Logs
Found - Mrs McMike2012 & I live full-time in our caravan travelling around NZ, visiting the places we want to visit & doing the things we want to do and fitting in a bit of Geocaching here & there we had been staying in Ashburton but headed out to the DoC Campsite at Peel Forest for a bit of a look around we decided we would go for a bit of a walk & clean up so of the shorter tracks in the area & nab some caches while out & about this was one of them the cache ended up being an easy find, log-book signed & cache returned as found were also pleased to add another 'smiley face' to the tally TFTC ... TN:LN:LS this was #6,505 for us!
No weta's but we did find the cache. Looks like the doors of the weta hides are starting to come off. I suppose 9 years of being exposed to the elements will take its toll.
Really cool cache design! We were looking it the wrong location for a bit, but are glad to of found it. Thank you!
A cracker day to be doing some geocaching at Mt Peel. No problem locating this cache but the door might need some attention. TFTC
Cool cache! It doesn't close properly but the log sheet was still in there and doing okay. Thanks for the cache!
Phone GPS had me some distance away, spotted the cache after I had given up and was walking back to the car; TFTC
Found with NZDi. This morning we walked the Orari River Cycle Track from Burdon Road to the Orari Bridge. We had 18 finds and 8 DNFs, so a mixed bag. This afternoon we are picking off two or three nearby caches, this being the final. We did the Kahikatea Walk yesterday and managed to find the other three caches, but this on proved elusive, as can be seen from the other recent logs today. We had a good look and were about to give up again when I spotted a likely looking pair of boxes on the other side of the fence about 12m away fron indicated GZ on a bearing of approximately 60 degrees. Good to find this one when others today didn't.
It is Easter weekend and it is time to cross off one of the things on our bucket list, which is to visit the Peel Forest area. We headed south from Blenheim on Thursday and overnighted in Rangiora in order to break up the trip. That was an uninspiring place to cache with a miserable strike rate. We then travelled to the Peel Forest DOC camp yesterday and did the Kahikatea Walk and Fern Tracks. Today's mission is to walk the Orari River Cycle Track from Burdon Road to the Orari River Bridge. Tomorrow we will do the track from the bridge to Taylor Road.
Our logs are in full where space allows, but when an abridged version is required we shorten it to KM + ND for Kiwimykl and NZDi.

The Temuka Girl Guides had a weekend camp at the Peel Forest DOC Camp ground. We went on heaps of cool walks around the area! The gps had us all over the show with this one! In the bushes, the other side of the track... but after some good old Girl Guiding ingenuity, it was found - and how amazing this was! It got us talking about the native creatures and how we can look after them. Tftc
Such a cool little weta box! Paper was wet which made it hard to write on but well worth the search
1520. 4:58 pm. Once we realised that we hadn't seen a gate yet when we got to our false GZ we pressed on to find GZ. Cache container's lid was on the ground and plastics bag with the logbook was a few metres away. We did our best to securely reattach the lid but it could use some tools and the CO's touch. Found with eKitten and GRAkiWi. TFT(weta)C.
We took a while to find the correct way to this cache, as the stile mentioned in the cache description has been replaced by a gate. This was mentioned in a log in April last year and it is disappointing the cache owner has not yet updated this. An interesting cache, although it is showing signs of some deterioration. TFTC
Down here to do a difficult cache on my D/T chart & picking up some caches along the way TFTC (Fav)
We are taking our cat Coco on a motorhome and Geocaching holiday. She looks after our home while we go off in Suzy on GC adventures.
Enjoy the walks to these caches. Sadly this one had door off, Mr C went back to car for screwdriver and re attached one screw that was there. The other was missing at top so put in a twig. Such a lovely cache container.
Thanks for this cache and bringing us here George Iles.

We needed the hint to locate this one as our GPS wasn’t cooperating here. Unfortunately the container lid and plastic bag were lying on the ground. We tipped some water out of the bag (log was dry) and put the container back together as well as we could but it could do with a CO maintenance visit in the near future. TFTC George Iles.
Another good find going from cache to cache with woolwood9.SL: tm/ww NZThanks for putting this out for us to visit, we enjoyed the drive / walk around! Was going to do more walking in this area but the rain got heavier!
Cool hide! The GPS was having me on, but we got there eventually. I was not quite sure how to get into the container first! TFTC!!
After reading all the reviews about Geocaching in Peel Forest it was a must stop for a couple of days Quick n easy find - signed log and put back - A nice afternoon on the hunt through the tracks - Thank you - Regards Michael and Michelle (The Flying Brick, NZ) ️
Great to see the Department of Conservation getting involved with Geocaching

24 October 2020 6:06 pm did some quick repairs to this cute cache. TFTC George Iles
Found bag with log in it chucked under a tree and a couple of other bits and pieces scattered around. Log & bag wet so dropped in new log. Cache could do with a check to see if we put back together ok. tftc
Maybe we didn't quite look in the right place but did find a wee box in a broad leaf tree with the door attached but hanging down. Managed to fix it back in place.
Oh the joys of geocaching in the cold and rain just so we can complete a week's streak. Couldn't find near where the coords took us too but some lawyer did manage to find me and I got all caught up. As M was walking away to bring the GPS in again he saw the cache. The door was a bit loose so he returned to the car to get a screwdriver to tighten it up a bit. Great cache near a favourite walk of ours for the last 38 years. Use to come almost daily with our babies.

We were on our summer holiday, just driving around the South Island stopping where ever we end up when the daylight runs out. We have a few caches on our 'really want to find list' and the virtual nearby is on that list, so here we are at Peel Forest. We had stayed the night and had gone to look for another nearby cache (that we did not find on our first attempt), and as we were passing the camp kitchen we spotted another cacher from Nelson. We had a chat during which this cache was discussed, so once we bid farewell to paddlechick we came to look for the caches along this walkway.
A nice easy find here, I must say this is the kind of weta box I like to open. Thanks for placing the cache and thank you for the smiley

No wetas here thankfully, I'm not too keen on creepy crawlies but left a different sort of bug. TFTC George Iles

There's been lots of rain lately so getting to this cache meant getting wet feet, found easily and great to see something a bit different. TFTC!
A quick and easy find aound the Mt Peel area. Thanks
We decided on a quick mini break down Timaru way. The only issue was the camp ground had double booked our room, and we were bedless, So we headed up to Geraldine after finding most of the new Timaru hides. On those we found together, to log was signed Ms+Mr KR.
Thanks to the CO's for placing and maintaining these caches. Cheers.

Nicely crafted cache. None of the local residents taking the opportunity for a stay at the moment. TFTC # 12,588
what and awesome cache design.. of course most people including MRs a would be to scared to open it - remembering the real one she had see at the Auckland Botanical gardens! - did the peel caches on the other side of the road last visit, glad there were still some to do on this side... hopefully more next visit:-)_
really stunned at the bird life in the area, not something we are used in north island forest... or for that matter when i did the route burn., it was quite as while glenochy was noisy?

#15408. I made the mistake of following Toodles over the stile (her Oregon has been a bit temperamental lately). Eventually I backtracked and before long found the well hidden cache. Another nice hide! TFTC.
The forecast for today wasn't great, so StreetWalker and I decided to head to Mt Peel Forest to try and find the last of our unfound alphanumeric puzzles that were solved quite some ago, as well as carry on up the Mesopotamia road to see if we could score a couple of FTFs.
My Oregon took us on a bit of a scenic tour, but once we back tracked and were in the right place, the cache was quickly found. Another nice hide. TFTC.

Our first day in New Zealand we passed in the Peel Forest and we logget this cache. TFTC
After doing the Fern walk, Lt. Caine and I were up for another short walk, so we chose the round trip and a couple more caches
Up on the North Island, we saw quite a few of those boxes but with insects living in them. But to be honest, I prefer boxes with logs over boxes with insects TFTC George Iles!

Great day out caching in the area, lot of neat caches, and interesting spots, needed 43 more caches to hit the 10000 finds mark think I got 62 for the day trip. Many Thanks Bitsprayer.
Last weekend of the School holidays so decided to spend a couple nights in Geraldine. Walked to Rata Falls & had lunch. Boys wet and happy, Mrs TG content. Grabbed a couple caches whilst in the area. Cool cache...was hoping to spot a guardian...but no, only an earwig, and a cache....LOL....
