28. november 2024 09.53# 4984On our trip from Wellington to Rotorua we decided for a little detour from the direct route in order to pass by this Oldie, which will give us an unfound hide month/yearThank you for keeping this active and for showing us this impressive item and its historyWhile already detoured we will be heading to Dannevirke, which is a place in Denmark and then to the place with a very very long name TaumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahuFirst time in New Zealand and obviously we should try to find some cachesFound with our youngest daughter - 'gida' Geogreetings from Denmarkviridis / Peter & Charlotte TFTC
We are out sightseeing in Greytown while on our way to Auckland and found this cache TFTC
Greytown has always been a place for me to relax after a crazy week of work in Wellington.I would bring my fishing rods and either visit the Ruamahanga river or it's little sister the Waiohine, which was my favorite. After delicious hours along those rivers, I would always have a pastry before crossing the mountains back home.Thank you for this instructive and fun virtual.A favorite point of course !
Another early trip over to the Wairarapa, delivering files, so time for a few more caches before I head back to work this afternoon. Really enjoyed this Virtual and the surprising answer to Q1. Can't go into any detail here, obvs, but I'm well impressed! Thanks for creating this interesting Virtual, Sallies & Raewyn
Very interesting story, thanks for guiding me here. Otherwise I wouldnt have gone there. TFTVRapu Taonga
Happened to picnic right in the correct spot! With Ihavelocomotives, best day ever at the winter festival
Staying a couple of nights with friends in Greytown, I was up early this morning to pack for our latest flight to Brisbane. I needed four caches today to get my date total up to ten, which is one of my targets for 2024. So after breakfast I set off in the bracing 2C to walk to this one first. The *item* is certainly an impressive specimen & it was very interesting to read about its origins. I have sent my answers to the CO for approval & added a photo of my visit to this log. I also dipped my *Horses Around the World* geocoin which only visits caches older than 20 years.Found at 09:17Cache #10366TFTC Sallies & Raewyn
Answers sent to CO and approval to log. Completed on our way from Napier to Wellington. TFTC Greetings from South Australia

Day 4 in New Zealand while staying in Martinborough and travelling down to Cape Palliser. Made an early start before the forecast rain that was due around noon, which came down with force. The road to cape Palliser was so varied at times, but an amazing drive. What an amazing historic feature. I havent seen one that nice in Australia.Log signed and replaced as found. Thanks for the Virtual cache sallies & Raewyn #7,845
Hello from Seattle! After an amazing trip along the southern coast of Australia heading from Sydney to Adelaide to attend a Mega-Event with my fellow Lackey and best Geobuddy Giacaches, we headed over to New Zealand for a week of caching and adventure - as I often say, we've never been closer, so it made perfect sense to plan for a stop. We have a loop around the North Island on the schedule, and I'm so excited to see all the things there is to see!Today was very blustery - it even made the evening news! Luckily we had our jackets and hats and didn't let a thing like that get in our way for caching. We stopped by here since we saw a Virtual Cache on the map, and we were keen to get a bunch of those on this trip! Answers have been sent in for both of us. Thanks so much for adding to such a fun trip!
Greetings from Seattle! I traveled down under with jtcoffee to attend the Great Leap Forward Mega-Event in Adelaide on Leap Day. Of course, a trip from Seattle to Australia just wouldn't be complete without a detour through New Zealand Per usual, We're squeezing in as many extra activities as we can, including, but not limited to: Logging our geocache finds in the southern hemisphere Finding Australia's oldest, [GC3E](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC3E) at Lane Cove, and the first-ever Earthcache, [GCHFT2](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCHFT2) Enjoying the spectacle of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in Sydney Cruising along the scenic Great Ocean Road Completing a challenge that requires finding 31 Earthcaches and 31 Virtuals in 31 days ([GC32TBZ](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC32TBZ) and [GC32TC2](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC32TC2)) Finding the oldest cache placed outside of the US, [GC46](https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC46) Exploring the iconic Lord of the Rings filming locations across New Zealand What a neat spot! Answers have or will be sent in by my personal Earthcache & Virtual coordinator, Jessie. Thanks for bringing us here and contributing to our epic adventure
EnglishWe are six Norwegians on a trip to Australia and New Zealand. We arrived in Melbourne at the beginning of February and are traveling home after the mega event in Adelaide. We travel by car and Geocaching helps us discover many nice places and often helps to decide where we choose the route between our goals which are: Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Dunedeen, and Adelaide. This is one of the caches we found on the trip and we thank you for showing us this place. We who are on tour have the nicknames: MrVonsr, ingsve, EllenSch and TeamEika. And signs the logs with N4.Great thanks for showing us and doing our tour wonderful NorwegianVi er seks nordmenn p tur i Australia og New Zealand.
Cachehilsen fra Ellen Sch, NorgeMe and MrV sr have come down to Australia and New Zealand, -an old dream has finally come to an end. Team Eika and Ingsve have also traveled with us on this trip.We have been traveling cross-country for a month, and the goal is to end up in Adeleide and mega-event on the leap year. We have especially looked for old caches, to fill jasmer'n, for a couple of pieces, and for the other two of us who have started to think about reviewing more. The vast majority of them showed up at their places, sometimes we had to search a bit, but we were usually lucky in the end. There were also some DNFs.We have mostly logged in with the common nickname N4 (ingsve, Von sr. TeamEika and Ellen Sch), but our own nicknames are also used.A big thank you to all you CO's for laying out and maintaining your caches. Without their work, we would never have been able to make a living with this hobby.Always nice to have a new smiley face on the map.Cache greetings from Ellen Sch, Norway
As a once in a lifetime holiday, this year we are traveling for 7 weeks to Vietnam, Bali, Australia and New Zealand. In Australia we meet Ellen Sch and MrVon sr and Ingsve to visit these last two countries, so here we cache together. We signed the log with N4. Now we have solved many caches so we have a large number of solved coordinates. But we are interested in all types of caches, so if you receive a log, it means that we have visited your cache. We haven't quite decided where we're going, but we'll probably let the weather decide for us. We want warmth because in Norway it is now freezing. We will stay for about 2 weeks in Australia and 2 weeks in New Zealand and we will end the trip with the Mega event in Adeleide on 29 February. So thank you very much to all of you who make it possible for us to travel around finding caches. On March 6, we set course for Norway again. There are extremely nice people everywhere and we are welcomed, we thank you very much. Thanks to our cache friends for good company on the trip.
Out on a geocache trip with Ellen Sch , Team Eika and ingsve on holiday in New Zealand, and today it was this area that was prioritized If nothing else is mentioned, we found the cache at good coordinates and it was fine To save space in the log, we often log in with the nickname N4 Many thanks to CO for laying out and maintaining this Greetings from Norway TFTCUte p en geocache-tur med Ellen Sch,Team Eika og ingsve p ferien i New Zealand og idag var det dette omrdet som ble prioritert Hvis ikke annet er nevnt s fant vi cachen p gode koordinater og den hadde det braFor spare plass i loggen logger vi ofte med nick N4Tusen takk til Til CO for utlegg og vedlikehold av denne Hilsen fra Norge TFTC

What a fantastic historic feature and and even better story. Thanks for making us stop as we head northwards
A stay in Greytown for Wings over Wairarapa and some dreary weather led to a perfect day to wander for some caching. Fun to share my new-found knowledge with my awed friends. Thanks
I loved visiting Greytown and learning about the history of the area. The historical buildings and sights along Main Street were incredible. TFTH
Love collecting virtuals so targeting them on our big drive days. Quick stop and collected the info before it got dark. This was our last stop for the day. Super interesting spot thanks for making us stop here . TFTC
Answers collected while on a road trip and a couple of nights stay in Greytown. A nice little historic town with lots of character. Not being from this part of the country I had not known this town existed until I met a local cacher who lives here, and who provided the accomodation. Answers were sent today - but collect 27 April. TFTC.
Was passing trough Greytown and pulled over by the feature as I figured surely someone had a cache here. Happily I then saw that there was indeed a virtual. Answers sent to CO. A great story associated with this feature!
Answers were sent. I enjoyed reading about the history. Time logged is for the time of my actual visit early this morning. TFTC

Passing through on the way to the south island. Answers to come. Thanks for hiding Sally & Raewyn.
On a mission to do PWGT 2 caches in full and maybe some of Tahi ones too in the time I’ve allowed myself. There will also be some extras along the way to to make break the journey
Quick stop before heading further down the road to overnight accommodation. Interesting that someone was mad enough to do what he did but those pioneers were tough

During our road trip through New Zealand we drive a rather long trip from Napier to Wellington today.
We leave Napier with lots of rain but luckily this gets better as we drive through the beautiful landscapes.
We don’t stop often, only at Pahiatua to buy a sandwich )and I can solve a lab cache there) and next at Greytown.
“Only” about 320 km but due to roadworks, windy roads and speed limit it takes 5 hours.
We start to know NZ way of driving around now
When planning the trip I saw this virtual and I’m interested in these “features”.
Indeed very impressive this one and I’m glad to see that effort is being put to conserve it.
He is a strong and brave dude I hope he’ll remain many more years.
Thanks for giving us a reason to stop here.
Best greetings from chitza from Belgium

#358 - maybe the most beautiful virtual I’ve done! What a fascinating history, thank you for sharing this with us - sending through the answers for the two questions now!
Very interesting interesting history that I haven't stopped to read before! Thanks
It was nice to visit this old virtual today. Information was gathered after walking down from the White Swan where I had lunch. I have sent my answers through an on-site message. Tftc!
Wow... I cannot imagine doing that journey! :-O

What a story And I thought the Pylon Track was hard Thanks for the history & cache Sallies & Raewyn, answers sent in!
Staying in Carterton tonight exploring the area. Thanks for bringing me here.
I have decided that I am officially useless at writing up earthcache and virtual finds. We are good at gathering the information and photos and enjoying where earthcaches and virtuals take us and learning the lessons there are to learn, but that is about as far as I often get with them.
Then a long time after the fact I look through our photos and or our note books and find a heap of information that I forgot to do anything with.
Thank goodness I found the photos we took here so that I could finally get the answers sent to the CO. I sent the answers several weeks ago and assume that we are good to log it as a find
Thanks for pointing this bit of history out to us, we would never have known about it without this cache bringing us here to read the information.

Day 1 Cache 43 of my mad mission to the Wairarapa for the 100-10-7 Challenge. The lovely Ethness has joined me as driver for the day. Stopped here earlier to get the details, but a bit later in the day before I sent them through. Spectacular tree. TFTC Sallies always nice to get a old style virtual.
Wandering in Wairarapa between Easter and Anzac day. Another day trip. Today I went from Martinborough to Castlepoint via Greytown and Masterton. Found several hides along my way. This hide was one of them.
Nice old style virtual. Thanks for placing it in this historic place.

Visiting with friends in Grey Town today, took the opportunity to visit this Virtual. A fantastic tree, an historic spot. An FP from me. Found info, sent answers to the CO. Tftc!
Very interesting story and a great tree!
That would have been some hard work to get it here!
But all this time later, it’s great to see it still standing in all its glory!
Thanks for the virtual!

I am staying nearby in my motorhome, so naturally headed over for a couple of caches. Great story, and a fantastic feature, thanks for bringing me here, cheers
Today me and rustynz have completed the daunting and epic adventure of heading to Totara hut and the old T-2 cache. We did it over 2 days today and yesterday, it was way worse than doing Tippy Top, top of Mnt Ruapehu I reckon. 2 days ago I did my 10,000th cache on another virtual…. Mnt Ruapehu. So this is my 3rd virtual for this trip.
Really interesting info on the sign, quite amusing the goings on at the time and a VERY old tree too. Thanks for bringing me here. Now to find a fish n’ chip shop here in Greytown and have a burger, chips and some fish before heading up to Palmy to stay the night with rustynz who will meet me there much later. It’s about 6pm now, and I’m getting rather hungry.

Lovely old specimen. Sadly not offering much protection from the rain but worth getting wet for.
We were passing through from Castlepoint - Masterton - Greytown - Martinborough today, and I was doing some Adventure Lab Caches and a couple of others as well, when this virtual caught my eye. An interesting story here, thanks for the history lesson. Answers emailed to the CO, TFTC
It’s taken awhile but I’ve finally got back here. One more of the remaining ‘original’ Virtuals accounted for.

An interesting find for me on a bus tour stop for lunch on the way to Wellington.
A nice quick find thanks. A little windy so we did not hang around at GZ for long. Answers sent to CO.
Ms_KR and I are off on a wee tour of the North Island. It was a great weather most of today, with the threatened rain starting mid afternoon. Mostly just showers though. Today we cruised around the Wairarapa which was cool.
Thanks to all CO's for publishing and maintaining their caches. Cheers.

After a couple of nights further south in the Wairarapa, we spent half of today in Greytown before heading home. Picked up a handful of caches including this one. Rather a magnificent (and old) historic feature. Answers have been sent to the C.O. #4017. TFTC.
Tftc. Another piece of history now known. Impressive site and virtual from another virtual owner.
I love this story. I enjoyed an evening stroll to collect the answers as well as pick up some marshmallow roasting implements for the microcachers! TFTC
Out for a drive around the Wairarapa for the day to visit a few people and collect a few caches. This was one of the caches. A very cool old tree that I had passed by a few times in the past. Interesting story too. Answers sent as requested. TFTC.
With rebel98 on a road trip of caching fun. Answers have been sent. Lovely big old tree and nearby church. Thanks for the hide
Day 1: A long weekend filled with adventure and finding caches with rebel98.
Started early with a plane flight to Wellington. The plan is to slowly make our way back to Auckland over 4 days in a rental car.
In the end we travelled 1550 km, with overnight stays in Dannevirke, Fielding and Tokaanu.
Statistics: 67 caches found including 1 adventure lab, a mixture of 7 puzzles, 4 virtuals, 12 multis, 1 earthcache, and 31 PWGT caches.
This weekend we both completed the PWGT geotour - Rua.
And on the way rustynz found her 7000th cache.
(Thank you to all the CO for their cache hides).

Talla64 and I are spending a few days in the Wairarapa doing a bit of caching and of course this amazing virtual was on the list of must do's. Amazing! Haven't seen one anything like as big as this before - and what a story. Joint answers on behalf of Talla and me have been sent to the CO. Thank you for drawing our attention to it Sallies & Raewyn.
On a trip to the Wairarapa with Flowerydaze and doing some caches and this one was on the list. Flowerydaze has sent off our joint submission to the CO, what a whopper, I've never seen on so big. TFTV Sallies & Raewyn
First find today. Did not realise this was such an old virtual. But a good spot. We really like this town, just another one finding its own identity and succeeding. TFTVC Sallies.
Last day of our trip around the lower North Island, and a chance to get a small handful of caches between Greytown and our date with the Wellington ferry. Not too much to report, traffic was busy with the end of a long weekend, and we found the caches we attempted with no issues. Thanks all.

Sainted mother of Jesus, that is one enormous regnans. I have seen a few but never one half the size of this, maybe bigger than Australia...I hope so. We liked this cache and the story associated, what a cracker little town Greytown is tftc.
Driving through Greytown we had time to collect a few caches in the area. We targeted this old virtual as one of those caches. WOW what a huge specimen and a lovely story that goes with it. FP for bringing us to see this tree.
Off camping for the long weekend, one of my favourite things to do. Stopping along the way to pick up some caches and this one took my eye. How could it not, what a beautiful tree <3 Thanks for bringing me here and highlighting a cool piece of history. What a mammoth effort they went to get those seeds here! FP TFTC
With the prospect of a nice long weekend available, I decided to spend a day or two over in the Wairarapa chasing archived Skindo puzzle caches and any other caches I would be passing right by. This Virtual has been on my radar for literally years, so even though it was late evening when I passed through Greytown, I made a point of stopping to make this my last cache for my trip.
Interesting bit of history. I can't even begin to imagine the effort involved in transporting this tree in the way it was (no spoiler) to get it here!
Thanks for encouraging me to stop and learn about it.
