Family trip for Nanna's 80th... We traveled from Perth, Rotorua and Paris the young and young at heart hikes up to light house for a bit of sightseeing. T.f.t.f
We would have found this a lot quicker if we had read the description! Lovely walk out to the lighthouse. TFTC
2170. I kept darting all around looking for a spot that resembled the hint until I spotted the unusual tree and leaf litter. TFT(island)C.
Auf unserer Reise in den Norden hier gehalten und den Cache gesucht und gefunden. Danke frs Verstecken.
I'm back up in my home town of Whangarei for the weekend, visiting family. After spending some time caching around Whangarei Falls, I then headed out to Tutukaka for some more caching. I enjoyed the walk out to the lighthouse and on approaching GZ here, I was greeted by the sorry sight of this once impressive tree, no longer in its prime... even though it's not a native, it is still sad to see. I noticed other specimens on my walk that all seem to have suffered the same fate... I don't know if it's poisoning or some kind of disease? Anyway, the cache was a nice quick find at GZ. TFTC!
That's totally not a native
Lovely walk out to the lighthouse, but very muddy at the moment. Stopped for this on our way back down the hill as too many others squelching past on our way up. GPS very accurate on the way down but not so on the way up, the effects of tree cover I guess.
Fun cache, thank you.

Today we used the wonderful weather to walk to the lighthouse. The trail is beautiful and offers great views over the Tutukaka coast. On our way to the lighthouse we came along this cache aswell and were able to find it after a short search. Thanks very much!
It was a slippery slope today but we made it back in time before the tide came in. Nice view from the other side too! Thank you for placing and maintaining caches. FP for nice location!
Tough going at this stage, not too hot but i don't do humidity well. Definitely no tree i recognise. Must have been power to the lighthouse at some time. HNB
Now I was really intrigued when reading about this smooth trunk. It totally didn't disappoint, You get that feeling it is going to be obviously not native. Maybe it has served its useful purpose in its lifetime, but together with the real natives provides much needed shade.
Thanks CO for new placement.
Thanks CO for new placement.
First day of my Christmas/New Year holiday so as something to do on a fine afternoon we decided to go for a short hike out to the Tutukaka lighthouse as this is something that has been on my "to do" list for awhile. The fact that a local cacher had recently placed several new caches on the track was also a prompting factor.
So the two halves of SmithsNZ along with Debz6, my son and his couple of friends set out from the car park at the end of the private road. Due to it being low tide we walked directly to the lighthouse with the aim to start our cache hunting there and on the return journey.
After taking many photos and enjoying the 360 degree view at the lighthouse we headed on our return journey with the aim of locating the caches along the track. This first cache as we headed back to the beach was a quick find once we had located the rare Cementus Brokesii tree which is not often seen in a location such as this being more at home in an urban environment.

This was an amazing walk with stunning views. The way to the top was muddy and slippery, but definitely worth it. TFTC!
Didn't expect to be STF, nice surprise!

[FTF] 14:05. Noted a few new caches out this way - didn't really feel like jumping to be FTF first thing in the morning. Decided would wait til the arvo and head out. On the way out I noted the cache near the lighthouse was still unclaimed - more than likely as the tide was not right. Decided to go and give this one a go first. The tide was just right to make a pass - all be it having to jump in a few placed to avoid getting wet. Got to GZ and quickly spied the hint. I'd say this is of the Portland family of trees, its about the right texture. Opened the cache to find it still blank... well I didn't actually expect it to be blank, bonus. Signed and replaced. TFTC
