I remember many years ago travelling this road. Now Im doing it all again. Its hot and dusty with some rough gravel roads. Shook us all up. Left my calling card here. Cheers.
Day 14, Wednesday 2 February - Gisborne - Tolaga Bay - Anaura Bay - Omanuka Bay - then the back road from Togaga Bay to Gisborne on a TMGT hunt for the day. Stopping off at Grays Bush on our way back to Zara. Come on Lenny and Toby lets get moving!
Zara, Toby, Lenny and I are on our North Island expidition for a couple of weeks. Got The Seagnoid along for the first 4 days, heading to the Auckland Mega. PWGTs and TMGTs are on the radar for this trip. Lots of driving on gravel roads and visited lots of amazing places on our 6000km road trip snagging 200+ caches along the way. Visiting Cape Reinga, Bay of Islands, Gisborne and White Rock along our journey. The highlight cache for the trip was GC815zh Journey to Pandora (night cache in Ack) Another awesome trip. Thanks to all CO's.

I decided to go on the Gisborne Grand Tour today and being Sunday I was hoping that there would be no logging operations. I was right and very thankful. About 33km of these roads are one lane gravel with big potholes and sometimes with a ridge down the middle. Definitely don't want to do this in your 2WD vehicle. I also recommend taking a radio that has channels 84 and 86 on it. My handheld only went to 80. Luckily I only met two other vehicles and that was when I was climbing the hills up from Tolaga Bay, one was going my way and warned me that a stock truck was coming down one of the single lane parts of the road. PHEW!
Cheers for the cache.
Cheers for the cache.
I didn't know what to expect with this series but so far so good. Nice wide country road with plenty of straight areas. Will be interesting to see whether it stays like this all the way back to Gisborne.

#8037. Prior to driving north to locate the TMGT caches in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, I contacted the CO (who lives nearby) see whether they wanted me to replace any caches in the series that had gone missing after the big flood a few years ago and some additional major flooding since 2018. They gave me the green light to put in new containers and shift the caches to nearby more secure locations. This one has had a checkered history of finds since the big flood, DNF from me after a forensic search of every hint object in 2019 and then a replacement cache put out by the last visitors. Today we just put in a fresh container at the most secure remaining spot by the bridge. The CO has the new coordinates and hints and will hopefully update the web page soon. Thanks taybee nz for showing us this hidden valley behind Tolaga Bay.
In meantime the cache can be found at S38 20.709 E178 12.032

Part of an extended long weekend with GSEL, to a part of NZ I hadn't visited in over 10 years. This bit of today's trip was on behalf of a nearby CO, As we suspected, the area had changed somewhat since the cache was placed, so GSEL provided a replacement. TFTC
With Gap (of Fap and Gap)... We decided mid week to have a crack at the TMGT caches along the Hawke’s Bay-Tairāwhiti Coast. This is definitely an ambitious journey requiring caching self-control - There isn’t time for collecting big numbers, with lots of driving in between.
The Grand Tour caches were supposed to bring us back to Highway 2 and home. This was our first stop in the series, and it was obviously missing. We thought we’d do the caching community thing and replace this hide - This was probably a foolish move... It appears that most of this trail is missing or requires checking. Thanks taybee nz and TFTC.

Well today was another of these days. Huge mileage to get a few caches. Trying to get all the TMGT caches in this region.
Early start with Squirrel Nutcase. First stop Taradale then a loop around Hawkes Bay, up to Poverty Bay and back home arriving at midnight.
Napier was extremely busy around the port so the TMGT cache took a little to get.
Made the mistake of trying to claim the Gisborne Grand Tour Caches on return trip. This I wouldn't suggest any body try this route until the cache owner has done a huge maintenance trip. Most caches are missing due mostly to storm damage and road is marginal in some places. Anyway TMGT completed in area. SLTFTC

No joy here. Checked around all the posts in the area. No container found. I see it was found 2 weeks ago after all the extensive flooding in the area so I guess that means I missed it. Not sure where it was as I looked everywhere.
Found but log book is saturated so could not sign. TFTC but might need a waterproof log?

vůbec nerozumím historii kešky, našli jsme krabičku, která se skoro rozpadala a šla špatně otevřít, ale logbook i sáček vypadají jako nové a je tam jen jeden zápis... že by někde byla ještě jedna?

Cache is back up and running thanks to a local cacher who is doing a maintenance run for me
thanks W.E.K.A for the head up on the Cache

This must surely be the worst geocache series we have ever attempted. We found only 3 of the 10 caches and this was the first of the 7 DNFs. We suggest other cachers don't bother with the long drive required until the cache owner has checked the series.
out with taybee and taybee nz. nice and over cast day. doing some maintenance so soon in hand. thank you taybee and taybee nz for a awesome day. hope to catch up soon. TFTC TFTD (thanks for the day)
