It was just by luck that we happened to be coming along the river road on a Sunday to walk the Atene Skyline Track, as we didn’t realise that the road was under repair and had long closures operating the other days of the week. We managed to walk the whole track and found it a beautiful trek, but quite tiring with all the undulations. Marvellous views in places. It took us about 7 hours to complete the loop.

Sadly it seems a maintenance visit is due for this cache as we could find no sign of it at all. It hasn’t been found since last February, so it’s probably gone. In answer to your query, we would have come to do this walk regardless of the two DOC caches, but finding them would have added greatly to our enjoyment of the day.

Great day for doing the skyline walk. Good to see DOC caches. Great views, easy find. TFTC

We found this one after a few minutes searching. The coords were a bit off. Unfortunately the content except for the pencil is missing. Only the cover with the DOC sign is still there.

We put in a plastic bag with a sheet of paper together with the pencil, but the cache needs a maintenance soon.

We would have gone here even without the cache, nervertheless thank you for this cache. We appreciate all the work the DOC is doing to create and maintain all these wonderful walk ways and hiking tracks throughout New Zealand. Thanks a lot for this!

We were disapointed when we realised that no one saved our geocaches for this trip and there was no coverage on the hike. Lucky for us, Benji found this one by accident Smile a very pleasant surprise!

Found it completely by accident with AppleNZ - thanks! Smile

We'd been out & about to a couple of events over the weekend, so had intended to catch up on a bit of work on the farm today, but couldn't resist a {FTF} chase on the Atene skyline.
There were 3 other cars in the car park when we arrived so we wondered if we were too late. One couple were getting their mountain bikes ready as we set off ahead of them. Haha - not a mountain bike type track, but I guess they figured that out, as we passed them walking up as we were heading back down.
The other 2 cars were a group of young lads, we passed them heading down as we neared the view point.
The cache was spotted as we neared GZ, ( we do hope it's water proof enough though.), & we were pleased to find a blank log book & some very generous hut passes. Thanks heaps for those - the kids are already after them.
Left a pet rock - a panda

This is our 3rd time up to here, each time it was the draw of a cache that has bought us here.
We love doing bush tracks & picking up a cache or 2 as we go helps us decide which track to do next, so we really appreciate DOC getting involved in geocaching.
