On a tiki tour from Wellington to Napier via Dannevirke and tomorrow back home via Greytown. I spent ages looking (and feeling around) for the cache, but eventually gave up. Just as well as the storm that had been ominously hovering above Castlepoint suddenly burst into life. It was a short but torrential downpour, which made for scary driving conditions, and we were very glad to reach our lodgings at Whakataki.
Very wet day but cache contents nice and dry plastic bag cache is ion is very ripped. Beautiful even in the rain, partner had fun playing with the parachute man! Thank you!
Drove along the coast enjoying the views, but couldn't rind the prize in the locations I was prepared to get to... I've obviously got soft in Wellington!
A bit of a scramble with SJT_NZ but after trying several bushes came up with the prize. Cache all in good order and the best view we've had from the GZ. TFTC
A wet and blustery day in Castle Point, but as always, spectacular.
Took us a bit longer than it should have to find this one, but got there in the end.
All in good order, TNLNSL, TFTC.

I haven't been to Castlepoint for about 25 years - so time to come and find some caches in this area. Good to do another old cache. Thanks for the cache.
What a nice little hike and a great spot.
Thank you for that cache.

WOW this one should be a high diff rating. i was terrified up on the narrow ridge above the huge drop of Suicide Rock! a bit of a short goat track up to there but once there you still have to manoevore yourself to reach the cache Scary stuff for me!!!
We were out at Mataikona and called past on the way back to Wellington. Met a couple of fellow geocachers who had searched without success. We went back to look and after a short search Tararua Girl came up with the cache. Really pleased to find this one given how old it is, and the recent history of non-finds.
Cache was pretty much at the GPS mark and hidden as per the hint. TFTC !

Located in the company of Broadbridges and son. Great to have the company of an experienced cacher on this one. I thought it a hard find as there were many potential bushes! A fantastic area to visit for the long weekend and finding the cache was the icing on the cake. TFTC
PS: Plastic bag has fallen apart but log is still dry.

The road was a bit dodgy in places, so relieved we didn't meet much traffic coming in the opposite direction.
First tried the wrong side, then StreetWalker soon tracked it down on the right side. Relieved as it could have taken a while!
Very interesting geology around here. Many thanks for bringing me here.

#5579. An interesting side trip on our way to Castlepoint. Some of the rock formations beside the road are very interesting (if rather unstable-looking). Initially I approached from the south, before realising I was too high, and beat a retreat. An initial look failed to locate the cache. I then read past logs, which did little more that tell me it often took a while to find. Luckily it was in the next place a look. A spectacular spot. TFTC.

The full story of the name of this rock is worth reading about. Certainly a nasty place to jump off. Enjoyed the coastline drive. TFTC
Found in the dark towards the end of a day's expedition to the Wairarapa to clean up a few unfound caches. I really surprised myself with this one, I had expected difficulties but with the aid of a really powerful torch I found the cache after only a couple of minutes within 4 metres of where the GPSr was pointing me. One advantage of being here on a fine calm night was that I was rewarded with one of the most fantastic displays of stars that I have seen for a long time. It was also very satisfying as this was the last of the 6 caches in the Castlepoint region for me to find with four of the 6 found in the dark. Cache is in good order - signed log, TFTC and for bringing me to this interesting spot.
We made this one a struggle and very nearly gave up. Climbed up the wrong side following the compass before finally reading the description. Then got to the right place and didn't really believe the GPS after reading some of the logs. In retrospect the GPS wasn't too bad. Maybe 9M out. Probably a lot of growth in the two months between finds didn't help. Apart from a few spiders making their home in the plastic bag the cache is in good order.

Thanks for bringing us out this way - drove on to the end of the road to have a look around. Amazing how many baches out this way. Fairly quick find. TFTC
After doing the Castlepoint caches decided to check this one out. Great ocean views all the way along this road. Surf was cranking!
Took quite a while to find this cache as the GPS was all over the place in the area, didn't find it at first after some extensive searching. Went back to car to check logs but no mobile connection. My partner said to go back and have another quick look so we did and she found it!!! TFTC

This was my first visit to this area and I was rewarded with great views on a day where the weather was changeable. I needed to search for a few minutes to find the cache which is still in pretty good condition. TFTC.
Found just on dark. Impressive rock - pretty nasty drop to rocks and sea below. Took a while to find the cache, but found it in good condition. SL TFTC
Interesting location. At GZ I recognised where I needed to search from a spoiler photo. It was rather steep so had to use some careful footing. TFTC
great drive along a very interesting coast... some very interesting rock like formations when the tide is out.. and only geocaching would have us scrambling around on the side of a very steep rock... TFTC will be back for some paua
It was well worth the drive up the coast to get this, and enjoyed our views and wander around the rock. TFTC
When plaaning our caching trip to the region I'd looked on Google Earth and thought this would be a spot worth coming to. And I'm glad we did as it was a beautiful drive even on a dampish overcast day. Quick find at GZ and placed Travelcoin. TFTC
Excellent, if somewhat precarious, spot (with a 2yr and 5yr old in tow) for a cache.... fascinating rock formations nearby!

Enjoyed coming out here, spent some time sitting just watching the waves, heading through tinui and over to alfredton then on to pahiatua. Im going to brave the isolated gravel road.
Windy day today - good thing I'm part mountain goat. Found without too much trouble. Very impressed with the boulder strewn bay from the cache site and the "beach of razor blades" on the way. Spotted the plaque, but didn't stop as it was getting late. TNLNSL & TFTC.
So worth driving up this lovely piece of coastal road. Found the cache after lots of rustling through vegetation. Left a whale magnet, took a marble bag. Coincidently, the following day, we read the full tragic legend of Suicide Rock on a notice board in Pongaroa (there's a cache there). TFTC
Great to finally get this one off our list.. Beautiful rocks and interesting history.. Couldn't find the cache, so stopped, opened up my mobile phone and read the logs.. Afterreading the logs I realised I was standing not more than 20cm from the cache and found it easily.. On the way back we also found the plaque mentioned in the logs.. (When you see the Tsunami Warning Sign look to your right - Its over there).. Thanks for the cache and history lesson..
Climbed to the top first to look at the view, then GPS took us right to the cache. On the drive back we noticed a cairn with a memorial plaque by the side of the road. It turned out to be a commemoration of peace breaking out between 2 Maori tribes of the area, dated 1844 so this pre-dates the Treaty of Waitangi. Thanks for showing us an interesting spot near Castlepoint.
Following the clues and the beaten track across the brush this wa s quickly uncovered. Although one of us chose to mount the rock! Fabulous view of boulder strewn bay. Rescued the parrot who was croaking "take me, take me!" I think it was freaked out by the period of time spent with a suicidal rock.
Have being pass this rock a few times as my Wife Uncle and Auntie use to live at the end of the road and we visited them there, never would have known that there was a cache there, cools spot, great for fishing, Found cache easily was a bit wet but contents were ok, dried it out, as last visit was a while, TFTC TNLNSL (517)
Found this with Rachel, our 2nd cache for the day. It was a lovely drive out here. We cleaned up a bit of rubbish while we were here.

Our 2nd cache. Interesting rock. Easy to find. The kids carried a pebble with exposed crystals from Castle Point beach to put in this cache and took a necklace.
A little further on the same road we did some fishing and caught a couple of kahawai.

You can't come all the way out here and not make the side trip north to reach the jumping off point, can you?
Interesting windy narrow road trip in. Definitely a rock to be respected.
The cache was found as described and per clues. Thank you. TNLNSL
TFTC - found with team cacher Sweet P

a precarious climb in windy conditions until the gps co-ordinates settled down and honed in on the target
Suicide Rock..The name says it all, rainy and wet...quick stop .Easy find for Gencuster the coordinates were spot on, cache exactly where it should be. Nice drive around from Castlepoint. No 8 "On the Long Way Home Road Trip". TFTC
18:44 Quick scramble in the (very) wet while we were in the area to find cache #8 of 'the long way home' tour. Cords spot on. Thanks for showing us some country we'd never see otherwise. TNLNSL
Found at around 8:45 pm. It took us quite a while to find this one, as we ended up taking a much longer route pushing our way through the bush than was necessary.

Wow, that's some road, a bit of a nightmare for Paua. Awesome views, what a wild stretch of coastline, stunning. Punga did the hunting and soon found the cache.
Rescued the Old Salt TB.
As usual the trip back along the narrow road wasn't nearly so terrifying, stopped to take photos. A beautiful part of NZ.
Thanks for the adventure.

Found the cache and just laid back basking in the hot sun and the ambience of the magnificient outlook, I could of sat up there for hours.
This is a great spot for a cache without a doubt, many thanks.

Awesome!! Well done for putting one out here - been past a few times now but never imagined someone would have put a cache there but come to think of it, what a great spot. Have fun exploring around the rock and in the rock pools. Such a cool spot on the NZ coastline. Thanks!! TNLN.
Our last one for the day on our best day yet (100% on 9 caches!) and our 30th find!
Nice drive and lovely views as sun started to set. Beautiful area. Found rock easily enough but took a bit of clambering to discover the cache. TNLN SL TFTC.

1700. Popped over from Castlepoint to do this one, you can see the rock from quite a distance. Gps jumped around a bit and Pinetree used the clue but it could have been in a number of places, when he discovered he was virtually standing on top of it. Neat spot and we were lucky having no wind to contend with.
ps. the pen was a bit stuffed, we didn't have one on us so can next cacher take a replacement one.
- Freakboys geocoin.
Cheers

Last cache of our 7 cache weekend
We took the "scenic route" from Ekatahuna vie Alfredton. Started getting a little worried that our little sports hatch wouldn't quite make it through the back-blocks and forestry roads, but the little trooper proved us wrong (not for the last time today).
Had no trouble finding this one and took the opportunity to explore the surrounding area.

+Geocoin - about as easterly as it's going to get for now - perhaps an airport is in order?

Woahhhhhhhh....... On reaching this site, and with the wind blowing a howling gale, the steepness of the rockside put me right off. But big brave Kina and his trusty GPS strided out across the sloping terrain, searching as he went. Whacko, Mr GPS himself found it right on cue. The cache container was rather wet on the inside but the plastic bag containing the inportant contents was dry enough to leave our log entry and calling card. Awesome scenery, and certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Hurray! After 2 DNF's today, I was thinking this wasnt a gtood geocaching day at all. It was hosing down, so I elected to leave the cache closed and dry. Nice spot, far too windy to explore the rock, that would be suicidal! +_ nothing TFTC
We camped on the beach on the way to this spot some 30 years ago. Houses all along this area of beach now. GPS spot on so was an easy find on a beautiful morning.

Wow, what a place! a long way out but wonderful scenery. Then, we found the cach, but not on the rock, have a look at the photos.
UPDATE - Visited the cache site today and can confirm it is still there

Hunted for ages...appeared that people had been in the area (which we now see is the case). GPS was all over the place and even with the clue it was all too vague. Geocaches hidden in this terrain have proven to be very difficult for us! Lovely spot, wouldn't have visited if not for cache and not finding it didn't detract from the visit at all - great little adventure!
Hunted round pretty well without success. We were a little tired after spending the afternoon snorkeling for paua. May just be us being lazy, but still a beautiful view and well worth the drive.
Came back again on a sunny Saturday and this time met with success. Perhaps we just weren't being adventurous enough last time! The bag the cache was in was not sealed and had become home to several large albino slugs. The cache itself was slightly musty but the contents seemed fine. I replaced the plastic bag with a larger one and sealed it tightly.
Great spot this one - recommended to all who come out for the Castlepoint cache! Thanks Zakin and Lany.

We actually went out there last night to try and get Rufus. It was a bit mad, only half an hour of daylight left, no GPS unit, and complete newbies at the helm! We can't help it, we are newly obsessed!
We did find the rock, but unfortunately we couldn't find the cache anywhere. It could have just been us, for aforementioned reasons, but there were quite a few recent slips at the roadside and one "wash out" sign a little bit down the road, so I fear it may have got hit hard in the storms late last year.
I am expecting my GPS to arrive in the next couple of days so we are going to make a day of it in the weekend, go to Castlepoint cache and try again to find this one.
Our first failure... Now it's 50/50.

I was planning to go in the next week and rescue Rufus - he must be contemplating his own demise being so long at Suicide Rock! I will try and get him into Wellington and perhaps on a flight...
Another FTF on this short trip ! Great coastline, Cache found no problem, GPS spot on.
