Great Northern escape 2022 Day 113. Lotus Creek to Marlborough. I got moving fairly quickly to get the twenty or so army caches I had left to do today before leaving Lotus Creek. That all went smoothly, and then I returned to the Marlborough series. That is a bit up and down these days. I saw some very interesting caches and a few odd locations. I then settled into the Marlborough pub caravan park for a quiet afternoon and a dinner in the pub.

With the van on now, this was a good place to stop, and a reminder that this one used to be the main road. The area is looking a bit worn out now, but the cache was in place.

Thanks for the cache cache me up

Fun, adventure, travel, history, geology, mental stimulation, social gatherings, support and friendship are just some of the elements of geocaching.

Out and about enjoying the opportunity to grab a few caches, yours being one of those I targeted on my journey today. Thanks ??

Thanks cache me up (F=317 H=37) for placing this cache and adding to our game.

09-Apr-22
Micaparamedic, Team Crackers, Geoturtle37 and myself decided to tackle the many caches in the area and see how many we could find. We enjoy searching for caches and the places they take us.
The grass today wasn't nearly as much of a problem as it was yesterday so that helped make the searching easier.
This cache brought back memories for GT37 as she got to see the more recent torch on a number of occasions and even handle it . . . . only a replica given to those that carry the real thing. She has great memories of the story the gentleman told her re his participation.
Thank you for the cache.

09-Apr-22
Day 2 in the area with micaparamedic, Geoturtle37 and Papi4506 picking up a few caches while slowly working our way to the Queensland Mega and today we targeted the letterbox series for a challenge down in Melbourne that we all want to get and these will help s qualify.
After grabbing the Adventure Lab All the big things stage in Sabrina we decided to try our luck with the VC series.

We had finished this series with only three Dnf's and happily we spotted this cache a little further down. We are glad that we did as it was a fantastic place to visit. This is the first time that we have seen a monument to the Olympic torch and were certainly not expecting one as lavish as this.
Diane can't remember anything of the Olympics as she was born during the Melbourne games but her mother told her stories of how she could see the Olympic athletes from the windows in the Women's Hospital

Once we finished taking the photo's we headed off to gz where of course the cache was found in the last place we looked and to save room in the logs we signed as "The Vics"

Thanks cache me up for the cache

In the area today as I head north and picking up caches along the way and this was one of them. Started at Marlborough Rd and did the loop finishing at St Lawrence and then back to camp at Marlborough. A great adventure!

This was a very nice and totally unexpected piece of history that I wouldn't have seen if it wasn't for caching.

Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache for me and others to enjoy.

On our way home from our TL21 four day caching tour heading back to the Burdekin from Yeppoon. Amazing what is on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. This is so cool and weird at the same time to have an Olympic commemorative display here. Definetly have to get some photos with this iconic symbol, especially in light of the current Olympic cercumstances with Japan and future Brisbane games. TFTC

Loved coming to this location whilst doing the VC trail and knew where we should be looking for the cache & sure enough it was in the first place we looked.

18-Sep-18
We came across your cache, cache me up, on our way with youngoldfella, caching towards this year's QOGM in Barcaldine.

After reading previous logs, yes, there is no cache here now. Log sheet probably blown away too, if today's windy blasts are anything to go by. YOF had a nice silver replacement in his Geo Vehicle, so now there is a cache here for everyone to enjoy.

Log signed and cache replaced at 11:12 AM on September 18, 2018. TFTC.

18-Sep-18
On my way to Barcaldine for QOGM 2018 . Left Nanango at 0225 and this was the next stop of the day. Good quick find. Going to Rockhampton to meet up with RoddyC and Mrs RoddyC some time this afternoon then heading to QOGM 2018 via the coast and across to Clermont. Signed log YOF as that is what I use on small and Micro log sheets/books to save space on the paper as I tend to write on the big side. Apologies for boiler plate logs as I have a lot to write up. TFTC cache me up

We are heading to Barcaldine to attend the event and detoured a couple of hundred kms to do this loop of caches. Varied scenery and hides made it an intersting day. We left Yaamba at 12 noon and got back at 6.30pm. It was a bit of a rush towards the end as we could see we would run out of day light. Thankyou cache me up for placement of this cache and adding to our enjoyment of the area Big GrinBig Grin

Another quick trip to Rocky
Had some time to kill on the way home ...
So decided to take the detour along the old highway
I have been past this monument numerous times ...
and a few times since the cache was placed too Red Face
running late, and running out of daylight
but thought I would stop for just a quick look anyway ...
nah ... getting too dark
will admit that I didn't look too hard either ...
marked as spot to return to another time Big Grin

27-Feb-18
Heading north for a week of sailing and relaxing in the Whitsundays for our 30th anniversary. Of course we had to cache along the way.

On our way home after a fantastic week on "Lazyitis" and some wind, rain and thunderstorms.

Now this IS an interesting spot, which I would never had known about but for caching. The wording on the plaque, "Unique situation" had me googling at a later time. Seems the original route was flooded, so a detour was needed, which added about 40km to the route, but no additional time was given, so the runners were required to run faster to make up the time. They did it.

Cheers

On the drive south along this lonely road,
I stopped here to find a cache Smile
Why is there a cache here ??

Oh !!
Here in the middle of nowhere,
is the most unexpected of memorials to events past Big Grin
Not your average,
boring,
so what !!,
type memorial.

But a significant bit of Aussie history is commemorated here !! [:o]
And didn't they build these memorials to last back then Smile

TFTC,
an easy find Wink

Gotta give this one a fave point !!! [:o]

Between 1999 and 2002 when the Olympics was on i lived at thursday island. They brought the torch to us and I was 1 of the lucky ones who got to hold it and get a photo taken.

04-May-16
when I read the cache description I was wondering which year it was. I find of the kids when they were in school ran in the Olympic torch relay out this way somewhere. Not this year obviouslySurprised Must have been the Sydney Olympics a few years back now. She said the torch was very heavy and hard to carry while running to the next person. I think that had to run about 1km might be wrong though. A lot of training went into it. She brought the torch to a school outreach so we could all get to see and feel it. Very exciting..

Nice place for a cache fav from us Cache Me Up

St. Lawrence.
We stopped at the camp spot here to do the Marlborough Road series & a few others on the way.
This was a great country drive & as we entered the mountainance region the scenery was quiet spectacular.
This is the only monument I have seen dedicated to the 1956 Olympics.
Favourite point given
Thanks for placing this cache cache me up

Back in the area to finish the trail. These caches are a must do for families. Great caches and a great trail.

12-Dec-15
Passed through this way 16 months ago and didn't know there was a cache here. Thought I'd pass by the other 14 odd caches and just stop for this one...............it must have been an isolated trek back in 1956.........well worth the stop to read all about it and have a lunch break as well. TFTC and thanks for bringing me here.

06-Dec-15
An alternate road with a string of caches Smile
Very little traffic and plenty of parking made this a pleasant alternative to the Bruce hwy.
Thought that this monument was much older than it was, thought is was from early 70-ties
Thanks for the cache
