Ah, the old blechnum polyvinylclorium! I've searched for this in the past without any luck. I had an idea of what I was looking for but didn't really pay any attention to the hint. Today I was more successful - but not straight away. In the end I decided expanding beyond where my GPSr was pointing was going to be the answer. I headed up what looked like a vague geotrail - and 'clunk' - I stood on it! (No damage done). All good here and the stop was long enough for me to get feeling back in my fingers, but not my feet (it's early on the day of the hardest frost so far this winter). TFTC.

What a hoot! Took a bit to find and was in the wrong spot. Almost decided to head on and have another try on the way back. How to get back down?! Walked along a wee way to a safer decent when my eye spotted this fine specimen! Love it! Made me smile

#11,812. I decided today was a good opportunity during Labour weekend to pick off a few of the back country caches at the head of the Remutaka cycle trail. But the plan was to access them by walking in via Collies Track out on the Remutaka Hill Road. Bit of a hike to get here in my gumboots. I got as far as the Siberia tunnel swingbridge and then came back through the summit tunnel on my walk back to the highway with a 30,000 steps round trip.

This type of cache hide ticks all the boxes for me. I enjoy my botany lessons so the species name made immediate sense to me. I knew exactly what I was looking for as its quite a rare plant out in these parts. The glossy foliage really does stand out and its an exquisite example clearly growing well in the moist litter of the Remutaka Hills. So I soon had the nicely placed cache in hand taking care not to damage the fronds of the rare fern. Signed the logsheet and replaced everything as found. Thanks Jodanz for pointing out this rare example of a naturalised fern and hiding the cache near it. One trackable rescued. Favourite awarded.

Very clever and amusing!Nice to find this on my bike ride, a lovely day for it.

Turn around point for me - came from the Wairarapa end and allowed myself three hours walking. This was where I got to - will need to try to complete those further on from the other end one day. Thanks.

The kids loved this one. Got them quite interested in how it got here. Good ride out too. Tftc

Unfortunately no luck for me here despite a pretty good search

A repeat of the corrected coordinates: S 41° 07.365 E 175° 11.732 and note it is only about 1.5m into the bush.

Wow, this cycle trail quility has improved considerably from when I cycled it maybe 10 years ago. I must come back for another trip. Twig and I made some vague plans to do it. One day. Sometime. Anyway, Although this cache is in the wrog direction, it's only a short ditance away, so we detoured this direction anyway.

I know what a blechnum is generally, but not specifically, so wandered all over looking in likely spots amongst the generally blechnums. And then I saw the cache title! Ahh! Changed my search modus slightly and soon found the cache.

Awesome. Why is the favourite score so low? Doing my bit to fix that. Added a path tag and a trackable. A kind of hide I have always wanted to do, Jodanz you did an excellent job here.
Annoyed Twig slightly. Once it is found it stands out really obvious, yet he walked past it twice!

Twig and I needed some tree time so we decided to come here. Over Collie's very overgrown Road to the Rimutaka rail trail and back via the appropriately named Back Road.

Log signed as TATS - TwigNZ and the Seagnoid.

I was due to spend the weekend in Wellington, and had some time available for some caching today so hatched a plan to meet up with the Seagnoid for some tramping time. He suggested following Collie's Track and going from there, which was fine as it's all virgin territory to me.
Over the course of the next 12 - 15km (estimated) we had to contend with everything from gnarly hills, very overgrown tracks (roads?) right through to the easy gradients and relatively smooth gravel of the Remutaka Rail Trail.
But it was nice to see the sun and to feel the warmth after so much rain and icy southerly blasts over the last few weeks.

I had never set foot on the Rail Trail before, and was very impressed with the form of the track. Definitely worth blowing the cobwebs off my bike and returning here in the not too distant future. This is exactly the sort of cache I normally don't like. Flora is really not my thing, and scrambling around looking for a particular example was not something I really wanted to do. As it turns out, I paid far too much heed to the Hint, which meant that I wasn't paying attention when I literally walked past the cache twice to get to the hinted distance in to conduct my search. Hint to future searchers, it's not as far from the path as suggested.

So I was both pleased that the Seagnoid made the find, and annoyed with myself that I hadn't spotted it myself, as it really does stand out after the fact. The logsheet was signed as T.A.T.S (TwigNZ and the Seagnoid) before replacing it all back as found.

A cache well done, and deserving of a FP. Thanks for the smiley Smile

I loved the name of this cache when I first saw it, but although I used to often travel up and down the Remutaka Rail Trail on cache finding or cache maintenance expeditions, that hasn't occurred much since this cache was set in place. However, today I was heading past on my bike to retrieve one of mine that I was archiving and I thought I'd finally get to stop and have a look for it on the way back.

It was a hot day, but at least cycling meant wind chill to keep things pleasant and searching for the cache was in the shade. I wish I'd read all the past log entries to get the revised co-ordinates, because at no point did I ever get the Garmin to say I was within less than 8m of the cache. That meant quite a lot of going backwards and forwards wondering where to look. I finally resorted to looking at the hint, because I had been unable to see anything of the nature I was looking for: surely it wouldn't be THAT well camo'd, would it? After spending a minute or so in one spot, estimating distances from track and edge of bush, I happened to glance down and discovered I was actually standing on the cache! I think I must have walked over it while I was reading the hint on the GPS. Anyway, what I saw was exactly what I had been expecting to see. I liked the part that had been constructed to hide the waterproof container. Didn't take long to open everything up and sign the log. I then put it all back together with the bit I'd trodden on straightened up again (sorry about that) and the natural cover back in place. Then it was back to the bike for the ride home.

Incidentally, we grow a few different and much more common species of Blechnum in our garden. I must admit to not having come across this one before, either in the wild or in a garden centre. I think I'll give this one of my jealously guarded small store of FPs (I don't find many caches these days, so don't earn many FPs, and I'd already awarded 2 others earlier in the day) for both the amusement factor and construction effort. Thanks for another cache with a difference Jodanz.

Put in a reasonable effort here but without success.

OK, this one beat me. Really couldn't figure out what I was looking for, gave up after taking a tumble with my foot caught in an errant vine. Oh well...

Neat hides all the way along this trail. TFTC

Out on a ride on a beautiful Saturday afternoon with DaVinciHunter. Another stellar cache hide. TFTC.

Followed the satnav & geotrail and spent a long fruitless search — despite having pretty good idea of hide from clues. My 3rd search area yielded an instant result. Very cool! The last of 4 caches which have sprung up since my last visit — nice to have an excuse to revisit this area. Cheers Jodanz!

I had the day off work today, so decided to go for a little bike ride... by this point, I was well needing a rest, so I decided to check out some reports of recently discovered flora... TFTC

Found on a cycle ride up to the Summit for lunch on a mild but windy day. Really ppreciate the Tree and Plant series of caches. This one my GPS seemed to be well out but with a bit of a wander two of this rare species were spotted. TFTC

That took me too long because my instrument had me looking in a likely area about 10m away from GZ Widened the search and quickly spotted the amusing oddity Well done Jodanz The drought has broken and some serious rain is all around now

16-Feb-19
Without realising it, I had strolled past this cache site on my outward journey a few hours earlier. This turned out to be a good thing as it provided an excuse to have a break on the way back. I initially went to an area which seemed feasible but I saw nothing of interest. A check of the earlier logs had me using some alternative coordinates which took me to a similar looking area very close by; this time I did spot something of interest (certainly something I was not expecting). Thanks, Jodanz, for another great cache to end an enjoyable day's caching.

I stopped here on the way to Summit and had a bit of poke around but couldn't see anything. So I left it for the return journey when I hoped I would be more enthusiastic about a detailed search. While at Summit I was reading some logs and noticed Huhugrub offered some different coords. So when I arrived again using those the GPS took me straight to the cache for an immediate find as it was a little more conspicuous than I was anticipating! So where's the actual cache? A little bit of pawing answered that question and the log was soon signed. Worthy of a favourite point. Great title also which I have only just successfully parsed now the brain is not competing with the legs for oxygen. TFTC.

With things at WENZ Headquarters than it was yesterday I was given a leave pass for a few hours. So I headed up to the Rail Trail to give my new Stumpy ST 29r it’s first off road trial. Rode up to Summit Yards with one stop to chat to rattll and watcache who I bumped into along the way. Pleasing to see some others enjoying this excellent trail, the excellent caching, and today's excellent weather.

Got off my bike and soon spotted what I was looking for. Nicely done, put a smile on the dial.

Oh and the mtb, passed with flying colours. Cheers and TFTC

Well its Mega time again and its held in Wellington so there has been lots of planning envolved with puzzles been solved and trails to do this trail along the habour betrween Wellington and Petone was planned to be done after the festivities of the Mega but there was to be a slight hick up at the start of Friday morning before we set off for Wellington and that was a truck accident with a chemical spill blocking the road restricting movement along state highway one in the road not likely to be open until 8pm that night. so after watching the NZTA website up until 3pm a plan was hatched to divert to Wellington over the Piatua track and down the Wairapa to our desination right at ground zero so there we stayed for three nights, after entering into the Waves to Waitrapa and trying to get 10 lab caches and 11 differnt cache types in a day on the saturday.
The next morning turned out to be another beauty so after breakfast we loaded the bikes onto the car and off to the start soon we were heading to the start of the trail where we un[oaded the bikes and adjusted one of them to suit mr rattl, then we were off and it was not long before we reached this one but this took us not too long before we almost stumbled over this one as we were particuly careful where we were walking, and has the description says I/we had not seen a fern like this one before thanks for the placement and the smiley.
Fp awarded.

This is a well hidden cache which had us searching around for quite some time, until we eventually stumbled across it.
Thanks for putting such a challenging hide here to keep us on our toes.

Called here on a bike ride up the trail this morning to do some maintenance on one of my own caches. The GPSr was originally pointing me to the wrong side of the road but that didn't make sense, and fortunately it soon settled a bit closer to where the cache was. I very rapidly spotted the odd man out, and had the cache in my hand half a minute later. Signed log, thanks for the nicely constructed cache. Worth a favourite point Smile

Today I thought that seeing it was going to be a nice day I would head out to the Rimutaka Rail Trail and try my luck with my new e-Bike.

I finally found something that didn't quite look right.

Cheers for the cache.

#10,340. Joint {FTF} with Jippy1 and wb1116 at 07:44. An early morning ride in Rimutaka Hill in Upper Hutt. Did not see a lot of people going up, but came across a number of other cyclists, walkers and runners on the return journey. GZ itself was all quiet when we were there. We searched around where the GPS was leading us, but had no luck. Eventually we fanned out to search wider, and Jippy1 made the find some 14 metres away. Well hidden. The cache was in excellent condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

We parted company afterwards … and Jippy1 and wb1116 continued their ride up the trail on a maintenance run.

Thanks for the placement, and for bringing us to this site, and …
