Are you late loggers posting your donation receipts? or just going for the point?

01-Jan-06
We inadvertantly neglected to post a copy of our GA0001 entry. Yes we know it is a late posting!

"We donated on more than one occasion to the Red Cross in relation to the Tsunami Appeals. Can't find the receipts....
Donated to a few other local charities also. A great cause to help relieve the problems now being faced there."

And have continued to help in the aftermath also...

Thanks to Leeks employer who mached his $2000 donation.

That takes the grand total raised by this cache to $ 11,901.21.

Not a bad effort.

Thanks to all that donated..

19-Jan-05
May the world learn to help one another. My donation was made to Heifer International. I found out about this organization when a friend gave to me a gift of a "Flock of Chicks" in memory of a lost one. It is a great mission to give the gift that keeps giving life to so many.

17-Jan-05
Already donated a fair amount for me to redcross, but more always helps.

One of the great things about redcross, is that it is rated one of the best charities that gives a large percentage of all donations to the intended charity.

11-Jan-05
Piggy this cache subtley poked my conscience. It could have been us. It could have been you.

I hope you go on to collect a million.

Thought of contacting Packer?

11-Jan-05
Glad to be able to help out a little bit.

10-Jan-05
UPDATE. As of Jan 10th 2005, 10.23 am (GMT + 10) the balnce of the appeal is sitting at: $9631.21.

Thanks to all that have donated.

10-Jan-05
This donation was actually made on my behalf, by Hydee, out of her own pocket. She said that it was made because of my passion for supporting this cache and the cause it stood for.

Thanks Hydee

10-Jan-05
I am pleased to log a find on this cache, if for no other reason than it might annoy some of the people watching this cache. I am also happy to log a find on this cache, because I probably wouldn't have made a donation to the Tsunami Appeal otherwise. That's one of the reasons the cache was set up wasn't it: To prompt people to make donations that may not have made them otherwise?

Thanks Team Piggy for making it possible. My receipt is duly attached to this log.

10-Jan-05
Chookie decided to have a quick look at this cache. She only wanted to say a big "Well Done" to Team Piggie for raising so much money to help the people devastated by the tsunami.

08-Jan-05
Changed from "Found" to "Note" because apparently some people are whinging about it. There's a receipt number, but no scan because the receipt is at work, and I am on 2 weeks' holidays. That's not good enough for anal people, fine. Its now a note and not a find. Like I give a sh*t if I have 1 less find. Hardly the most important thing in life. No wonder cachers get "geek" reputations.

--------
Not interested in bitching and arguing about appropriateness of this cache, just interested in encouraging people to donate.
$100 to Australian Red Cross (receipt no. 205109), despite their dodgy history and Bali Appeal screwup I believe they're OK now.

Donation made to Australian Red Cross a couple of days ago. Receipt is attached and shown in log. Well done Team Piggy.

08-Jan-05

Have just called in at the post office and made a small donation ($50), have a receipt, but don't have a scanner at home, so will scan and upload after 17th January when I'm back at work.

Piggy this is a great idea, ignore the critics, it appears you have the full support of the Australian caching community. Well done to you, to all those who have donated and supported.

Ah, what have we humans come to?

People are dead. People are dying. People have lost everything. Children have lost parents. Millions are homeless. A world disaster and some people are whining that it is not in the rules to do this type of cache, whose only goal was to help people who need help.

The creation of this cache and the response of the world donations have shown that the world is full of wonderful, thoughtful, caring people.

The Archiving of this cache has shown that there are a few out there that only care about themselves.

I had donated money before this cache had come up but after seeing what others in the geocaching world were doing to help, I donated more. I did not care about the happy face. I now want to get rid of the happy face.

It is true that in geocaching we need rules and guidelines to go by and keep the game from going all over the place, but as the rules show, Groundspeak may approve caches outside the rules if they so choose (and why not, they created the rules). We have had a world disaster and Team Piggy came up with a great idea to help out the people in need by starting a cache to help raise money for those hurt
by the Tsunami. It was approved as it should have been. More money has been raised for the people in need. And now a stop has been put on it by those that are too self centered then to see the needs of others.

I feel sad about this.

I will make another donation for the amount of what I pay for my Premium membership, because after this I will no longer renew my membership to Groundspeak.

Thank you Team Piggy and all the other geocachers that helped make this cache so great.

07-Jan-05
Donated $50 which was matched by my employer to make $100 to the cause. Shame this has been archived.

Hmmm. Not the first temporarily unavailable cache I've found. That honour goes to Abandoned Armour.

In that case I found what others couldn't. In this case I just plain disagree with the reason it was made unavailable. If this invalidates the "find" then so be it. Strip me of a cache find. Gee, I'll be upset.

I can't believe the narrow minded, pedantic opinions that had this one junked. I deal with illness, misery, fear and sometimes death on a day to day basis at work on an extremely macro scale compared with what has happened over there. I do my job to help others. I donated to help others. I couldn't give a flying fig about getting a find out of it.

I log this more as a statement of support for Team Piggy than anything else. I think this was a novel idea which might have encouraged a few people to do sooner rather than later that which they would have done anyway. I haven't really looked hard but I haven't seen too many $2 swaps on this one. Do you really think that if they weren't already intending to or hadn't already done so, that people would really give so generously to achieve a find.

To the critics, dig deep & think about your life and what it's worth and what others have lost. Then think about a cache find by comparison, and whether you think anyone overseas who really needs the money donated by those who have logged or noted this really cares whether they claimed a find or not?

Maybe even consider whether they would think that your efforts in discouragement of this cache are a worthwhile waste of valuable time.

Donated $100 to the Red Cross with more to come.

Logged this as I also object to Groundspeaks opinion. Once in a lifetime events deserve the opportunity to break the rules, surely 200000 dead certainly breaks the rules, and some of them are sureely geocachers..

Well as the UN stated STINGY.... both in asssistance as well as financial aid.

Seem the rules are different with home soil events.

Premium membership and ALL geocaching financial support STOPPED...

Dear Mr Greg M........

We donated $25 to the red cross. I was going to say that if you can get a smiley for trashing out you should be able to get one for something special like this, but then again they stopped approving caches your shouldn't have to leave the house for.

Just converted some email cash points into a donation also $22.69.
Thank you!

This is to confirm your donation of $22 to charity through EmailCash. We thank you for your support on behalf of the charity you donated to.

Please note that this is not an official receipt confirming your donation for taxation purposes. As your EmailCash rewards are not taxable your donation of cash is not tax-deductible.

Once again thank you for your donation.

Just a reminder people, those that feel the need to log a FIND, need to make sure they have their receipt posted please.

We dont want to give the wowsers on the forums something new to pick to death in the forums do we>?
Thanks for your donations..

I donated $20 to the Red Cross two days ago (their regional Birmingham office is across the hall from my office), and an additional donation will be made on payday. Will be glad to fwd the receipt for proof if necessary. Glad to see some other donors out there.

FYI, that day was a big scare for me. I have a German penpal who is stationed in Khao Lak, Thailand. She works in tourism, and is at the beachfront hotels almost every day. Thank God the day of the disaster was her one day off and she took a hike to see a temple. She lost many friends and co-workers, and at least 50% or more of the hotel guests are missing or killed. Terrible, terrible tragedy.

Edit: this is the receipt from the second donation. Handango (palm pilot software) matched my donation dollar for dollar.

SHAME ON YOU Groundspeak!!!

It's a very sad day when the guidelines can't be bent a little to help more than 5,000,000 people...

Leek - An ex-premium member...

06-Jan-05
It was THIS cache which finally motivated me to donate. The cache had a POSITIVE effect towards the relief affort.

I am ASHAMED and ANGRY that Groundspeak has archived this cache. The whole world is getting off its collective backside and DOING SOMETHING to help. You do nothing, in fact you hinder other people's efforts.

Many popular web sites including search engines have prominent links to the various agencies that are helping with this disaster.

Google is not a charity organisation but has a link to the relief effort on its main search page. Same with Yahoo. And PayPal and eBay and many other prominent web addresses.

Don't hide behind some arbitrary and petty rule. Sometimes rules are meant to be broken. Don't be STINGY at a time like this. If you are going to disallow this cache then the least you could do is follow the lead of many other worthy web sites and put a "Relief" button link in your left navigation bar as a community service to the world. I don't understand why you didn't do this in the first place! Surely that is not breaking any of your rules?

06-Jan-05
It seems that Groundspeak don't even want to talk about the Asian Tsunami Disaster either. A couple of days after it all happened, I left a topic in the Groundspeak forums, simply asking people to donate if they can. Soon after, my topic was dumped off the site. I received a reply stating that the message was "Off Topic" and if I paid $30 to be a premium member I could leave it in an off topic forum that is only open to premium members.

How callous is that! I truly think the owners of this site have a chip on their shoulder that needs surgical removal if possible.

We have donated sums of money to the appeal and encourage all others to do the same if you haven't already.

Thanks Hog for trying and encouraging people to do the right thing anyway.

06-Jan-05
Well, even if archived, I'm going to log it!

Mrs Bull was on-call over the holiday season, and received 5 calls to work - all Tsunami related. So we have donated the money earned - $1500 - to the Red Cross appeal. Will add the receipt later.

06-Jan-05
It's not about the smiley - but without the cache, I probably wouldn't have donated yet.

$50 to Care Australia.

Hadn't got around to making a donation yet. This cache give me the required kick in the pants.

Also waiting to see what Scouts Australia comes up with.

"Thank you. Your order has been saved.

Also there is an amount of $90 something dollars sitting in a container at work, this money was raised in a raffle at the SA Cachers get-together last June for another cause which does not seem neccesary now. Unless someone objects strenuously in the next 12 hours I shall hand that cash to Red Cross tomorrow.

Mary & David congratulate Team Piggy on setting up this cache in such a worthy cause. We are delighted to contribute.

This entry changed to a note after criticism from US-based cachers as to the motives of people donating to this worthy cause. Apparently it's ok to have caches supporting US disasters (see GC1C90) but not if it is somewhere outside the US, no matter that this disaster is on an unprecedented scale. Oh the hypocrisy! Shame on those with such double standards.

I am so glad that I could help this cause. I hope that many more cachers will want to give as well.

I have a PayPal account in USA and PayPal.com are supporting UNICEF. There are countless children affected by this disaster and UNICEF is there to help them as much as possible.

As I was watching more reports of the disaster on TV tonight, I looked around and saw my family... safe. How could I not help? I feel so lucky to be in a position to help. It is a privilage!

I have attached an image of my PayPal donation to UNICEF.

I knew there was a good reason I do all of those online surveys and the like. I immediately cashed in all of my emailcash.com.au points and donated them to the Australian Red Cross who is one of their charities.

Great idea Team Piggy!

05-Jan-05
In keeping with Groundspeak’s policy of not permitting charity caches or caches that promote agendas or platforms, effective immediately, the two caches created recently for the purpose of collecting money for Tsunami/Earth quake victims have been archived.

Our hearts go out to the victims of this terrible tragedy. However, although we understand that these caches were created with the best of intentions; the uproar from within the community regarding these caches has reinforced our position.

Questions like, “Why can’t I do a cache for my charity?” or “I don't like this organization, why can’t we create a Tsunami cache for a different organization” make a couple of things clear.

First, we do not want to have to admit/deny caches based upon our perceived merits of the specific agenda, position, organization or charitable cause. Most opinions vary when it comes to issues like these and we have no interest in hosting the battleground or becoming an arbiter.

Second, this web site is about geocaching and we do not wish to see it converted to a platform for issues, whether good, bad or otherwise.

There are plenty of ways to donate to charity and plenty of ways to help out. We encourage you to find them and participate to the extent you believe it is right. We certainly do.

Now, I realize that this post and action will most likely cause another uproar. Personally, I am sorry that we did not enforce this guideline sooner. The blame for this lies solely with Groundspeak and not the volunteers. As far as this web site is concerned, we plan to do our best to keep it related to geocaching and we hope you like it.

Sincerely,

Rothstafari

I haven't logged a real cache in a long while due to laziness and various other excuses, but I simply had to respond to this one...

This is one of the most tragic events in my lifetime and while I feel like going over there (somewhere) to help, I think that donating cash to the professionals is the best thing we can do at the moment...

2 minutes silence please...

More than happy to throw a few more dollars to a worthy cause ... and bah humbug to all those who disputed the value of creating a 'cache' for the purpose. Well done Piggy.

Being away travelling I missed seeing pictures of this story until I returned home. Not much TV in the Vic High Country. But the ABC kept updating the situation through the cricket coverage letting me know just how bad it was.

I decided to donate through Care Australia, being a non political, non religous fund that actually seems to get most of the money to the cause rather than admin costs. Unluckily it seems they only mail receipts but received the following confirmation for my $50 from this page.

Good work Team Piggy! May your target be small compared to the total donated.

Apparently, some of our fellow cachers may have e-mailed Team Piggy to complain that geocaches should not be used to promote particular causes or agendas...

If this is true then I think that is taking political correctness to an extreme that I don't want to visit...

This cache aims to raise money for men, women & children whose lives have been totally devastated by one of the most significant human tragedies in living memory.

If the geocaching community cannot flex the site rules for this unique event, then I for one do not wish to be part of it...

Sad... very sad...

Mrs Riblit has family in Malaysia, including a niece in Penang. Thankfully she wasn't effected however we are happy to donate again.

We cannot imagine the scale of what is going on over there and hope that our donation will be of some assistance.

I have recieved some flak over this cache, so be it..

This cache was created with one purpose in my mind, to help the victims of this disaster.
I read the rules and then created it.
It is for a non profit orginisation, and Yes it is very borderline on solicitation, so I followed the rules and asked the Mods, in both Aust & the US for direction.
I thank Geo.com for finally granting approval for this cache, and also possibly for them having "slightly" flexed the rule book in this case.
I do not however want anyone to think that because this one made it through, that they can create a cache which breaks the rules and expect it to get by.
If anyone plans on using this cache as a stepping stone to argue other caches, I will remove this one without thought.

As a note, this was probably a tough decision for the approvers to let this cache through.
And another 70,000 people where declared dead whislt this took place..
Yes, 70,000, So please don't try telling me that this cache is wrong..

Thanks Geo.com and Aust approvers and all that are donating.
God Bless.

I have donated to the Red Cross and have been prompted to do so because of this cache.

I am however not claiming a find as I believe the act of donating requires that you don't receive anything in return (or that becomes solicitation). A "find" on a cache is something in return.

Great idea piggy and I hope you exceed the 10K.

Another late entry but only realised the cache existed. The current issues in Burma and China bring this back to the fore.
