Just two weeks after coming this way for Mega I'm back again. This time for a meeting for Scouts. I thought I would target this oldie that is one of my middling months placed. I got to a little further than the big totara and reconsidered. The track from over the steam heading upward was rather muddy, so thinking I didn't want to become a statistic I retraced my steps (mostly) and headed back. I wonder what those in the restaurant thought - though I had a raincoat on (bright orange!) I rarely haved the hood up so probably looked like a drowned rat. This is definitely one for towards the end of a dry summer! Thanks for the cache iclaymore!# 4072 8 November 2024 5:23 pm
Tftc!! Cache full of water but log seems intact, just a little damp, emptied out as much water as I couldNice walk up but went through multiple dead ends due to unmaintained track, multiple trees down over the tracks I chose, if you want an easy way up take the outer 4x4 track, for a fun challenge try one of the more central walking ones haha! Tftc! Fun challenge for the day
The difficult part is going through the track. Finding the cache was easy. Thanks for the cache!
In Dunedin to gather some caches for a challenge. Great place first time I have seen the outer covering used in a cache Thanks
I have never been to these gardens, and I've lived in Dunedin my whole life. What a beautiful wee spot, though it certainly got more messy as I got higher up. Think I must have turned the wrong way at one point as I ended up taking the long loop to get there! Once I got to the general area it didn't take too long to locate the cache, but gosh it's heavy!!!! I couldn't budge it out of its spot! Eventually got there, and dug into the log book. Nice to see many stories written, I think a few people made the same mistake I did with the loop. Signed and replaced and off I went, straight down. That dirt road is like an ice rink! Very slippery. Again I got a bit lost here, coming out right at the bottom by someone's campervan.. hmm. Back up a bit and finally got on the right track. Thanks for the adventure!
One watcher. Never been to the gardens before but my No.1 had taken his Oma here before for birthdays etc so time he did the tracks too! Parked on the Bay road and started our adventure climbing the old steps leading up from the curb since things have been a little tame lately, almost getting lazy cacher legs with all the park and grabs. Found the entrance to the bridle track and started climbing, crossing bridges, climbing some more and found the farm tree row. Little pangs of home sickness leaving our Macrocarpa hedgerows behind in Southland and would make a noice spot for lunch on a fine day looking over the harbour. Things are just drying out after recent rains and some overgrown weeds were waded through to reach the hide. Oooh noice big cache. Someone had chipped the corner, as first mentioned in 2015, and bugs were scattering around the cache as the cracked lid was lifted. Expecting an inner cache would preserve the goods, sadly just logbook and swag in dated baggies sat inside. Some water was poured off. A wee bit musty, many hands have done the logbook no favours. Cache owner Michael (and Nick) have been inactive since August 2006, last cache logged in Outram view up Scroggs Hill Road back in May 2005 so without cache owner visits, only one local revisited the cache to tidied things up. Adding some more swag to one of the larger glad baggies in cache; should the occasion arise we might visit again sometime to drop in more protection; given the size of the logbook we will have to bring a selection of boxes that would fit! Considering how fragile it is, it doesn't get banged by the 'stop car, open door, grab cache' lazy cacheri with their new phones; especially since someone was not kind to poor Wallace the wondering gnome. Continued up and around to the other side of the gardens dropping down through the yards to the cafe. We must have missed the donation box on the route taken, not fully exploring the easier lower gardens where most of the attractions would be. Thanks for leading us here for the cache. *High favs! **10favs** 2nd Favorite Fan! Heart challenge **20pt 48th** Trad **800pt***. TFTC
Great cache, cool container, TFTC. Good to get another oldie. It’s a pleasant walk up here today. The GPSr took me right to the cache.
The logbook is damp; the two plastic bags it is in need replacing. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any with me. Hopefully, the next finder can change the plastic bags.

I have been to functions here but never explored the garden before. What better excuse than a geocache to do the circuit of the place and admire the plants, even in the middle of winter.
We like many it seems took the long way round. No regrets though, we had 5 friendly fantails who were very chatty as we made our way up, then enjoyed the scenic views from the top as we begun the actual hunt for the cache. TFTC, now to make our way down…
Beautiful day for a bike ride with the Kerynz’s to Glenfalloch, coffee and a cache! Took the difficult route to the cache but thankfully found a much easier way back down! TFTC.
Went for a ride from Vauxhall boat club with Frame Family to Glenfalloch. After a snack and coffee we headed out on to the tracks. 1/2 of us took a muddier slipperier track while the other half headed back down and took a drier track. We meet at GZ at the same time. Didn’t take too long before one of us spotted it. Tftc
Actually it was more could not access than DNF had difficulty with this one as the track was closed so i took photos of the bridge etc and also the big totara tree and the lovely autumn scene when we were there for a reunion luncheon
For some strange reason, I took what had to be one of the most circuitous routes to this cache, with a few false trails in between. Then at 25 m I had a choice of hint items ... finally located the right one ... wasn't sure what I was looking at, as I'd seen a sign nearby about possum traps ... yikes. But then remembered the title and it all made sense. Very cool container, so a fav vote from me (though as one previous member wrote, there is a hole in one corner of it). Nevertheless, the log was only slightly damp, so no problem signing. From there there was an obvious, much easier path back down. TFTC.
On arrival I’d decided to take a circuitous route to the cache to see the things that interest me. I soon realised my footwear may be inadequate and thought of reducing my route using a shortcut track. Upon arrival at the intersection I couldn’t see the path as it was quite overgrown! So I continued on my original plan and found my footwear was ok (just a couple of slippery sections). Cache was quickly found and the paperwork completed. Tftc
Interesting trail through the upper part. Steep and mysterious. Decided to trust GPS rather than eyes and thankfully large cache was soon spotted. Sad has a hole in the lid. Emptied out water. Log a little damp but ok. Swapped Poo Bear for an ammonite. Accuracy 10m with GPS but 109m altitude. Off to explore rest of garden now.
Up here on other business, thought I'd use the app to pinpoint my location - it was 62m from the cache
After a bit of a break, today was the day to get back out for a stroll. We took a less direct route up which involved a bit of scrambling. We briefly investigated a nearby wasps nest while waiting for GPS to settle - it thankfully wasn't that hint object. A few minutes search and we had the cache in hand and dropped off a trackable. Then it was time to play in the gardens. Geobubs was happy to discover the giant fantail sculpture, a day if fantails after one had accompanied us on the way up. TFTC #273
We had a delicious 5 course trust the chef menu at the Glenfelloch Gardens Restaurant. Afterwards I went for the cache.

Function on at the restaurant so I had to buy pass it. Nice to find a cache as the other one I planned to get I couldn’t find. My last dot day till March next year. It will be good to have a break from having to go out and find a cache. About 32 dot days left will be nice to cross of that milestone by about October. Still to find one on my birthday.
Finished work early and had a couple of hour to get a cache so this one was and easy place to come. With some help from KJR we headed into the bush the was way and after a but if a hill climb I had the cache in hand. Was a lot easier on the way down the hill and back to town. TFTC
Planned outing with eve07 for International Geocaching Day. We spent a good hour last night planning and finding a not so simple cache we both needed for the occasion. A beautiful Dunners day and off we go. Was a fair and muddy hike up and took a bit to find the right track. The last 100m wasn't on a track and involved a bit of bush bashing and climbing over fallen trees. Once at GZ it took a few minutes to locate the right stump but then BINGO!!! Cache all good and dry. What a fun one this was to get to but we took a different and much easier route back down and were back at the carpark in no time at all TFTC
Headed down this beautiful morning to find this cache that's been on my radar for a while. A dot day find and apparently International Geocaching day. So all round a good day to find a cache. The treck up hill was a tricky. Quite adventurous TFTC iclaymore
We had fun collecting all the different types of cones and nuts on the way up the hill. Lots of trees cut down so we weren’t sure about which stump until we saw it. Oh yeah, definitely that stump!
Auch hier bin ich auf meiner Neuseelandrundreise lang gekommen und ich danke allen Owner für Ihre Mühe.
It took a while to get up here, every path we picked was closed!
worth it for the cache though!

Hevic and I had been past this one about six months prior with Hevic's family, however as they are not big geocachers we left this one alone. We returned to the area today to pick it up, and am I glad we did. I've never seen a geocache container like this before. I was also rather astounded to find a couple of names I know from around town - not usernames either! - logging this cache back in 2015. The cache is in remarkably good condition - a favourite for sure. Cheers!
Awesome cache, well hidden and heaps of room in the logbook. Thank you so much for this awesome cache. TFTC Found with heyhaynz
First time visiting the gardens on a lovely day. The geocache took me and my mum on a bush walk adventure. Lots of fun, TFTC
Great day for a stroll...that we happened to turn into a Terrain 856,306! Still, good ol' perseverance (read: male stubbornness) got us there in the end...cheers!
after a false start going up the wrong path, we took a short cut through some really dense bushes making it really difficult for ourselve.
we found it in the end!
great
we found it in the end!

Was on holiday in Dunedin...and was taken out for a drive down Otago Peninsula !
She suggested I might like to see these gardens....guess what....I saw there is a cache here ! Took a while to find the right direction.....and the track didn't even seem to be a track at several stages....I hope I didn't put G off ....her first time with an obbsessed geocacher !
Finally we got there !Cool container...came down the 4wheel drive road...Fave !

It was raining, but we really wanted to find a cache. So we walked through the gardens, through the bush in search of this cache. After a short time we gave up on the umbrellas. Luckily it was a warm day. Eventually we found the right path (not immediately) and made it to the cache location where we searched and finally found it. Then we walked back and got even wetter.

What a lovely garden! We had lunch here first, and afterwards we walked through the garden. We didn't take the shortest route to the cache, and the garden quickly changed into a dense bush. Beautiful! After some slippery steps, we walked through some meadows at the top and had great views over the bay here. Then, we went down via the other side towards the cache, which we quickly found. What a fantastic place, we had great fun!

By visiting the interessting Garden found the Cache after a little search. Thanks
A nice stroll from Macandrew Bay along the cycle/walk way to Glenfalloch, then a circuit of the gardens as far as this cache.
The lid of the box has chipped, so water had got inside. Luckily the logbook is okay. Replaced in a way which hopefully will keep it dry. Crane2's Pathtag Sherpa #2 visited.
Then we enjoyed a cup of coffee in the sun before continuing to see the big matai and the spring flowers.

Along with the Wednesday walking group it was nice to be the next one to sign the log since January.
Daywalk supplied the handie to dry it out. Lovely spring flowers.

Out with a bunch on our usual Wednesday walk. I was busy rooting around behind some stumps when P&Vee called out to say that it was found. A chip in the lid had let in some moisture but luckily daywalk had a handy cloth to wipe it dry.
Wow that's a trek especially when I got a little lost coming down a great adventure thank you
Didn't know it was going to be such a hike. But glad we took a picnic. We needed it after getting to the top. Cool cache too! Very garden-esque
Thanks for an individual styled cache. Wish I had walked the top path, after climbing out of the bottom )))))))
We were visiting the Glenfalloch gardens and as we were finishing our tour I looked at the GPSr and noticed this cache not too far away. It looked easy, there are plenty of tracks in the region - or so I thought. After we got to the stage were the track was starting to look rather rough, Mrs agcnz decided to wait and I walked on. I soon realised that although I was only 80 metres from the cache I would have to go bush up a steep hillside. I wasn't going to give up at this stage so set off, it wasn't all that bad. Made it to the cache and a quick find - great container, first I have seen like this. I enjoy these sorts of caches with a little extra challenge, it gets a favourite point. Signed log, TFTC!
Found with hinemoana. pretty sure we went the wrong way but got to it eventually great container.

Very nice bush bash to the cache! Started as a walk, then continued as a walk 'for the more adventurous' and the we ended up crawling under fallen trees and over them, trying to untangle ourselves from the bushes... great fun! The container is awesome, and blends in so well with the surrounding colours it was not obvious immediately what we are looking at! Found a perfectly good 4wd track coming down... The gardens look very nice, everything is in bloom, and my camera went on strike! TFTC!!!
What a treasure the gardens are. Formal at the bottom and a bit wilder up top. Well worth a few hours walking around then up to nab the cache. As mentioned a fantastic container.

Whew - earned my xmas rest after this hike and the Harbour Cone - thanks so much. Great cache = loved the container! Guessing it was crafted by a local?
Unreal - phone died 24metres away from cache - perseverance paid off - located shortly after! Amazing container! tftc

Truly lovely gardens. Here early in the morning so everything wet and greasy and not at its best but still charming. TFTC
What a great find! No muggles here, for sure. We found this on the day before our 35th wedding anniversary. Nice present for us. We picked up trackable "Cops and Robber (robber)" and will move it along. Left a US $2 bill. This is our best ever find and it was in a beautiful location. Thanks for the experience.

One of many hill climbs today on the peninsula. Good to get this one off the to get list. TFTC
we have kept the trackable for a long time (sorry).... but we knew we would be coming a long way across the world and so thought the wait would be worth it ...

I have been meaning to get to this cache for a long time now. Was a beautiful warm winters morning with the sun peeking through the scattered cloud. After reading the logs I made sure I took a good look at the grounds map for Glenfalloch to figure out the easiest way of getting to the outer track. Was a short walk up there but my unstretched calves made me suffer. Beautiful views from up this way. It was interesting to see that a lot of planting appears to be going on at the moment. Loved the cache container - that is truely exceptional and very fitting for the Glenfalloch garden. After signing the log I elected to continue walking up and across to come down the other side. There were excellent views across the small valley and it gave a very good idea of what those who decided to go through the main garden and then climb had to go through (you're all completely mad I think). The whole trip, including the drive from the CBD and back, only took an hour - a nice wee break from it all. TFTC!
Had an adventurous walk to this one because I visited the main garden. Very pleasant it was too. Lots of muggles. Liked the container very much. TFTC
We avoided the main Glenfalloch garden (and the entry fee) and followed a track around the back to the cache.
A nice walk up the hill.
Thanks.

Haven't been to Glenfalloch since shortly after the pines at the top got cut down. As other logs point out, since the cache was hidden the gardens have changed from entry by donation to a charge of $5 per adult, children free. However, there's no-one checking so presumably you can cheat the system by putting less than that in the box (but it is a non-profit trust running it...). Spring was a good time to bring my mother for a wander. The lower gardens are looking good, and cutting out the pines allows light and views from the upper gardens. Some of the previous tracks are out of order, or have been eliminated by the logging roads. The gardens are going to be overrun by wilding sycamores in a couple of years, itf they don't stop them seeding. Nice cache!
This was a hard start for our caching day. As mentioned by other cachers there are no tracks in the upper park and this made it hard to reach the cache.
It is definitly a very nice container, one of the best we ever had. TFTC

I left Mrs Moose to peruse the gardens and pottery and took what I thought was the right path to the cache. Wrong, like most of the others here it took a 100m bush bash to get to GZ. I liked the container once there TNLN Thanks.
I think I suggested to CruiseKat that we go into the park 'backwards' for the more direct route to the cache, but the 'group decision' was to go in the front entrance. Anyway, after a long and sometimes hard climb around the valley, we got round to the correct location, at which point it was an easy find.
Approached this one from the wrong side and had a hard time climbing up Once there, it was easy to find. Great views. The way back to the car park was easy! TFTC.
Went out in the dark after this one. Had to bush bash the 100m. Looks like a lot of work is being done in the area so hope the cache will be okay. TNLN
Like many others went up the walk in a straight-ish line, but got there in the end after a nice walk around. Our friend made the find and was quite chuffed - a new cacher in the making perhaps:) TFTC
There was no-one there to pay? Possibly due to it being a public holiday. Took wrong route for a start, ended up having to bush-bash a bit, found eventually after getting slightly lost. Loved the cache container. TNLN, TFTC
nice easy find once up there. was a mission and a half to get there in the first place being such a nice day got very hot. but great original cache never seen anything quite like it. good size to. took flying monster geo coin
Just a note on this cache - it's a waste of time complaining about the cost in this listing as the owner hasn't logged in since August 2006.
If you have a beef with the cost complain to geocaching.com

Admissionfee for adult is now NZD 5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In your description you are still giving the wrong information. See my log of 1 Dec 2006 to correct it. This cache-owner is either slow or not willing-bad-bad-bad!

The admission fee is now $5 though the ad in The Star still says admission by donation. Without a map I went via the Dam / Waterfall and had to do about 80m of bush bashing. Relatively easy find at GZ and a wide vehicle track doing down from here...
We managed to get in here without paying however we never managed to get close to the cache site. Went up a rather dodgy track that is clearly undergoing maintenance, discovered a lot of fallen trees. The track we thought would take us to the cache was blocked by a tree - a huge one! Maybe when we return to this area again we may have another look. We got to within 100m of GZ. Thanks for the look around this area.
Thanks to a tip-off by another fellow cacher, I finally found a free access to this cache.
Awesome cache container. Thanks!
