As there has been either no response from the cache owner, no cache to find or log to sign, or it has been a number of months since the last owner note I am archiving this cache to keep from continually showing up in search lists and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

If you wish to repair/replace/make available the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact a reviewer (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, the reviewer will be happy to unarchive it.

Should you replace the cache after 30 days has passed please create a new cache listing so it can be reviewed as a new cache.

Any update akkatracker? Have you managed to replace this one?

22-Jun-13
Sorry Alfyboy
These are one of my top priorities and I've only just returned from interstate. A reconnaissance is being planned with Slaytornator.

05-Jun-13
Hmmm I've been slack haven't I
Will try to make it down this Monday (public holiday) as I will be in the area.
I have my ways and will try to get in and retrieve the cache (and maybe contact the school while I'm at it) but it'll probably have to be archived.

04-Jun-13
I came past to check it out and the whole area is under construction. I couldn't get near GZ. Looks to be that this cache has been either buried, lost or thrown out and is gone. Needs to be archived. Shame about that.

02-May-13
The area was always a grey area so this is offline until I can figure out what to do. I'm very busy at the moment so I'll check in about 3 weeks.

The cache is still there if you wish to find it.

29-Apr-13
Like TheScoutWizard we found a construction area.
(Unhappily his comments weren't available when we downloaded the coordinates.)

You might want to disable this particular cache for a while.
When I went to find it this afternoon, the whole place is a building site with restricted entry.
I'm not sure what's going on, but it looks like Shore school has bought the site and is redeveloping it.
According to graythwaite.org.au, Shore has used a Part3A application to bypass the council and the Heritage Register for their development. Looking at pics on their website, the bit the cache is in looks like it's earmarked for redevelopment.

28-Feb-13
Hope the building is restored in the future. Have taken the trackable bear and will move it on in the near future. TFTC

Walked the full square on a warm afternoon before finding an access point. Even this turned out not to be the easiest approach and required some bush bashing. Once at GZ, the cache was fairly quickly spotted. Getting out was much simpler by using a much more straightforward approach. TFTC

22-Jan-13
Great spot. No trouble getting in. Old logs gave us a good clue. Took travel bug Barbar.

04-Jan-13
Quick easy find once I got access. Might be last find in north Sydney for a whole as I am relocating to the city from Monday! Dropped 2 TB's - both appropriate in their own ways! TFTC.

New Year's Day! Another find on an awesome day to start the years. Cache in good condition and cords are bang on. TFTC

07-Dec-12
OOPS, BUSTED.

After reading all the logs, I decided that the locals couldn't be too serious about security, since everyone else got in and out OK. Well...as I was taking the left-hand path off the Union Street entrance, the one that most others seemed to use, I was approached by two official-looking fellows who asked me whether I had permission to be on the grounds. They said something about doing a tender (??not a familiar term to an American like me) on the property for Shore School and clearly they knew I should not be there.

I decided to brazen it out. I told them that I was geocaching, that it was an international game with something hidden on the property, and that if they liked I could show them the information on-line. I mentioned that this had been going on for at least a few years here, and that I and the game were totally harmless. I even mentioned that despite my American accent, I live here in Sydney (true at least part-time)--turns out that reassured them. Never thought of my accent as suspicious before, but hey, at age 60+ I can NOT learn to say WOH-TAH instead of WAH-TERR. Anyway...

Then they started to walk off and one mentioned that as far as he was concerned, he hadn't seen me. So I bush-bashed a bit to GZ...and looked through bamboo. And looked. And looked. I was soooo close to quitting--but after all that confrontation and more, I was really, really determined. And suddenly, there it was.

Whew. SL and beat a hasty retreat, figuring that I might as well go right out the easy way down the driveway. I could always break into a run if needed (ha ha, sure). Glad to have that one out of the way.

It would certainly be helpful if the legal and security questions were actually answered with respect to this site. Then we cachers could have an answer if confronted as I was. All's well that ends well, I guess, but I do wonder about the future here.

04-Dec-12
I came in from Union Street and, to keep incognito, took a faint trail to the left which eventually involved a little bush-bashing up a slope to reach the impressive stand of bamboo and GZ. I found the cache after a few minutes searching; some of the previous logs helped. The sounds of the bamboo stalks rubbing together is quite eerie, almost like someone sneaking up behind you. A great hide in a fascinating location, thanks.

02-Dec-12
Back in North Sydney again for the Kids Dance Performance Show. As we had permission to be at the school we assumed the signs did not apply to us today so from the bottom gate we made our way up. Hard to believe the bamboo is a protected under the heritage act. We could not get a good reading but did a lap and soon spotted some thing a little out of place. Removed the camo and there was the cache. We completed the signing duites and re hid. TFTC.

After taking a wrong turn I ended up having to bush bash to GZ. Thought I was going to have to spend some time scavenging, but ended up being a relatively quick find, more by luck rather than skill. A couple of the earlier log enteries helped too. SL. TNLN. TFTC.

Yeah finally an Akkatracker cache! Big Grin TFTC
Geodog didn't really like the creaking bamboo at first.

Returned here to drop off Cache Us If You Can TB#3. I gave up trying to find a cache that Alfyboy and other regulars haven't been to, so settled on distance. This one is 9.9km from Wallaby's End. Who is gonna get here first? My money's on akkatrakker. Enjoy!

25/10/12 8:49 AM. Cache #187. Current streak: 46 days. Well that was a hard one! Found the Union St entrance and, like so many before me, ignored the signs and went in. Easy track to the bamboo, but over 20 minutes of poking and prodding and rooting around like a hungry elephant. GPSr & iPhone both too bouncy here. Occasionally checking past logs for clues. Eventually stopped to read older ones, sitting on a root with my foot next to an object mentioned in a 2010 log (T3I). Sure enough, CIH. Signed log, before brushing myself off and heading to work decidedly sweaty. My log in the book mentions a TB that I had left but as I got to NS station I realised I'd left it in my pocket, so disregard that. Razz TFTC!

"Do not enter" signs? Didn't see 'em Smile But anyway, all Geocachers automatically have access to all areas

27-Sep-12
[14:00 Found after a pretty extensive search.]

Tips for those that follow:
- Look around the bamboo
- Do not fear spiders
- Do not leap off any heights in your rush to take the cache someplace for log signing (the ground is NOT level)

06-Sep-12
While scratching my head on Bank St, I overheard a tour guide talking about Graythwaite. He very nicely told me that the entrance was on Union St.

10min later, I remembered that 1.5 terrain is not a bush bash. If you're walking over something that is not mowed grass or man-paved road, you're accessing GZ the wrong way. I must have pissed off at least 5 spiders before turning back.

Will try again another day.

22-Aug-12
Would you believe it was just short of 4 years ago I last visited this spot and logged a DNF Surprised?

Today after reading through the past logs I had a clue and thankfully it didn't take too long this morning to find the cache. It almost seems as though this is on private property now- I remember before driving up towards GZ but not anymore. TFTC!

19-Aug-12
After visiting Cool Cache we went for a walk to here. We entered via a signless route that looked like parkland and came across the patch of giant bamboo - I hadn't seen anything like this before so enjoyed it a lot.

Cache was perfectly dry inside so we signed the log and returned it to it's hidey place. On the way out we ventured towards the signs and wondered about being there. To late! Thanks for bringing us here.

16-Aug-12
I must have walked past some hidden entry way to GZ. All my choices were either dead-ends or private property - no trespassing. I'm going to check out Google Earth to see if I can figure out where I went wrong. Thanks for the hike - it was still fun.

28-Jul-12
I have been wanting to find this one for ages, found it today Big Grin just walked in off the street and up the hill. The creaking and groaning sounds of the bamboo moving in the wind was freaking out the Geodog a bit so lucky to find the cache in good time. SL took geocoin to move along it's way to Holland, left bubbles. TFTC Smile

15-Jul-12
Was in the area so checked up on it. Wasn't where I last saw it but safe and sound. Dropped 2 GC. Very peaceful place to sit and listen to nature... And the trains

15-Jul-12
Oh and about the property the bamboo is heritage listed so development won't start soon

29-Jun-12
I went with ridersofroryhan and haohaohao. We were very impressed by the bamboo and at first BAMBOOZLED as to the cache's location until I eventually found it. I never realised bamboo grew so close together it would be very difficult traversing a bamboo forest. TFTC

29-Jun-12
Nice bamboo grove! Definitely there, Mandalf found it after quite a long search. We were confused because we thought the bamboo growth that had fallen to the base was covering the cache site. However Mandalf tracked around to the cache site and was able to retrieve it.

Took the Comic trackable, nice!

The bamboo is certainly impressive; I enjoyed seeing it up close a lot! TFTC

29-May-12
Thank you parallel sticks for the checkup- it saved me a lot of time. Big Grin
About the private property sign:
The area is currently an area of dispute but because of your caution I have emailed The Shore School about future devolopments to the area.
Thanks for checking up and if I had pathtags or TBs I would send you one.
Thanks

29-May-12
We can confirm that the cache is still there. However with the notice on the gate, which we did not use to get in and so did not read, perhaps this cache may have to archived. A shame as the bamboo was very impressiveand completely unexpected. TFTC.

05-May-12
Obviously thinking more like panda than elephant.

05-May-12
Hmmm
Due to a comprehensive report about a DNF on this one I had my suspicions.
Pending Cache Check in the next few days
If cache is replaced it will be in the next few weeks

24-Mar-12
Second time we've attempted to access this one - at least we got to the GZ this time! The park seems to be in private property - looks like it's part of Shore School!

A friendly muggle whose dad worked in Shore saw us lingering around the private property signs and asked what we were doing. Told him we were going to a park area and he told us the way there, before just offering for us to go through the school to get there with him. So we took the short cut Very Happy

The geozone is such a great spot, definitely worth going to even if you only get a DNF. Smile The bamboo is amazing.

After ages of searching we kind of gave up.

Oh well.

Maybe next time.

Thanks for bringing us here!

21-Mar-12
Ross found it in our geo group nice!

16-Feb-12
Took the recommended route. A great spot for a walk in the evening light, with the tropical plants and ponds. Heritage-listed bamboo is amazingly noisy in even light breezes. Dropped comic GC, TFTC.

14-Feb-12
I originally approached from the North (Lord St) but couldn't find a way through that wasn't private property, and so walked the entire block around to Union St. A long-ish stole for a lunch break but well worth it as the secluded (almost secret) garden was fantastic.
It would be a huge shame to see it replaced with apartments and so I really hope the appeal succeeds.

Went through tonight for a late night cache check- all in order but a bit of cache creep

29-Jan-12
We figured out the clue and accessed the grounds thru an 'easy way' (though still saw several warning signs).
What an interesting nature round GZ! And yes, heard the bamboos cracking.

Thanks akkatracker for taking us to such an unusual place!

25-Jan-12
As usual we bushwacked in the long way and then managed to amble out the easy way. What a beautiful area. Would be nice if it can stay like that. TFTC

25-Jan-12
I had looked for this one before, understood the clue but had a DNF for it then. Today we walked right up to it! We walked in the hard way and walked out the easy way. Took a TB.

It took me 2 years and 3 attempts to finnd this cache. Finally I can cross off this cache from my wish list. I remember some of the bamboo they were so liitle and today they are huge. They grow very quickly. And bamboo cracking was really scary. Thanks for bringing me here over and over again.

On our way from waverton to moldings point fantastic location. It was windy and the bamboo was creaking in the wind. Scary TFTC

20-Dec-11
Whilst I didn't find it, I am not logging a DNF as I didn't even get close. OSM shows tracks here, but they start at a point that is very thoroughly marked as private. A bit of a web-search suggests to me a possible reason - a public dispute over the property regarding Shore School. Anyway, discretion / cowardice and the onset of rain caused me to quit.

Thanks.. This elefant want to go to eat after the find. J-LEST-TEAM

03-Dec-11
I don't even understand how to get here! Tried to access GZ from Bank St and Edward St. At south end of Edward St, there's a grammar school with lots of signs saying Private Property, so I did not enter. Lots of military personnel were also in the area which made it even scarier.. Smile Will have to figure out how to access the GZ and then try again.

11-Nov-11
My route through the park was entirely unsatisfactory, as I followed a path that quickly turned into a bush-whack. Struggled to find the cache at GZ until I studied the logs carefully - A-ha! Interesting place, thanks for bringing me here; TFTC

This was a great cache - a nice pocket of land that surprises you. And the resting place of the cache was very surprising, bamboozling in fact! TFTC

I was visiting for the day and after a nearby work function decided to tackle this one later in the evening, it was dark when I'd arrived but found an entrance, and walked up hill across the park then onto a road then finally arrived at the GZ, which by this time I needed my torch and was thinking this might be difficult but decided to at least attempt but after a few minutes I was in luck and spotted a likely place!
nice signed log and thankfully made it out.
but I noticed the keep out sign on the way out so unsure if its still accessible.
thanks for the interesting visit, especially at night!

first find of the day this cache has been on my list for a long time on a mission today to knock off all caches in the north sydney area
tftc geomatica!!!!

14-Aug-11
I have had a strange experience with this cache. The first road I took did not give me the possibility to get behind the houses, so i had to apporoach it from another side. There i was hold back by a rather aggressive big man with a dog that should fitted better with a much smaller guy, because i was entering private property. so I tried it from again another angle, where i was blokked by a fence saying that it was prohibited to enter because it all was private property. So it is not a matter of not finding the cach, but of not being able to get to the spot to search for it. After 4 hours walking a was hungry as an elephant, so went for a restaurant to eat. Maybe I overlooked something, but it seems like something has changed in this area.

Found access easy enough on Union St. Does feel a bit like you are trespassing however. Soon was upon the bamboo patch and then the cache nearby. Interesting spot, particularly nice to walk on it now before it gets developed. The old estate manor looks quite decrepit - reminded me of Grey Gardens. Thanks for taking me here Geomatica.

#137 Went here after looking at the plaque mentioned in Multi Henry Lawson's steps. Walked along Union St once on my way to North Sydney exploring my new neighborhood. I think I just retraced some of the previous cachers steps to get to this cache. Went by the entrance to the park. Then found the driveway. Looked back towards Union St. and found the closed gate. Oops. Continued on to search for the famous bamboo cluster. Found it and listened to the eerie yet calming sound of the bamboos. Cache is not in the bamboo cluster. I was afraid of spiders so was glad that I didn't venture much inside it. Until I found previous logs re brick and big trunk. Signed the log quickly and put the brick on top of the cache. TFTC!

15-Jun-11
Day 15 of the June geostreak - halfway there. In North Sydney on business which finished in time for a bit of a hunt. A while since this was found and it may be that access is the problem. I walked towards the 'hospital' but the gates appeared closed from a distance so I did a huge circuit of the streets around until I approached along Union St. There was a large park to my left and pedestrian access through the fence in two places - official access, not holes in the fence. I crossed the lawn to the driveway and followed the GPS to the stand of bamboo. As I searched the wind made the bamboo swing and sway making eerie creaking sounds. In a normal forest you'd be expecting a branch on your head with these sounds!
Following the tip from MV re bricks and ignoring the clue which means nothing I made a reasonably quick find. There's some moisture inside this one but the logbook is well protected inside two ziplock bags.
Signed and replaced.
On the way out I saw the driveway gates on Union St are securely locked with "thou shalt not pass" signs on the outside. Assume this means cars. Oh well too late now.
Thanks!

Edit - why does this site change the date to US time every time you edit???

Find #689, raining.
I had an early finish on a nearby job, so headed off to grab a few local caches, and this was #3 for the day.
I love the giant bamboo, similar to a couple of other stands of it near caches around sydney.
I needed hint (Huh?) and previous log info (though there were a few bricks around that were checked before the right one).
TNLN.
Thanks - a great bit of history and worth the visit.

If there's a hard way and an easy way, i just KNOW that my default will be to go via the former. Then of course i make it even harder by not taking a map.. yep, that's another speciality of mine and today was no exception. For some reason I thought that the entrance would be via Bank Street... WRONG!! Following the 'arrow' I found myself legging it up some steps and turning right at the top, only to realise that i was heading down someone's driveway straight to their mega-buck, luxury N.Shore house... ooops!!! Was just about to turn round and sneak back out when Mr Mega-Buck himself appears on the balcony... (nay, terrace Wink ), regards me like he might his shoe, had he just stepped in one of Rex's calling cards, and asks me what i am looking for... In my BEST English accent i reply, 'Graythwaite Park.. but i'm terribly sorry to bother you..' (i didn't tug my forelock or curtsey, but perhaps i should have??) and guess what, quick as a flash, he says... 'No such place..' JUST like that, i was GOBSMACKED!!! However, I was on his patch and wasn't about to argue, just said, 'Graythwaite House then??' which he HAD to admit did exist, but stressed how 'dangerous' it was, that it was all fenced off and there was definitely no access but directed me to a place that i could go to SEE the big, scary house and the big fence and lack of access for myself (good of him, no??!!)

Not one to be easily put off, moving on 10 mins or so and i FINALLY locate what seems to be a park that also appears to have public access... (i had walked right past it before thinking it was the school grounds - i despair of myself!!!) and yep, there is a path of sorts altho', once again, following the arrow, i end up fighting my way up a hill and thru loads of undergrowth, spider's webs, general jungley type terrain. I emerge filthy and cobweb-covered at the top (all totally unnecessary as i discovered later)... AHHH!! The now famous bamboo, NOW i knew i was getting somewhere. Arrow is doing the bizzo - bamboo it is, so i make my way round the amazing (bush?? Tree?? Structure?? What IS a bamboo??) 'thing', checking the GPS for GZ... get round the far side, look up and, hello, there's a house over there. Right on the edge of the park...Hang on, it looks familiar... Well b****r me... Sure enough, surprise, surprise... it was Mr Mega-Bucks luxury N SHore home!!!! I felt like going over, calling him and saying, 'well hey, isn't that FUNNY??? You live RIGHT NEXT to Graythwaite Park and you didn't have a clue... how strange is THAT???!!! But i didn't - to be honest he was WAY more scary than the once lovely Graythwaite House. Perhaps he thought i was a tourist, given the pommie accent??? I'm sure he wasn't REALLY trying to give me a bum steer... (NOT!!! Course he was!!!!) Whatever. I still wasn't totally comfortable being there so just hunted quietly and surreptitiously.

Loved the sound of the wind in the bamboo!! All the creaking and groaning, i imagined it would be like the sounds of a tall ship at sea, a great sound to send you to sleep altho perhaps in a gale, it would be a bit much?? Today tho, it was lovely.

Thanks to previous hints, managed to locate the cache. GPS was reading around 4mtrs at GZ, but it was jumping all over the place so I didn't pay too much attention once i got within 5 mtrs or so. The container IS wet inside but the log book is double-bagged so that's all good.

Thanks geomatica for the adventure!! It's SUCH a gorgeous place, and i was just drooling at some of the properties around there. Decided tho that i would have problems with the likes of Mr MB so perhaps it's just as well that about all I could afford in McMahon's Point would be a garden shed!!!

PS.. on my way back to the car i noticed a sign at the end of the road. It said, 'Graythwaite Park 1 min. walk'........ Stick THAT in your pipe, Mr MB!!! Surprised...

Spent at least 1/2 hour looking...found 2 bricks and end of a big tree trunk, but no cache!

18-Mar-11
Reperio at 1100. Pretty certain I took the road less traveled to get to GZ, but once there, I loved the seeing the sight of the bamboo growing here naturally. After a good 15 mins of searching, I resorted to the hint (which proved pretty useless), and then ended up on hands and knees scooping away bamboo leaves until the cache was uncovered. For future finders...find the brick...find the cache.

Wonderful spot and information about the place on the cache page.

Gratias geomatica.

Decided to try this one on the way home from to office to the hotel (slight detour!) Easy find to the bamboo that wasn't creeking today, but the cache took a walk around and re-read of the logs to find. GPSr wasn't any use. Got a shock of my life when a spider jumped out at me opening the cache, and had to watch out for a very excited dog, barking away madly.

Very interesting story about the area, and as is typicall, would have never found out about this without the cache.

Out for a bike ride with fellow wollongong cacher, Woody figtree and we ventured to this cache. Not sure how we should access but as it was pre-dawn we headed across the lawn from Union Street. Soon we were in the thick of the jungle and it was dense. Armed with an appropriate SWRD we pushed through to the Giant Bamboo which as all other cachers have remarked makes some fairly creepy noises. Today was no exception it was like it was alive and you could hear it growing. A quick search and the cache was in hand. and we signed the log and high tailed it out of there. Thanks for the cache - I think?

Did this one with USNEES. The past logs really helped and she was the key to solving this one. Coords slightly off, but the clue and past logs make this a somewhat easy find. Took von Trapp family invite and left a 0.05 Euro coin. TFTC

Walked past the entrance to this and thought at first it seemed like easy terrain. Then I got side-tracked following the arrow instead of common sense and probably made the terrain rating harder than it needed to be in the wet and rain. Shoes starting to become soggy at this point and it was both pleasant and a little scary to listen to the bamboo creaking in the wind.

All some people can see is the lure of the almight dollar, what's this? a bit of 'unused' land, we can't have that! lets knock it down, fill it in, cut it down, and build some money making buildings....
Good to see that hasn't happened ....yet....
We especially loved the sound of the bamboo stems rubbing together in the breeze. A quickish find, and we were soon on our way, thanks Geomatica, and La Perouse.

Well this cache has been a thorn in my side for quite some time now. But after arriving back to the eerie bamboo one last time I had the cache in minutes.
For some reason i didn't find the clue that helpful?
Great spot none the less and good to have this one finally knocked off.
Cheers

Best way I found is to access via Union St and follow the track around. Found the bamboo plantation and the cache. Why is it that sometimes the hint only makes sense after the cache has been found. TNSLLN

After getting my fairytales confused for a second believing this to be part of "Happily Ever After" (that's Snow White you dork Zal!) it was none the less a fun excursion and sad story to behold. Found the entrance quite easily and the cache GAFF3 not long after that. It is dry and well hidden where you might expect it to be. No need to tear up the bamboo, it is not there! Cheers GM for keeping LP's cache up and running!

Unfortunately this one had us stumped. The GPS was jumping everywhere, and we just could not find it. However, it was worth the visit to see the house that I had heard so much of in the media, and interested to read the story. A beautiful building and its gardens are so rare, especially so close to the city. It should be restored to its former glory for everyone to enjoy - both the home and the gardens.

Woohoo Cache #500. Weren't sure where to access this from. The entrances seemed to be fenced off or had warning signs but headed in anyway. The giant bamboo was rather eerie today. A very windy day and the sound that it was making as they all rubbed against each other was strange.

TLM Junior checked the hard spots that I didn't want to attempt and while I was scouting around spotted a hint of the lid.

Thanks Geomatica for keeping this one going, sad to see Graythwaite becoming rather run down.

Visiting Australia from Mississippi, USA with the All-State Lions band here for the Lions convention parade. They practiced @ Shore school and won the international championship for the 27th time. Had to expand the search area a bit to make the find. There is bamboo like that on a wildlife refuge near my home. First Australia cache found. SLTNLN TFTC

A 3/3 for a morning's geocaching. TFTC

After an earlier attempt to find this, I reverted to Google Satellite Maps and realised the best approach. My GPS showed GZ as being right in the middle of the clump, but we couldn't find the cache. An emergency call to Hunter-Finder (who seems to be based around North Sydney) gave some clues, but still no joy.

We eventually found it on the back-side of the clump, covered in camouflage and next to a rather out-of-place brick. Can't promise it'll be there in future. Our GPS showed 50.408 12.153 at GZ. Phew! A few swaps.
