Day #7 of my 11 day holiday and in Akaroa for the week.
When I was planning my trip I knew this was on my month found list but alas I do not have a 4WD so as close as I knew I'd be it was not on my "Akaroa" list. It has been in a stored list for over a year and earlier I had taken another look and refreshed the cache and what do you know...it had recently been found and after reading the log from LittleTan I decided since it was so hot and dry I'd give it a go.
I also decided if at any stage I didn't feel confident driving I would not continue. Well I have to be honest in that driving up Big Hill Road I was freaking a little bit but it was because I couldnt see properly out the passenger window and it looked like a shear drop off the mountain!!! I continued up and once round the sharp bend it was good as gold the whole way to GZ...WOO HOO!!! Even able to turn around at the end of Goat Rock Road. Doubt there'll be anyone wanting to pass so I found the cache and had lunch while admiring the amazing view. So glad to make it up here but even though the road is gravel and graded and no ruts...my advice is take it slow and easy and only if it is very dry. Going back down was fine and it was then I could see out my window and see it wasn't a shear drop off the mountain phew! TFTC

I can confirm that my Toyota Nana Car made it up and back no problem on Goat Rock Road, though no goats were seen- plenty of rocks though and some cattle, magpies, small birds and even a hare were spotted.
The road is a fairly well maintained gravel farm road- if you're confident driving on graded shingle then it's not a problem for most normal vehicles.
The cache was quickly found by Wtiger1717 and GWR while I snapped a pic then signed the log.
It is indeed a stunning view!
TFTC- container and log are in good condition despite not being found for 23 months

We had been on a great 4x4 trip on Sat (our fav is Takamatua stock track) and then spent the night at Okains Bay so we could cache the tracks today. Have to admit we didn't find the correct track first time but the stunning views made up for. Happy we could finally get to GZ and found the cache exactly as per hint. Thanks for bring us here and the cache sp00K and Ciotach.
I have a week of geocaching around Banks Peninsular, currently spending 3 days at the Okains Bay Campground.
Today's challenge was to bike to this cache. Phew. It took me over an hour to ride the 8km from the camp, and I walked 3 different sections that were too steep for me to ride. Now that I have seen the road, I would not hesitate to drive my motorhome to the Goat Rock Rd turnoff. Goat Rock Rd would be OK for the motorhome , apart from being too narrow to let oncoming traffic pass.
The find itself took me a long time, and in the end I had to use the spoiler photo in an earlier log.
There is no need to shift any rocks, but I did have to push some foliage aside before I could see the container.
Picked up the TB.

This Cache is the reason, why we love Geocaching. Ok the way is a bit tricky, but with a 4WD drive and good weather it is really easy. The view all the way is spectacular. An nobody was there. A peaceful mood. Thank you so much, for bringing us to this Cache. We put a TB in there and we give you a blue loop

It was not sure if we will do this cache till we've seen the gravel road we had to use from the sealed road. Here Mrs neggrgees gave the ok as the road was not too bad. The whole time till we were back on a sealed road at okains bay she died at least 1000 deaths. For Mr neggrgees if was just a funny thing, not dangerous at all. Two absolutely different sights of one road.

I wanted to make the most of the presence of my son (and his car!) for the holidays, so after an early finish at work, we went for a nice long drive to the peninsula. It took us some 6 hours and 250km around some cool spots, and we had a great chat along the way too! TFTC!!

Was having a weekend away at the Langer Lodge, in the Panama Rock reserve and this cache was only 4km away! Well, as the bird flies though. We were parked on Panama Road, well, it would be only a 7km drive to the cache from there but the problem was that going further up on Panama Rd was impossible in our 2WD van. Essentially if I wanted to drive, I would have to go down Panama, then up Le Bons around to Summit Rd and to Camerons Track from there, resulting in some 25km drive. And not knowing the conditions of the Goat Rock Rd, I would risk either being stuck at the cache and not able to go back up that hill or end up to walk the final leg anyway.
So I opted just to take a long walk from the hut. Turned out to be 6.5km one way. Been a while since I walked that much one way just to get one cache!
Was getting a bit worried at GZ when I couldn't find it at first. There is no cell signal and I didn't have any pictures or spoiler logs loaded except the last five on my Garmin. But I found the little jar under the rock in the end and could walk back happy!
Awesome views on the way, posting some snips from my walk.
I also did some extensive map updating on OSM for the surrounding area for future visitors

Mrs Rincewind is away in Napier for a few days and I had to get Rincewind Jr back to Wainui by 9am. With the rest of the day free what was I to do? Go caching of course! This was one of 37 finds for the day (& a couple of DNFs )
507 days since the last find! I decided to carry on and turn around before stopping for the cache. In the end I went all the way to the gate (tempted to leave a cache in the car wreck there, but didn't). Given how boggy the ground was I'm glad I was in the Prado - a 2WD would never have got back up the hill! It was even slidey in 4WD, good fun!
On my return to GZ I was glad to find the replacement replacement as a film canister would be a bit disappointing this far from anywhere.

With Toby on board but not talking to Zara yet - we head to Banks Peninsula to explore. Its Sunday, so lets go exploring, we park Zara up and we are off in Toby, with the Seagnoid as navigator/ stop-go man.
Stop here says the Seagnoid. Great views. Gave the cache an upgrade to a honey pot. Love the size of most of the caches in this area. Most of Marlboroughs are film canister size except the Seagnoid who goes to the other extreme. TFTC

Going to Ashburton with TaybeeDragon to pick up a car and spent the long weekend exploring, one box at a time. And now that we have collected Toby let's try him out on the back roads around Akaroa.
Looks like the cache was replaced recently. It's now a film cannister. Not any more, the dragon is mad keen on cache maintenance. Okay, she did not upgrade it to the regular per the cache description. But it has been upgraded from the micro to a small. A 150ml honey pot.

We were in a desperate need of a family mad mission. With all that has been going on in our household we haven't been out for a mad mission this year! So the plan was hatched to head out this morning to grab a few caches and have a 'wild sausage' breakfast. We were all up before 7am and had a pre brekkie brekkie. We were low on butane for the wee cooker so we headed out to the Red Shed for a refill or two. We were on the road at 7.35am heading Akaroa way. We were just over Hilltop when the cachelets called out 'we're straving' so we decided to head to Onawae for a cook up instead of Le Bons Bay. The weather wasn't the best it was a bit drizzly but we made do. We cooked up the sausies and had a great breakfast and play around the water and cliffs. We packed up and headed over to Le Bons Bay once we got to the top it was really cloudy, visibility was maybe 20-30m! We crawled our way down Le Bons Bay Road to score a few caches. We had a great time and ended up driving 200km and got home at 1.30pm. Good times.
I have wanted to see if I could get from Le Bons to Okains via the tops. I had a look at the GPSr and a few maps and decided on one way. We were thwarted as we headed down a 'no exit' and spied the paper road on the other side and decided to reverse back up the track to try another tack. We drove along quite slowly as the visibilty was shocking. We got here in the end and I had to turn around at the gate a few hundred metres down the track. We jumped out in the rain and made a quick find. The cache was smashed and wet so I replaced it with a micro unfortunately as the that was the only container I had on me. The views from here would be lovely on a clear day but we had a really cloudy one. We decided to go back the way we came along Camerons Track back to the Summit Road.
Thanks for the cache sp00k and Ciotach.

It is 4 years since our first visit. Time flies when you are Geocaching. We were pleased we were able to drive to the cache this time. There was fog all around us so there was no view to be seen. TFTC
Noticed this cache a few years ago on my last trip over the peninsula but at that time had a very low car and the description put me of any attempt back then. Today with the surf it was on our list of caches to grab and the drive made me glad I now had the surf. Found GZ and cache with no problems but cache is in need of some maintenance as it was full of water from having the lid almost totally destroyed. We did not have the means with us to accomplish any restoration of the container but left a small log in a new bag and placed the cache upside down to stop more water from getting in.
Road was very corrugated and made grip hard. Not that I'm complaining,I love that. Found cache pretty exposed and a little damp but in good nick. TFTC.
A great day for tiki-touring in a rental . The contents are holding up well despite the smashed lid. T4TC - M@
We enjoyed the long drive out to the end of this Road, found the Track in good condition and the view was awesome,on a nice clear day.Sadly the Lid cracked as it was brittle,so we put the Container in a Plastic Bag.It should stay dry,as it is well under cover.TFTH
Just had to come up here today as it looked steep and winding, therefore lots of fun. Unfortunately, as we got higher, the clouds engulfed us and we had 20 feet visibility. Not good when a herd of cows comes the other way. Just saw the farmers lights in time. Farmer said milk tankers come over this road to pick up from him and others.Scary drive, beware.Carried on in the fog, slipping and sliding on the grassed over track. My recommendation, cars only in summer. We had to use 4WD on occasions.
Found cache easily and it was was well worth it as the views are magnificent.
Really enjoyed the 4WD trip into here to find this one. 2WD could do it okay as road dry as long as driver confident on these narrow rural hilly roads.
Cache is in good order and nice and dry. TFTC +swag SL

enjoyed this. milk tanker must love the haul the the shed down the road.we did the loop.
We did do this one in a 4WD vehicle but only in 2WD mode. Drove right to the cache no problem. Wouldn't like to meet another car coming the other way on some parts of the "main" road! Very juddery in places. TFTC.
Found it. 4WD not necessary by fine weather. But caution is needed and take the track slow and easy.

With Sebey_nz. This one was tricky with our car... No 4WD but a old traveller's cheap car.... Xas a bit scary but evrything was dry which was a good news ! On site, was an easy find. Merci pour la cache !
In Akaroa for a couple nights family holiday - headed to Okains bay for a picnic lunch. Heading out I pointed the poor ol' family wagon up Big Hill Rd and hoped for the best. Didn't want to push our luck on Goat Rock Rd so parked up at the intersection and let Mrs G go for a much needed run. Wee wee dude was sleeping & I (Mr G) played 'I Spy' with Wee dude (I got stumped with 'something beginning with t'........tree's.....tire...t....t....??....."Teeth dad, I can see your teeth...tee hee hee"). Mrs G loved the run down but wasn't so impressed with the run back uphill! Great views all round. Thanks. Carried on up to Summit road via Camerons Track. Great fun & the family wagon juuuuust made it. tee hee. Thanks. Great spot on some knarley roads.
#6 of 10 on a great days drive to Akaroa. A nice quick find, the mighty Caldina made it all the way. Clearance was a bit tight in places, but got there ok. Thanks for the driving challenge
was a bit scared driving down the track, but the views were amazing!

With the opportunity to get away for a day and a half, I decided on a caching expedition to Akaroa and the surounding hills. This was find 18 of 39 and my last for the day. Cache easily found. TFTC. Continued on to the turning point then thought I'd go a few metres further to see where the track went (my GPS showed it going all the way to Lavericks Bay). Oops too far! The back wheels skidded as I tried to reverse back up. Now what? Maybe forwards would be easier so I went down a bit further and tried to turn. This didn't work either! Now what? How about drive right down turn around and attack it at speed. I only got half way back up. Oh well here is as good a place as any to spend the night. Next morning up bright and early. Wandered further down the farm track but couldn't see if it did descend so had another go getting back up but not surprisingly didn't make it. Out with the bike. Walked and cycled all the way to the summit road to get reception. Rang the AA, and to cut a long story short ended up being towed back to the turning point by a local farmer. Drove past the cache 12 hours after signing the log!
Was a little wet but the falcon made the road no problems along the goat track

Up here with purdiepurdie. The road was fine and beautiful views from here. It took a few minutes to locate the cache, buts it is there and in good condition.
TFTC. I was really pleased to find this cache. No problem with the road even though I don't have a 4WD. Super views.
We have no idea which road is closed. We came from Oakains Bay via Big Hill road and could not see a sign of blockage. Continued our tour via Lavericks Bay to Le Bons Bay and this road is fine too. This is a highly recommended cache with excellent views and well worth a visit. We had only our family car but with a dry road this was not a problem. Might be more difficult when wet. TFTC

The cache appears to be in need of owner intervention. I'm temporarily disabling it, to give the owner an opportunity to check on the cache, and take whatever action is necessary. Please respond to this situation in a timely manner (i.e., within 21 days) to prevent the cache from being archived for non-responsiveness.
As per last log, road still closed. Suggest archiving this one as it's a long way to come to return empty handed.
We arrived at the intersection and found the road was closed. So carried on to Okains Bay.
Road was blocked by a farmer doing some maintenance, he suggested we wait about half an hour until he had finished however instead we returned to Okains Bay, cache will have to wait for the next visit.
What a windy day it was! Almost gave up, but then with a bit more searching we found it! Our 3 year old daughter was so excited. We swapped the 'little people doll for a spinning top'.
Thanks for the find. We enjoyed the drive up there!

Went 2wd driving on a 4wd road, wouldn't have gone if it wasn't for a cache, too scary! Hint was kinda misleading, more "behind" than "under" I thought. Streetwalker bet me to it TFTC
#1052 (3/10 on a Banks Peninsula day trip). Had a bit of trouble at the turn off on to Goat Rock Rd. We stopped to discuss the advisability of taking the definitely only 2 wheel drive Corona down what was signposted as a 4WD road. I assued Qana and Troodles the cache description said we'd be OK. When we tried to start again I couldn't get enough traction, so Troodles had to get out briefly. Goat Rock Rd was OK. The main problem was the bonnet high grass in the middle of the road. Took us a little searching to find the cache, but wer got there in the end. A great vantage point. TFTC.
Dodgy road, but worth it for the views at the end. Hint not entirely helpful, luckily StreetWalker found it in the end - would have been very annoyed to DNF after that journey!

Second time at this spot. First time was too dark for us so we returned late morning to guarantee lightness. Had a bit of a fumble around the same areas as last time until finally J said "found it". Was quite obvious in the end. Lovely spot to be on such a calm clear day. TFTC

Found with cock of the rock and buzzing buzz. Found 'lizards' under a rock before finding the cache very surprising for one of our group! Fantastic views on a beautiful day. TFTC. TNLN
What a view! TFTC. Some very interested cows observed us - not sure what they made of a crowd of people searching around the rocks with their bums in the air! LOL!
Got here, in the trusty Primera, without any issues after a very late dinner. The light was fading, and the wind was blowing. We gave the area a pretty good going over, and couldn't find it. In the end we called it a night. Maybe if it had been light(er) we'd have found it, or maybe it's just not there.
We searched for a while but no luck, but all was good coz the view is amazing, cheers!!
Awesome views, Thanks for putting a cache here and showing us such fab part of the country. Easy road except for the steers blocking the way, wondered who was going to move first.

We weren't leaving without finding this one, so PB resorted to reading what logs we had on the PDA in the end, and we changed our search area a little. We found the cache eventually, not before a wandering lonely sheep almost baaa-ed it's way up the hill to us. We went down to the gate to turn around as the track was well grown with tall grass in the middle. Fantastic views and a cache well worth doing if you have a suitable vehicle!
We decided not to leave a TB or coin, as it seems it is a few months in between visits to this cache.

3pm Despite the warning of only 4wd vehicles we decided that a rental car was the next best thing. Although the track was somewhat scary for the passenger, who on occassion came very close to the edge of the steep drop - particularly when coming across a large truck heading the other way - the view at the end was well worth the drive. The snow capped mountains in the distant were easily seen as well as the full valley below. The cache was found without too much searching.

[We were on our way home from Akaroa with Larkminda (the long way). Very steep road. Luckily we were in the 4WD, but with the double sea kayak on the roof we must have made an interesting silhouette getting along the ridgeline! Came across a cow in the midle of the track. It really didn't want to let us past, but in the end decided we were bigger and ran off down the track. We spent ages hunting for the cache. And left the ground well trampled. If you don't want too easy a find, give it a week or so for all the long grass to straighten itself up gain.] The cache was further up towards the bushes than our GPS's lead us to. [TNLN Thanks]
Interesting find with adventure. There was a fair bit of scrambling around done during the hunt for this one. TFTC
Wow some awesome views from up here. Gary was very brave to attempt this on cycle from Okains's Bay. It appears to be very close to Okains on the map, but if you get there via Goat Rock Road then it will be a 500m vertical climb from Okains. I thought I might drive there in my front-wheel drive car, but once I got half way down the road decided it was best to reverse back to somewhere I could park and turn around easily. Could possibly have made it in the car but could also have been very embarassing having to find the farmer to pull my car out of a ditch. Anyway was a great walk down the road to the cache and back. Said hello to the cows and sheep. Thanks Spoook and C. TNLNSL
Gary tried to bike up from O'Kains bay. But he ran out of steam/time. That's a pretty steep track!
Great views of the bay!
The drive is awesome both for the views and the animals.
We might have driven through private property, although it was not posted. 3 bulls blocked our way and stared us down. But we persisted, and the bulls scrambled up the hill. Further along the drive we came across a group of sheep, including two lambs with tails! Jon described how and why they cut lambs tails. These two must have have been born in the wild.

Drove up from Okains bay and then part way down the 4WD track. Decided with about 1 kilometer to go that that parking the car would be wise. Had to run down the track and back again to the car as time was marching on. Although the cache was well hidden it was found quite quickly. There are great views of the landscape from up here. TNLN.
We drove halfway down on the track with our van, than we parked it on the side of the road to walk the rest. All well until we came back. In order to turn the van we had to drive backwards uphill for a few meters. We hardly made it. The steep road up was another challenge… but again we made it. . After this we decided not to drive 4WD tracks anymore, but than again we have a short memory and did it again………….
Great spot. Parked halfway down Okains Bay Rd and walked up to Goat Rock Rd, then walked down to the beach for the other cache. Very hot and windy. TNLN
The coast road from Okains was spectacular and provided a bit of excitement for my low bellied $200 caching machine. But we found the cache easy enough and somehow managed to turn around at the next farm gate. Needs a pencil sharpener if next finder reads this. Added bubbles. Cheers sp00k.
YEEHA! The road sure was interesting. Good thing we do have a 4WD. Cache was a bit tricky to find, but we got there in the end.

What a beautiful spot. Thanks for putting a cache here to make me drive up the hill. It was the most glorious day as well. Took Bouncy ball, left aeroplane. TFTC. Linleye.
Now I really did like this one - as you go down the road, you begin to wonder just how rough is this going to get (for a 2WD car). But its a great spot, and I could turn the car around only 400m further on. We had been to Okains to visit the Old Wharf Road cache, and drove up Big Hill Road. Marvellous views, and not a muggle in sight. No swaps, cheers, Grandalf.
I knew there that the 4WD would have uses other than just accessing ski roads. Whilst parked on the road, after all who was going to come way out on this limb of a road, I was amazed when another tourist 4WD came along and squeezed past. When I finally located the cache, in a place different from the hint, it was upside down with lid not clipped on and everything inside was sopping wet. I dried out the inside and all the swap contents. The logbook was beyond saving so it was discarded and replaced with a new one. I rebagged everything in snap lock bags (PS: it is no a good idea to just place contents in OPEN topped plastic bags - that is never satisfactory) and inserted silica gel sachets. Replaced the cache where the hint suggested, wiped the sweat from my brow and at last admired the views. TN. Off to lunch now at Okains Bay. Cheers.
Visiting Akaroa from Singapore and headed out to do some caching. Loved the drive. Great views! Found the cache easily. Took a frog and left the first of three Buddhas in the area. Thanks for bringing us to this neat spot.
Interesting tree nearby, looked like a totem pole with it's arms sticking up. I asked it where the box was and I swear it spoke to me. Found it quickly and enjoyed the views for a few moments before heading back to Akaroa.
In the dry, this 4WD track is better than many open roads we've driven along!
An easy find for Babiest Bear and a lovely spot for some photos.
Took nothing, left an electrical tester.

Second cache today (18h45), easy to find, but long way. I went here with my car but it wasn't easy to manoeuvre to come back.
Fantastic view. Just before I was at Akaroa, It is really beautiful.

Th whole peninsula was shrouded in mist today so we had no views at any time. Because of this we could never tell just what was over the bank that we were travelling beside! We went down Camerons Track following the lead of those before us. The track is in good condition and easily negotiated by our Bluebird. Even the 4WD track at the end was firm and OK. Found the cache quite quickly and moved on through the mist.

Would have preferred to hit this yesterday, but had to get back to watch the rugby Came back around lunchtime, also came down Camerons Track and it was in good condition for a metalled road. Track got slightly rougher near the cache, but still easy territory for the Subaru wagon. Started hunting on one side of the road, then reverted to the other and soon found it. Lovely view. Thanks for the cache, no exchange made. Cheers Gav [260]
Decided to take a wee detour while heading over to Akaroa to visit my Grandparents. Took Camerons track from the Summit road rather than heading into Okains Bay. Track was in very good condition, a 2WD would have no problem in the dry. Bitterly cold at the cache site so we were quite happy to find the cache and get back into the relative warmth of the car. Great location, thanks guys. No exchange.
