As per the previous log I drove past the Dunedin Railways section at the Dunedin rail yards but couldn't see anything from the road. So I sent an email to them asking if the loco had been moved. And it appears that has been! It has been brought to Dunedin for refurbishment. Great to see that it is to be brought back up to working order but sad that it means the end of this cache. Archiving and I will be passing through Middlemarch soon and will collect the container then.
A little bit of confusion as we looked for the old engine, before realising we had previously calculated the final coordinates, after which the nicely hidden cache was a fairly quick find. However, we still couldn't see any sign of DJ 3021 in the vicinity. In particular, the shed in which it looks to have been in some finders' photos was empty today? TFTC
The previous log by W.E.K.A. is interesting. You can't really miss a locomotive! Which gives rise to the possibility that DJ3021 has been moved out of the shed. If so, its likely destination will be Dunedin Railways compound in Dunedin. I will check there asap. Perhaps the restoration is to start?
Taking the long way home from the Geofest. Through Danseys Pass and down SH 87 to Mosgiel for the night, before my flight home tomorrow morning. What a great drive, some of the scenery was just amazing. I couldn't see the Loco, or was I just going Loco. No problem, I went with where I thought the final might be as per my pre-solve, which turned out to be spot on. Cheers and TFTC
#14722. The TGR train was in the station, so we had to use a bit of extra stealth. Thanks for all of the interesting info in the cache page. TFTC.
Found with StreetWalkerNZ on day 7 of our road trip to the Oamaru Geofest, taking the scenic route, of course. Today we are travelling from Dunedin to Oamaru, via Middlemarch.
Here we are in Middlemarch, I'm pretty sure this is my first time here. A picturesque wee village, smaller than I had envisaged. I wonder what its future would hold without either the Taieri Gorge train (which was in the station when we arrived at GZ) or the cyclists using the rail trail.
I had worked out the final before leaving home so we were able to go straight to GZ. A quick find for SW. Thanks for bringing us here and TFTC.

Out for an afternoon drive along George King Memorial Drive and decided to carry on a bit to grab a couple more. Before I knew it I was nearly in Middlemarch! Oh well since I'm here...why not grab a couple more. Didn't take long to find the required number then back to the car for a bit of maths and off to the final not too far away. Had to wander "around" for a bit but then noticed something I've seen before and BINGO! TFTC
Danger, Danger! What a great find, after what felt like 10 minutes of bumbling around. We all had to sigh when we realised it was a micro, but, this actually helped us out in the end. A good half-way to a good trip. Found with hevic and cj-curry!
If I hadn't been mucking around at GZ, I would probably have found this cache a lot sooner. Alas, I was feeling rather goofy and had much greater interest in jumping and vaulting than finding the cache - but even when I put on my serious face, I missed the cache completely. Hevic got her hand to it, though, to safetykat's astonishment. A fun, sneaky cache for sure. Cheers!
With a bit of research I solved this from home, but with no check sum, could not be sure until I got to GZ. I knew I wanted to find DJ 3021 as I had watched a film at the information centre in Ranfurly about the trains, a history of the railway line and its closure.
The DJ 3021 had been left outside the Ranfurly train station, trapped with the removal of the track. But due to vandalism, it was moved to Middlemarch, sometime before 2006, and now parts have been taken to keep the other trains moving.
So here I am looking around, I plug the numbers into the GPS, and there is the cache. Very cleverly hidden, took a photo, but no spoilers here. Thanks for the hide and the history

It was incredibly hot when we arrived in Middlemarch this afternoon. We inspected the DJ, got the numbers we needed, then went and found the cache. After that we stopped to buy an icecream before continuing our journey. Thanks.
gathered the coordinates before we left home but visited anyway because I didn't want to miss out on seeing the resident. Took me longer than it should have here because I started my search too soon. TFTC #10,060
An interesting little bit of history but it is sad to see it like graveyard. TFTC
Only two days before we leave this beautiful country of New Zealand, so again we cache along our route to complement our site seeing. We also toke the time to walk a bin along an old train track. We had some bull looking at us and they followed us to the end of there field.

We managed to engineer a solution to this one, whilst waiting for the TG express.
This little multi was a nice way to finish off the day after a cycle ride that lead out towards the Rock and pillar Station. The Middlemarch basin was free of snow but the rail trail was very soft and slow going.
I enjoyed the read about the engines.

Found after a clean-up of caches in the area. A great wee multi, with a real history lesson and a clever hide at the end. Thanks UNCLE.
TFTC Thank you for going to the effort of hiding this cache. You have shown us a new place and have helped make geocaching an enjoyable activity.
Today I left Middlemarch with my caravan for Ranfurly but thought I had better get this one for my cache-a-day cache as I might not get an opportunity when I get there.
Cheers for the cache.

Sitting in the shade waiting for a car shuffle to be completed. Assumed from the title this was going to be at the turntable... but no, it's something we haven't seen. And the coordinates are...? Stopped for a cup of tea by the station, saw the DJ and confirmed calculations, wandered over to GZ looking for something plastic as per the description. Hmm. Widened the search and spotted it. A nice way to end a pleasant day out.
Amazing to see the detailed information about trains available on the internet. Goodness, there's even a Youtube video with the provocative subtitle "NZ Rail Action" with intimate views of a well-dressed DJ locomotive https://youtu.be/c-WKUDexMpM

No trouble discovering the coordinates. The cache site was visited en route to the start of the Central Otago Rail Trail. My first attempt to locate the cache yielded nothing but, trusting in the GPSr, the well-hidden container was located on the second run.
We were glad this did not require too much physical or mental exertion as it the temperature had climbed to 33 degrees.
Found on 18/01/2016.
A nice quick grab next to an old friend as we have a holiday house here. The boys have spent a lot of time clambering about the engine and the nearby wagons. Pity not to get the FTF...
