I visited this cache site with the intention of creating a new cache nearby. On the off chance I also checked out your old cache site and found the remains of the cache - water soaked log book and a couple of plastic bags - still there. I've collected these and placed them into my new cache which is about 200m away and hopefully safe from vandalising muggles. Sadly the marker post has been badly vandalised and the information board is missing.
I've given you 1 1/2 months in which to maintain this cache from the time of my reviewer note advising that you have 1 month in which to fix it.
This cache has therefore been archived due to a lack of owner maintenance.

What a great spot for a cache. As now reportred we found it seriously muggled. The log book was lying on the ground in a couple of pieces and a couple of plastic bags round about. We patched together what we could and recorded our visit. Its a pity some of these isolated caches dont get a bit of respect. The drive over the Maungatapu is always interesting and the walk south along the ridge from the top to Dew Lakes is worth doing. There is camping near the Dew Lakes. Enjoy Murrayroma and Soggyboots

Think this one might not be such a good one for the new cache-mobile. Will try and get up this way soon, with the bikes and a new cache box.

Heading to Nelson - a short cut I was told, but not really. From Blenheim side, track good, Nelson side getting rutted and overgrown - the paintwork on the 4WD suffered!! An interesting spot. TFTC. TNLN.
found on way home from ChCh. as i live in Brook its quite a short cut? from Pelorus to home. The short cut uses a lot more diesel and a lot more time. Great to do this after End of the line for Princess Moonlight, as the history lesson is complete. Had an eerie moment filling out log as a large container of old coins mainly NZ from correct time period somehow fell out of car and scattered all over the track. Thanks for the cache. This is a pretty easy 4 wheel drive track, though I nearly rolled due to taking it too easy.

A nice trip up from the Maitai this evening. It is always niced to have a cache at a historical site so we can combine a bit of fun and education for the kids.
Cheers.
Cheers.
Maitai MTB Mission Mk2. Done this track a few times now, its getting a lot rougher. From the Blenheim side you could do it in a Forester but definitely not the Nelson side, some big ruts. High clearance 4x4 only at the moment I think. Good easy find, GPS was a bit off but found it real quick anyway. -Smile +ArmyMan
Enjoyed the trek to this cache - hubby Stretch0 has been keen to do this track since we got our 4 wheel drive !! Shame it started to hose down when at the cache site but the cache was safe and dry took nothing left toy solider An interesting site with an interesting history - thanks for the cache
As I drive from Blenheim to Nelson on a daily basis I have known about this road to Nelson and have wanted to drive this road. It came even more exciting when my wife and I found that there was a tie to the family tree with the murders that this cache is all about. The connection was through Mr Kempthorne ,one of the victims.
We drove from the Blenheim side to the site with my wife and found the cache easily is in a nice dry state. Had to make a quick return as the rain started to pour so was not game to continue to Nelson.

Managed to get to it this time. Tried before with jf2004 but river was too deep to cross. Back to its normal trickle now. Good 4x4 trip but track is getting rough.

Doing round trip caching today. Used to bring microwave dishes up this, way for the tower in the saddle, on a trailer. An easier drive today. TFTC - man + seaweed
Went over the track with some friends who have just got a 4X4 nice trip but we missed the first cache and only got this one still I'm sure I will be back.
what a grate track might go this way to nelson more oftern

Just passing through on the KTM to show a mate the Maungatapu Track. Had to look at the ford after jf2004/tatts comments. I'd been through during the week prior and it was only 25cm deep at worst. Same again today.
Some water in the container but not in the log book bag. Needs drying out.

Tatts is correct, we were geocaching, and came all this way, to be stopped about 50m short of the cache! I thought about crossing by foot, but the creek was well up and flowing fast! Got the King Kong cache though We'll be back in summer!
Good site for this cache and a pleasant excuse to take this route to Nelson. Left Geocoin.
Weather was lousy and the creak just beyond the site was very high. Normally this is just a few inches deep but not today! There was another 4WD on the other side (I suspect they, too, were Geocaching)and, after a quick conversation and confering with the crew, we decided not to cross but to return to Pelorus and onto Nelson via tarseal. Found out on arrival that a tramper had been swept down the Pelorus river the very day.

Easy find ( it was sitting out in the open ) Seems the gorse cutter dislodged it from hiding hole and didnt know where to return it to. At least he signed the log and left it there. Re hid cache. TNLN
Quite easily found after a hairy trip up from Nelson. The track was wet and slippery but well worth the effort.
Easily done from the Peloris side after turning back from the other side a couple of days ago (see my "King Kong" cache) TNLNSL.
great drive up the track. easy find but needed to find a stick to get past the gorse bush
Decided to use my monday cycling from Polaris to Nelson via this route. Must tell Captain_s that company bikes can go anywhere. I am sure he did not take the company car on the Nelson side! TNLN
Another group find! Been past this quite a few times; last time with integersmirk we had a hunt around...this time we checked the description before we left home. Cheers TNLN.
i love this track my truck knows it off by hart my girlfriend was pissed when i took the long way home to get this cache but it was worth it great location
Had our son home with his 4WD so took the chance to do the drive from Maitai.
If Captain S took the company car from the Nelson end then he's a bad boy!
The log book was full so we added a new one, and then continued on to Pelorus.
+buzzy bee - insulation tape.

Bloody amazing just where you can get a company car to go these days!
Was a bit silly doing it after the rain and mid week on my own, but hey, I was up for a long walk home if necessary!
As it turns out the old girl took it in her stride and delivered me to the cache site intact.
Easy find with good co-ords.
Cache was open and very wet, so sat it in the car by the heater for a while to dry it out. Needs a new logbook though. TNLN Cheers for the cache!

Found after a neat drive in from the Nelson side with some 4WD mates. Found the cache after a small search amongst the gorse. The log book is virtually full. The insides of the cache were a little damp but we dried it out using the heater in the car.

Found this one after a lot of scrambling round. Well hidden. Round trip walking with mate Mo from the dam to the Dun Mountain cache, on to this cache and back to the dam via the Maungatapu track. Great walk, great day.
Finally got to this cache - by 4WD this time. Had walked up to the saddle from the dam before but this point was just a bit too far on foot to do in 1 day. Had fun bringing the family over from the dam. Track was pretty good - just a bit rutted in places. Obviously this route has been used for a long time...

This was our second to last 4x4 trip for the South Island as is our last day here, and what a way to end it. The views are so spectacular around here.
We have soared amongst the eagles during our trip and this was an awesome way to end it.
- Crab
+ Tape (Bullseye)
Cheers for the sensational views

4WD’d in, at 11.40 am, from Pelorus Bridge. The original plan was to continue on past this cache and also visit the Dammit cache on the way into Nelson. The Maungatapu Track was very muddy and slippery and we managed to get past the point at which one recent 4WD had baulked on it’s attempt on the track. Mid winter is probably not the best time to visit this cache, particularly mid week with just one vehicle (a weekend trip would see many other 4WD’s doing this popular track). After reaching the cache safety dictated that we abandon the attempt to travel on to Dammit. + large glo in the dark smiley (ex Shakespeare Bay), - Donkey card game. Must come back and do the track in the summer.
Well what can I say - our humble Bluebird is taking us to so many places that we would never have imagined. We drove in from Pelorous Bridge end after reading the comments of other cachers. It was a long way in but we made it. We met a tourist making the trip on his mountain bike. This was a great cache and we thoroughly enjoyed the outing!
Took the hose coupling and left a crab that we had picked up at Shakespeare Bay.
Thanks Swanny & Wazza.

Last time I went over the Maungatapu saddle was on Mountain bike!! the road is in good condition and it was a damn site easier in Tony's 4wd.
A very hot day. I found the co-ordinates to be pretty good, the clue is really good if you get stuck (not needed today).
A car would easily get up from the Pelorus river side but would have to exit the same way. The Maitai side of the hill is rough and steep in places.
No trade made, just logged in. We expected to be the first to find this one- congrats Kiwilegend
Thanks Swanny for a cool cache.

Had a good trip over with Steve from the Nelson side in the 4WD. Took smiley ball (it's pretty cool) & left a boring tap connector. Thanks.

Wow! Great road! Turnoff is before locked gate at Maitai, so no problem with timing. Took about 1 hr each way to/from Nelson.
Hint: don't stop at the creek, heading from Nelson. Pretty scratchy reception, but the hint is spot-on. Gorse is a bit of a problem. Took the Meowth Bouncy-ball, left a pack of Donkey cards.
Is that Meowth ball the same one we left at the cabbage tree cache?
