GAP YEAR BIG LAP PART 2: THE ROAD TRIP - Day 56Camping at Kurth Kiln & exploring the Yarra Valley today, we had lunch at the picnic area near the Little Peninsula Tunnel with good views of the river. We had been up to Mt Donn Buang but being fairly overcast the view was not very extensive. Found some great rainforest & a quick stroll amongst the redwood (dodging the crowds) was good. We set off on the walk to Big Peninsula Tunnel & this cache & came across a track closed sign due to damage to rails and platform from flooding. We found another way then to the stepping stones where there was no damage & the barricade was down anyway with other people on the other side so made the crossing. We were impressed with the tunnel with the river flowing fast through. Found the cache safe in a cosy hole in the stump with bark cover. Left a blue shell, took Dirtbag pathtag (which I cannot find now some time later, must be still somewhere we haven't unpacked)Exciting to find a nearly 20yr old cache!!#4102 @ 1615hTFTC Nutcache & Mykaat

Lovely spot for a cache, lots of water flowing over the stepping stones today.

On a road trip to the area with our caching friends to see the sights and pick up a few caches. As the men folk had the correct foot attire they took the plunge across the stepping stones where the water was running quite fast and was quite high over the stones. The women folk waited at the bottom of the steps for them to return. It was Wetjala who made the find. TFTC and bringing us to this great little area. TNLN.
As my mate and I were wearing thongs (foot thongs not bum floss-like thongs) and reef-walker sandals and the creek was a few centimetres (or coupla inches if you prefer) over the stepping stone and the women-folk were not wearing suitable footwear, we made our way across the river to find the cache and then have a look at the Big Peninsula Tunnel.
My mate was keen to find it first, which he didn't (Ha!) even though he went straight to the GZ but in his abundance of competitive enthusiasm he missed the hidey-hole where the cache was tucked and then started running around like a headless chicken looking for other possible hiding spots in a futile attempt at locating it before me. Smug factor 5/5 for me!

Found by elefantastic & supertiger (lauren and Daniel) from Anakie vic whilst on their honeymoon. TFTC
Quick find with the geofam while out on a bush walk. Watch for leaches, if you're doing any of the larger walk!
Found on Sunday night neither of the pens works and I forgot mine of course thanks for the cash Vic
Beautiful place, luckily the stepping stones were usable today even though the river was flowing quite well.
Joined up with some great mates on the final Yarra Expedition, caching along the way while completing the course from Warburton to the source of the river.
Took the cross country way slip-sliding down and then discovered some other cachers had found a staircase...
It was good fun over the stepping stones to GZ and a great group photo opportunity.
Thanks, Nutcache and Cache Guardians.

Was great to do this today as part of the Yarra Expedition crew. Thanks for maintaining this for us to find.
Can't remember how many times we have been here pre caching. Never since we started some years ago. It was great to be able to collect this smiley here today.
Thanks for the cache.

Found with the crew from the Yarra Expedition (Part 11). A beautiful walk crossing over the fast flowing river caused from last nights down pour. An easy find by the team before we headed back for a quick pic of the tunnel and a candid shot over the steps. Thanks for placing this cache in a fantastic location.

I headed out today with biggles1024 and Jascat to attend the last of the Yarra Expedition events which had been happening over the last couple of years but along the way we stopped of at a few other caches to see what we could find.
It was finally good to cross this one off the list after walking passed it some time ago and not knowing it was there as it was disabled and then a short time ago the river was in flood and well over the stepping stones.
Today everything was good and after a short walk to GZ the cache was found quickly.

Out on a journey today with the Yarra Expedition #11 crew and although this is the last of the events I couldn't resist the opportunity to make it my first. I'm glad I did as it was just great fun trekking the Upper Yarra Valley area on this superb almost winters day!
Another amazing tunnel and a cache that was so easy to find it was in the open by the time we got there, we spent too much time playing at the steps

The final leg of The Yarra Expedition.
BoatieTim and I caught up with the crew downstream at Gollum's Cave.
Next stop here at the stepping stones.
I have been here a few times with +Wife but never taken the time to look for this cache.
It was a great day out on the Yarra and this location was certainly a highlight.

We wondered where the path was, and skidded down the side of the hill. Then we saw the path. Oh...much easier option right there!
Awesome crossing the river here and a great photo op. Cache was in good condition, thanks for the placement and keeping this old one going!

I headed up to Warburton with SteMicMitSar and Jascat to attend an event as well as find a few local caches. Steve and I tried for this cache earlier this year, but the river was well over the stepping stones and flowing too quickly. Today, the river was several inches lower than the stepping stones so crossing was quick and easy. A short walk to GZ where a quick find was made.

A quick find with the group of cachers out exploring the Yarra today. I found the cache easily tucked into its spot and the log was soon signed by all. Some group photos were taken crossing back over the river. Some great memories to look back on! Tftc
Went for a picnic on the other side of the tunnel. Beautiful, warm, sunny afternoon
Found GZ and cache quickly located.
Pen didn't work and log book is damp. Otherwise a good hide! Never ventured past the tunnel entrance, good to see that there's more to it! TFTC!

This was our third and final LOTR cache found today - out with team milljrh and Truffle the geopup to get this series started. It was great to see the other Peninsula tunnel and move into the pretty glade of Rivendell. It seems this cache has been offline for a long time, so very pleased to have the opportunity to discover it! We found the right path down from the road (not well signposted) and I loved the stepping stones. (Truffle negotiated them well.) Once at GZ, we again used our geosense and the hint to lay hands on the container quickly. We’ll be back to do more of the series another day.
Firstly congratulations to Mykaat for keeping this severly unloved treasure going. All strength to your arm.
This fell into the top 50 unloved caches around Melbourne. No. 25th to be exact. Why is that significant? The bananas love to find treasure on this list. Most of the others have already been autograph by bananas and are up again as unloved. Only a few remain unfound under our watch. This was one.
This area has been visited before. Old Gold was then the previous most Unloved around Melbourne when discovered. That multi a highlight, with glow worms present within the final mine site. The journey that day started here. (Note: The new tunnel viewing platform here is very impressive.)
But here it was not easy. Much time was spent here. Satelites appear not to provide information at night. Torches not much better as replacement batteries were required at one stage. Sticks though worked a treat as the fire breaks were cleared around each "hint" within 50 meters of an expected location. Finally on the edge of this forensically searched area, exhausted and now very scared, the treasure surrended.
The area is high growth. By the next time, say another 2 years from now, (by the way happy 2nd anniversary since being found..... the bananas came today to celebrate with a little party) the regrowth in the area will not recognise today's constructed firebreaks.
Again thanks to the "cat" who, with patience under great duress, kept it going.

Cache Guardians sent me this great news:
Below is a copy of the message that was posted in the Bushwalking Victoria group on Facebook.
"Good news in from Ranger Matt Tresidder of the Yarra Ranges National Park: "I am very pleased to finally be able to let you know that the Goldfields Walk in East Warburton, after many hundreds of hours of work, has re-opened. The last hurdle was awaiting the completion of a Melbourne Water Project on the Yarra River at the Big Peninsular which blocked access to the start of the walk. We still hope to do a small amount of re-surfacing works, but the track is once again open to the public.
Many thanks to Bushwalking Victoria, for your assistance with works and patience with the track being closed for so long. There is still a small section closed (and will remain closed indefinitely) but there is a detour in place and the track is once again a loop walk."
I went straight up to take a look and the track is definately open for business. I checked on the cache which has luckily remained completely undisturbed throughout.

I have just had news that my tender to repair this track has been accepted. Expected completion day is the end of July. This is for the upper part of the track so I am assuming that the whole track will be re opened once this is done.
I took the dog for a walk up here on Sunday and there was a lot to see. They have definitely started work in the whole area. The track down to the river and the stepping stones is fenced off now, with signs warning it is a construction site.
I couldn't see any signs saying "Keep Out" and being Sunday no vehicles about so I took a walk down to see.
The river is down which I hadn't expected, with the stepping stones high above the water making an easy crossing. Plenty of construction going on at the viewing platform, but Ground Zero is far enough away that it should be safe.

That's great news, I was beginning to think they had forgotten it. I hope they accept your quote, that will give us a bit of a time frame with one of our own on the inside.
I had a phone call today from Parks Vic at Woori Yallock asking me to quote on re-establishing this track. They still want to do the vegetation clearance, but they also want some parts of the track re-aligned, which is where I come in. They are keen as to get this open as its been closed way longer than they want. I'm meeting them on Monday to see how much work they want done, but I gotta say, I'm keen to get this one open again too...
Thanks for keeping the community up-to-date. This track seems to have the gestation period of an elephant!
Just a wicked thought - perhaps we should bombard Park Vic with requests to get the track fixed

"With the weather starting to improve, both the Goldfields Walk and the Boobyalla Walk on Mt Donna Buang that require machine work will once again be re-visited to finish off these works and we’ll be able re-open these tracks once again. In terms of a timeframe, it’s hard to pin point a timeframe at this stage, as it’s very weather dependent, but rest assured that these two tracks are important for us to re-open. "

Well, it was a disappointing visit. To start with the river is very high, making a crossing over the stepping stones near impossible. I walked up Peninsular rd past the boomgate to where Goldfields track comes out about 1 1/2 kms along and saw the Track Closed signs are still in place at that end.
I have sent a general query message to parks.vic to find out if there is any information for us. When I get a reply I will post it here

Checked the Parks.vic update page and can't see a reference to Big Peninsula tunnel. I have high hopes that means all works have been completed and the track has been reopened. I will check on it in the next couple of days.
At Bunjil's suggestion I wrote to Parks.vic asking for some information on when this track will be re-opened. They sent a reply and a link for us.

Yes, the walking track has been closed for some time due to safety concerns surrounding disused mine shafts and degraded boardwalks etc. However, we have been working with Bushwalking Victoria, and about a month ago we undertook a working bee with a walking club and started work on re-opening it. In addition to this we have also undertaken quite a bit of work ourselves using chainsaw crews and where we can a small machine to assist with the heavier lifting. We’ve worked on a large section of the track now, but there is still a little work to do. Unfortunately I don’t have an opening date for you at this stage, as we’re still working through a long list of other tracks and picnic areas that were heavily impacted by last year’s wind storm, but it’s certainly a priority for us. We’ve had to re-focus our efforts over the last few weeks to clean up works around Maroondah Reservoir Park, Donnelly’s Weir and Badger Weir, and once we’re through these works, then we’ll re-focus back to walks like the Goldfields and Boobyalla (between Mt Donna Buang and Dom Dom Saddle). The weather has caught us a little in finishing some of the tracks also, as it’s now too wet to get the machines in to finish the job.
Can I please suggest that you keep an eye on the Parks Victoria website, where we will keep these tracks closures/openings up to date as we open them.

I would guess from this email that we can't expect any more work to be done until Spring.

When I arrived I could see the stepping stones were well under water. I went back to the car and changed into gumboots, and left the intrepid geo-dog there while I braved the crossing. The gum boots were not just a precaution, if you want to cross you will do well to wear them. The stepping stones are flat and not slippery, but there is a pretty strong push from the water flow so don't try this with the kiddies.
Have a spare pair of dry socks back in the car as well, in case you find your gumboots, like mine, are not as waterproof as they should be.
It was all to no avail though, as the barrier is still in place.

Quick check today, the river has risen so most of the stepping stones are now under water. Gumboots would have been a good idea. The Closed sign is still in place.
The bottom section of the Goldfields Track (where the cache is) has been cleared. The sign saying it is closed is still up, but I expect it to get taken down soon.
Turns out I am part of a team volunteering for track maintenance in this area. We are to meet at the Big Peninsular Car Park tomorrow and will receive instructions from there. Fingers crossed we are fixing up this track!
The sign is still in place. It uses the words Temporarily Closed which is the only ray of hope
The park rangers have still not removed their barrier, but work has been done on both sides of Peninsular rd. The access stairways on both sides have been widened and re-graveled with fine sand. Hopefully this activity indicates more to come.
Quick check this Sunday. The stepping stones are now nicely clear of the water surface so crossing the river is a breeze but the Park Rangers are still blocking access to Ground Zero.
As soon as the Park Rangers clear the track the cache will be available again. I check on it each week. It's very disappointing as GZ is not on or near the closed track, but simply shares the same access
Can I please have a date when you expect this cache will be up and running? Alternatively, you can visit this page and post a note every 28 days so as to keep everyone up to date please.
Cache again available for seekers to enjoy, thanks to Mykaat and the Cache Guardians.

Visited Rivendell this morning and the river has gone down enough to make an easy crossing over the stepping stones. One of the stones was still a little under the water, so wear boots.
I have replaced the cache.
I have replaced the cache.
The cache is ready to replace but the river is back up and moving fast, all the recent rains have swollen it and the stepping stones are well under the surface again, preventing safe access. Too early yet to re-open this
Checked back today and the stepping stones are now above the water. I crossed easily and wasted some time at the spot I was sure the cache would be even though the GPS was way off before remembering that this was a Nutcache cache and it would be far away from any tourist trap.
Decided to follow the GPS where ever it wanted me to go and sure enough I was quickly at GZ. Grabbing a stick I poked and prodded about and soon had the cache in hand.
The cache contents are soaking wet and slimy. I have brought it home and will try to restore the two log books in my dehydrator.
The Parks Office have closed access to the walking track that passes GZ. This is due to some damage to the track further on, making it unsafe for hikers. I had to go around the barriers in order to retrieve the cache but I think that means we can't open the cache until the track is re-opened to the public.

day1976 has given me the co-ordinates of the actual cache
I headed up to check it out, but the river is still high, making the crossing a bit tricky. It will be a few weeks before the river drops enough to make it possible to cross. I'll keep checking back.

I am happy to take it on as a community cache or adopt it as one of mine, anything that works.
I only live about 5km down the road from it
I'll need someone who has found it to email me to tell me where to find it though, as I have tried a couple of times and never had any luck.

I only live about 5km down the road from it

I notice this cache is on 4 watch lists - can I please have an up-date on what is happening with this cache please?
I would be happy to adopt this cache as I live less than 10km down the road from it, and know the spot well so maintaining it would be no trouble. Unfortunately I never found the old one, so would need clear directions from somebody.
I am heading this way 24/06/16 for a planned days caching.
Given the deadline of 21/06/16, I am happy to place a container and logbook at GZ if this saves this historic cache from being archived.
I will only do this at the request of the CO or as a favor/request to a future CO of this cache - to cover myself from any 'Angel Dropping' flak.
I will not claim any unloved.
Cheers

### **ACTION REQUIRED** ###
This cache has appeared back on my list to be Archived. I note that it was placed in 2004 therefore it does have some historical significance and I am reluctant to take any action immediately.
The cache owner needs to indicate when they expect the adoption process will be completed.
**Please log the situation and/or your intention along with a time frame/date.**
### A response by 21st June would be appreciated.###
As there has been no response by the cache owner to the previous note, I am forced to archive this listing.
I am attempting to contact the CO to either adopt or formulate a maintenance plan for this geocache.
Based on recent logs it would seem the circumstances pertaining to this cache have been changed since the cache was published, to the extent that the cache no longer conforms to the Groundspeak guidelines or no longer has the profile/form that it had when it was originally published.
This cache is classified as a Traditional but components of the cache now fit the profile of a Multi.
Disabled to allow Co to explain the situation.

After arriving home and thinking about our DNF I realised that we were misled by looking for the cache at GZ, not the clue. As the cache indicated it was a traditional we didn't realise there were two steps, hence our problem.
This cache needs to be relisted as a multi to accurately reflect what it is.

We'd torn the kids away from campsite laziness for a bit of an explore the local area. This was our first stop, and after venturing down one side for exploring, cicada catching, photos on the concrete blocks across the river, and general shenanigans, we came down this side for more of an explore. However, that explore didnt result in a cache. A number of us explored the logical spot, and could see a spot where a cache might have been, but no find for us.
#4 of #6 caches that I attempted today for the unloved.
Once again Nutcache you bring my to a great location! The find on this one was not to be though.
I approached WP1 and saw what I must do. It is so wet this time of year, it made it very slow going. I searched as I climbed and before long I had climbed back to my car! No clue though.
As this was not on my list of caches to do today, climbing those wet rocks again would be risky and time was running short, I decided to hop in the car and move on.
I'll be back though!

Working my way up to Sydney via Woods Point, Jamieson, Craigs Hut, Mt Howit, Wonnangatta Station and Mt Buffalo. As well as seeing the sights. I wanted to knock off some of the caches along the way. With a lot of rough km's ahead of me i was unable to stop for them all. But i think i found a good few in my journey. Thanks all for placing them.
Beautiful place! Went through the lower path, it's easy this time of the year. Beware of leeches!
Logbook is wet and slimy, as is the pen. Needs maintenance.

GazaC and abl973 risked life and limb on the cliff-face without success but I stood back and lo, my torch caught a glimpse of something NQR! A fun walk to GZ in a lovely spot, thanks for bringing us here.
As has been mentioned plenty of times in previous logs this is a multi and not a traditional so once that confusion was put aside the hunt for the cache was on. GazaC, Two_Drews and myself arrived at the posted GZ to find two families were here enjoying the day. They were obviously curious has to what we were up to so Drew explained and demo'd what we were doing. I was surprised that they had heard of Geocaching. My GPSr had a good sat lock and insisted GZ was far away from where the hint was pushing us. We searched over slippery rocks that posed a risk to some serious harm and were about to give up when Drew spotted something much lower down which we were happy to discover was half of what we sought. With the numbers we needed we set off to find the cache. The stepping stones were just under water but we made our way across and followed the compass arrow straight to the cache. This location is certainly a fantastic place to discover. Both sides of the tunnel were just spectacular but the bugs were ferocious so unfortunately we couldn't hang around long. Thanks Nutcache for the adventure.
This was a really neat spot to visit. coming down the stairs I instantly understood why this cache was named so. Not knowing what to expect I was delighted to find a serene clearing fronting a fun looking swimming hole. One of the dads already present pointed out a location where people sometimes jump from... maybe another day.
scrambling about on the rocks my foot slipped and i landed on my bum. nothing broken, I returned to the task at hand and reflected that if i'm going to slip i'd rather it happen now and here and not in a more dicey scenario elsewhere. Two_Drews eventually found WP1 and we were off. Awesome view again on the way to GZ. The stepping stones were great fun and some a little slippy. Now I was glad i slipped already at WP1..
Another really cool spot . While abl973 got attacked by flying crawlies I somehow was left alone and soon located the cache.
Really enjoyed this cache. Another top location. More pictures taken. Thanks nutcache.

Hmmm, a multi cache when it's listed as a traditional. Anyway, there was a LOT of water coming down the river at the first point and the clamber over the rocks was dicey to say the least. They were VERY slippery and at one stage I looked down at the swollen river below and thought to myself "What the hell am I doing? No one knows I am here and if I fall in the river I'll never be found!" Also if I drop my GPSr I am up for another $250 which muggle-mummy has already told me that I am not allowed to spend. So faced with the threat of caching via iphone I began making my way back to safety when I spotted the first container. Perched precariously on a rock above the swollen river I gained the final co-ords for this cache and headed off (the indirect route). Coming to the part where the trail crosses the river I could see the stepping stones that I was supposed to use, but they were completely submerged by the swollen river and the water was gushing around them (see pic). Time to get creative, I back trekked, bush bashed a bit, crossed a creek using a fallen branch and some logs and finally found my way to the other side of the track. GPS was all over the place (and so was I). Searched a lot of unnecessary places until the GPS settled down a bit and the find was made. As much as this is listed as a trad when it is obviously a multi, it gets a fav from me for the adventure in the bush and teaching me to not give up, even when you think your about to fall into a swollen river and die and your body will probably never be recovered and your family will live in grief for years. Thanks nutcache!!!

The spot at WP1 looked very pretty, would be nice to have a picnic down there. You might get eaten alive by mozzies, or maybe they don't hang around there as the water is flowing past too quickly. Then onwards to the final, replaced by a helpful previous cacher, really easy to find. It was helpful to have a cache to find there, as it urged us to continue along the walk and find 1 more.
BTW yeah this isn't really a trad anymore, a quick switch to the multi setting might prevent some newbie future cachers from getting confused.

This was a very easy cache for since I only pointed into the right direction and the rest was done by the crew. I think my contribution was pointing out the stairs down to WP1
Lovely spot!

Find # 2701
Date 23rd Mar 2013
Time 12:37 PM
Today I was headed out with Dr Jim, Josiey, º and Danozz on multiple missions. I had agreed to join their Oxfam Trailwalker team during the week, so it was time to put a few kilometers under my feet. We also wanted to find a few Unloved caches, so we headed to the Warburton area.
This one was really a multi, but what a fantastic spot, with a small history lesson as well. I managed to find the first container, we then made our way along the path to GZ where Jim made quick work of finding the cache.
Thanks again to Nutcache for the hide. TNLN.

Today the Nightcaching Australia team for the Oxfam Trailwalker (°JosieYahomburgdrjim7) along with danozz headed to the Warburton area for a little training session based on finding unloved geocaches.
This was a really lovely multi that took us to an interesting and beautiful spot. Well named cache, I'd say.

This was an enjoyable cache in a fantastic spot with great company. What more could I ask for? TFTC.
The Elves had Rivendell well hidden today. When I could get my GPSr and my iPhone to agree, they had me swimming for WP1. The rest of the time they had me going in all directions. I tried the Hint but without a GPS fix, the search area was too large. Oh well, I didn't get to 1st base today so it will have to wait for another visit.
