18. november 2024 12.14# 4932Wauw - one of the real oldies Thank you for keeping this activeFirst time in New Zealand and obviously we should try to find some cachesFound with our youngest daughter - 'gida' Geogreetings from Denmarkviridis / Peter & Charlotte TFTC
Today we have a few very special caches on the agenda. Some with lots of favorite points that made us curious and two "old caches" were successfully conquered. We also visited traditional caches, lab caches and a multi cache. A break on the beach, where we watched the fisherman on the pier and the children, rounded off a great day. With the caches was everything fine and we give an Favoritenpoint. All Ownern many thanks and greetings from the Moorhelmi
We are really enjoying our scenic drives around Christchurch and seeing some amazing areas and doing some lovely little walks. And weve got caches like this one to thank for that. Thanks Interesting to see a whole bunch of other Queenslanders autographs in the logbook Also nice reading the interesting muggles log from 27 August 2024 about the cabbage tree. The cache container is very broken but the ziplock bag is keeping the logbook dry for now. Thank you
CaptainVimes and I have crossed the ditch to attend the Geo Toroa mega in Dunedin and tour around the South Island for two weeks.Beautiful morning for a walk through the fields with the sheep. Being placed in March 2001, I think this find completes my second AUSNZmer loop. Thanks kiwetrex and happy caching

Lovely walk.. we caught an uber to the carpark at the top and wandered down the hill saying hi to the sheep. Cache is a bit worse for wear new container needed. Fav point for the age and the view and for filling in a hole in my found by hide date grid.
Fangsoki had been here before but he accompanied me to the cache. It was not an easy walk for me but I made it and Fangsoki made the retrieval of the cache for me.The walk back down was much easier.TFTCkiwetrex
Pretty wet and windy. The sheep weren't too keen. Didn't see any small lambs though. Good to find such an old cache. Great views, even in the rain. TFTC *Found with [Geooh GO](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobiltal.geoohGO)*
Touring around with a lovely group of Aussie geo friends for a few days in Christchurch, picking up some solved puzzles, and selected others on our to-do list. All finds today were in great condition and a credit to the CO's who place and maintain them for the benefit of the geocaching community.Enjoyed this find and a favourite point from me.
Thanks for placing and maintain for our enjoyment Found with Snickersallan, Wollaston and chamadVisiting Christchurch for a few days before heading down to attend Geotora Mega
Very happy to capture this oldie. And the view!Outnabout with Chamad, Snickersallan & Bluewattle on my first ever trip across the ditch. After a week of caching around Brisbane and at events last month with other Geo friends, I couldnt pass up the opportunity to hop on board for a NZ Mega adventure. Another great day for caching. TFTC kiwetrex
Container is broken but log is nicely bagged and dry. If reading this please bring a medium container to replace.Could have driven almost all the way. Huntsberry Ave and the dirt road running beside Huntsbury Track. Maybe not in the wet in a 2WD. Day 2 and chasing oldies and challenges today before heading south. Finally back in NZ and this time for a Mega. Starting in Christchurch before heading south. Lots to see and do with Kittykatch and Grimraider. Will be joining with others as the days go on.Thanks for getting me out and about kiwetrex
Dunedin MegaWe could have driven to the top in our car but walked up and oart of the way back down. . Views are spectacular. Cache container is broken but new log book is dry. GrimRaider, Joolay and I are in NZ for the Dunedin mega event. It is great to be back to see more of this beautiful country. Thanks for hiding this cache kiwetrex
Rattll and I are on our way south to Dunedin for GeoToroa. But first, a few days caching around Canterbury and Christchurch, targeting a few oldies and unusuals. Today we started early in the Port Hills, but the best laid plans of mice and men... Suffice to say that we were constantly reassessing our priorities today, and changing our plans to suit. Many blue words were said (mainly by me), but, parked up by Lake Ellesmere, just out of Leeston, tonight, we both agreed that we were happy with what we've achieved today. Picked up our target caches, plus a couple of unexpected pearlers, and a decent tally for the day. This was our second target cache for the day. Having wound our way up through the streets of Huntsbury, we parked the van at the end of the road, and began the slow, hot walk up the track. We soon realised that we were gaining on an elderly gentleman ahead. He kept turning around to guage our progress, maybe hoping for a chat? He must have been a little surprised when we veered off while his back was turned. At GZ, no problems finding the cache as per the hint. The box is cracked and broken, but the contents are all good. Signed, and returned as found. FP for another old cache, filling a hole in the Jasmer grid. Tftc!
Today was another stunningly hot day. We decided rather than go for big numbers, we'd aim to get some of the 'target' caches we wanted for our jasmer grids, the old school caching challenge, a wherigo for anotherchallenge, and any other older caches we came across. This 'oldie' was one we really wanted to get. I was a little worried how the legs would hold up after this morning's bike ride on the Port Hills, but we were at GZ way quicker than I expected. No problems making the find. I left a pet rock - a Parrot. Thanks for putting this here all those years ago
Other old one found thanks for maintenance on this one keep it going needs a new container cheers
We hadn't planned any hikes really at all - and although this was not far at all, it did provide a great walk with great views. There were sheep grazing all around us with their lambs they seems curious of us, not afraid. GZ had a lovely shady place to sit, sign the log and once more admire the view. Thanks kiwetrex, fav point for location and age.PS I also learnt what a cabbage tree was
Golden oldie time we were the black sheep ?? amidst the white ones..this cache needs some love and a new container the initial plan was to park further afield but l'm glad we changed our minds at the last minute.it was a beautiful walk among the sheep..many were greeted with our hellos and many more were photographed by SnipsandCo
Last day in Christchurch before flying home super early in the morning. I wanted to grab a few oldies and favourites to cap out our stats. Loved the sheeps in the fields and the cabbage trees at this one.Great to grab an oldie with an original log and container I think!OCW irondaleWeather: overcast, windy, coolWeirdos seen: noneSheep spotted: lots of them- a sprinkling of sheeps all over the hillSnack situation: breakfast burrito and real fruit ice cream A+TFTC
The cache contents were in good condition considering the cache container is broken. I originally planned to get this cache when out with a walking group a couple of weeks ago but it wasnt possible
This was my main target for today, as this elusive month fills the penultimate gap on my full JASMER grid, which I am hoping to complete in Brisbane next week.I parked up as suggested on Huntsbury Avenue & set off for the slow plod up the track to GZ. A couple of mountain bikers passed me (very quickly) heading downhill; several hikers more sedately, only one fit young man overtook me power walking uphill! My progress was rewarded, however, with ever-increasing views out across the city to the snow-capped mountains in the west. Before long the terrain became more rocky & I reached a locked gate about 40m from GZ. This has never stopped me before although the gate didn't look the best access point. But a little further on the fence was lower & more inviting so I hopped over to follow the arrow. The coordinates got me close enough to easily spot this cache, although the outer container is in a bit of a state. Fortunately the inner contents were secure & dry & it was fascinating to see the original logbook. I signed the later incarnation & dipped my *Horses Around the World* geocoin which only visits caches older than 20 years before replacing everything carefully as found. Thanks for keeping this old one going, although I do fear for its long term future being in its current state.Found at 12:25Cache #10353TFTC kiwitrex
So great to get this old cache - the last I need for the Old School Challenge in the hills behind Dunedin. The container is broken and wont keep the rain out. I double-bagged the logbook but didnt have a spare container with me.Fantastic view from up here- a lovely morning for a walk. TFTC
Thanks kiwetrex For this cache! Found on the 10/05/24@04:58:53 p.m..Walked up here in the strong wind, grey old day. Found the cache and signed the log in the wind. TFTC Nice to find Chch's Oldest Cache!#358---Logs signed with qwertyuiopasdfghjk66 or Q-6
This was my first destination on our ahort visit to Christchurch. It is always a pleasure to find ancient, revered caches such as this one. It also fills a rogue gap on my Jasmer grid, which delighted me. Getting to GZ proved a little tricky, but I wasn't going to let anything stop me from following the arrow. Have a FP for being so old . Tftc
Came with a friend for an evening walk one day. Can't believe this is still the original container!

Afternoon after the rain I found some special caches like challengies and the oldies and I also took a nice walk to the Takahe lookout over the city and Port Hill for a cache from 3/2001. The path was fine, but the cache was behind a fence in a sheep pen. I had to climb over the fence and hope that there was no ram nearby. It turned out well, cache found. Beautiful views there. Thanks for the cache and greetings from Czech republic.
With a rental car only for one day, my plan for Rolleston and Lincoln changed due to the weather. Instead of getting lots, I focused on high fav numbers and to get only a few. The day had sort of improved but was quiet windy. Set search to 50+, wasn't aware there was a 700m walk each way, if it wasn't for an old one, I probably would have skipped, but though I better walk off my Carl's Jnr lunch.Took a rest on bike ramp, then realized only 200m to go. Very blustery at top, had to hold onto logbook tightly. Pleased to get back to car, very sweaty now though.
This cache is one of our prizes on our trip to NZ. It completes our year 2001 on our grid. We came nearly half way around the world for this one. We live on N55 W002 and this is S43 E172, thats almost 180! Made our way across to GZ and found in the second place we looked. We did a little caching jig, signed and replaced as found.
I'm from Paihia/Whangarei and I'm down in the South Island for 6 days with NZ_B on a geocaching trip.I had a few goals for the trip and I was very pleased to achieve them all *50 or 60 puzzles for my diamond badge on project gc*40 caches to get to my 6000th find*some South Island minutes for a challenge*but mostly a clean out of my ever growing solved puzzle list.Monday we collected the windmill geoart on our way to Oamaru. Tuesday the focus was solved A2O puzzles, the sunflowers and other solved puzzles. Wednesday we headed back to Christchurch collecting challenges and more solved puzzles. Thursday's focus was the Smile series around Lake Ellesmere. Today it's the old Port Hills cache and puzzles in the Christchurch area. We decided to get this early on thinking if the weather turned bad we'd have it signed off. Turns out the day improved significantly in the afternoon but was rather wet and cold this morning when we did this cache. We initially parked at the end of the tarseal and began walking but we quickly decided against that as the rain began. I had gumboots and a rain jacket but it was still very cold. We then drove our car further up and sat waiting for the worst rain to pass before making our second attempt. It still spat on us but we didn't have far to go to get to gz. I took it slowly clambering down. Lovely cabbage trees and an easy to find cache which could do with a replacement container. Thanks for keeping this old cache going
A rather cold, wet and windy day to attempt finding this cache, but we did. The gates were open so we were able to drive within 141 metres of the cache -we didnt get too cold not too wet.Although the view was spoilt by raindrops on glasses and low cloud the shape of cabbage tree and surrounding environment made up for it. See the photo. Im very pleased to have found this oldie.Day 5 of The North Islanders in Canterbury tour with Liss Crew. We are targeting specific caches -oldies, and puzzles. Of course, there will be days of laughter.During our time here, all found caches were signed as NZL, regardless of whether either of us has found it previously, or with individual names for Challenge Caches according to whomever was claiming the find.Kia ora rawa atu for the cache kiwetrex.
So pleased to stumble across this solid gold oldie. And with an original - and fully used! - logbook. Container is beginning to show her age but everything is dry and intact.
Trust me to leave a great cache to the last.
I have been to Christchurch several times but have not grabbed this cache. I was eager to right this wrong this visit.
1MinnieMoo and I parked up - as our van would get bogged in a small puddle - and made our way up the hill - enjoying the sights.. the lambs.. the incessant bleating of sheep
We finally arrived at GZ and was awe-inspired by the view. This is a fantastic cache. We found the cache and signed the log.
It was a cold but quicker trip back down toward the car. We were happy to get back in the warmth of the van. TFTC kiwitrex

Today marks day 2 of the NZ adventures for me and Fangsoki. We didn’t have much time left on our day and really wanted to get this cache before nightfall. And I am so glad we did. A nice hike through the countryside had me feeling the youth of the spring lambs! Those baby lambs are sooo cute!!
A multitude of photos and video later and I had cache in hand.
Then it was time to bound back down the hill with the lambs, giggling at their little wagging tails, and back to the car.
Thanks for the cache kiwetrex.

Took a few minutes, think it had migrated, returned per hint. Container is cracked but logbook dry. Thanks for the old one kiwetrex, on my way to the SI challenge.
Cache 1441 ️ Heading to Christchurch for a geocaching holiday this week where I’m targeting hidden days/months and a few D/T and to sign challenge caches. And as many virtuals as possible. This of course was a must do golden Oldie while I was up here, it was a bit cooler today but that didn’t put me off The hill was not as bad as I was expecting and I was soon where I needed to be, There are 3 cabbage trees now close to GZ but the coordinates are bang on so a quick find. The container is all cracked and brittle it may benefit from a replacement but logs are in good shape. Stunning view from up here T4TC ️
Out and about in Chch to pick up so.e much needed caches to complete some challenges. Fantastic views worth the walk. Tftc
It's time to find this elderly cache at long last as it has been on my must do list ever since I discovered there were very few of this age available. Found cache all good and took a quick look back at the history captioned within the log books. A few very familiar names and a lot of ones I have never heard of from all over the world.
Found it easily as the lid and contents were scattered around and are now quite damp! Have put back together and hidden as per hint.
Tftc - awesome to see original logbook from 2001!

Making my way up to Mt Vernon via this route - noting I was on the mountain bike track but I only saw 1 person riding down it. Spotted the cabbage trees from a distance and started making my way over. Then decided to approach from lower rather than higher. Cache was quickly found and I sat sheltered from the wind to sign the log. Took photo of the yellow piece of paper as the original idea and activity for this cache was very interesting, unable to be done now but based on the log book people are still doing interesting things while here, I took a video. Also the replacement log book that been going for 1 month short of 10 yrs has lots of interesting stories in it. Especially Wayne G from 7-3-2023 - I'm now going to look at the digital logs hopefully to see his photo. Favourite point for the original intention and the longevity of this cache. LOVE how the original log book is still in there too like someone else said feels like i have found a vintage - just looked at publication date WOW 2001 - been going for 22 yrs!!!!!! incredible. I have just scrolled through all the photos on the cache page from the last 23 yrs - VERY INTERESTING.
The contain was all cracked but everything was dry as his has a great resting spot.
I've come to ChCh for a few days to visit my teen who going to Uni here. Given teenagers/uni students don't get up before it pm I had some time to do my own activity. I searched the map for areas to go with either 'good numbers' or 'interesting location' that were also easy to get to by bus (Good Friday too). I was initially going to do the Bridal Path over near gondola then spotted this Mt Vernon area and the bus stop was right beside this high favourite cache with a path leading straight on to the Huntsburry Track up the hill.
We're currently travelling New Zealand in search of adventures. Continuing to explore the South Island, and back in Christchurch for a few days.
10 March 2023 - Cache Number 2915
Following the GPS to make a quick find here . The log book is in good condition but the container has a big hole, so any adverse weather might see some problems! TFTC

A high priority cache. I parked up at the end of the Tarseal and walked up the rest of the way. The weather seemed to be better up here Than down in the city. A pleasant stroll up the track and back down the road. The cache was found and the logbook signed. I have now found the oldest 10 caches in the South Island, Just a trip to Dunedin required now to find the Old School Challenge.
As others have mentioned the container is a bit munted, but it doesn't seem to be causing any problems. Cheers and TFTC

spent 6 great weeks in New Zealand with my The start was a bit bumpy (Cyclone Gabrielle) but then it got better and better. We travelled to both islands and discovered a lot. We photographed and filmed many beautiful things, but most of it stayed in our hearts.
Almost everywhere we stopped, a cache was already waiting for us. Most of the caches are well maintained and easy to find.
With mostly very nice weather, we saw a lot of this impressive island. In many places, caches were waiting for us, which were sometimes easy and sometimes difficult to find. This cache was also included and was successfully signed
We puzzled a lot in advance and the tours were well prepared
So this box was also well found.
now I have another on my personal cache card.
many thanks to [^] **kiwetrex** [^] for the effort and the cache and greetings from Germany

This is my fourth geocaching excursion to **beautiful New Zealand**!
Due to Covid [xx(] I had to wait for 3 long years to again return to my beloved Middle-Earth [xx(].
This time it is (was ) a road trip enduring for 26 days, covering both North- and South-Island.
Sadly, everything comes to an end [xx(]...
Today was the second-last caching-day - but the weather was fine and the tour turned out to be very rewarding !
This geo-treasure contributed to the finds of today. Cool! [^]
It's the final/last find for me for the 10 oldest caches on the South Island... [:X]
A big thanks to the owner kiwetrex [:X] for hiding and long-term-maintaining this 'oldie' cache [^] - and best regards from Germany !

Today we went to this beautiful 2001er. After a good walk with a lot of sheep contact, the find was made very quickly. I was very happy about the original log book. The can itself is not doing so well. One page is completely gone. In heavy rain there is a risk of flooding. You should have a look here. Many thanks and warm greetings from the Marauder from Braunschweig, Germany.

Feels like a vintage find. Found with freerangehumans23. Perfect day for a walk! Tftc.
This old cache was on the NZ trip bucket list due to having an essential missing month for the Jasmer grid. After this one only 5 holes left. This was an easy climb among sheep. This vital find is my cache find #6001. So time to celebrate. Greetings from Finland. +FP
Geo-Roadtrip in the South Island with TrinityNZ and JustlookingOO to collect some PWGT's and as many other caches as we can.Back in Chch for our flight back to Wellington. This was on our oldies list from March 2001, a great one for the Jasmer grid. What an adventure! With super strong winds, and not knowing exactly where we were, and weren't, allowed to go, we finally came to GZ. I clambered down to get our prize, which unfortunately is broken, but still dry and safe. The instructions in the cache were a bit confusing? I'm assuming once upon a time there was an activity to carry out upon finding the cache. Names added, photos taken, then on to our next cache on the list. Thanks so much for bringing me here! I love Chch, having lived here for 3+ years, and being up here reminds me how much I miss it. FP added.
Down for a long weekend roadie with LL113 and TrinityNZ chasing PW GeoTour and Challenge caches - this one was an "oldie" for us.
The views were amazing and the winds extreme (later to cause issues with our flight).Treaded quietly as it was obvious lambing season was was on its way.
Terrain variable at gz meant there was a rock clamber involved. Our most nimble soon had cache in hand. Noticed the cache container had a good sized hole one end, so definitely no longer waterproof. Suggest needing replacing.
TFTC kiwetrex - a great experience.

I think we did this the hard way, as we ended going over (through) a fence with barbed wire! LL113 made the trek down the last steep bit to claim the cache. No balloons in the cache, and the container is disintegrating so recommend it is replaced.
Even without the barbed wire fence, this is not a terrain 1. There’s no way a wheelchair could get anywhere near GZ and there are some steep parts so we feel it’s more like a 2.5 or 3.
Thanks for bringing us to this spot with lovely views.

The cache container is damaged with significant holes. Would recommend replacing or the next person coming up bring a replacement container.
Another in a series of random trips around the country, this weekend brings my down to Christchurch for a road trip down to Timaru for the Saturday night, and back home to Wellington on Sunday. With only a few real life commitments in between I had plenty of spare time for targeting some specific caches along the way (as required for some of my geocaching goals), as well as a few random others. This was one of them.
This was one of my target caches for the weekend. I always enjoy finding the older ones, and this CA he has been happily receiving logs for over twenty years now. I parked up down by the quick access point and negotiated my way up past the mountain bikers and sheep for a relatively easy find. Log paperwork is all good, however the current container is starting to become brittle and has a couple of holes in the base.
Thanks to kiwetrex for placing this cache here.

Lovely up here, best kind of geocaching away from muggles and a bigger cache. Thanks!
This was one of two destination caches for me today, having landed at Chch this morning. The other was a DNF so very happy to see this one snuggled in. I certainly didn't take the terrain one route But found where promised. Thank you for keeping this oldie going. Just Dunedin left for the 10 oldest in the SI now. TFTC.
A road trip in to uncharted territory so why not .
Loaded up the cache mobile and headed up the road and let's see what fun adventures awaite us.

Quick find here. Second of the day, and the target cache as it fills a hidden month hole. Good to see this oldie still in great shape. Nice spot and great views. TFTC kiwetrex. FP from me for keeping it going.
RG72 and I are in Chch for the long weekend to catch up with family and celebrate a few birthdays. And with the weather forecast not looking great for much of it, we went out late this morning for a walk in the hills.
Nothing too taxing, just 4km covered with a bit of elevation thrown in of course, but 5 caches targeted and all found in pretty good nick. Nice views too. Thanks all.

Day #7 of my Geotour.
A short day from Akaroa to Christchurch, although there were plenty of side trips.
This was one of my "must do" caches for this trip as my March 2001 box needs ticking.
A nice walk, good views and a quick find.

This cache has been on my hit list for some time, being one of the 10 oldest caches in the South Island. At the venerable age of 20 years and still going, this is pretty impressive. We enjoyed the walk up to the cache today, a surprising number of other people walking and biking, but not heading to where we were going. Thanks for maintaining this, found with Debsnz (previous finder) and Aoraki Sheep.
Mrs nzk especially wanted to find this old cache while we were in the area so we came for a walk today. We parked the car and walked up the track. Once at GZ we found the cache quickly and in good condition. We enjoyed the great views from here and also watched a farmer moving some sheep. TFTC kiwetrex! A fave from us.
Down from Northland for a one week trip to Christchurch to pick up some solved puzzles, challenges, unusual cache types, Jasmer grid fillers, as well as a few others in passing.
Time for a few out west and south today and then returned to our accommodation to watch the Americas Cup racing. Once that was finished it was out the door again to get this nearby oldie and any others we could before dark.
I hadn't really planned on driving the rental cache mobile up this road, but the gate was open, so we headed on through with wheels spinning in the deep loose gravel. Once I stopped, I realised we had overshot the oldie and were next to another one, so just had to go look for it first.
Back down the hill a bit, I parked up and headed over to this one. The wind was blowing a gale and I had to be careful once the cache was found, that nothing got blown away. Probably a T3 in today's conditions. Nice to see a real oldie and log books almost since the start. TFTC

Team BOP on another crazy mission to the South Island. Lockdown gave us a lot of free time that we directed into Canterbury’s many Geo-Arts and with the Auckland 2020 Mega postponement, Christchurch was an easy decision.
So it's Labour Weekend 2020, it’s a numbers mission and on our last day we're having a wander around the Port Hills before we head to the airport. We have a lot of caches to choose from today and we're looking to spend some of our freshly acquired favourite points. This cache was found quickly and in good condition thanks to accurate coords, a straight forward placement and a good hint. Always nice to grab an oldie like this one, Cheers kiwetrex & TFTC

Another old cache ticked off for a challenge. Wasn’t sure if you were allowed to drive up but soon saw others doing it once we started walking. Quickly found at GZ. Great views. Found with indiboo. Visiting from Dunedin. Tftc
