I'm glad the weather was perfectly dry, especially since I was wearing Crocs - infamous for being slippery...I took a few different paths, one up to the top to enjoy the view, before going to the waypoint. Answered the questions, then began making my way to the car. Thanks for showing me these cool rocks! **#4500**
Day #3 Christchurch to Blenheim - The Mega New Zealand ExperienceA chance for an overseas Mega was too good to pass up. Especially with half the state seeming to be attending also. I set about some last minute planning. Flights still available Accommodation found Mode of transport securedLooks like its time to cross the ditch. Ive never visited the South Island before so it is bound to be a fun filled trip. After a whirlwind stop in Christchurch it was already time to leave. Today Im heading north, via some sight seeing and caches of course. An interesting roadside stop here. Answers collected and sent.A big thanks goes to capperz for taking the time to add Frog Rock Earthcache (Canterbury) to the geocaching map for us all to find and enjoy.----------------------------------------------------------Wow! The fun just never stops.Have you logged your will attend for Victoria's first ever Block Party? (Think Mega but even more special!)Join us on 22-23 March 2025 in Sunbury to celebrate 25 years of geocaching by logging your will attend at [**GCAP417**](https://coord.info/GCAP417).
Found with Rayzr. Was glad to be following to avoid the trip hazard. Interesting environment. Tftec
Found with ZEALOG We decided to check out this earthcache today. The GPS coords put us right beside the road, but we decided (well, I decided) the intention was to climb the hill.I had been here before to nab the trad and wondered why I had not seen this earthcache?Anyway....As per usual from an earthcache, I learned a little about the world we live in and this one was no different.I appreciate the time it takes to put together an earthcache so I thank you for that as well.Heads up or better head down on the way up there is a piece of fence on the ground at the perfect height to allow you to get your foot under it and end up with dirt on your hands..... trust me ... I knowA favorite because I think it deserves one.
Was heading through Weka Pass today so stopped nearby so I could complete both this and the nearby trad. Neat views from up the top, thanks for the interesting Earthcache
His looks like something from a cartoon move, great plac. Thanks for the cache./herrFamaxe from Sweden
Enjoyed exploring the area with ObnoxiousSpaceCat, I had no idea there was a tiny railway station here. Frog Rock is one of those landmarks you just enjoy seeing on road trips.
Had a great time exploring the area. According to Gummi_Venus, this is a popular spot to stop off at when coming through the pass. This was the first Id ever heard of it. Thanks for bringing me here. This was a lot of fun and I wouldve never found it otherwise.
Had a great time scrambling around this area. Answers sent to owner. Thanks for giving us reason to stop here and explore.
Stopped here on our way to Hanmer Springs curious to discover the Stoned Frog.
First problem to solve, was finding a save parking for the car. We opted for S 43° 00.040 E 172° 42.800. Is a bit further to walk, but big enough to park with some distance to the Highway track.
Not easy to access the WP1, as the grass and flowers grew nearly man high. First I ended up on top of the observation object, then I descended to the old railway station. From there I could observe the limestone and try to find the answers for the Earthcache.
Thank you for showing us this place

Enjoyed the stop here and a photo of the railway station. Answers sent, hopefully they're correct enough! TFTC
Came down South for a road trip which luckily tied in with the scheduled Weka Pass Railway trip. Saw this amazing rock from both rail and road side. Lots of people waving from the rock as the train went past.

Saved this one for today but did this with Ruru-NZ when she was up here on holiday recently and noted our answers ready for today. A good one to stop for as a break from driving. I remember doing a trad here way back but always good to revisit interesting places.

As in note a few months ago, Kiwicampnut and I called here to collect the info. The day was a success cache wise... But we ended up falling into the gutter and then on top of each other at the last cache of the day, so all thoughts of logging went out the window (or down the drain) as we headed to warm showers and sticking plasters!
Photos revisited tonight, answered decided upon and answers sent off.
Though we'd visited for the trad here some years ago, we didn't take the path to the building, a bit of a climb but not too bad for the one of us with knee issues.
As with all earthcaches, I learned more about the geology of the area around the cache.
Thanks for the cache capperz

Called in today with kiwicampnut on our circuit to collect the last PWGT caches. Taken photos and had a discussion on the possible answers. Will do more research and email answers in the next few days.
Editing to make this a note.

On the way home from a quick caching trip in North Canterbury, had a great time. Answers sent in. Logging with permission. Been meaning to do this cache for quite some time. TFTC!
Driving to Hamner Springs and stopped to get this earth cache. Am curious why a station was placed here if that is what the building was. Tried to spy the seal in the rocks when we were driving but could not locate it.
Thanks for putting this cache together.
Thanks for putting this cache together.
Called here a few days ago and took required photos, and sent the info to the CO now logging with permission.
Bonus - one of the trees passed on the way up to take the photos had a load of perfectly ripe yellow plums, which I paused to collect in my sunhat (the only thing I had with me that could carry stuff), and I enjoyed over the next few days. Don't worry, I left plenty for others! TFTC, what an amazing spot!

A wet day for travelling from Greymouth to Christchurch via the Lewis Pass. After visiting the nearby springs for a virtual cache we stopped at this one. We did not collect the traditional as by the time we got there the rain was falling. TFTC.
SJT_NZ and I had been down in ChCh for the week on family stuff but managed a bit of caching in. We had driven past this cache so many times and time, traffic or weather had prevented us from stopping to tackle it, today we planned on the drip north to final tackle it and a few other around the local area. Answers sent through to CO and enjoyed the wander around the area. Thanks capperz for the cache.
Information sent to CO by Tregearp.
Tregearp and I were passing today and stopped to complete the nearby traditional and this EC. I remember visiting this location as a boy and don't think much has changed - but I probably didn't pay as much attention to the GZ as we did today gathering the required information. Thanks capperz for adding to the motivation to stop and have a look at the geographic features.

#20310. We stopped to find the trad here in 2013; good to have another reason to stop 8+ years later. Didn't take long get the info needed; Troodles will be sending it via email soon. TFTC.
Found with StreetWalkerNZ on a lovely spring day in North Canterbury.
After our walk to the Weka Pass rock art, it was good to find a few drive by caches on our scenic route back to Christchurch.
We have driven past here a few times since this cache was published, so good to have the opportunity to stop and take a closer look at the limestone. After initially taking the wrong path, SW realised his mistake and directed me to the correct location (phew, as I didn't like the route he had taken).
Answers sent. Would be cool to be here when the train goes past. Last cache of the day, time to head for home. TFTC.

"Found" during a trip from Nelson to Chch for a Sport competition. I looked up some nice stops on the way to get out of the car a bit and maybe get some smiles. This was definitely a nice stop and although a bit slippery, we all enjoyed it.
Answers sent and permission to log received. Thanks for another good Earth Cache and I am already looking forward to your next one capperz.

Tftc. Been driving past this rock for the past 35 years and have never stopped. Bit of a mission up and down with Miss 5 and Mister 2 (and the dog)
World-famous in North Canterbury, and always a recognisable feature as we trip through this way. Decided it was time to complete this earthcache today as we passed by. TFTEC

Last stop on the way back form long weekend up at Abel Tasman.
Actually, we have stopped here before, for a trad oldie. But now a well deserved EC for the Frog Rock too.
Answers sent but I'm not sure if I figured out the correct limestone type.
P.S. There are super tasty apples on the tree that's on the way up from the road. Get them while they are there!

We stopped here after an excursion to visit the [Māori Rock Art](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC82N5Q), having been alerted to its existence after the new [Geotour cache](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC92785) was listed. We enjoyed making the measurements, taking readings of the altitude at the bottom and top of the rock. This gorge is really quite amazing. We have driven through a few times, but never stopped before. Thanks for the adventure!
We visited Frog Rock again today to do the earthcache which wasn't there last time we visited in Aug 2011. Earthcaches are always interesting.
Having spent a week or so in Chch visiting son's new house etc we took a day out and went up to Hanmer Springs for a sit in the lovely warm pools. , although there was sleet in the air as we entered the pools! I have been here several times enjoying the spot greatly every time!
It was interesting seeing the Weka pass Rail Stn which i did not know existed and it would be nice to visit again on a day that it is running and experience the journey on the steam train.
We stopped here on our return journey and ascended the 'heights' up to the stn initially and then onto the frog rock to see it close up and to get the required answers for this earth cache. I do like earth caches and i have the platinum award for earth caches put out by the American geological Soc.
I will now sent the answers to the C O
thank you for this earth cache and i will award it a fav Point

Out caching with TharntheHalken today, on the road to Hanmer, and stopped at a spot that I never have. Answers sent to CO. Tftc!
Visiting the South Island as the grown up kids are on Uni holiday. Heading up to Nelson today and collecting some caches en route. Great location which I would have driven straight past if I wasn’t caching. Nice view from the top. A favourite from us.
I've been past Frog Rock several times since this earthcache was published, but for various reasons haven't stopped. So, today was the day. It's really fascinating how different limestone can be, depending on how it was formed. Thanks for the earthcache .
Time to head home after a few nights in hamner..and it's cold..time to knock off some p and g's ...finally making the time to pull over and check out the rock ...
Good to tick this one and the Trad off on my way passed ..

**Found on our February - March tour around the South Island. Logging back home in Auckland in Lockdown isolation**
We spent last night at the Cust Domain. After finding all the Baby Rattle geoart and a few others we started heading for Hanmer Springs. Along the way we stopped at Frog Rock to do this earthcache. We had been here a few years ago to do a trad but it was good to stop for another explore. Climbed up to GZ and took a close look at the rocks. Answers sent to CO. Thanks.

First trip on my very brief NZ visit - heading up to Hanmer springs for a girly-day with my daughter who's in NZ for her gap year. She insisted on climbing to the very top!

We travel up and down this piece of road fairly regularly and each time I have been thinking that we need to go back up and regather the information for this earth cache. I thought we had lost the information as I was sure it was in the phone that was destroyed on another caching trip.
I am logging this during lockdown, (but dating it for a day I know that we drove past) as while cleaning out our office I found a scrap of paper with the notes we made at gz quite some time ago.
The first time we were here to find another cache we stumbled across a dead cat and while we were at gz gathering this information there was a little mouse sitting on a nearby rock sunning itself, it just sat there watching us as we went about our business.
We have permission to log the cache from the CO.
This is an area that brings back happy memories of my childhood, back in the days when the road between Nelson and Christchurch still had areas that were not tar sealed. We used to drive slowly through the Weka Pass spotting as many animals and creatures as we could in the surrounding area. When we were kids we used to think the 'elephant bums' were the funniest. So for bringing back those lovely childhood memories this needs to get a favourite from me.

After a day of MTB orienteering at Hanmer Springs I diverted whilst homeward bound to seek some caches in Hurunui. This was the fifth of 5 caches visited today. Very slippery grass slope up to the waypoint - teach me wear my worn-out trainers and not my tramping boots (that were in the cachemobile) [B)]. Made the required inspection of the limestone and formulated my report to the CO.
Great spot up here. Met some other geocachers too. Worth walking around to the little structure and having a look at the rocks there. Thank you placing this cache. Would never have come up here otherwise.
I have submitted my answers to CO and loved this spot.
It really reminded me of rdr - the locations, the vibe.
Very slippery when I visited but uplifting for the roadtrip weary soul.
Thanks

Traveling south today we stopped by here for this earthcache . We have stopped here before for caches so we knew the spot pretty well. Always look for the frog on our trips south so was nice to do the trek up again . Got all the required info and emailed CO who gave us permission to log TFTC
Stretch0 and I decided to stop off at one of our favourite roadside attractions on our trip south to see if we could get the answers needed for the Earthcache - a job not made any easier by a shower of rain that came through while we were there !! Must have got the right answers as we got a good to go from the CO we did the traditional here in Nov 2010 - enjoy stopping here and now we have learnt new things about the frog Thanks for the cache

I had actually remarked on these rock formations as we drove to Hanmer Springs on Saturday, and wasn't surprised to see an EC here when planning our trip out. So with a long drive across to Franz Josef via Arthurs Pass today, this was made first stop of the day. We parked at the icon, and followed some of the criss cross trails through the grass up to the station, where the rock in question was examined. This is such a cool cutting for the train line as well. Well worth a visit... We then went to find the nearby old trad. Answers sent to CO, and response received in 60 seconds - a record for us.... TFTC

I had never even considered that one might have been able to climb onto frog rock. It is always a popular anticipated landmark for my children during drives. They were very very excited to see tge photos of me standing on top of the famous frog rock. What a view. Definitely scary though
Day 1 of a six day work road trip as far as Wanaka/Queenstown and back. Always good to be paid to go caching (well not paid to cache directly, but when the opportunity arises...!)
Nelson to Ashburton today and this EC together with the old cache nearby made this a must-do stop.
Had a clamber and a good look before sending answers to the CO.

This was a nice place to stop on our drive down to Christchurch. I quite like this earthcache because it is a feature I wouldn't have thought of driving past.
I found this Earth cache with Jude_E back in January. She told me she would send the information to the CO. I noticed she has logged the find and I haven't. I hope it's ok to log it now?
Thanks capperz for placing this geocaches 7099 find for me.Sadly there is no large event in New Zealand in 2019 but there are a few Mega events planned in Australia. I plan on going to the OzGeomuster in July. To find out more visit this site: https://www.ozgeomuster.com.au
If you can't make Aussie. New Zealand will have another large event in 2020 in Auckland.
======== NZ Mega 2020 ========
Planning for the NZ Mega 2020 event is well underway. It will be held in Auckland over Labour Weekend, 23 to 26 October 2020. Thanks for hiding this geocache.

We stopped on our way to Hanmer spring. we didn't notice the frog until we stopped for the cache. We found the traditional and then took some time to reflect on the earth questions. It's always good to bring some geology while geocaching, it picks our brains and turn the moment into a small lesson. We sent answers to CO, hoping we found the type of limestone that is around here. Thanks again for placing this here!
We had already found the traditional cache many years ago but were quite happy to call here again for the earthcache today as we head for the Inland Kaikoura road. Logged with permission.
Saw this beauty from a few diff end aspects ...one from the train ride on the Weka express and a couple of drive Bys It always seems to have different character which makes it so intriguing ...thanks capperz for setting this cache well done
One of a small number located in Hanmer and on our way back to Christchurch today. Wandered up to the waypoint to view the setting and to take some photos. Have sent my answers through to the CO. Not sure that I'll get a pass mark, geology not being my strong point! Anyway it was fun to visit this spot and the imposing Frog Rock railway station! #2348. TFTC.
Passed through here on the way back to Christchurch following an overnight trip to Hanmer. Great area to hike in, and interesting to learn more of the geology of the area. TFTC
Found this cache at my tour to Tasman National Park. It was raining, but the Frog didn't jump

Wanted to visit this cache for a few reasons. I like doing Earthcaches, I needed a F named cache apart from the usual run of caches for a challenge, and I wanted to get my 30th Earthcache for another challenge. Enjoyed wandering around the area, it's always fascinated me, no-one else there, pretty hot today! TFTEC answers sent to CO.
We visited this feature some years ago for a traditional cache, so it was interesting to come back and check out the geology. TFTC
Meanwhile this is my third geocaching-trip to Middle-Earth . And I love it! [:X]
Still there are routes and places in this beautiful country that are on the 'discover-me' list and want to be visited and explored. .
Today (#26) with again splendid, sunny weather took me on the last long road trip during this vacation:
From Nelson down south-east via Lewis Pass to Christchurch.
Allthough travel time was a limiting factor for caching , there were of course quite some nice treasures [^] along the scenic route [^] that deserved a short stop for a visit - just like this just like this scenic earthcache:
What an awesome object [^]! So glad you took me here! [:X]
Thanks to the owner [:X] for placing this earthcache and the lesson learned .
Best regards from Germany!

Found with NZDi on the way home on Day 3 of our short holiday in Hanmer Springs. We have had the two days between Waitangi Day and the weekend booked as leave since the end of last year with no real plan to do anything, but a week ago I checked the bookings for the company holiday home in Hammer Springs and saw it was free today and tomorrow. After a quick word with NZDi, it was booked and I began researching a geocaching trip. In a moment of inspiration I thought about going through the Rainbow Road to give NZDi's new geomobile a real test. Although all the warnings say you need a high ground clearance 4WD and the Sportage is a bit of a soft roader, I still thought it would have the goods to do the job, and it did although I had to use 4WD on one occasion for 50m.
As we didn't know how long caching would hold us up on the trip, we considered bypassing the caches up to six mile stream as we could come back and do them any time. In the end we decided to do them all and we still arrived in Hanmer Springs before we were allowed to check in. So we decided to do some of the caches around town that we intended to do today.
After getting two out of three attempted caches in the west of town, we decided to head for another triple in the south part of town and had the same strike rate, (two finds and a DNF). I hope this is not going to be the story of our Hanmer Springs holiday. Having checked into our accommodation, there was still plenty of time to head out and get some more caches. So we went and did three caches to the east of town. For a change there were no DNF's with those. Then we went to the Hanmer Forest to get a couple of caches before heading off for some dinner. We then went for an after dinner walk up Conical Hill and got a final cache making a total for the day of 35 caches.
Having cached out Hanmer Springs (with the exception of Mt Isobel and one other DNF, our plan was to head into Christchurch to check out some landscaping outlets before heading back home to Blenheim. On the way there were three caches I had targeted to do, the two here and the final to a multi close by.
After getting the nearby traditional and getting a close look at the formation we made our best guesses to answer the logging questions. The CO has been emailed and we are now logging the find. The formation does not look anything like a frog from close up.

Down from Northland, visiting the South Island on a 7 day caching and sight seeing trip. The main object was to find the last four CANZ caches, finish off my D/T grid, fill as many spaces as possible in my Jasmer grid and then concentrate on special types, solved puzzles, completed challenges and those with good numbers of favourite points, plus maybe a few extras that were close to any of our stopping points.
The trip started off on a good note, with our rental cache mobile being little more than a week old and only 109 kms on the clock. It certainly had a few more by the time we returned it..!
Day two today and heading northward. Made a detour off into Weka Pass for the two caches here, especially this EC. A very interesting rock formation that does indeed look like a frog. Thx for setting up this earthcache and bringing me somewhere I may otherwise never have visited. Answers have been sent to CO. TFTC

Enjoyed our trip to the rock and thinking about the answers. Message sent Thanks capperz for the effort.
We were lucky enough to see this rock formation 3 times in about as many weeks as we travelled around the South Island. On this day we travelled on the Weka Pass railway as part of a privately chartered trip. Its great to learn about the areas that we travel in and about how they were formed. Thanks for setting up this Earth Cache capperz.
I was in the area for a FTF and on the way back into town. I stopped by and made my observations. My GPSr was a bit wonky so I hope I was in the right spot (right by the 'station'). I love it around here. It's good fun. We've done the Weka Pass railway train ride a few times now. Answers sent to CO. Always nice to tick off an EC.
Thanks for the cache capperz.

An earthcache and a decent location to stop off and explore. I noted my observations for the questions and then wandered about snapping some photos. My answers are on their way to the CO. Thanks capperz.
Placeholder until I get all of the information needed sent through to the CO. A fascinating place found on a weekend's caching foray with Ethness.
Day 1 of geo trip with Nosynel. Have sent answers to CO and hope they are correct. Could have done with geologist son's input! Thanks for the earthcache, cappers.
I visited Frog Rock in January on a road trip with Infoferret. I like driving in this area and seeing the different geological formations; so different to Wellington’s. I couldn’t get over how many cars sped past, seemingly their drivers were uninterested in the view.

Revisiting the rock on the way home to inspect it in more detail. Thanks for making us notice, very interesting on closer inspection! TFTC!!
Late logging. Was in this area heading back to CHCH for Christmas after 4 days at St Arnuld. Been her before and did the climb to the top and many photos later... While there a train went past. This time only time for a good look.

This is such a pretty area- we have walked to the cave paintings and the top of Frog Rock on earlier trips. Ooh, stop, now there's an earthcache there! Had to pull off between road cones. Easy stroll up past an apple tree to the sadly neglected old station. We did enjoy this stop! Logging with permission.
#6252. I was at Frog Rock last Sunday but only had a chance today to read the cache description in detail. Luckily I took some notes while at GZ. Fascinating place to visit. I had the done the traditional cache here in the past. But interesting to take more notice of the geological features this time. Have sent information requested to CO. Logged with permission. Thanks for setting up the earthcache capperz.
Found easy. One rock just to big to put in the boot of the car.Demainiac and myself waited but train never came.We know why.
Answers to the questions were provided from our family trip over the school holidays and I headed up again to try and track down a multi nearby unsuccesfully due to road works. This is a cool feature that I remember from my childhood road trips. My parents used to know other features through here as well. The only other one I can remember was the three elephant behinds which got damaged in the Kaikoura EQ. Great idea for an earthcache.
The last cache and a convenient leg stretch for the kids and I on the way back from Nelson. A bit of an inspection of the railway station then explaining the railway to the kids then to the rock for the answers. And a read of the various writing around the place. Then up to the top - careful sprogs - and a wave at Mum in the car below and back off we go. Cheers
Logging with the CO's permission. We have very few caches left to find on the Lewis Pass route to Christchurch and those left were too long a walk for us today. Except for this new earthcache. We parked and walked and examined and recorded.
Thanks.
Thanks.
After finding the nearby Trad, I took the time to do this Earthcache, Tasks completed it was time to head down again and head to Waikari to grab a coffee. My first time to Weka Pass as well. Logged with Permission. Cheers and TFTC
Info with Karma Reprint. Came thru some snow on top of the Lewis Pass so it was a pleasure to have a walk in the sun here. TFTC
Last stop for the day. Have wandered around this area for a previous find, but have not been near to the station.
Thanks for setting up the cache.
Thanks for setting up the cache.
A beautiful Winter's day and another climb to a place we had been before. needed to take a photo to prove we had been there, and tried to take one away from GZ, so as not to give things away. Thanks for the cache we love these.
Thank you for setting up this cache. I have stopped here many times and by steam train also. I climbed to the top when I found the trad cache here. It’s a great landmark and also love spotting other shapes in the area. TFTC
Visited this interesting place with Aslan on the way back from Hanmer with friends. I haven’t walk to the top so took Aslan word that the view was great. Thank for the cache
On the way home from Hanmer this new cache required a stop. This is an impressive area and we really like the Weka pass stone formations. Unfortunately some are on private land and you can only see them from the road. Thanks for placing the Earthcache and information about different types of limestone.
Logging answers sent to CO.
Found this on a drive back to Nelson from Christchurch with Mrs Biggles.
Cool spot for an earthcache. A good spot to stop and explore. I think I found all the information I needed for this one although I think I was overthinking the guesstimate of the rock height... TFTEC, Biggles.

A little behind in the logging, but was on a caching adventure with a group of Westies: rebel98, rustynz and gorby.
Answers have been sent previously by the group (rustynz), thanks for creating the Earthcache
Thanks for the hides, another caching adventure

Rustynz, Rebel98 and myself Gorby are Westies from Auckland. We regularly head away on cheap flights to here and there, this time we have flown to Christchurch for another 3 day adventure of fun and caching.
After an event held by rusty today in ChCh, we have generally headed north to eventually impose ourselves upon Hanmer Springs and a well earned soak in the hot pools. But before we get there, there is work to do.... this neat earth cache! It's dusk and so I took my headtorch up with me, nice to see that we will be 3rd to find it, that doesn't happen very often. Loved the walk up the hill to see the station, well worth the effort, take in the info of the limestone and come up with some good answers.
Thank you for the E.C and bringing us here to this cool location!
