Wow!!! What a view!
And it was so special to share it with just one other. <3 <3
From beyond the summit we had the mountain to ourselves.
With a fairly late start to the morning, catnap777 and I managed to avoid the dreary weather. We still couldn't see too much from the summit carpark, but with the wind trying to blow our jackets off us we knew the cloud cover would come and go quickly. As soon as we headed off the wind was not so fierce and walking up to the summit then along the ridge to GZ, the clouds parted long enough to get a few glimpses of the top of the world and even a pic or two when we were quick enough. Just enough and make our jaws drop and ensure we come back to check it all out again as soon as we can.
Getting our names in this amazing old Derringer cache meant so much to me having snuck my name into the old archived "One Step Back" when I was being shown around Buller as a newbie at my very first grocaching event. [^]
I wonder if I could still find that old ammo can?
TFTC Derringer. A wonderful walk in surreal surroundings that cat' and I will never forget. [^] [^] [^]
Cache and contents found and returned in fair condition. The old container has seen better days but the lid is still held down in its compact hidey hole. [8)]
A Derringer cache on the edge of the world. Loved the walk, view and the experience. How lucky are we who play this game .
Either way, it was a beautiful walk. Stay safe! ️
Bit worried when the GPS still said 100m over off the edge, but it turned out to be not bad at all. Great little spot. Found cache pretty much straight away. Great views as well. TFTC
After finding a spot to camp, we set up and lightened the load in the car, then headed up towards Buller.
After making it to the top of Buller, we headed further along. We finished climbing back up the mountain goat track and then went along the next ridge to this cache. It sure was one step beyond, and a very scary look down revealed a death trap if I slipped. Great views though!
Thanks Derringer for the cache.
Found at 9:11 am on 14/2/20.

That was true for me.
If the steps beyond refer to beyond comfort levels, I'd say this was more like 5-10 steps than one. Sometimes well chosen cache locations have a certain inevitability to them - this was one of them. I could see that it would be just down there, a couple of steps from doom, and I didn't like it. My logical brain told me that given the wind was blowing up the slope, and it wasn't too steep here I would be fine and not even be one step beyond what was sensible. My logical brain won out and I signed the log, but I was glad to return to somewhere slightly less precarious.
Fun track in + a location which challenged me + great views = favourite point. Thanks for the cache.
After a DNF on Mt Stirling yesterday, we were hopeful that today would have more success, or our hopes of completing the challenge would disappear. While some of the family explored the nearby MTB trails, Ma and Pa Kettle and Kettle twin 2 set out for the summit and the possible cache finds for the day. A quick glance at the arrow and we realised where we had to go. Past the sign warning of the imminent danger should we stray from the path which we followed out along the ridge. The closer we got, the more steeply the path dropped away, and it was Pa Kettle who scrambled down the last 20m and made the find.
One down, 14 more to go to complete the challenge. Just love the fantastic views from up here... on a day like today, we were treated to endless mountains… in all directions. Thanks for bring us here.
This is a fairly easy find and walk in the summer/autumn season! I love the view and couldn’t get more of it!

Cheers
Went up the hill
To walk a ridge line goat track
A cache was found,
And a log book signed,
And now to take into the view!
TFTC! this was a magical place.
Great company and great conversation with similar interests.
Could have stayed up and enjoyed this view for ever but the sunscreen would have ran out and ausyowie would have been very late for his commitment.
Anyway we sat for as long as we could and then sadly left the highpoints and headed for the lower grounds.
Thanks for the adventure.
We made the drive from Alexandra to Mount Buller today, and while our goal was to visit the webcam, we couldn't resist walking up the summit and heading over to this on. Being an old school cache, and that I hadn't found a Derringer cache for a while, I couldn't pass up the chance to find it. Found the cache in a well hidden spot, and whilst the cache has some signs of damage, it is holding up OK. A beautiful spot on the back side of Buller, and the views were at their best.
Gratias Derringer.

About this cache:
This one had some really really good views!!! It was a quick and easy find. The lid of the container is broken, but the content was dry as it's under a rock.
Tftc, greetings from Norway
Thank you Derringer
After completing 12 types in a day we decided a short walk was in order and somehow converted this into several of the higher caches on the hill.
After the sheer terror/fun of the nearby cache this was essentially a stroll. The views continued to be awesome! TNLN TFTC
Having seen the COs name from many searches of good caches to do at least we where in the area and headed over. Great views on top and then we started to go over the edge so hoped GZ would be soon and it was. The container is a little worse for wear with the clip locks broken but the contents were good. We completed the signing duties and re hid. TFTC. Some more unloved
Cache is in need of replacing. The clips on the lid are broken. I've put it back so the water shouldn't get in but it was open when I found it. I doubt it will survive the winter snow this way.

The ham sheltered in the shoulder as I made one step beyond. Somehow I attacked this one completely the wrong way, I blame the fog for that. So after I clambered down the hillside in completely the wrong direction, and then along the slope for a good while, eventually I headed in the right direction. Found the triple cairns and the cache (with the arachnid guardian) soon afterwards. Thanks for the treasure
Been a long time since I've found a Derringer cache.
The high country locations they are found never disappoint and this is no different.
What a spectacular view from Gz.
Spent a couple days biking up and around Buller so thought I'd spend at least a few hours today with the hiking boots on and find some of the multitude of caches that have appeared on top of this mountain.
Glad to have found an old and original Derringer cache, reminds me of a time where caches in the high country were scarce. Finding just one or two took some planning and preparation, and when you finally found it there was that great feeling of satisfaction.
Today I spent 2.5 hours finding 5 caches with terrain ratings from 3 to 5, and that was with time spent looking at views, photographing wildflowers along with searching / finding and signing caches.
Guess that's one way to boost difficulty and terrain averages quick. All seems too easy now, almost like a high country power trail.
Cache log is nice and dry but unfortunately all the clips on the container have broken off. The cache seems to be surviving ok as long as it's put back properly in such a way the lid doesn't seperate from the container.
TNLN , TFTC , Cheers.
Loving the views - does it get any better? The ridge did get narrower, and more slippery.
Loved it. I wish the High Country were closer to home.
Cheers
After an awesome morning and a bit of a search for for something else in the middle of the day, it was now time to head for the summit before it got dark.
After reaching the summit, I decided that I needed to continue on a bit further as this one wasn't that far away.
As I was approaching the GPSr was the counting down the metres but as I was look forward, I seemed to be running out of ground. I arrived at what seemed to be the edge, looked around and spotted where I suspected the cache would be.
I carefully made my way to that spot and the cache was soon located.
**Thanks to Derringer for placing this cache.**
We took the steps required to get to the cache, but fortunately not one step beyond that .
Thanks, Derringer - the views here are amazing.
Been keen for a return trip to Mt Buller and as the weather this long weekend was looking to be the best on Sunday so myself and the missus return with the focus on doing the summit caches.
This one as long stared me in the face while I study this map and was please to be able to make the hike along the west ridge today in great conditions. An awesome spot and impressive views thanks for bringing me here today. A favorite[^]

Hmm, that could be why i'm a bit pinker than when I started out.
Let that be a lesson for you.
Meanwhile, back at the cache...
The snaplocks have snapped off the lid, but not to worry!
The lid sits firmly against the surface of the rock that forms the roof of the hide and the cache should remain sealed and dry where it is.
Thanks for the adventure.
Noted sign at the trail head that said DANGER, extremely steep slopes beyond this point. A fall may result in DEATH. I lived.
Great views, and another perfect location for a cache.
Thanks Derringer
After staying the night at the Alberg we decided to walk to the summit and then one of the kids asked if there were any geocaches around here. We had a look and yes one not too far away.
We pretended we were the fellowship of the ring negotiating a tricky mountain pass. Omg that last bit was hairy. We loved it.

Plans were made during the week by part of the BWWC to assemble as Team Fruitcake and head to Mount Bogong, but when the weather report said thunderstorms and gail force winds, we changed plans and were headed for Mount Buller instead for hopefully a calmer day. The aim was to climb to the summit via the west face and to pick up a couple of caches for the Victorian 1700m altitude challenge (GC4447V)...
After the fun of placing the movable cache "Keep it Moving" just around the corner, we now headed towards GZ for this one. Our GPSr's led us to within 2 metres, now it was up to us to move around the snow and find the cache. Luckily, I managed to locate it in the second spot I checked, we signed the log and moved on as quick as possible to avoid getting too cold.
Another one on the 1700m challenge list.
Thanks to Derringer for the cache. TNLN
[teal] Could we be the only finders of this cache in the mouth of July???? [/teal]
Took the cache page advise and approached This cache from the West ridge track.
Probable not the best weather for that route but loved the challenge and had a ball in the fresh covering of snow. Well it actually started snowing on us not long after setting off at around 1100m
Found with some intrepid members of the BWWC, while on another epic adventure this time ascending the West face of Mount Buller ticking some boxes for this Victorian 1700m+ ASL Challenge cache.
Just on the "spur" of the moment we placed a rare moving cache nearby
Keep it Moving
Thx again Derringer for another memorable adventure
[teal] Merci beaucoup
Cheers

Once at GZ it didn't take Adriaan very long to knock the frozen rock out of the whole to reveal the plastic cache. Fortunately he didn't smash the box. With blazing winds at -4 °C in a veritable snow-storm and 50 km/h wind gust logging was the bigger challenge. One guy holding stuff, another guy providing the pen and the third guy actually logging the book.
Now let's get out of here
Thanks for that

My phone was also spazzing out along the way so we went to the rock piles and watched the sunset.
For derring us to take that extra one step beyond.

Thanks for the cache Derringer, and you have earned yet another favorite point from me!
Jonti.
A couple of months back I walked up the west face and today I started having flashbacks.
God's country, but its hard work walking.
Cache in good order.

we headed to mt buller for siteseeing and caching.
this was our last one for the day.( 8 out of
we left the rest of the team at the summit.
and happy chappies and myself bravely headed out.
thanks Derringer.
a very scary one. [:x]
Meanwhile the rest of the teams stood back at the summit watching in the distance to make sure we had a safe return, yelling and waving at us out on the edge
TFTC Derringer. Great placement.
While the young bucks went mountain bike riding, I went in search of this cache, one which I had wanted to find for a while but hadn't had the weather or the opportunity previously.
I completed the hike along the roof of the mountain without too much trouble, although the track along the west ridge needs care to be taken, as one false step beyond the next good footfall could send you into a painful and potentially life threatening slide.
The cache was found easily enough but the location is a bit precarious and I was very conscious of not dropping the cache, my GPS or my camera, and had to be very careful.
The morning was sunny and not too cold for the most part, but became quite chilly when a cloud blocked the sun.
The wind was quite fresh and blustery, and I imagine it would be very nasty up here at times. This is a cache where you need to be well prepared, clothed adequately, and aware of what the weather is doing.
BUT it was fantastic, and thanks for placing it.

Spent a mild wind-free night camped near Craigs Hut where I enjoyed watching the previous evening sunset and the new day sunrise over the distant mountains. The colour changes are just magical and a fitting way to finish off this adventure.
Luckily I enjoyed another near perfect day so tackling this cache on Mt Buller was eagerly anticipated. As per "Derringer's" modus operandi, this one lived up to expectations. It's not one that I would try in winter with a snow and ice covering, coz one slip and the next stop would be Mirimbah. I think a Ski Patrol memorial plaque half way along the ridge provides a testament to that approach!
FYI: Parks Vic have blocked the original track around the southern side near the cache. Something about habitat recovery. Access is straight over the ridge and down to the cache. Hang on tight!

We picked it up at Feathertop over Easter and decided it had to visit this cache! Hope it doesn't get stuck over winter! Thanks, Derringer.
Great cache! This was the last on the trip around Mt Stirling and then across to this one..... As we started walking across the ridge the mist started rolling in and we couldnt see anything around us except the path we were walking on but we persisted and got to the cache and to our surprise there was a big huntsman spider guarding the cache.
Thanks for bringing us across to MT Buller
