This marker is in the Lake Metroparks Lakefront Lodge park in Willowick and is near the intersection of Lakeshore Boulevard and East 305th Street. On June 17th 1850, the steamer G.P. Griffith caught fire and burned offshore from that point, causing the deaths of 286 immigrants who were travelling from Buffalo to Toledo. Many drowned due to the added weight of the money and valuables that they had sewn into their clothing for transport. The Griffith incident remains one of the worst maritime disasters ever on the Great Lakes. This is Ohio marker 9-43.

Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad #32-48
My Hometown, Sylvania, Ohio
on Monroe St, across from the Fire Station.
This commemorates the original route of the Erie and Kalamazoo railroad , the first to operate west of the Alegheny Mountains. The initial run was on October 3rd, 1836 and ran from Toledo to Adrian.
I had to place this one because it holds a special place in my heart. When I was a youngster playing little league Baseball at Memorial Field, see GCNHQF, Glory Days, I once hit a homerun that landed in an open boxcar on a moving train on these very tracks. That homer traveled from Sylvania to Adrian, MI, about 25 miles!! Let's see Barry Bonds do THAT! LOL We also used to jump this train as youngsters and ride from one end of town to another. THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED KIDS,IT IS VERY DANGEROUS AND THE TRAIN GOES MUCH FASTER NOW.
I hope this has not been logged all ready, I did not have time to scan through them all. Let me know if it has been and I will delete it.
Thanks GD for another very interesting cache.
Sorry, I do not have a camera to take a picture.

The Weston House (Sandstone Houses) N. 41-26.705 W. 081-55.895 The marker # is 83-18 in Westlake Ohio.
This rare sandstone house was built for Austin (c. 1788-1848) and Roxanna (Sears) Lilly (c. 1793-1868). They came to Dover Township (Now Westlake) in 1832 from Ashfield, Massachusetts, an area from which many Dover Settlers originated. It is made with sandstone blocks 2 feet thick. Sandstone was rarely used to build houses because of the immense labor to extract, transport, and assemble massive stone blocks into a residence.
This area has immense deposits of sandstone, used for the Canadian Parliament Buildings, public buildings in Toronto, plus sidewalks, curbs, and buildings throughout Ohio.
