Been here before I think but memory is non-existent. Spotted a new fire from the spotting tower. Took a bearing & phoned it in. Ended up with 4-5 trucks on it to quell it with the warm windy conditions. TFTC

I found this cache as I was heading back home to Adelaide after the Capital Geobash Mega event over Easter.I was travelling solo again and took somewhat of a zig-zag route, following caches of interest. My main focus was on the non-Traditional cache types, although I did find a few others opportunistically. After a bit of rain the first day after leaving Canberra, its been great weather the rest of the time.I hadnt intended to travel home via this cache, but I got sidetracked by a T5 FTF opportunity in the Murray-Sunset National Park and grabbed this older one on the way.The cache and contents were in good condition. Thanks reverb for the cache.

I had a few days leave so Mrs JTreeTrack2 and I decided to pack up the car and head off to where it is slightly warmer (than Ballarat). So North to the Murray River, Swan Hill and Mildura then home through the Wimmera. What is a trip without some caching, so some caching we did, not heaps but enough to leave some more smiley faces dotted on some new parts of the Map.
Heading back to Ballarat, so a few stops along the way. A short walk and a quick find. Cache signed and returned as found.
The Cache needs some TLC.
Thanks for the Cache reverb

Surprised to see another cacher signed today. Yes both container and log will need to be replaced, in this golden oldie... surreal feeling.. great view from the viewing tower even though the height thing was making me nervous.

21-Apr-23
Wandered up the hill and look out tower then found the cache. The container is broken and everthing is soaked but I was able to make my mark. I tried to make it as water proof as possible but the container needs replacing. Unfortunately I had no spare one left with me

It's taken me a long time to get out here. Have always been so close, but never did the detour. Shame no tables or seating nearby. We improvised and sat on the ground under a Mallee tree. The views are amazing. The one contains the many and the many contains the one. A quick sign of the logbook before back to the car. Places to go. No one to see. Just taking in the magnificent Mallee.

Day 2 of this years Christmas holiday trip. On our way to Adelaide (from Canberra) collecting answers to one of the windmill cache multi's. Suscoe was heading to Mildura this morning from Ouyen and we had a number of caches to visit as we travelled northwards.
It was a delightful day, blues skies, a breeze from time to time and a top temperature in the high 20's.
We enjoyed this section of caches hides and saw some interesting country as we headed along the highway and the byways.

Thanks to reverb for this hide, how good are the views.
A favourite.

A bit hot to be walking up this surprising hill but a 2003 so worth it. Priorities and log signed I decided to walk up the platform and was quite shocked at the views from the top platform, quite good.

Trip log... GreyHams log says it best, in all its glorious detail... so it really is, 'What he said!'

With GreyHams we set out for another chapter of our caching challenge... To find all the counties in NSW. We flew into Adelaide early Friday morning with a return plane from Melbourne Monday night. Taking advantage of some super cheap car hire driving one way from Adelaide to Melbourne. Of course, as a four day road trip it leads into collecting as many counties as was possible as we pass through SA and Victoria as well, with a few side trips for those that were close enough.

The counties a high priority but many caches of interest, the oldies are always great, about 16 2001 caches found plus many others just as old. Web Cams, virtuals, great DT which would see us complete our fifth loop of the DT grid, large caches and lots of regular sizes too. The trip list also included a cache type of each we were missing for each state as well.

Simply, if we stopped for a cache that had made it onto the list, it was not just any random cache, it was selected for a quality of some type we were seeking.

One of the harder things about caching after flying somewhere is that all the TOTT are left behind...usually! So it just had to be done and we took an esky with us on the plane for all those fabulous cold drinks along the way.

The thing I love the most is that we also took a ladder with us on the plane too!

We had targeted the 'on your bike' wherigo series, so many puzzles, so many hours of them so the ladder was important if we wanted to find all the high DT, up the tree caches... which we did! Later in Ballarat we went 'above and beyond' with the ladder once again. A truly essential item to have, we may now need to invest in that inflatable Kayak for future adventures too!

Perhaps it must be said that our route was the least direct way we could have traveled via the Hay Plains and Griffith, but covered a lot of road, counties and locations leading to yet another great trip. Although a number of park and grabs, made closer by our reliable and tough SUV, we also managed a lot of walks, hills, bush, and just a great variety as we explored the different areas.

We crossed the Murray river many times, a lovely healthy looking river system. After our recent trip from Adelaide to Sydney, via Broken Hill and Bourke the dry rivers out there are a very sad sight compared with the Murray.

With so much achieved that we had set out for it was a very successful trip but also an enjoyable one with many memories made and a new batch of stories too! Thanks to all the CO's for there caches that lead us in our travels.

This country side is stunning....its not beautiful but eery.

Generic trip log follows
******************
Aquilus1 and myself are on a mission.... to collect all of the counties in NSW! but how to get to those 'hard to reach' ones from where we are in Canberra? It would be an awfully long round trip. The answer was supplied in the super cheap car rental deals available if you drive one-way from Adelaide to either Sydney or Melbourne... I guess too many cars do it the other way and the cars need to get back somehow. Flying to ADL on points meant fuel was by far the biggest transport cost we paid for.

This trip is actually trip number two.... to drive from ADL to MEL, via Hay & Griffith! Yeah, thats logical! It was fun explaining where we were going to people, we got a lot of strange looks. The first trip was ADL to SYD, via Bourke. The bonus of course is we have also cleaned up a lot of SA & VIC counties as well.

OK, so primary goal is counties but we of course had 5 or 6 goals. Oldies was definitely a priority, I think we picked up 16 hides from 2001 on the trip along with lots of 2002-2006's. D/T of course is never overlooked and we did well there, I think we will almost complete our fifth loop from this trip. Webcams, Virtuals and Wherigo's were all targetted and finally getting all cache types in each state.

Day 1 was us arriving in ADL at sparrows, with a ladder and esky that we checked in and driving as far as Barmera. We cleaned up the 'On Your Bike' series where the ladder really fulfilled its purpose (I never want to see another online jigsaw again!) and even stopped to grab the LBH on the way out.... after 9:30pm, and after I attacked the dirt road with my body and left a lot of skin on it. Note to self: dont lunge at dirt roads! Luckily the hotel in town was open and we obtained fine lodgings. The floor creaked when I looked at it, or breathed, or changed my mind, but the bed was the finest.

Day 2 was driving to Hay, apparently on their biggest day of the year! No motel had rooms but luckily the new hotel that was supposed to open next week was forced into opening on the very day we arrived.... I like fresh sheets but how about a bed that has never been slept in! The crossed the Murray about 5 times and it was always impressive. We saw the country side change hugely from Rivers, Mallee and the Hay plain.

Day 3 was going from Hay, around Griffith and actually turning south towards Melbourne.... it felt like a long way! We cleaned up a bunch of the counties, in fact all of them, west of and including Naranderra. My map on Project-GC is going to look so green! We got as far as the outskirts of Bendigo, stopping at the first Motel we saw.... it was better than it looked!

Day 4 was getting to the airport, which we did with heaps of time to spare. Checkin closed a huge 18 minutes after our arrival. Damn, we could have grabbed another cache in that time. Ladder back in its box and checked in. I love the fact we took our own ladder!

Now safely back at home I am already suffering from caffeine withdrawal, but thats the price you pay for living on Coke for 4 days.

Sorry for the long generic log, but it was a fun trip and I wanted to share. Smile

----------

Took us a little while, but GPS was surprisingly helpful out here. Stopped in here on our way home from camping at Lake Mournpall. Didn't notice this lookout out on the map until I saw this cache there. Enjoyed the view up on the lookout for a while before finding, the endless landscape in every direction really is magnificent and humbling. Since i'm a patch collector, I swapped out the ram head patch that was in there, thanks! I have no idea what it's for though...

This cache marks our 700th find! We adventured out today with GeoKids 2 & 5. We parked at the car park and made our way on foot to the lookout. On approach we could hear voices, which was odd as there wasn't any cars at the car park. When we reached the lookout we were greeted by two older gents who were on a hiking adventure across the parkland using compasses. One had heard about Geocaching and both were keen to learn more so they joined us to GZ and one even made the find. With cache in hand the logbook was signed while we exchanged tales of our adventures and then we headed our separate ways to enjoy the sunshine on this lovely afternoon.

On my weekend away to attend the 3 x 3 events across three states and stopped to find a few more along the Calder as I went.
I wasn’t sure what the tracks would be like in here after all of the much needed rain they had in the past 24hrs.
A couple of little soft spots along the way as I did not want to churn up the track.
Parked the Geocruiser and headed off up to the lookout.
A great view from up here and with some low lying cloud around it looked great.
After taking a couple of pics it was time to locate this cache and keep heading north
Thanks reverb TFTC.

This doesn't photograph all that well but it is an interesting view point (I wanted to see it as I'd seen some of this area from ground level). I thought I might be able to see some lakes here, but none were in sight.

Fun drive in - I felt like it was very easy to go into the corners far too fast and slide around them.

WOW - what a stayer 14 years out on the geo game board!
We were very happy to add it to our smiley collection, on a day with many DNF's. We travelled some back roads, upstream from Mildura to Robinvale, then returning with the flow via the busy Sturt Highway.

Found the cache sitting out in the open, so returned to obvious location and secured from animal interference. Blossom on box tree was prominent today.

Thanks reverb for placing caches for everyone's enjoyment.

Lookout! Hill!
A great view of the flatness of the Mallee.
Quote: "The Mallee is, for all practical purposes, is completely flat and very low-lying: in fact for long geological periods the whole region has been inundated by the ocean. Most of the Mallee consists of sand dunes that have been deposited as a result of movement of sand from the interior of Australia during arid glacial periods of the Quaternary. The soils are generally very infertile and sandy: the better ones on more stabilised sand dunes in the east are slightly loamy and pink to light brown and have been able to support wheat and barley growing as a result of the development of superphosphate and other fertilisers. In the west the soils are unconsolidated sands, much less alkaline than in the east, and not generally able to support any grain cropping.

The Mallee has no surface drainage: the native vegetation has so high a rooting density that the rainfall of most years is easily absorbed and the porous sandy soils mean that any excess in an exceptionally wet year will recharge groundwater supplies which tend to be highly saline. Flow from the Wimmera River to the south supplies Lake Hindmarsh and, very occasionally (in 1918, 1956 and 1975), overflows to the north. The Murray River is, thus, the only source of fresh water for the region and is consequently overburdened by intensive irrigation.

The climate of the Mallee is the hottest and driest in Victoria owing to its inland location. Rainfall is usually only produced by the most vigorous frontal systems or by occasional penetration of tropical air in the summer. Average annual rainfall shows a well-defined north-south gradient: Mildura averages only 267.9 millimetres (10.55 in) per year but Hopetoun in the south receives around 370 mm (15 in). Variability, however, is quite high : in 1973 the Mallee averaged as much as 650 mm (26 in) but in 1982 only 115 mm (4.5 in). Temperatures in summer are generally very hot: during the Early 2009 southeastern Australia heat wave, Hopetoun reached 48.8 °C (119.8 °F) and the average maxima in January and February are 32.7 °C (90.9 °F). In July, maximum temperatures average 15.4 °C (59.7 °F), but minima average 4.4 °C (39.9 °F) and frosts are very common."

So there ya go. Something to ponder as you stand at the lookout.
