Found on a visit to Mount Buller for the day while staying at Benalla for two nights. The main aim of the day was to qualify for two high-altitude challenge caches in the 'Straya' challenge series near Karoonda SA. Enjoyed the search with high altitude and high terrain caching, with incredible views along the way! Noticed that it's almost a year since this cache was last found. Thanks for the cache Derringer!

Due to unforeseen circumstances Mr Smokey Bear will no longer be a part of Team Smokey Bear and will continue his adventures as "SmokeyBearOG".

So I'm relogging all previous finds under my new account.
Unfortunately this log will not show the original logging date.

**Thanks to Derringer for this adventure, looking forward to many more.**

Found with catnap777 @1:00pm on our Mt Buller adventure. Big Grin

Wow!!! What a view! Surprised
And it was so special to share it with just one other. <3 <3
From beyond the summit we had the mountain to ourselves. Cool

With a fairly late start to the morning, catnap777 and I managed to avoid the dreary weather. We still couldn't see too much from the summit carpark, but with the wind trying to blow our jackets off us we knew the cloud cover would come and go quickly. Razz As soon as we headed off the wind was not so fierce and walking up to the summit then along the ridge to GZ, the clouds parted long enough to get a few glimpses of the top of the world and even a pic or two when we were quick enough. Red Face Just enough and make our jaws drop and ensure we come back to check it all out again as soon as we can. Big Grin

Getting our names in this amazing old Derringer cache meant so much to me having snuck my name into the old archived "One Step Back" when I was being shown around Buller as a newbie at my very first grocaching event. [^]
I wonder if I could still find that old ammo can? Twisted

TFTC Derringer. A wonderful walk in surreal surroundings that cat' and I will never forget. [^] [^] [^]
Cache and contents found and returned in fair condition. The old container has seen better days but the lid is still held down in its compact hidey hole. [8)]

dalerious and I planned a trip to Mt Buller for this Saturday. Looking at the forecast a few days prior, and it was touch and go. Well, we could not have striked it better, although it was 1° with a wind chill factor of -7° for most of the day, uncannily we weren't cold. I was after elevation, low and high and got both, plus a webcam and jasmer, with a few other's thrown in the mix. dalerious, as usual was happy just being there and grab a few here and there Smile. All in all a ripper day and night, with our last duty at 2200hrs replacing a cache at Gooram for a fellow cacher that needed help Big Grin.

A Derringer cache on the edge of the world. Loved the walk, view and the experience. How lucky are we who play this game Smile.

After a stunning walk beyond the summit, past the cairns and to the edge I’m sad to say we didn’t find it. The app was saying We were still 20m away from the cache at the point I no longer felt safe. Maybe it was a GPS thing or maybe I just don’t have the nerve of those who went before me.
Either way, it was a beautiful walk. Stay safe! ️

Another great cache find. Thanks for bring us to wonderful buller in summer

What a view! Well worth the extra little trek, leaving the kids sketching around the cairns. Our first trip away in over a year. Thanks for the hiking motivation!

Up at buller for a bit of a hike, this was next on the list. We walked on from the summit and after looking down at what we would have to do in a minute, we made the slight detour to go find this one.
Bit worried when the GPS still said 100m over off the edge, but it turned out to be not bad at all. Great little spot. Found cache pretty much straight away. Great views as well. TFTC

Day1976 and I were going to be heading up to St Arnaud for the weekend, but with the temperatures set to soar, we changed our plans and headed higher up.
After finding a spot to camp, we set up and lightened the load in the car, then headed up towards Buller.
After making it to the top of Buller, we headed further along. We finished climbing back up the mountain goat track and then went along the next ridge to this cache. It sure was one step beyond, and a very scary look down revealed a death trap if I slipped. Great views though!

Facing the prospect of Archies, a 50km hike in 15 hours I thought it would be a good idea to go for a walk. Maybe this is not the best idea. Well here I was after crossing the summit and thankfully this one did not give me problems locating as I had on the previous cache. I also managed to remain one step back and not go one step beyond.

Thanks Derringer for the cache.

"Not the spot for those who dislike steep slopes"
That was true for me.

If the steps beyond refer to beyond comfort levels, I'd say this was more like 5-10 steps than one. Sometimes well chosen cache locations have a certain inevitability to them - this was one of them. I could see that it would be just down there, a couple of steps from doom, and I didn't like it. My logical brain told me that given the wind was blowing up the slope, and it wasn't too steep here I would be fine and not even be one step beyond what was sensible. My logical brain won out and I signed the log, but I was glad to return to somewhere slightly less precarious.

Fun track in + a location which challenged me + great views = favourite point. Thanks for the cache.

The Kettles were planning their (what seems to have become) annual summer holiday to the Victorian High country. For part of the family, the attraction is the seemingly endless choice of mountain bike trails to ride. So while the riders discussed what trails were their top picks to ride, Ma Kettle had an idea....I wonder if Kettle Twin 2 and I could complete the Victorian 1700m challenge. A quick look at the geocaching map confirmed that there were enough possibilities close to the riding trails and so the challenge began....
After a DNF on Mt Stirling yesterday, we were hopeful that today would have more success, or our hopes of completing the challenge would disappear. While some of the family explored the nearby MTB trails, Ma and Pa Kettle and Kettle twin 2 set out for the summit and the possible cache finds for the day. A quick glance at the arrow and we realised where we had to go. Past the sign warning of the imminent danger should we stray from the path which we followed out along the ridge. The closer we got, the more steeply the path dropped away, and it was Pa Kettle who scrambled down the last 20m and made the find.
One down, 14 more to go to complete the challenge. Just love the fantastic views from up here... on a day like today, we were treated to endless mountains… in all directions. Thanks for bring us here.

Travelling here from Adelaide to race tour of Mansfield! I was refining the course today and thought I’d get some caches up mt villa whilst I was around!

Found on 3 March 2018 at 12:35:31 pm. Find #2507. 2nd for day on an amzing mountain with beautiful 360 deg views with ausyowie , my first ever best mate.
Great company and great conversation with similar interests.
Could have stayed up and enjoyed this view for ever but the sunscreen would have ran out and ausyowie would have been very late for his commitment.
Anyway we sat for as long as we could and then sadly left the highpoints and headed for the lower grounds.
Thanks for the adventure.

The weather today was sensational. Sitting up here enjoying the warm summer breeze, great view and the company of my oldest mate, 88Andy88 I could've sat here for quite a while. Alas, I have an appointment back in Melbourne and have to get a move on. I love spots like this for caches, Thanks Derringer.

Reperio at 1800. Found with the_garbagman and Mighty Minions.

We made the drive from Alexandra to Mount Buller today, and while our goal was to visit the webcam, we couldn't resist walking up the summit and heading over to this on. Being an old school cache, and that I hadn't found a Derringer cache for a while, I couldn't pass up the chance to find it. Found the cache in a well hidden spot, and whilst the cache has some signs of damage, it is holding up OK. A beautiful spot on the back side of Buller, and the views were at their best.

Gratias Derringer.

Day 2 of the mega-event, and today I spent a little time at the event-area in the morning, before I hiked in the Mt Buller-area. It was absolutely beautiful up there, and I even got to see snow, not what I expected when coming to Australia. I decided to try doing the West Ridge-track because of all the nice d/t-combinations. I hadn't expected it to go downhill, and I was a bit worried about the grey clouds, but nothing to worry about, the weather stayed good and I had a beautiful walk with amazing views!! When I started at the parking, I decided to go for sneakers, the terrain looked very easy, but that was a bit wrong, I should have been wearing my hiking-boots.

About this cache:
This one had some really really good views!!! It was a quick and easy find. The lid of the container is broken, but the content was dry as it's under a rock.
Tftc, greetings from Norway

19-Nov-17
One of many caches that we found while exploring the spur and bringing up some milestones. Cache hadn't been found for 6 months but it survived the snow season and ready to be found.

Thank you Derringer

A classic case of just one more...

After completing 12 types in a day we decided a short walk was in order and somehow converted this into several of the higher caches on the hill.

After the sheer terror/fun of the nearby cache this was essentially a stroll. The views continued to be awesome! TNLN TFTC

19-Nov-17
While not the earliest start due to caching into the previous night we set about making our way up the mountain having got word the team was shrinking in size from the previous days activity so we set off with dahumbug and arrived.
Having seen the COs name from many searches of good caches to do at least we where in the area and headed over. Great views on top and then we started to go over the edge so hoped GZ would be soon and it was. The container is a little worse for wear with the clip locks broken but the contents were good. We completed the signing duties and re hid. TFTC. Some more unloved

The almost straight line to this from 2 steps beyond involved some interesting terrain to negotiate. I strongly recommend sticking to the paths if you doubt you coordination. A beautiful part of the country on a stunning autumn day. Thanks for the cache and the excuse to go fo a walk.

25-Mar-17
An afternoon at Mt Buller, so before leaving we headed out to grab a couple of caches we missed last time. An easy walk out to this one with stunning views.
Cache is in need of replacing. The clips on the lid are broken. I've put it back so the water shouldn't get in but it was open when I found it. I doubt it will survive the winter snow this way.

C'mon - just one more - it's just over there. Glad we made the effort to come that little bit further as the clouds parted and we were rewarded with a glorious afternoon view over the valley. Now it's time to turn tail and beat that cloud back to the car [:o]

Cairns a long way from Cairns

The ham sheltered in the shoulder as I made one step beyond. Somehow I attacked this one completely the wrong way, I blame the fog for that. So after I clambered down the hillside in completely the wrong direction, and then along the slope for a good while, eventually I headed in the right direction. Found the triple cairns and the cache (with the arachnid guardian) soon afterwards. Thanks for the treasure

Been a long time since I've found a Derringer cache.
The high country locations they are found never disappoint and this is no different.
What a spectacular view from Gz.
Spent a couple days biking up and around Buller so thought I'd spend at least a few hours today with the hiking boots on and find some of the multitude of caches that have appeared on top of this mountain.

Glad to have found an old and original Derringer cache, reminds me of a time where caches in the high country were scarce. Finding just one or two took some planning and preparation, and when you finally found it there was that great feeling of satisfaction.
Today I spent 2.5 hours finding 5 caches with terrain ratings from 3 to 5, and that was with time spent looking at views, photographing wildflowers along with searching / finding and signing caches.
Guess that's one way to boost difficulty and terrain averages quick. All seems too easy now, almost like a high country power trail.

Cache log is nice and dry but unfortunately all the clips on the container have broken off. The cache seems to be surviving ok as long as it's put back properly in such a way the lid doesn't seperate from the container.

TNLN , TFTC , Cheers.

Hiking the West Ridge with Pacman, Mudbrick and Ahomburg.

Loving the views - does it get any better? The ridge did get narrower, and more slippery.

Loved it. I wish the High Country were closer to home.

*16/04/2016, Found @ 4:58 PM, Find # 5273.*

After an awesome morning and a bit of a search for for something else in the middle of the day, it was now time to head for the summit before it got dark.
After reaching the summit, I decided that I needed to continue on a bit further as this one wasn't that far away.
As I was approaching the GPSr was the counting down the metres but as I was look forward, I seemed to be running out of ground. I arrived at what seemed to be the edge, looked around and spotted where I suspected the cache would be.
I carefully made my way to that spot and the cache was soon located.

**Thanks to Derringer for placing this cache.**

This one was found with Ahomberg, The Pacmman, & Jacko83 during our walk down the west ridge. The views are superb, thank you Derringer for the cache, & profuse apologies for the very late log

During a great weekend at Mt Buller myself, Ahomburg, Mudbrick and Jacko83 set off for an afternoon hike along the West Ridge.
We took the steps required to get to the cache, but fortunately not one step beyond that Smile.
Thanks, Derringer - the views here are amazing.

Fantastic view, but watch your step. A family followed me all the way out along the ridge so I introduced them to Geocaching. They were so interested I let the kids sign the log. Thanks Derringer - I never knew there was a track along here.

What's that I hear you say? Always wear a hat and sunscreen at this altitude.
Hmm, that could be why i'm a bit pinker than when I started out.
Let that be a lesson for you.
Meanwhile, back at the cache...
The snaplocks have snapped off the lid, but not to worry!
The lid sits firmly against the surface of the rock that forms the roof of the hide and the cache should remain sealed and dry where it is.
Thanks for the adventure.
Noted sign at the trail head that said DANGER, extremely steep slopes beyond this point. A fall may result in DEATH. I lived.

I enjoyed my hike out along the West Ridge today. It was a magnificent day with the usual spectacular views. I grabbed the ones west of this first before returning via this one. The GPS lead me directly to the cache, which was found easily. Once I had signed the log and visited some trackables I sat and enjoyed the views. Thank you so much Deringer for bringing me here to this spot. Awesome, a favourite!

Really enjoyed the walk out to this one before tackling the ridge. It does seem that every step will find you falling down a cliff face, and it pays to watch your steps being careful not to trip.

#331 8th of 10 finds on Mt Buller this afternoon. One member of Team BGF climbed the spectacular west face of Mt Buller about 12 months ago. Today we started from the car park at the end of Summit Road, but enjoyed the walk in the early evening to GZ along the ridge line. A beautiful spot indeed and I'm not sure we would like to venture too much further "beyond". Sat for a while and absorbed in the great views - a favourite spot and cache for us - thanks Derringer.

#5184 A few years back we'd had the pleasure of completing the sister cache, One Step Back, today was the day to go One Step Beyond. The weather was ideal to be walking on the summit and beyond on this first day of summer. After a short search Dad spotted the cache's niche, it was found in very good condition which is testimony to its hide after all these years. As with most of the caches found today, GZ offered a magnificent view of the surrounding region. Heading back up we added a rock to each of the numerous rock cairns (8 or more!) - a great excursion to this side of the summit today. Our thanks to Derringer for the cache, a very enjoyable experience. Cheers [^]

Beautiful spring day with the last of the snow in small patches.

After staying the night at the Alberg we decided to walk to the summit and then one of the kids asked if there were any geocaches around here. We had a look and yes one not too far away.

We pretended we were the fellowship of the ring negotiating a tricky mountain pass. Omg that last bit was hairy. We loved it.

Find # 3014

Plans were made during the week by part of the BWWC to assemble as Team Fruitcake and head to Mount Bogong, but when the weather report said thunderstorms and gail force winds, we changed plans and were headed for Mount Buller instead for hopefully a calmer day. The aim was to climb to the summit via the west face and to pick up a couple of caches for the Victorian 1700m altitude challenge (GC4447V)...

After the fun of placing the movable cache "Keep it Moving" just around the corner, we now headed towards GZ for this one. Our GPSr's led us to within 2 metres, now it was up to us to move around the snow and find the cache. Luckily, I managed to locate it in the second spot I checked, we signed the log and moved on as quick as possible to avoid getting too cold.

Another one on the 1700m challenge list.

Thanks to Derringer for the cache. TNLN

@2.21 PM Cache # 987

[teal] Could we be the only finders of this cache in the mouth of July???? [/teal]

Took the cache page advise and approached This cache from the West ridge track.
Probable not the best weather for that route but loved the challenge and had a ball in the fresh covering of snow. Well it actually started snowing on us not long after setting off at around 1100m
Found with some intrepid members of the BWWC, while on another epic adventure this time ascending the West face of Mount Buller ticking some boxes for this Victorian 1700m+ ASL Challenge cache.

Just on the "spur" of the moment we placed a rare moving cache nearby
Keep it Moving

Thx again Derringer for another memorable adventure

Once at GZ it didn't take Adriaan very long to knock the frozen rock out of the whole to reveal the plastic cache. Fortunately he didn't smash the box. With blazing winds at -4 °C in a veritable snow-storm and 50 km/h wind gust logging was the bigger challenge. One guy holding stuff, another guy providing the pen and the third guy actually logging the book.

Now let's get out of here

Thanks for that

Yet another Derringer cache which has challenged us to take the next step beyond! It was a snowy day up on Mount Buller, sitting at about -2 with a wintery breeze! We took the snowy and icy trail along the knife like ridge to get to GZ, we had our choice of summer or winter, with one side of the mountain snow covered, and the other side completely dry! Will post a picture. Its easy to see why people pick this location for ice climbing!

Thanks for the cache Derringer, and you have earned yet another favorite point from me!

You could say the ilovedrwho is one who definitely doesn't like steep slopes, so her bravery has to be commended in joining me on this one. The route to GZ was fascinating and occasionally a bit of a thrill, taking in some great views of the area. Then once at GZ it got even more exciting so alpha male took the last few metres to retrieve the cache. Glad it wasn't 'one step beyond' that or I think I'd have DNF'd!

Meanwhile the rest of the teams stood back at the summit watching in the distance to make sure we had a safe return, yelling and waving at us out on the edge Smile

TFTC Derringer. Great placement.

Wasn't sure how we'd go with this one, but GeoKeegs found it to be no problem Smile Spectacular scenery. One of our favourite family walks/hikes - ever! GeoHubby was sent to retrieve cache from GZ, while GeoMumma and GeoKeegs stayed up safe. It was interesting to see how many people came and left the summit while we were out along the ridge. Plenty of fingers pointing at us Smile TFTC and a wonderful scenic walk we will never, ever forget!

03-Dec-11
We were up at Mt Buller hosting my nephews bucks turn at our ski club lodge.
While the young bucks went mountain bike riding, I went in search of this cache, one which I had wanted to find for a while but hadn't had the weather or the opportunity previously.
I completed the hike along the roof of the mountain without too much trouble, although the track along the west ridge needs care to be taken, as one false step beyond the next good footfall could send you into a painful and potentially life threatening slide.
The cache was found easily enough but the location is a bit precarious and I was very conscious of not dropping the cache, my GPS or my camera, and had to be very careful.
The morning was sunny and not too cold for the most part, but became quite chilly when a cloud blocked the sun.
The wind was quite fresh and blustery, and I imagine it would be very nasty up here at times. This is a cache where you need to be well prepared, clothed adequately, and aware of what the weather is doing.
BUT it was fantastic, and thanks for placing it.

Found on the 17th september 2011, on Kat n Shay's 22nd Ski n Boozanza birthday celebrations. Not my first find but a scary one to introduce some friends to geocaching! Could be very sketchy in snow, one of the few times a poor snow season can benefit us. Dealing with 100km/h winds we eventually found it after doubting the iPhones gps. Most impressive location I've cached love it Wink

Really easy but a long walk. Saw signs that people died here. I think that's sad. I wonder how fast they went down the hill. TFTC

Saw this one while pre-planning my caching adventures at Mt Buller. This was clearly going to be the highlight. And it was. We have had pretty poor snow but outstanding weather and decided to ditch the skis for our last day and go on an adventure. What is it about 6 year olds and this cache? We walked up from the Summit Rd bus stop and I have to say that lobster6 7 kept up pretty well and didn't complain much at all. Especially once we got to the stairs to the summit. He knew that the adventure was really on. The last little bit pans out a bit easier than it looks. We had wonderful 360views for almost 100km. Took wHoley Suffolk to move it on. A most memorable and fantastic cache which gave me a whole new perspective on Mt Buller and keen to do more hiking in the high country. Thanks Derringer.

JosieY has chronicled this pretty well. The ridge line trek was deliciously exposed and clear skies supplied us with views to Bogong and Feathertop among many peaks. Thanks for drawing me to this spot off the Buller beaten track, at least at this time of year. I'll append some photos.

What a view! Two 6 year olds scrambling down a steep slope. They had a great time.

What an amazing view. TaurusSix went to the top of Mt Buller, just because we were there. Then went for this one. I thought I retrieved a TB, but I didn't have it when I got back to the hotel. So I presume I accidentally left it there.

I enjoyed the walk up to the cache. As I approached GZ, I couldn't actually see it because of the curve of the slope, and I imagined it was going to be very steep. It was steep, but not as bad as I thought, and I didn't have to go much further. Cache was found straight away - just the way I like it. Fantastic views from up there. Thanks for an enjoyable cache.

Set off for GZ from Buller village in thick fog. Got to the summit and the clouds parted and revealed a very rewarding view! The wind was blowing a treat and the temp was around zero but a thoroughly enjoyable walk.

A 4x4 & Walking Solo Adventure - Day 5 of 5 - Cache 12 of 13 Big Grin

Spent a mild wind-free night camped near Craigs Hut where I enjoyed watching the previous evening sunset and the new day sunrise over the distant mountains. The colour changes are just magical and a fitting way to finish off this adventure.

Luckily I enjoyed another near perfect day so tackling this cache on Mt Buller was eagerly anticipated. As per "Derringer's" modus operandi, this one lived up to expectations. It's not one that I would try in winter with a snow and ice covering, coz one slip and the next stop would be Mirimbah. Big Grin I think a Ski Patrol memorial plaque half way along the ridge provides a testament to that approach!

FYI: Parks Vic have blocked the original track around the southern side near the cache. Something about habitat recovery. Access is straight over the ridge and down to the cache. Hang on tight!

Done on a lovely spring day. Indeed it was one step beyond - then one more! I really enjoyed this cache - a good walk to somewhere a little different, great views, good coordinates, and an eminently findable hide. Thanks Derringer.

found at the end of a day of trapping possums, (and rats!) the nearest trapping site just a few hundred m to the south.Looked a bit too steep from the trap site, so I approached it from the summit.Great little walk from the summit with views all around, cache in a brilliant spot but I'm glad it wasn't another few steps!

Finally got up to Buller during summer. Dragged the geo family to the summit for a picnic lunch. While waiting for the kettle to boil entered co-ords into GPS. Could it be out there??? Have never been that far out before. Got close to GZ, could it be down there??? Yes it was thank goodness. Great views, didn't want to take too many more steps.

Walked to the summit and could see where the cache was going to be, so with a band of keen GeoKids we moved onto the cache. A quick find with some breathtaking views as well as drop-offs on the walk to the cache. Left the Brumby TB and Team Firesafe Geocoin #38.

Can see how one step beyond would be one step too far. Found with trusted muggle friends as part of our regular mountain-top New Year's Eve celebrations. All sworn to secrecy. Took Mini Spiragraph, left Karl from the Simpsons. TFTC.

Steep and very scary.....a bit further out the spur than expected.
Pick up GC and tramped back up the hill to the summit.
TFTC. Lovely view.

After help from a map (since it took us a while to figure out how to read the GPS!) we finally found our way across to the cache! Even though we both work up here, it was amazing to get out and take in the views!

We look forward to being able to hide and seek more caches within our "office".

Called again today to drop off Embi coin, it likes nice views!
We picked it up at Feathertop over Easter and decided it had to visit this cache! Hope it doesn't get stuck over winter! Thanks, Derringer.

Great cache! This was the last on the trip around Mt Stirling and then across to this one..... As we started walking across the ridge the mist started rolling in and we couldnt see anything around us except the path we were walking on but we persisted and got to the cache and to our surprise there was a big huntsman spider guarding the cache.

Thanks for bringing us across to MT Buller
