30/03/2024 10:56:00 AMWe stumbled across this cache as we made our way to the cave downhill only to discover a good road to it as you do.An interesting location and a same the mine entrance is blocked. Thanks for bringing us here mtbikerozFind recorded using GCDroid and logged using GSAK
A short but steep little walk to GZ where the cache was quickly found and in good condition. Some very interesting history and geology around here - although we didn't have a 'normal' (ie not phone) compass with us today to check out the magnetism.
Thanks, mtbikeroz! A cool spot.
Thanks, mtbikeroz! A cool spot.
When I was younger and out hiking, I found that this area is fascinating due to the magnetic rocks. This was all before GPS. Some rocky areas have a very strong effect on magnitic compasses. Interesting mining history, and as an added bonus you will get a nice workout up some of the hills. TFTC
This one took us a while to manage ourselves to the GZ. It hadn’t been found in a while & we could see why. I was happy to have a quick find at GZ & slowly made our way back to the car.
I imagine that the way to this one has changed somewhat over time. We found a fun way to GZ and cache was in good nick. Thank you for the fun
I was paying this area an early morning visit for a FTF nearby that I needed to come back for with an extra tool.
Once that was all done I had a closer look what else I could do while up here and the cache up here and the mine where two obvious candidates to explore. So with some time left before I needed to be back I enjoy a little extra caching on this glorious morning.
Quick find at GZ, since I was up the ride it was an easy stroll over leaving my heavier gear behind. Hard to spot any evidence of the past here.
Thank you mtbikeroz for putting the cache out and maintaining it.

Well it wasn't a "copper"head but did spot a monster red belly black enjoying the sun and the water . Quick find here, great bit of history.
I have been wanting to visit this 2006 cache for a long time now! I really appreciate the long description and lengthy information and history on this area too. Was quite informing to read whilst taking a break at GZ to sign the logbook!
I am also a huge sucker for abandoned railway lines, so the nearby railway peeking out the bottom of the cave entrance was also quite exciting to me despite there only being a small section still visible! We then climbed up through the bushes to the entrance itself, which has now been completely filled in, but it is obvious where it was!
2.5 years since the previous finder was surprising given the relatively short walk it took for us to get here too! We are happy to report the cache is safe and still in good condition!
Thanks mtbikeroz, definitely a favourite point for highlighting this spot, I would have never found it by myself!

Found and signed this cache as either DSD or Darksidedan or AB or Adventure Boys. Thanks for the cache and the adventure. Please enjoy my random selection of photos. They are not spoiler photos and they are not related to this cache.
After checking out Cotter Caves, I worked my way up to the fire trail and headed to this cache. A bit of a goldie oldie now, this one - over 12.5 years old. It was an interesting little area, and I tried to imagine what it was like back in the day when the rails were in use.
Found the cache easily, thanks to the detailed hint. The GPSr took its time getting close to zero, so I was glad of the hint.
Thx MBO!

We had attempted this one previously coming in from Cotter Caves across the scree field but gave up as it was too overgrown with spiky bushes.
Today we came in from the Southern side and apart from slipping and sliding down the old fire trail that they have done a good job of ripping up it wasn't too bad. We found a likely spot to leave the trail and headed down towards the cache. We ended up a bit too far south and coming in above the entrance to the old mine shaft. We then spotted where we should be and skirted our way around. Quickly spotted the cache and then the rails. Signed the log then followed the tracks up the the mine entrance. There is now way I would have been going down in there. Very interesting.

Well, yesterday I was standing beside the Cotter Dam, looking across at a rather prominent hill, thinking I must walk up it one day. Fast forward less than 24 hours and I'm doing just that. Hooray for beautiful Spring weather and public holidays! That ascent led spontaneously to a whole lot of walking and finding interesting caches, with the occasional blackberry scratch, nerve racking downward climb and near encounter with feral pigs thrown in. A fantastic day walking in the hills and the pine forest.
The final cache of the day and a walk down what was shown as a fire trail on my maps, but really wasn't. At least it was kind of trail though. An easy find at GZ and some fun picking up heavy rocks. The descent from here proved interesting, with the 'trail' disappearing into scrub and very steep ground. I found myself directly on top of the Cotter Caves and had another look for the apparently missing cache there as I climbed down the jagged rocks to the lookout. TFTC

I was out and about with Tankengine keeping him company while he performed some maintenance of some of his caches up here. This one was close by and I asked if we could pop down and do it while here. Of course, Tankengine was more than to accommodate my stupidity and so down we went.
It had been some time since Tankengine had been down to this cache, but it was a pretty easy cache to find with such an obvious hint. I tried to have a quick look for the railway tracks, but I couldn't see them and we still had a number of caches to get through, so we left it to head back to the car.
It was pretty steep on the way down, but OMG the walk back up almost killed me!! I so need to do more exercise!! Tankenigne naturally took it all in his stride, but politely stayed close by, probably to make sure I didn't keel over and die as I huffed and puffed up the hill. But it's done now and that little green dot is now a smiley. Tftc mtbikeroz!!!

A planned day out with fitzy_1965 and Albida33 to collect some hard to reach caches. Headed out rather early and thankfully we did as there was a cycle race on down to Uriarra today. Met Binliner heading in the opposite direction. Once at the end of ALL7's series it was clear sailing around the Bullen Range and beyond. 22000 steps later we were utterly exhausted but certainly had a fun day. Most logs signed as AMF.
Quick stop for lunch here after grabbing a nearby cache. As the others had found this one previously, I trekked down hill to make the find.....took me a while to get back up to the car lol

Came out to look at the caves and saw these mines across the way. On walking up towards them thought “this would be a good place for a cache”. Sure enough MBO had done the deed and there was one 280m away from where I was. Through the bush and came out on top of some old railway line.
Excellent history thanks MBO for sharing.

Out for a walk on the tails whilst my crazy running friends and husband did their Sunday long run. Was walking with one of the other runners partners and we used the Geocaching app to find our way round the trails. Was an interesting slope to come down on from the cache. Still nice to be out and enjoying the views followed by a refreshing dip in the Cotter to cool off. So need to visit again and do the other caches out here.
Thanks mtbikeroz for giving me another reason to lace up my runners and get out there having little adventures.

So we initially walked up the wrong track, and then it became all about bush bashing to get to the cache...it was only after finding the cache that the slightly easier track became evident....Gary was on fire today, he got to the cache before me and our names are now in the log.....always fun caching with my buddy! However this one left us with MANY scratches and a couple of small rips in clothes, I was happy to see the car after the challenging walk.
The lovely micaparamedic collected me from the airport and we then embarked on an enjoyably delightful (but cold) weekend together in Canberra. We attended 3 brilliant events (one of them I hosted ), completed a challenge series and found a number of other great caches including Canberra's oldest - overall we had an absolute ball [^] Sooooo much giggling was had, and once again it was great catching up with friends at the events and meeting some of the local cachers.
Thanks so much for placing this cache mtbikeroz!

Today I teamed up with Fox in Jox to assist him in finding 50+ different D/T combinations in a day. He had already found 10 before I joined in. Over the next 12 hours, he found another 42 unique D/T finds, of which I also found 21. (The others I had either already found or had not yet solved so skipped). This one was quickly found after a brisk climb up the hill. TFTC.

Challenge: Get 50 different D/T combos in one day, just in the ACT. Day started before 5:30am and finished after 9:30pm, with 52 different D/Ts, 7 different cache types, completed by car, by bike, by kayak, by foot and even climbing trees. A long, but rewarding day, well supported by TikvaNZ, who also completed his 3rd DT loop.
This was #12 of 52. After the Caves, TikvaNZ and I ascended the hill to GZ for a quick find. I then went searching for the train track, which I found. That's cool, but I don't expect a comeback any time soon! TFTC MBO

Today we did loop through the Bullen Range Nature Pak and enjoyed the challenge of 4x4ing and scenery along the way. A nice walk through the bush, an easy find.

A lovely day for a walk and a visit to the Cotter...had the choice between two caches, decided to have a go at this one today. Having visited the Cotter caves I knew where to hit the trail, had to navigate the river in a few spots with all the recent rain! Kept my feet dry as I hit the fire trail and then it was upwards, over the top of the caves and towards GZ...was a fun little scramble.
Enjoyed exploring the area and taking a close look at the rocks, amazing to think one of the most vital elements to our modern world comes from this ore. I watched a cool documentary on the worlds largest and deepest Copper mine recently, was a real eye opening to how much we rely on this element...electrical and network cabling, power grids, transformers, electronics, you name it.
No sign of the shovels, but the tracks were still there. Explored a bot more before heading towards the target. Cache was quickly in hand. Signed the log and replaced as found.
Sat and enjoyed the sunshine and roar of the Cotter spillway in the distance for a bit before heading out.
Thanks mtbikeroz, a really interesting location.

A real bushbash for me to get to this one. But I saw some interesting geology. I found the road for the return journey. TFTC
Saturday 16 May 2015 - a glorious still sunny autumn day at 18 degrees with a cloudless brilliant blue sky. A 3.5km walk to find just two caches. Interesting historic spot worth a favourite point. Thx p2p. TFTC.
I approached this one from the top. Nice walk down the track. Looks like they are making sure people don't use it. Interesting spot. TFTC mtbikeroz.
Oh god, stuck in ditch only 200m from entrance, waiting for tow truck...hoping it doesnt get dark before it finds me...atleast I nabbed this and the cave cache but damn is it scary right now!!!! Bring a map guys, both phone and gps arent showing location or trail
I wandered up the trail visible from the platform of Cotter Cave, but it soon petered out into scrub and I had bush-bash my way for the last 100M or so. I crossed the spoil heap on the way & the copper mineral (malachite) was clearly visible with its blue and green colouring. At length I came to gz and after re-reading the cache description, I played around with my magnetic compass & the dark rocks. I have attached a couple pictures taken at exactly the same spot , the first hand-held showing magnetic north (maybe) and the second is the compass placed on one the rocks where it has defected the compass over 90 degrees. There are also small train tracks heading out of what must have been the mine entrance. Anyway .. enough playing. Found the cache but no copper artefacts were present, which is a shame. Tftc mtbikeroz.
A walk around Cotter Dam and the North Bullen Range to-day. About 16 kilometres of walking, about a dozen caches found and 2 DNFs. Last visited this mine in late 70s. TFTC.
After the CITO and the group trek to Casuarina Cliffs we decided it was time to clean up more caches around the area. This was also what LuckyL10n had planned so we joined forces to go and attack some more and see how we go.
After doing another cache close by we decided to head to this one. We had to contact our inner mountain goat again to do this one. But it was interesting to see the old mines and another entrance? to the mine. There was also a bit of bush bashing needed at this one as finding the right path in and out was rather interesting. Cache was found rather quickly in the end, signing duties done then off to try and find the geomobile.

#2491 - 15:20; After a pleasant morning tea and cachechat at the CITO event, a group of intrepid cachers made their way across the river and up the hill to grab a couple of the local caches. After the group had disbanded, I headed off with FurfacesLL No's 1 and 2 to collect some more of the caches in this area. We were all pleased that FFLL1's memory was spot on and we were able to travel in luxury to within a couple of hundred metres of GZ. Once parked, it was off up the hill to bag a nearby cache, then back down again and off to grab this one. I can't recall too many caches where I have not only taken the hard way in and then the hard way back out. In this cacse I don't think there was an easy way in either direction!!! Anyway, this one had it all from mountain goat adventures to bush bashing and we all have some scrapes and scratches as evidence. Our intrepid band eventually made it to GZ where the cache was found and the log signed. TFTC mtbikeroz
Walked up from the caves cache and made a straight forward find. For anyone thinking of driving in as is noted in some previous logs forget it. Whichever government department is responsible for this area has recently gone to great lengths to ensure the track is not passable .
Found with O319. Justjessie junior was fascinated by the fact that the rocks where magnetic..
Decided to walk to this one while visiting nearby Cotter caves cache. Taking a direct route from cave brought an interesting exploration of the old mines on the open hillside, as well as not so interesting final bush-bash to the cache. As usual, only on the way back noticed the bulldozed highway following the ridge above caves. At least the way back to road was easy... Thanks for the hide and adventure.
Hmmmm - the cache has changed over the years, rock pile NOTHING like I originally constructed, and there have been one/several light fingered cachers over the years, all the odd little copper things I had in the cache are gone. They had no value, or use, or swap potential, but hmmmmmm.
Cache rock pile reconstructed and container replaced. Some copper "junk" added!

A great spot and interesting that these minerals are so close to the limestone of the caves. Went a little too high after crossing the rock field so ended up in thick, prickly scrub, but got there in the end.
Great spot near the cache - Lots of spoil, old shovels, railway tracks etc.
The cache is a bit worse for wear, a little damp inside but still writable. These containers need to be kept level.
Thanks for bringing me here.

1973. Another drive by while in this neck of the woods. A quick find and then I spent some time exploring. No dramas for the Hilux and a very interesting place to have a look around. Another one of these places that I would have never of dreamed of visiting until adopting this great hobby, so thanks MBO for the cache and bringing me here.
great spot, there are even two great old shovels nearby in the bushes- maybe they are from the mine?
Geomum & Geoson walked up the hill from the Ford past the caves. Took the geoprado long way round to make it easier to go home. TFTC.
A quick grab on a trail run this afternoon. Had to maneuver strategically to get all the way into GZ off the main trail to avoid trampling the vegetation (geotrail from this one is long gone now). Fared pretty well in the end. Signed log: TNGD. TFTC and a lovely trail with nice views!
It doesn't matter how long I live in Canberra, geocaching keeps taking me to new places. This was a nice surprise! It's such a pity that the caves have been trashed in the past... Would love to come back with some equipment and go down there though!! We enjoyed wandering around checking out the rocks too. Thanks for an interesting cache!
Out for a drive in the countryside with Black Bunny and Just a cacher.
Lovely views form here - it's a great day for a picnic and a walk!

Cool spot and a mtbikeroz drive by! Took a little while since the scrub was quite thick from where we parked the car 50 metres away. Forgot a path tag, but couldn't be bothered battling in and out again.
Thanks MBO. I liked the railway.

A bit more of a climb than I had expected. However, once there, the cache was quickly to hand. Nice views of the new dam work on the ascent and descent. TFTC
Minerals minerals all over the place .Even some recent prospecting work evidence. Looking for that gold nuget.
Great bit of local history. Took a bit of hunting to find. Interesting how confused the compass got too. Terrain was easy when Jmanjezza's driving.
Got to 200 meters away from this cache along a track. Walked down to gz and made a easy find. Now this one doesn't end here. We drove back down to the river and past the caves. We were turning around at the river when we saw it. Some how the river picked up the whole of the cycling bridge and washed it away. Could see the concrete footings just laying there on the side of the river. No way could you get across that ford and geez what a mess the river did to that bridge TFTC
a cache which has been on my hit list for quite a while and on a nice sunny autumn day, headed off with geodog and muggle friend, to explorer another hidden wonder around Canberra, I was a bit worried access might be a problem due to the Dam construction but its well out of the way. We parked just up the road to the Picnic grounds where the fire trial access.
We could have almost driven there but we chose to walk.
I was surprised when I saw the first cave entrance so high up the hillside. but on to the mine.. found quickly a great location to be sure *recommended*.
now onto Cotter canopy...
thanks

Oops, we did some major cheating on this one. We fully expected to ride the mountain bikes to near this one, but the gate was open...
Rbirtles did a great job of navigating us to within 150 metres of the cache, so just a short walk and no blackberrys for us! Too bad the cave is closed off, I would have liked a look in there! TNLN, TFTC.

Really interesting area, went with Caribou and we really enjoyed trekking around the area. Nice views and interesting history - TFTC.
Have never walked in this part of Cotter before so it was great to see the caves. Would of been easier to keep going on the track on that side instead of crossing the creek and going through the bush on the other side though! Good hike up the mountain and great views. Found the easier track for the hike back down. TFTC.
Trying to reach the magic number of 400 by the end of the month and I noticed there were a bunch of traditionals at Cotter. How hard could it be?
Well, this was the first cache on the list, and it certainly proved how wrong that thought was. Walking in from the campgrounds with Joan (from PeteandSara) we got to the caves and enjoyed the view. Looked at the GPS, saw the desciption and the direction then noticed a track heading up the hill opposite us. Well, that must be it. Off we trot, dogs in tow or in the lead depending on where the kangaroo trails were, then the track ran out 80 m from the cache. About this time, we noticed the other track on the same hill as the caves that would have taken us all the way with little effort. Oh well.
Found GZ, then finally found the cache. I have to say that after all that effort something bigger would have been nice! Walked back to the campground, this time on trail the whole time. TFTC, hopefully the next cache will be a little simpler

1422 - Have been looking forward to doing this one for a long time - I've been interested in the previous logs and photos and so thought I would enjoy getting into this one....

As FF said we did this one as a drive by but it was worth all of the three and a half stars. A very heavily eroded track in some extremely steep country. My only complaint is that I didn't read the cache page well enough to realise that there were caves in the area.

Managed to parked within about 300 metres before setting off on foot for final push. Down the 'road' and then a short detour into the bush to find both the old and the new container.
Log signed, 1 x coin and Pathtag left before heading out and onto the next one.........
TFTC.
Cheers,

Went 4WD'ing with a friend from work who has a Trail Bike and stopped off to grab this cache.
I haven't been this far up the gully since my Geology Field Trip to the area (and that was a number of years ago )
Had a look at the mullock heaps and then spied the cache.
BTW - The old log and container is very soggy inside.

Number 50 for Taids Lost. Team Plucker came along as well. One of their members found the "original" cache also so perhaps it was n't "muggled" after all. There are now two caches in the "new" position at the base of the tall dead tree, the old log rather wet. TFTC and the history lesson.
Very interesting find. I had known about these old mines for a while but never bothered to come up and have a look. Even though I'd been to look over the caves a couple of times before. I didn't realise that they were so close.
I parked down at the the cotter picnic reserve and made my way over one of the new walking bridges (very solid and impressive) and then followed the foot paths along. Which took me past the caves. I walked up the west side of the creek that comes out from the diggings area so I got to walk over all the old mine tailings. What a varied collection of colours! Browns and reds. Which would be Iron. Greens from the copper and lots of white powderry stuff. Not sure what that is?
I guess at some point they collapsed the mine shafts to make them safe. So this gave me an interesting shot of a railway track into the wall.
Thanks for the educational find MTB oz

Found the original one quite awhile back. Today found with the Stromlo Forest SGeoScouts, Geostrom, Concrete Gnome and Hawk.
Collected some interesting rock samples.

As a relative newcomer to the ACT, I had no idea about the existence of caves or mines in this part of the country. MBO has again opened my eyes to local history, as well as giving me a reason for some exercise.
I chose to loop around the back way to come down onto this cache from above - and was suitably impressed to find railway tracks and a mine site. When I scrambled down to the bottom of the hill I was a bit stunned to see people cheerfully descending a marble staircase - that was when I learned there were caves as well as mines here, sigh! A good visit - TFTC.

#270 - A lovely walk to this cache today brought back memories of accompanying the kids on school excursions in this area. The last visit was in 2002. We were allowed into the caves by a ranger, as well as searching for magnatite (magnetic rock).
I have only been here in summer or autumn before and was amazed at the number of wattles in this spot.
Thanks for the fun

Found 10:02am.
Did this one for Borrie's birthday. Unlike most, we walked downhill to this one. The fog spoiled the view. It didn't lift till around 2pm that day. Of course, best part of that is no breeze, so it was quite warm for a winter walk.
One thing that struck me... with all that iron around, why mine for copper? Granted, I know nothing about mining There's no doubt some reason I;m yet to comprehend.

First official cache... =]
Took about 9 people with me but left all but 4 at the bottom of the slope
Was a nice day, cloudy thank goodness!
Cache had obviously gotten wet as it was full of mud (=[) but hey, that's life!

994. Finally got around to doing this one. It's always been the slightly wrong time, but today I managed to talk CoolAid into coming with me. Lots of blackberries the way we went, which we found later was probably not the best way (go figure, right.)
Took a compass in to play with the rocks. Surprising distance from the rocks the affects the compass.

The second of two caches I picked up out here today. What an interesting area. I never knew there were caves and mines around here. Thanks for the visit to an area I would probably have never seen if it wasn't for the cache. TNLN.
I was in town for a recce of the 4wd tracks for an upcoming club event. I broke from the convoy after we completed our recce trip and headed to this cache. I managed to get there from the top, driving to within 25mts actually.
I grabbed the tb.
Great spot!

Cache has definately been muggled, re-located nearby to stop this happening again, as it seems GZ is quite a popular hiding spot for couples. Dropping off a TB too, a little gecko!

After visiting the correct location twice to find a missing cache MBO has allowed me to post a find.
I was surprised to see some of what has gone on in these hill that form the skyline to Canberra. I imagine there are lots more surprises out there. Thanks.

I found a good spot to walk down to the cache from. But despite a 1 star difficulty I could not find this one.

Studied the map and managed to drive to the base of the Cotter Caves, had a quick look, still closed up.
Walked up a dry creek bed along a trail of sorts, then up a scree slope to gz. Eventually found cache. Thanks.

Have often read the description for this - now we have visited. Interesting geology, and we enjoyed the walk after driving in part of the way. Thanks for a an interesting cache. TNLNSL.
Found @ 3:56pm. The seventh of nine caches found today.
Another hiking one. Once I figured out which way to go, I detoured via the caves and the mines. Followed the "road" the rest of the way.
Cool location and so very, very quiet.
Took nothing, left boomerang magnet.
TFTC and the extra exercise!
