Believe it or not this cache is still there (but archived!)

02-Nov-14
Time to end this one Actually meant to do it some time back .

01-Nov-14
Where looking at attempting this one until reading the logs, looks like this needs attention!

17-May-14
Drove to GZ entrance, and security fence is still up and not looking like much is changing in a hurry.
From the looks of things the area might be permanently blocked off

19-Feb-14
Had some tools that might have enabled me to retrieve this today however the path down is still currently fenced off Sad

22-Sep-13
We went to scout out this cache location today, but unfortunately the closest access to this location has been fenced off due to some dangerous rocks slipping and falling. Sad

22-Sep-13
The search for this cache formed part of another Vamber/KiwiFruitsNZ geocaching adventure - this time in Devonport.

Unfortunately couldn't access this one - from either of the two locations visited - primarily due to maintenance at the first, and a steep cliff at the second!

17-Nov-12
Wow... this one was intense.

Well, I don't think common sense prevailed today... I instead decided that I could make an attempt at this... well, if I was a little taller, it would have been easy... but like this, it was just a little hard to entirely reach the cache. I mean, at first I was very nearly almost there, but then I had to leave y safe perch, and sorta try get the cache. Luckily it was done!! (Everyone used to call me a monkey in primary school... )

And I managed to quickly sign the log before my legs got too tired, dropped my pen onto the path, and then quickly stretched back up to return the cache. Took 3 attempts to get it back, but then I did... and I just rested in my safe spot for a bit before shuffling back down to the ground.

I do really think that the terrain rating needs to be upped though, I didn't even read the description initially, and just thought terrain 2, and so was a bit surprised to see cache where it is!!

Great fun though.

TFTC!! Smile

I was in the area to pick up some books and thought I would check it out and see what sort of tools were needed. After examination, I thought I could do it very carefully without assistance. So up I went and grabbed it. Nice walkway coming right down to the water at high tide, Smile TFTC

17-Mar-12
Out with the Future Finder this afternoon to enjoy some beaches and grab a few caches. I wasn't expecting to be able to sign the log on this one today, but was keen to recce GZ. Spotted the cache no trouble. Locked climbable so I had a go. Towards the upper limit of my personal comfort zone without a safety buddy. Still, cache was secured, signed and return with minimal risk. Popped down to check out the beach below. Cheers for the adventure!

Our last cache for the day. Perfect spot for a cache. Thanks for bringing us there. TFTC

26-Jun-11
The start of a wonderful day. We (together with dh1saj) want to go for the 7+ challenge cache today. So off we go.
This was our Letter hybrid cache. Although I don't think this cache was at the place where it was in the past. If I look at the pictures Sad It was a bit pitty, cause we did have the right equipment in the car (did a tree one yesterday).
We still did use our gear, to protect a nasty fall.

26-Jun-11
#4 on our way to the 7+ a day challenge.
Even claimed in the listing, it was a bit surprising that a T2 would require tools for access. We (MarMis and me) found it after a few minutes of searching and it seems that it has been replaced recently - pictures in previous logs show a different situation.
However, accessing the box without anything might have been possible, but a bit too dangerous as it was quite slippery up there. So we used some climbing gear which was surprisingly found in the boot of the car....Wink

#2563

Found on our labourous caching weekend in Auckland.

TNLN TFTC!! Big GrinBig Grin

Great concept, found a usable tool of the trade but had difficulty replacing,
might be wise to check on it to make sure it wont fall down in windy weather.

As others have said easy to see not so easy to retrieve. As last log states cache was certainly sitting near edge of cliff and well under tree braches. By chance on my way to climbing centre so ended up strapping myself in and went for a ride, what fun, glad only friends around to see. Cache contents in good condition. No stamp as previously mentioned, dropped in GC. Placed cache higher up hill but upon leaving we were stunned to notice it had already slipped back to similar place as were we found it.

16-May-10
Attempted this one with KiwiLeon as he had done this one before. went to GZ and searched. KiwiLeon was convinced he remembered where it was. Decided to walk down from GZ and spotted the cache balancing precariously close to the edge of the cliff. No way of reaching it were it is currently sitting. Appears to have slid down the hill. Might be worth a visit to check on this one. I will be back once maintenance done. TFTC

The lid is cracked. Contents is still dry for the moment.

Stamp is missing

I found it easier to retrieve than to find - I worked out from the description where it should be, and spotted a cache-like object. Retrieved it making do with the tools I had on hand, only to find it wasn't the cache.

Another hunt revealed the actual cache, which, as I'd already practised, was easy to retrieve.

Had a problem getting the cache back; the retrieval technique didn't work in reverse. Will be adding a couple more tools to my toolkit as a result of the cache.

27-Mar-10
Picked up by default today as a group of us were passing by in kayaks. I was going to make a rope exercise of it with the kids but could not resist the pick up today with petesnz

20-Mar-10
Finding the cache: Easy. Retrieving the cache: Tricky. Replacing the cache: almost impossible. Finally manged to get it back in the same place after what seemed to be an age, and a couple of bottom of the hill collections!! Thanks.

Going home to get the right equipment and returning would have taken at least four days of travelling and approx. 40000 km, so we had to improvise. Using our Swiss Army Knife, a Leatherman Multitool and natures ressources we were able to quickly get to and replace the cache. However we didn't find a stamp inside? TYFTC

24-Oct-09
had fun with this one. loved it. hopefully more will pop up TFTC

29-Aug-09
oh so very clever! we thought we'd have a look & bring the right equipment next time but someone had been clearing the beach of rubbish & had dug the perfect item out of the sea by the look of it. We borrowed, used & returned to its place by bin (considered leaving it at another waymark for future cachers but it seemed against the trash out policy - I still think a lost opportunity...) TFTC and imagination!

Out with the biggest Welsh kid who we have called MacGyver for the last 20 years. Amazing what you can find in the bush to adapt to your needs. TFTC and the challenge.

08-Jul-09
Went and grabbed a friend who lives nearby and the piece of equipment I thought I would need. Once the cache was spotted I realised I had the wrong piece of equipment. I saw something that looked like it would work and returned with the implement only to find the cache in hand via the foolhardy and dangerous route. The foolhardy ex-hippie had obviously been overtaken by the thrill of finding his first cache. All returned safetly. TFTC.

07-Jun-09
We went prepared with some equipment that was only just long enough to reach the cache if you are balancing on the nearby construction - wow it's a long way down Surprised. Had cache in hand in just a few minutes however spent the next 40 minutes trying to return it to it's home. Ended up using some emergency geocaching gear (#8 wire) from the boot of the car and unfortunately it became best friends with the cache and so has remained attached Smile. Thanks for a very different and challenging excercise - just glad we lived to log the visit Big Grin Dropped off a TB - interesting place for a fish to be Surprised T4TC.

08-May-09
After hunting around in the wrong spot, decided to head home. However luck must of been on my side, as I saw it just as I was leaving. After a quick discussion with my fellow geocacher, we decided to take the 'foolhardy' way. Retrieved with no problems, but would not recommend that way to anybody. Primo cache!

10-Mar-09
Rala just got some abseiling gear for her birthday, and we always wanted to retrieve this cache in the unusual way as demonstrated by Beauty & The Beast, Tofska and Hairy Little Dwarf. So together with our friends from Germany (very adept in Abseiling and climbing stuff), we visited the place and prepared everything. We were surprised to find the cache nat at the place where we had seen it last - way up higher and nearly in reach from the path. So we moved it back down again. Because of all the excitement in retrieving the cache that way, we nearly forgot to log. Afterwards, Rala (and some brittle little parts of the cliff) made it safely to the ground.
TNLNSL, TFTC and the excercise

Thanks to Rala's adventurous streak we were part of the support crew for retrieving this cache. Even though we assisted as well as we could nothing dramatical happened to Rala or the cache.

Found today with KiwiLeon. Wasn't quite sure my tool was long enough (fnarr fnarr) but did the job OK. Left cache just slightly better placed for the next finder. Cool idea. T4TC

We didn't expect to get this one today. Were just coming for a look and intended to return with "equipment". But unexpectedly found the perfect tool nearby.
Mum HATED this one! Those stairs were just too high up. We were rather horrified to read the logbook and hear about kids climbing over the guard rails to retrieve!

#85 - a busy first month - we're hooked!

22-Jan-09
Found this cache with coolkiwi3 and cheekykea5. It was further up the hill than we expected it to be from the clue. It was lying out in the open and we left it where we found it because we didn't know its correct place. Cool idea though.

21-Jan-09
cool spot.I have never been here before.the cache is probably not in its proper place because it is just lying there for everybody to see.T4TCSLTNLN

15-Jan-09
cool find don't no why anyone would climb down cliff though as it is amazingly simple to just use a stick!!

15-Jan-09
Found this one with Bumble B.
We looked around for a bit but no luck, but then on the way back up the steps I spotted it out of the corner of my eye. We decided not climb out there (you know with the cliff face and all) so we managed to retrieve it with a stick. We replaced pretty much exactly as found too! This is one of the best caches I've found yet, although I haven't found particularly many...

It´s unbelievable how many "hours" we spent there just only to spot this cache!!! We just wanted to stop there and have a look around, but searching definitely caught up with us and it was a question of reputation to just see the cache.. after 1,5 hours we finaly saw it and to take it out was only 20 sec, no equipment.. Thanks a lot, our 1st letterbox! TNLN

21-Oct-08
Took longer to find the cache than to retrieve it. Nice spot with some amazing views. TFTC

19-Sep-08
On my first visit I could see it but couldn't get it. Went again and found I had forgetten a tool to make the extraction easier. However after scrambling round the bush a bit I found what I needed and eventually the cache was in hand. Only problem was after placing it back I managed to get stuck in the gap in the staircase, took me a further 10 minutes to extract myself from my predicament. A lot of fun and almost very embarrassing. Thanks heaps.

Great concept, found just as we were about to give up (not where we expected).
Cache was just sitting there? not hidden at all. Replaced exactly as found.
Did this with skatelong, no equipment, so he risked it.

The combination of knitting, V8 supporting and Nordic walking.... plus duct tape... all came together.
BUT only after 10 minutes of visually searching and about to give up. Cache was not where we last spied it... suspect some of the cliff has crumbled a bit.
Well camoflagued. Retrieved and logged. Then three (yes - 3) attempts to return it to a safe posse. Including two more retrievals after it rolled down.
Great fun.

Visiting from the UK and this was our first Geocache find in New Zealand! We decided a caching walk in the area would be a good way to keep us awake today, as we were feeling very jet-lagged. We didn't have any special equipment with us, so Chris offered to be our trained monkey and went scrambling. Great locations and excellent cache. SL. TFTC.

Also logging in and out our England Geocoin.

Brought along a little bag of bits and pieces I thought might come in handy and managed to locally source the one thing I didn't have, and cache was extracted (and replaced) no problem at all.
An interesting concept and good challenge.

Well, actually, I did find it.... was in the area, saw this pop up, but had not done the prep.
So grabbed the only tool I had, (RadioNut) but that was not suitable for retrieval though.
Enjoyed the concept, the workout back to the car also.
Another fun cache!

Off to the shore to meet up with the sww family with suitably fashioned tool to extract the cache. Checked GZ out a few months ago, but couldn’t see it, found out later that it had been muggled.

13-Aug-07
After months of trying I finally got this cache, hooray. Have been hindered by inadequate tools for the job, storm damage to the track, high tides, cache went missing for a while before being replaced etc...

So happy to have got this one at last. Very well hidden. I was well and truly muggled trying to replace it. I don't want to say too much for fear of giving away clues as to its location but at 8 months pregnant I must have looked a right sight trying to replace it with my hand made tool!

22-Jul-07
This was our 2nd attempt at this cache. We initially came in April, sighted the cache, but didn't have anything like the correct equipment for retrieval.

So today we came back with the appropriate 'tools' But when we reached the top of the walkway it looked like it had been closed off due to storm damage, as a nearby tree was looking very sorry for itself. This, however didn't deter us and we eventually managed to get our sweaty hands on the goods. Yay!

This is probably the only cache that we had greater difficulty replacing the cache than getting it in the first place....!

TFTC - Great fun

03-Jul-07
Found it with co-worker at lunch time, very cunningly hidden, could hardly see it,did the retrieval ok,but when we thought it thru, decided that it was better to take the cache home & return in the morning with better equipment to replace cache. Just in case someone else was trying to do this one today we dazzle sprayed a note on the cliff advising same!!! (nah, just kidding)
Thanks for the work put into making this ingeneous cache, enjoyed it--TNLNSL

Went and checked cache today but getting a bit dark couldnt see it so left another but possibly there are 2 there now!

I will disable this until I can check and /or replace. Will be a week or so.

31-May-07
Had another look to see what sort of retrieval gear might be suitable. Could not see it any more. Gr8dad may be right: has it slipped???

06-May-07
Got to gz and spent 30 mins looking, but could not see anything. The kids loved the friendly cat - that almost came home with us!!
There were signs of recent erosion and slips close to the stairs. Not sure if that is where the cache is surpose to be??

1 Feb '7: Not found: Must come back with my better pair of eyes..

17 Feb '7: Paddled past in our kayak and better pair of eyes spotted the thing within 5 minutes. And I thought I only had a 'reading glasses' problem. Now we have to design the right 'retrieval gear' and come back again some time.

Did somebody say dangerous and foolhardy? Count me in. No doubt Liz will edit this cache log and make various referances to stupidity & stubborness but it was just so close.

We had deduced while sitting at home from the cache name how to retrevie the cache and where it might be hidden and we arrived armed with what we thought was the right equipment. The equipment we had all fitted in my pocket so upon sighting the cache had to rethink the plan of attack. As it was there was not a lot of thought and rather more attack.

Enoyed the walk along the beach afterwards. Just one question, why is there a large pile of rusty sttel beams a few hundred meters along te beach piled up against the cliff face.

Didn't see the container - sure it's there though.
Fantastic spot.

27-Aug-06
Finally, success! Thanks to the rigging of Beauty & the Beast, we managed to snatch this one (and this time, there were no cats around to distract Hopeful #2's attention). We had to explain to quite a few Muggles that we were "cleaning up the bank" and hopefully, with the odd assortment of gear we had with us, they just thought that we were very dedicated garbage collectors! Razz

12-Aug-06
There with the grandchildren, so multi tasking! Fairly sub standard equipment was discovered locally to avoid a revisit. Bit of a tricky one, needed the clue. Had a fair bit of drama trying to put it back. What a great place but boy are the rocks slippery! TFTC

31-Jul-06
Braved the wet elements and searched the terrain high and low but couldn't see any sign of a "semi-exposed" container. We even had a little friend aid us in the search. Unfortunately, we didn't have the help of the 2nd clue as we hadn't printed out the page it was on *doh*!Decided not to risk our lives today...maybe another day! Will be back.

A quick visit to check this one out. Very impressive site, and it is now clear what tools will be required. We will return ...

went to do it yesterday but did'nt find it even after climbing on the side of cliff face. came back today and saw a guy with some poles leaving so my hopes were high. so when i got there i started looking. not long after i saw it. i climbed over the stairs and when down the cliff face and got it. there was no pen or stamp inside. when i went to put it back it fell down the cliff. no damage done.
white jeep came for a look. tftc.

05-Jun-06
Went for a look and we were seriously impressed. However the blurb does say that it is semi hidden and try as we might we couldn't see it. As it has been raining, is there any possiblity that leaves have obscured it from sight? We will be back, but as we live in Christchurch we might be a while. Thanks, Linley and Richard.

18-Mar-06
Found & replaced successfully, although my favourite bungee cord is now stuck on the side of the cliff.Red Face I'll try to retrieve it tomorrow. Hid myself quite well from nearby muggle family until cache rolled down cliff. No damage, Navigull. The kids, of course, wanted to know what was in it, so I asked them if they had a gps & told them about geocaching. They left to get their grandfather's gps and start caching!

Visited it with Coldstream who had already done this one and we were doing a couple of others in the near vicinity that neither of us had done. He gave me a slight push in the direction of what to take with me, though there's a clue in the title.

He assisted me in the retrieval as my tools did need to have three hands.

The position of the cache (lying on its side) made it a little difficult to make a docking but was successful in the end.

Second visit to this one. In fact on our the first visit, the geocache was upside down, so we weren't not 100% what tool Navigull was on about, anyways, we decided then that we'll take the unconventional approach. Unfortunately HLD & M@ visited the cache using the same "approach" before us!!! Anyways, we took some pics and there were no muggles at the time of our visit, (luckily, we didn't really have a good excuse!!!). Thanks for the cache.

When I came to do the initial reccy, I could see that I would not be able to resist doing this the hard way! I had all the equipment - except for a rope. I knew from previous ramblings that the dwarf might be a likely source - and luck did have it Big Grin. So we organised a rendezvous and rigged up for an abseil. I went down first to get the cache (and clear the way [B)]), followed by HLD to put it back. See HLD's log for the pics.
It was great to finally meet HLD after all this time, even though that would've happened at the gathering tomorrow anyway.
Thanks, Navigull, for providing the opportunity we've been waiting for (even if unintentionally).

Came by here after finding GCMY5P, but there was not enough daylight left and too many mozzies. Came back again today and spotted it after a few minutes... but how to retrieve it? Fortunately I was able to rig up something using bits from my geocaching pack and gear that I usually carry when out caching. It helped having long arms too Smile A nice spot to just sit and take in the view. TNLNSL, thanks!

Excellent camoflage. Once we located it and built our device from things we brought along and other things we found locally it didn't take long to bring it in.
