walked out to the Mount.
A local 'guide' showed us around the top of the crater and into the hollow below. He was full of fascinating facts about this area having lived here all his life. We walked up the rim and then down into the crater, where locals used to keep their newly shorn sheep for shelter from the elements.
Their future plans will make it even more of an excellent tourist attraction. The concrete floor is already poured in preparation for their new Visitor Centre.
The weather was perfect and we had some fascinating views. We even managed to locate the army survey benchmark beside the actual trig point.
I'm afraid, only at the top, could I see the elephant. However I believe from other vantage points around Ballarat it appears more readily.
Thanks for highlighting this unique place The Pacman.

3.5 weeks in Australia, 3300 km on the road and also many by foot, lots of animals - some nice (kangaroos, koalas!) and some less nice (spiders, snakes) -, frosty nights in the Blue Moutains, heavy storms and rainfall, and finally lovely sunny weather at the Gold Coast, many nice and relaxed people: this was a really great holiday in Australia! And not to forget: 80 caches found
Interesting hill on our road trip today. Unfortunately, everything was closed, so we just enjoyed the view from the gate.

Honeymoon in Down Under - what a great experience an wonderful time! We were able to travel from Melbourne to Brisbane (including Great Ocean Road, Bendigo, Echuca, Canberra, Blue Mountains, Sydney, Hunter Valley, Port Macquarie and many other great places!) 3,5 weeks in total. Of course we also had to search for some containers and Eclipse-boxes !

After a great time at the Skipton Cave Event buzzmc and the ageing Bushfire decided to go for a drive to Derri and this guy was on our list.
The area is open every Sunday now from 1-4 pm (Subject to weather conditions, not open on TFB days) and a key is available if you call one of Mount Elephant Community Management Team or as Joe has stated from the local service station.
We had a great chat to the ladies who were on duty last Sunday and they were very impressed after we explained why we were there.
I was impressed with the different sizes of the material in the actual pit.
A new building is about to be built in front of the small shack that is there at the moment so will be worth another visit in a few months time.
Answers have been sent to Joe and this will be my 78th Earth Cache if they pass.

On a mission to explore the underground world in Skipton, we paused to learn a little more about this distinctive scoria cone. The elephant has always been a significant landmark for our family, as it is visible from all points of the compass and from long distances, on clear days as we travel through and around Western Victoria.

We were on our way back home from a 2 night getaway in Warrnambool, and this fabulous earthcache was an ideal stopover. We have seen Mt Elephant from many vantage points in the distance in the past (and can even see it from the hills near home), but have never been up close with it before. We did not realise there was a visitor centre here, and now that we know this, we will return one day when we have the time to fully explore. Thank you Pacman for this great earthcache.
Have always wanted to have a closer look however it was not Sunday and the gates are locked.

Been past here twice now and never stopped. The first time I saw this place only this year and thought WOW, this would be an awesome earthcache - I wonder if there's one here?
Yes! of course there is! and one by the maestro himself -ThePacman.
Good to see it was open and drove on up to GZ and had a good look around however, decided not to go walkies as had two younglings in tow.
So, we opted to look around at the quarried section looking and examining the rocks here instead.

We were heading from Geelong to Warrnambool, but this was the reason we took this route. Was drizzling when we arrived so didn't bother getting the gate key. I even enjoyed looking at the detail in the rock walls at the front gate. We must come back on a day we can explore more. Thanks for bringing us here!!!

Mount Elephant is certainly an impressive volcanic outcrop on the landscape. When we arrived we were initially disappointed that the gate was locked. Then we read the cache notes more carefully and found details of getting a key. We went into town and met a very helpful bloke who is very committed, along with others, to caring for Mount Elephant. We then went back to Mount Elephant and drove to the Visitor Centre. From there Mrs y'stassie climbed to the top. It was very windy but geology and the views made it very worthwhile. Answers to the questions have been forwarded to the CO. Thanks The Pacman for providing this very enjoyable Earthcache, the detailed information about this volcanic feature and details for getting access when the gate is closed. This cache certainly earns a favourite from us.
On the way to Geelong with brisal5, another fun weekend of caching and laughter.... A great location, logged with permission.
Thanks
Thanks
Heading to Geelong for a caching weekend with mogni. As always getting there is half the fun with many stops and caches to be found.
Stopped in here but the gates were locked. Would have liked to have a closer look but getting a key and coming back will have to wait for another day. Answers have been emailed and logged in anticipation. Thanks ThePacman.

Great to see this area returned to public use. Pity I couldn't get in on day I was here.

Spiffy- and I embarked on a 900km round day trip from Melbourne to Stawell then Hamilton and Mortlake. This was a planned cache on our route. The Elephant was visible some 20km off and as we approached started guessing the clue for question3. Turns out we were a little way off. Thanks ThePacman for the cache.
A long one day road trip today for Fleabag- and I to finish off our dates placed calendar, more importantly our P81 Difficulty / Terrain grid as well and also a few LGA zones for Fleabag- towards his LGA Challenge cache. We left home at 5am and drove over 900 kms today and finished about 7pm and completed both goals so it was an awesome day.
On our way here we started trying the guess question 3 from the other side of the mountain. We were a fair bit off. See Fleabag's log for a photo of both of us on site.
Thanks ThePacman for the cache, the hunt and the fun.

The GeoBears are traveling and needing a break, so I click open the app on my phone to see what caches are around. Not having done an Earth cache before it was the first one I looked at. It seemed easy enough so that was the GeoBears target. Fetched our mascot to pose him on the sign, got what we needed and we were back on the road.

Permission to log sought.
Finally on my way home from Mount Gambier, heading for Vermont in Melbourne's eastern suburbs, sort of a round about trip across the coastline and somewhat inland chasing a few earth-caches.
A wet, cold and drizzly day it was for my visit to this location. Although I have driven past this spot many times, this is the first time to stop. And like every other cache today, even in these dreary conditions, it put a smile on my dial!
Thanks for placing this cache ThePacman

Thanks we really enjoyed this. We rang the number on the sign and asked if we could walk in. It was OK so we walked in and climbed Mt Elephant and did the crater walk. Always wanted to climb Mt Elephant after driving past on numerous occasions!
Logged with permission. Driving along and we saw the sizes name and exposed volcanics and thought there must be a cache so checked on our new app and nothing. Thinking that was a bit odd we checked on our previous app and there it was. We didn't have time to go back and get the key for a walk but will keep it in mind for next time. TFTEC
Great spot to stop off on our way to Hamilton. We would really like to come back and have a visit up the hill when it is open on Sundays. We can see across to Mt.Elephant from Red Rock, Alvie on a clear day. It is a great view. TFTC ThePacman email coming.
Quick stop here as time poor today. We read the listing with interest and have emailed our answers TFTC and for making us stop here and learn more about this feature we love earth caches
I was driving back from Warrnambool this afternoon grabbing a few caches on the way and this earth cache was next. Parked at GZ and even braved the howling gale to have a bit of a look around, the gate was closed but it certainly looks like this would be a great place to walk around. Thanks heaps to ThePacman for bringing me here and highlighting the history and geology.
Found by Mary & David at 1145. Mary's Dad used to be the teacher at Darlington School in the mid-50s, so she remembers this area well. We have several caches along the Volcanoes Discovery Trail, one of which {Mahout (Vulcan 9)) was here in the crater from August 2003 to November 2005. Glad to see the access to the Mount has increased since then. Very impressed by the entrance walls which have been added since our last visit, as has the Visitors Centre. Great additions to the site. Our answers have been sent. Our thanks to ThePacman.
# 6891. Travelling to Portland with Robmc and hoping to add a few smilies along the way.
Robmc has submitted our answers to the CO and we have received permission to log. Unfortunately no access to the site for us as the gates were padlocked. Hopefully, another time.
Thanks ThePacman

Off to do some diving down at Portland with The Morris and BettyBoo3747. Straight off nights shift, and into the passenger's seat. We did a few caches on our way down.
A nice view of Mount Elephant, I usually only see it from a distance.
Unfortunately the visitor's centre wasn't open today, but we shall return.
Thanks Joe for the prompt reply to our answers.

3774 found by baby&Mrs gopher. This earthcache was on the to do list for our trip through the district. We drove from the SSW headed towards Geelong. A magnificent sight from all perspectives the view of Mount Elephant. The cone is covered in green all the way to the top. At the tourist information center at the ANZ office the lady told us that soon the facility will be open most days. If anyone would like to have a closer look they can organize access. Well worth the stop to investigate. Tnx The Pacman
thanks for the cache& confirmation email Pacman, this was the geo hubby's first earth cache
Completed this earth cache on the way back from an event in Ballarat. Last badge to get the souvenirs. Travel past this area many times, so it was interesting to stop and read the history.tftec
There never seems to be enough daylight in winter time to fit in everything I have planned for a days caching. Fortunately inspecting the profile of Mount Elephant wasn't too challenging even in the fading winters late afternoon daylight. I wasn't aware that people were permitted to enter the area, my thanks to the co for showing me a fantastic new place open to explore. This cache fulfilled part of the August souvenir challenge, and was a worthy addition to the earth cache component. tftc
Found with Outnabout after a surprise visit. Couple of enjoyable caches have just topped if a great weekend. TFTC.
