hmmm. Had a thorough look but alas. GPS and clue put me on hands and knees looking into what seemed like just the alcove for a cache . Kept thinking of "The Alcoves" in that movie "In Bruges". No sign of it there or around but hundreds of plastic shotgun wads in immediate vicinity. Oh well will watch log for this cache with interest. Great mission on bike though in a break in the flooding rain. Heaps of pig sign on way up.
Found after some searching. (edited to visit a personal trackable)

We carried on from the caves and really enjoyed the walk on to the dam. Good little hiding place too. We were pleased to see we could do a circuit but made a bad mistake when we got to the junction with the 4WD track and the link back to the track to the caves. Should have gone back on the track but decided to go 4WD. .... a rough and clayey and ugly route!!! We were thinking that it would be slippery and even more unpleasant if it was wet and then it began to rain!! Fortunately we got back to the car before it really pelted down. An Adventure and the reason we love to geocache!
Ambled up from the caves cache. Amazing piece of engineering. Thoroughly enjoyed these two caches today.
Thanks for the fun!
Thanks for the fun!
After a quick find at the caves Jr B and I continued to ensure we wouldn't run out of daylight. Enjoyed the walk along the race, and the finale at the reservoir. Wow! Cache of the day, and possibly the weekend! Had Mr been alone, and had a tent in the backpack, the dam would have been a perfect place to spend the night. TFTC - a real highlight, and I am amazed it took me over 3 years to come here. It always sounded too hard, too far away, but that proved wrong and I am glad I finally did this one. Found muggle log in book - they left a 50c stamp!
UPDATE: Ah! I see they even went online and logged their find. Also: recent track maintenance to the caves has made the walk really easy.

My husband and I were out for a leisurely 4 wheel drive, when we decided to take a break and walk to the dam. Upon walking around the dam and pondering the scenery we came across a stack of rocks which as I was staring at them wondering why they were there my eagle eyed husband spotted the booty.......... as I watched him pick up the rock I wondered how long it had been since that particular rock had been moved. Not as long as I thought as the last log in the cache was Jan 10.... here's me thinking it was like a hundred years ago......... wrong!!! Anyway we knew nothing about geocaching, but found it a real joy which added a little extra to our adventure : )
After doing the Aorere Caves we decided to go to Druggan Dam was a nice walk to GZ and was surprise by the damage that was done on the track by the local wildlife, arrived at GZ just to see –gonefishing- fishing the cache out from its hiding place. WOW what a nice spot to place a cache decided to sit and enjoy the scenery for a few minutes and have a light snack before heading back down. TFTC TNLNSL (1712)
After the hard slog up the hill to Aorere Caves cache, this was a walk in the park. As I followed the water race there was a crash in the bush as I startled a wild pig. I'm not sure who got the bigger fright, the pig or me! A little further on the track, the great damage the pig had done digging around the track was very obvious. Amazing to thing the whole water race was dug by hand - quite a feat. I arrived at GZ a bit ahead of yeetrees, so made a dash for the cache and nabbed it just as he come into view. Thanks for a most enjoyable walk.

Wandered on from the caves. Interesting spot, took a roundabout route on the way back heading for the 4WD track and then taking a short cut back onto the main track. Some idiot has blasted the sign at the track junction with a shot gun though. Managed to get my low slung 2WD saloon to the parking site, not without a few nervous moments though. TFTC, Biggles.
Carried on from Aorere Caves cache. The lengths people went to try and find gold are really quite remarkable. Really enjoyed walking up here. TNLN SL TFTC
bum has done the ride before, new adventure for worker. met hunters looking for lost dogs, one of which we found later.
Oh yes, the last log was by a random tramper who found the cache, logged his visit , noted this was the 2nd one he had found in the bay. He took a rubber & left a business card!! nice one !! thanks

We found this box totally by accident! this is the 2nd geocache box we have found by accident, this one had the web address in so were were able to find our way here and register - now we're off searching for more
Gorgeous place, well worth the walk. Someone else mentioned not taking the 4WD track back down, we'd 2nd this. The 4WD is a tedious walk, much better to double back and return via the caves.

Great fun on the MTB's up here but a bit dicey on the narrow ridge at times. That ditch is very deep!!!
Only took 20 mins to get back to the car
Interesting history.

Wow - great walk up and interesting site. Parked at the boots as didn't want to push our luck in the geomobile - it has gone many places but with the rain last week this may have been tempting fate. Couldn't find the cache after checking the logical spots so read the clue, hmmm, definitely looking in the right spot. Oh there it is - under my hat!! TFTC. +TB +/- coin
Beautiful spot - walked along dam and had lunch, wish had binoculars as lots of birdlife on water. Had already been to caves so walked back along 4-wheel drive track. Not a great option, probably easier to walk back the way you came, although we always love a circular route!

Great bike ride up the single track (quite a bit of walking actually) followed by a nice brew of tea and a blast of a ride down the 4WD track. Highly recommended. Thanks for the cache.
Nice walk up to this cache. Andre and Elena went cave exploring while i continued along the path to the dam. Good hiding place. Cheers.
Enjoyed this walk on our holiday. Haven't been on it for about 7 years we decided so the vegetation has grown up alot. Found the cache after an inital false start in the wrong place. TNLN
Enjoyed our small holiday to Golden Bay and geocached our way from Christchurch there and back. Thanks to all our fellow geocachers for guiding our journey.
Climbed up in the morning after breakfast. Great fun.

Made a video about finding it but did not give away the location in our documentary! Good walk there with my dad long-john.
Had a great afternoon walk to this interesting historic site, exploring the caves on the way. Many long hours of hard manual labour must have gone into the construction of the dam and raceway for little financial gain in the end. + bird clip & car toy, - marbles & glass star. TFTC
This is a cache I visted ages ago, think I got the FTF but not sure. Can the next person check the logbook and tell me the date of my visit?!
Nice to make it up here after all these year, very interisting spot make you respect the old miners and all their hard work.
Neat canals!
Left Mrs Buzz at the Ballroom as her achillies was moaning.
I hope the guys that dug these canals found some gold at the end to make it all worthwhile.
Thanks Captain S for getting us up here.

I wasn't able to get further than the first dig ditch in the track, so I reversed up, parked up and got out my MTB, I decided I'd do a loop track, starting with the 4WD track, grab this cache, round to the cave cache, and then back down the walking track to the car. What can I say about the uphill on the 4wd track? Well I walked nearly all of it! It was bloody hot too. I managed to bike the last few hundred metres down to the dam however, where it didn't take too long to find the cache. After lowering my bike seat (it had been too high for offroad biking) I headed off on the track for the next cache. No exchange made. Cheers Gav [781]
biked up here many times before great spot, also my great, great, great grandfather mined for gold in these parts.
