Day 8 of our 2 week road trip south from Brisbane. After overcoming floods, a bogged car and vehicle electrical issues, we finally reached Canberra to spend a few days with relatives and explore some of the newer virtual and earth caches since my last visit. It was then time to continue the journey south towards the Snowy Mountains.

Our destination for today was Tumut but before checking in to our accommodation I made a brief detour to stop for this cache. Took the long way around to my parking spot after ignoring Google Map directions and thinking I new a better way. A one-way street soon put me in my place.

A quick wander down to GZ and a short search later and I had the cache to hand and signed my name in the logbook. TFTC

#5769.
We decided to take an easy stroll to the park from our home that is not too far from this cache. We noticed that it has been disabled, but decided to take a stab at it in any case. The hint made it fairly obvious where to look for the cache and we managed to find it in quick time (whilst dodging all the spiders and their homes). The container contents were a bit damp and some insects found their way inside, but I have definitely seen worse before. Thanks for placing a cache at this wonderful location and for the interesting information in the listing.

18-Jan-21
We haven't yet had a chance to replace this cache, and it's looking like we might not in the near future, so disabling for now.

05-Dec-20
Log book is totally saturated and the co-ords need to be adjusted as they are 18 metres out!

04-Dec-20
Found at 2:21 PM GAFF3 - not that the hint helped any, as a matter of fact it mis-directed us beautifully..
The location looked quite nice, but then the whole experience went to pieces. Followed the GPSr up the bank and then went through knee high grass full of seeds that entered the boots and socks. Got to GZ and - hmm a bare patch of ground with a piece of an old stump. Could that have been where the cache was hidden? Had a look at some logs and - oh no - you have to be kidding - that's 18 metres away! Why hasn't anyone commented on that before! Oh - they have Smile
So down I go and - yep! There is the cache - 18 metres from GZ.
However - wait - there is more! When I opened up the container, there was the usual condition that the caches are found around here - totally saturated and slimy.
Thanks Orion's Hazelnuts for the non adventure [B)]

There was a small group of "us" heading off to meet more of "us" in Tumut for the weekend. Our merry band of misfits was made up of MTrax, Tankengine, Joolay, Aquilus1 and myself. In the car we all thought of a name that we could call our gang, but in the end we decided it was a Canberra Invasion Trip that we were on so just went with CBR5. We signed logs either indiviually or with the group name.

It was an awesome weekend all up, with lots of fun with friends. We cached all day then met up with the rest of the Invasion Team for dinner Saturday night, then cached some more on Sunday until it was time to head home.

**The Cache** Although our coords were showing a little off, the hint sort of alluded to where the cache was hidden. It wasn't long before we had the cih and we off again. Nice little area. Tftc Orion's Hazelnuts!!!

Found with dty73, Aquilus1, Joolay and Mtrax on our Canberra invasion of Tumut and surrounds! (Log signed as CBR5). Of course, we also had a lot of other Canberra cachers in town this weekend, and we all had a dinner on Saturday night at the pub! It was a great weekend, and I think a lot of us "cleaned out Tumut" Smile Nice park, so a favourite from me! Thanks for the cache ozpirate.

Out caching with GLISS as part of the Tumut invasion. We had a great day with mostly finds, only a few DNFs.

A fairly quick find here, even though my phone erroneously told me to climb the cliff which would have been completely wrong! Down we went and Gliss spotted this one. TFTC

It was an early start to the day when I set out with Aquilus1 at 0600 on Sunday morning (04/01/2018) to cache Tumut with a side trip to Gundagai. In all we travelled 520kms and it took almost 16 hours to visit 70 plus caches with 65 finds. A long but very enjoyable day. Some of the highlights of the day included visiting Junction Bridge (a Truss Bridge built in the 1800s), Googarragandra River Suspension Bridge (Built in 2006 and Spanning 51..8 meters), Tumut River Grey-headed Flying Fox Colony, Tumut Rail Station and the Tumut River. We had a little time to also visit the Old Gundagai Jail built in 1859 and the Old Flower Mill built in the 1848. Aquilus1 took a photo of me at the Brungle Centenary Park using my poker to poke the cache out of its hiding spot. We had lunch at Gundagai McDonalds and snacks at Subway. This is a generic log due to the volume of all the caches that we found on the day. Thanks to Aquilus1 for a fantastic day of caching and thanks to all the cache owners for placing the caches.

I am currently writing detailed logs because of a challenge provided by Project-GC. "The Author" Badge challenges geocachers to average one hundred words or more in each log. As of 31st January 2018 my average was only 20 words per log, which seems close to the 100 target. However given that I have found so many GC caches, I have to write many logs with well over 100 words for a long period of time to get my average to the target. Apologies to anyone who finds the logs tedious but it is the only way that I can strive to attain this challenge. After 2350 plus caches (which includes all cache finds up and including today), the average log length is just over 50. I am now entertaining the possibility that I might be able to achieve my gaol before this year ends. Progress has been better than anticipated.

04-Feb-18
It was an early start to the day that saw Darksidedan and myself heading to Tumut for the day with a side trip of some Gundagai caches as well as we travelled through. I had been keen to head off for a caching trip and Tumut looked ideal and definitely didn't disappoint. The scenery as we traveled through the area was everything I had hoped it would be and the clear fast flowing rivers beautiful as they flowed through the middle of it all.

A long but very enjoyable day, so many highlights and although we covered a large area and many caches I'm pleased to know there are many more so a return trip sometime is definitely going to happen.

Yep had a feeling that's where it was and it sure was. Now it is a very good hiding spot and a nice location so nothing against this cache but even I said yuck about having to get it, but get it I did! Thanks for the cache Orion's Hazelnuts.

Logged a few caches around Tumut on a weekend away. TFTC.

Staying in Tumut overnight on our way to the Mega in Victoria we grabbed some dinner then went out to grab some local caches. Took longer to find than expected but after reading the hint we realised we were looking in the wrong area.

Thanks Orion's Hazelnuts for the placement.

This is our fourth trip to the northern island this year. The first three were primarily for family events but with some opportunities to do some caching along the way. The fourth trip is different as caching is our focus. After getting off The Spirit of Tasmania we are heading north to cache at Wangaratta and then Yass before heading into the ACT and Queanbeyan for a week. After that we will travel to Jindabyne for a few days with summiting Mount Kosciuszko being our main target for this part of our trip. Then we will visit Cooma and Tumut before heading back down the track through Wangaratta and Mansfield as we make our way to Alexandra for the MEGA. After the weekend we will continue to make our way south and back onto the Spirit of Tasmania for the “drive” across Bass Strait. We are really looking forward to three weeks of intense caching in great areas and, hopefully, catching up with some geocachers in each of the areas we will visit.

This morning we left Jindabyne after an enjoyable stay and exploration of the area. We travelled along the Snowy Mountains Highway, arriving at Tumut for the night. We took a number of detours off the highway to visit numerous areas, in particular some aspects of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme. Being from Tasmania where hydro electricity is our main form of energy, it was interesting to see the picturesque lakes and the constructions such as the Blowering Dam and the Tumut 3 Power Station. Although the Snowy scheme is much bigger, we noticed many similarities between the Snowy and the Mersey-Forth schemes. We also spent a few hours caching around Tumut. Although the town must have derived great benefit during the construction phase of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, it was pleasing to see how the community had accepted the challenge and diversified once construction of the hydro scheme finished. Tumut now appears to be a thriving community with a strong timber and timber products based.

It took us a few minutes to locate this cache. Our GPS wanted us on the other side of the rock outcrop, but the hint said otherwise. After some hunting in the goat fluff (produced by the poplar trees) we located the cache about 9m south-east of the published coordinates. The cache and contents were in good condition. Thanks Orion's Hazelnuts for the cache.

***** We are currently writing detailed logs because of a challenge provided by Project-GC. "The Author" Badge challenges geocachers to average one hundred words or more in each log. On 1 September 2017 our average was 86 which seems close to the 100 target. However given that we have found so many GC caches, we have to write many logs with well over 100 words for a long period of time to get our average to the target. Apologies to anyone who finds the logs tedious but it is the only way that we can strive to attain this challenge. After 408 caches (which includes all cache finds up and including yesterday), the average log length is just over 96.5. We are now entertaining the possibility that we might be able to achieve our gaol before this trip ends. Progress has been better than anticipated.*****

Weekend around NSW August 2017. After delaying my trip due to rain I headed off on Friday morning. The main part of today was spent heading to Tumut and beyond, all in light rain. After waiting for some teen to head off, I clambered down to the right spot and made a nice find here.

Thanks.

A last minute plan swung into action so StrangeTrousers, mtrax and myself were off to Tumut for a Sunday geomission. We managed to nab a decent number of caches before heading back a little earlier than planned as mtrax was felling quite unwell. It was still an all round enjoyable day and we plan to make a return attack! Big Grin

After checking a few spots at first, I got my troll on and came up with the find. Left a TB while someone has left a "treasure" under here. Watch your step! [xx(][xx(]

A Sunday road trip to Tumut from Canberra, along with Strange trousers and SpecimenX, a brilliant day for caching I had a rough trip over via Wee Jasper, but what caches I did visit I enjoyed, managed a few during the day but plenty more for a return trip.

#3259 22 of 32 today.

Out for a hastily planned trip out to Tumut with mtrax and SpecimenX. Oddly, neither of them have done a lot of caching out there and I had done none, so there were plenty of common caches to find. I really enjoyed the trip out there via Wee Jasper. The winding roads and amazing scenery made for a pleasant journey ... for most of us. I was a bit concerned about the predicted high winds, but they did not eventuate and on the whole it was as good as it gets for a winter's day in the mountains. In the end, we had to cut the trip a little short as mtrax was not feeling too good, but still a good day's haul & plans for a return are already in the pipeline. Thanks to my companions today, it's always great to get out of town and do some exploring with good company.

Found this one, or rather SpecimenX did, while I crammed food on my gob. It was a bit nasty near gz. Troll poo perhaps ?

I was in Tumut after dropping my Brother-In-Law in Batlow. He was riding to Tumut, I was geocaching in and around Tumut!

It was a hot day with a few finds and a few DNFs. Eventually the heat got to me, so I stopped caching and went for a swim in the River.

Cheers

Nice easy find but the day was very ordinary. Rain coming down in monotonous streams and not the warmest of days. Having found the hide, we left the mug to sign the log for us all and rushed back to the vehicle saying it was better for one of us to be soaked than all of us. Thanks for the celestial lesson and for the cache.

Well there you go! We had looked for this one on at least 2 other occasions on separate trips to Tumut in the past with no luck. Maybe it was the GPSr leading us astray elsewhere. Maybe it was some of the local inhabitants. Sometimes it was muggles, or maybe we were just blind.
This time with our eldest grandson in tow we found it straight away. It was well disguised and well hidden.
Another cache in another of the wonderful parks in Tumut. Such a pretty place. Our grandson was impressed with some of the stash as well.

Today was the first full day of our caching adventure with Rapidlywild in Tumut. I have never really been to Tumut before and was quite surprised by the size and the beauty of the place. Lovely water ways that were crystal clear. Just a lovely place to drive around and explore.

Returned back to the town of Tumut after our last cache for a comfort stop and to freshen up again. Decided to head back to this one as we had tried it the night before without much success. A little too dark and dingy for a night time search around. Should have followed the gut feeling it seems. But quick find today and on our way again.

Day ten of our High Country holiday. Another sunny day at Tumut with Bettyboo3747
Got out the deadly treadlies for a relative early morning ride along the river then up to the mountain bike tracks (no one told me they were up the top of the hill!)
We then travelled north and east of town for the odd cache.

Good time of the year to see Orion in the night sky.
Unfortunately, we didn't find one down on the ground today.
I reckon one of those goats has run off with the cache! Smile
