#12438 - 12:43:00 PM; Decided to head out to Captains Flat and collect a few of the unfound caches on my list. Managed six from eight with a couple of DNFs thrown in on a damp mid-morning run. This one has been on the 'to do' list for a long, long time. Stopped off today and made my way in to GZ for a quick find on arrival there. Hard to imagine a train going through here given the condition of the line today! TFTC flattreker Smile

You know you're a cacher when you're willing to drive for hours to find a few small containers, just to leave your name within.
It was 5°C outside when i woke up this morning after having slept in my car at a bush camping site. I made myself a coffee and continued on with my catching trails by 5am. Lots of fog hanging around.
Thanks for the cache.

Finally did this trail whilst also assisting StrangeTrousers do a maintenance run before the upcoming geocaching event in Canberra. Felt a little guilty that I had not done this trail especially as ST is one of the people who I have the most of my caching adventure with. What a crap caching buddy!!! Time to put some smiley faces on that trail I have looked at on the map for way to long. It was a cool sunny day and perfect for caching. Loved the changes in the countryside as we made our way along the trail and we enjoyed a lunch break at the Collector pub before finding the last lot of caches. A little detour to visit one of the Churches - love a greave yard and time helping to replace a cache on a bridge. Took a lot of photos of the bridge and railway line nearby. Loved the surprise with the final cache. Thank you ST for all the work you did setting up this trail and especially for the little things that take time like the pictures on the covers of the notebooks. Another great caching day that left me smiling for hours.

I did the CFT in it's early days during 2016 when it first came out, but we didn't quite have the time or energy to walk to this one afterwards. It has been a green splodge on my map ever since!

Today I decided to come and make it my final cache of the day before driving home for work. It seemed like barely even a walk today! Probably because I realised I could drive closer and the walk was only about 250m rather than the 500m from the road that was in the description!

Got down to GZ and after checking 2 ends of the log I got worried but then realised how stupid I was when I saw where the cache was located!

Thanks flattreker! Really like this spot, and would be keen to go for a walk and explore down the railway tracks in the future, even though I will probably never get around to it!

I have been wanting to do this area for some time and finally Aquilus1, GreyHams and I made the trip out to pick up some smilies.

It was a long, windy day and we grabbed this one on the way home. We bushbashed as far as the car would take us and how comfortable I was driving it through the tracks. There were some hairy points that I may have been ok with, but after the wind had alrady broken the back door hinge and the scratches down the sides of the paintwork, I was already dreading the hammering I would have to listen to when I got home.

We stopped about 230 odd metres away from GZ then walked the rest of the way down. It was an easy walk and the cache was found quickly. The other two begrudgingly offered me the pathtag that was found inside which helped my getting over the damage to the car, but my husband didnt think so - oh well ; )

Interesting little spot. Thanks for bringing us here and tftc falttreker!!!

Well another weekend and another day of caching, and what better than to spend the day with dty73 and GreyHams! After a little negotiating a reasonable Sunday morning start time was struck, dty73 having all the crew collected and on the road heading towards Captain flat Road and its trail of caches along the way to Captains Flat... organised we headed off!

Of course it was Strangetrousers Captains Flat Trail that had us wanting to do the trail but we did come across many other hiders of caches as well. We started of with a few QTC by Marble Droppers before starting on the trail. Tankengine has a great collection of caches highlighting the old rail trail out this way with its collection of old and abandoned. All very interesting and a nice side trip out the car and off for a walk and an explore. Sacadas Carwoola church cache was a nice break along the way with us all out for a search and explore.

With the discovery along the trail of a fast moving front towards us and the radar showing a big dumping of rain approaching we really were very lucky to have missed it but a few sprinkles of light rain from time to time. Was really the most temperamental weather, swinging from sunny, windy, stormy, rain and then back to warm and sunny again... yep, then it got humid! Had this cycle repeated through the day, but not to be defeated this was never going to stop or bother us on our day out!!!

Arrived in Captains flat with the trail complete earlier than expected but for a few side trips to complete on our way home so decided lunch was looking like a good idea. Greeted by the friendly locals we were soon settled in to enjoy our meals, a very interesting location full of history. Smittengrannies cache here was our first of the afternoon and we went on to do many others of hers through the afternoon around town as well as some of the flattreker caches in the area as we drove around exploring through the caches we came across.

Our day coming to an end we made the journey home through Hoskinstown stopping for the caches along the way. A very diverse day with trails, rails, hikes, waterfalls, mines and a lot of history through the day. Thanks to all the CO's for contributing to a great day out, dty73 for driving and to both dty and GreyHams for their good natured and enjoyable company, had a great day as always!

02-Dec-18
What a day!

We, being dty73, Aquilus1 and myself designed to 'clean out' Captains Flat. The day entailed some QTC, lots of Captains Flat Trail, plenty of Tankengine caches in and around the railway track, some oldies from flattreker, some interesting hides from Smitten Granny and even out to Hoskintown and surrounds on the return.

We started quite early, I wont say 'very' early as it was a sunday and there is still a little wiggle room allowed on sundays! It was not the most auspicious of starts, with 2 of the 3 intrepid cachers not having any data saved to a GPS or phone... I don't want to name any names... Aquilus1 & dty73, but I feel the story has less weight without them!

Anyway, once all players had the plan loaded we started off with some Queanbeyan To Coast then into the main Captains Flat Trail. All were found, we even managed to park safely in some locations.... we stopped and detoured for the non-trail caches as we went, including several Tankengine hides... with mint tins! The horror!!! I did my best Gilligans Island Skipper impersonations at the final on the CFT... I bet the photo makes the logs!

Lunch was an interesting affair at the local pub in Captains Flat, great food, interesting locals!

The wind was gusty today... so much so it may have damaged the car we were travelling in at one point when I opened the door and it was wrenched from my grasp by a shocking gust.

Speaking of weather, we saw several storm fronts approach today, but we thankfully got off lightly with just some light rain.

On the way home we went out via Hoskintown and a little beyond to the Satellite array.

All in all, a great day with wonderful company... hopefully I kept my grumpiness in enough!

Sorry for the generic log.... we did a lot today and I tried to give everyone a mention.

Made this one the first of the day as was solo & wanted to be fresh. Decided to walk in and how pleasant it is, so calm and quiet with the sun being quite warm in spite of a minus five overnight. Nine degrees already. Thanks for a beaut cache - a favourite from me.

Today Joolay and I went out to pick up the CFT series of caches together and this one was in amongst them so we decided to grab it. We drove up the dirt track and then decided to leave Lois geomobile and walk the rest of the way, an exhausting little bush bash walk to gz and we were relieved to get there and make the find. We stopped a little to catch our breathe and back to the car and pick up the rest of the CFT series. A nice day for caching tftc StrangeTrousers

Found out with Darzee Di on a geocaching day. Decided to do the caches on this road as I have never been out this way. This took us to an interesting place and a bit of searching and eventually found it. TFTC

07-Apr-18
Picked up this cache on a day out to explore the Captain's Flat area and complete the series. I took the trail to nearly at GZ in my little Mazda 3 - it managed the trail up a lot better than the trail down - but I didn't get stuck and got the cache! So cool be be somewhere that Jagger had been. Cache was in good condition - thanksagain

I have planned to do the Captains Flat Trail for a while. Now that the Planetary Pursuit promotion is running, it made perfect sense to hit the trail to genuinely earn the points! 154Crows had an eye on the trail, so it made sense to team up with them and MelcMD once again. A 7am start to get down to Canberra, then roughly 80 caches before returning home around 8pm. A big day, spent in pleasant company. Thanks to the CO’s for maintaining the caches we found today!

29-Mar-18
Out caching with a great bunch of cachers is always fun and today was no exception. Thanks to all the COs for the caches we found as we were out chasing planets in the solar system.

29-Mar-18
Caching with the crew on a planetary expedition.
A full fun day of caching around a beautiful area with lots of history.
Thanks to all COs for placing these caches for our enjoyment.
We helped out with minor maintenance when we were able.
This was a short walk down the tracks.

Managed to drive to within 100m and parked above. Poor little Kia. Found a way down and was surprised to see a landcruiser ute parked on the old rail track. Walked along to GZ where I poked & prodded without luck. Searched surrounding area but kept coming back to GZ. Camo blended in well but eventually a forehead-slapping moment and all was good again. Q: What have Ned Kelly, Mick Jagger and the Captains Flat Train got in common? A: None of them will be strutting, or making their moves along these tracks again! TFTC flattreker

On a two day caching/camping trip with EverestHigh around this area from Queanbeyan to Captains Flat then back to Goulburn. What a great area to visit with so many caches to grab. Thanks to all the COs for placing and maintaining these many and varied hides. Some interesting information about the many places we visited.

On our way back north now, we found a track in and parked about 90m from GZ. A scramble to the tracks and EH spotted the pointing one and it was CIH. TFTC

Was running late to get to Canberra but read this one and couldn't resist. Sooo glad we detoured.
I am sure that we must have taken the wrong track as there is no way a 2WD could have got to the cache the way we did, lol.
We think it was probably lucky that the cache was still in place as the area has very recently been cleaned up for firewood.
Thanks so much for bringing us here and for the cache.

14-Jul-17
A quick and easy find as we wind our way from Melbourne to Canberra the long way around picking up some stray map zones for challenge caches as we go. Being dedicated caches we never take the shortest direct route to anywhere, except the next cache of course. Smile We managed to find a way in to this cache that wasn't very 2wd friendly, but since we are in a Landcruiser that just makes it more fun for us. Thanks for bringing us here and thanks for the cache.

Well you couldn't get more Australian than this. With wide tracks appearing at the edge of the dirt road and a Steep sided stream I stumbled along until at last I found myself alongside a fat wombat.. .my second live wild sighting ever. There's lots of signs they are here but they are fast and shy.
Found cache in good order. Tftc

We were not too sure where we were going when we started along a dirt track. I suggested we try a side track that seemed to be going in the right direction but Mr Geo felt we should stay on our current track. As the road deteriorated so did our hopes of finding this cache. We drove around heaps of rubbish & an ever-diminishing track. We eventually decided that at 120m from the cache we should go on foot. I headed off down the hill with Mr Geo bringing up the rear. I suggested he stop about halfway down so I could have a reference point for the way back. I searched for quite a while as well as looking around at the railway. The tree, or what was left of it, was still sufficient to call a log and the cache & log were in good condition. I headed back up the slope to Mr Geo & the car. I decided that I didn't want to drive back the way we had come so I continued along the track for about 150m & voila! we came out on the original track, right where Mr Geo had refused to turn. Oh well! On with the Captain's Trail. Kutgw

Found this cache while completing the Captains Flat trail. When I arrived at GZ most of the old tree has been cut up for fire wood and only leaving the end of the tree there! The wood cutter "Mohamid" has rescued the cache and they have signed their names on the log and replaced it in a hole at the end of the stump, so the oldest tree is somewhat shorter!

Thanks for placing and maintaining this cache for our enjoyment.

#1454 I parked off the road and walked straight over then down to GZ. Clue was helpfull. Cache is in good shape. I also walked 100m north to check out the old car shell. I think is was an old Ford Escort. Thanks flattreker for bringing me here.

Slink1 and I planned this outing with an overnight stay in Canberra to coincide with other activities that needed taking care of. So a road trip it was and we covered about 1600km and collected 119 caches along the way. A good result. Many thanks to flattreker for the cache TNLN TFTC SL.

Generally caching these days for our teams tends to be an impromptu escape providing a change of pace to the working life. Drive, Walk, Ride, Climb and Crawl etc. well you get the drift. This weekend it was a planned outing with an overnight stay in Canberra." Road Trip" On this trip we covered some 1600km fetching 119 caches in route. End result here, happy faces all round with stories to tell SmileWink. Many thanks to flattreker for the effort and placement of this cache TNLN SL.

Suscoe had a big day out today with a trip to Captain's Flat.
A magnificent day emerged as we went along the road.
A cold morning gradually eased into a pleasant day with loads of sunshine and a gentle breeze.
We found a delightful range of caches as we went through this terrific countryside.
Thanks to flattreker for this hide.
An enjoyable walk to GZ, great bushland here.
Someone pulled in behind us to check if our car had been dumped or not.
We were please to say it was not.

What a great piece of information about such a lovely spot. I wonder why they didn't film the movie around glenrowan. A favourite from me just for the info, but after doing a power trail, I loved the walk into this one and it was just a beautiful spot sadly getting ruined by vandals cutting down trees. TFTC TNLN

Found on a weekend caching blitz to the ACT with Hoojar and The Rats. We came, we saw, we biked, we walked, we had plenty of fun along the way Big Grin.

Our Friday night comprised of a trip out to Captains Flat- a few wombats, some kangaroos and a couple of foxes. A relatively quiet road Friday night. TFTC!

An old cache and we managed to navigate the dirt tracks to within about 100m of the cache.

[Teal]Came down to Canberra for a weekends caching with Hoojar and steeba. Taking advantage of the perfect weather conditions we had two great days riding our bikes around some of the newer powertrails that dot the city and suburbs.

We did this trail (CFT) on Friday night, taking about 4 hours from start to finish. While we didn’t get to seen any of the scenery we see most forms of wildlife.

Thanks to the CO for placing these caches. My apologies for the generic log but it doesn’t detract from the fun we had finding them.

After a few weeks of planning, and a number of attempts to align calendars, this weekend I came down to Canberra and the ACT area for a big weekend of caching with The Rats and steeba. On bikes, on foot, and in the car, we targeted a number of series and Power Trails placed since our last trip down here. The weather was perfect, the company exemplary, and the numbers achieved exceeded my expectations. It was a very long and tiring weekend, but of course it was also extremely satisfying!

Friday night saw us heading from Queanbeyan To Captains Flat via the CFT. Many times in and out of the car, but a great way to hit up some fast numbers. We got back to Queanbeyan four hours after we left.

Enjoyable little walk down the Hill, and an interesting piece of cinema history.

Thanks to the all of the cache owners for placing their caches. Sorry for the mainly generic logs.

Cheers

We drove to about 80 metres of this and then it was a short walk down the hill. The cache was found quickly. Interesting that the railway line has had its tracks filled in with gravel. A favourite tick for showing us this rail line. TFTC flattreker.

Found with TikvaNZ. The third of nine out of nine finds on a journey that started out cool and overcast, but ended up hot and pretty sunny.
We didn't take the quickest route to GZ, but we got there in the end.
I looked right at where the cache was hidden but didn't see the cache. A moment later TikvaNZ looked there and saw it. D'oh!
Near GZ we wondered at the railway line. It *appeared* to have the widest gauge in the world. Further up the track, at another cache, we saw what was going on.
Thx flattreker!

#1550 5 of 14 today.

Today I headed out to Captain's Flat. I've not been out this way for years. Not much has changed, just the same sleepy little town & mine ruins.

I parked up the top as close to gz as I dared with my 2wd sedan. I short wander down tot he railway, but I had to search for a bit before I spotted it. Interesting story for this spot.

Thanks for the cache flattreker.

We are staying in Canberra and decided that we would head off early and do a run out to Captains Flat and have a look around. After a late night last night with a group event, todays mini mission was a little later to kick off than normal. Today specimenX and myself decided to go for a drive out to Captains Flat and make some collections.

We parked up just off the main road to make the find on this one. We went in via foot which was a nice stroll, then we realised it was downwards for us. Nice and slowly we went to prevent slipping over and we were soon at GZ. specimenX came up with the goods and logging duties were completed. Once logging duties were performed, off we went back up the hill towards the track to the geomobile.

Thanks for the cache placement flattreker Smile

We decided to head out of the local area today to collect our smiley's, so our choice was to head to Captains Flat as FFLLNo2 had not been out to this area before.

We took the geomobile down the walking track as far as the rubbish tip...wow people will dump anything anywhere, you would need to come equipped with a trailer to do a CITO here. Anyway off we trotted across the bush down towards the railways track. A quick search and we spotted the cache.

Thanks for another wonderful cache. Tricky but eventually found on way back into town after weekend visit to see hubby at our bush block just the other side of town. Poor little bush basher car was a little the worst for wear after going in the harder of the ways, but enjoyed coming out. On the other hand, Little Red Riding Hood (GPS) decided to go for a wander all of her own when in a certain mode but came back to her senses when I changed pages!

Been past hundreds of times but never taken the time to explore in here. The places we take for granted instead of exploring so gets a favourite from me for the effort you went to place this cache. Great for geo kids and someone needs to get in there and swap one of the treasures as it is stopping the cache from closing properly. TNLN SL TFTC flattrekker

Found this cache while in the Captains flat area. It was a very pleasant walk in the bush.

Found the cache. Drove right to the top of the hill about 80 metres away and then climbed down. The cache was hanging out of its home and then when the geoboy went to retrieve it, it turned out to be full of water. Didn't bother to try to even sign the log. Just emptied out the water and moved on.

It was a very easy find. The clue really helped. Cool hiding spot. Nice area. After all these caches about the movie 'Ned Kelly', I want to see it in a few years to see if I can see GZ in the film. The container was a bit wet inside bit it was ok. Took army man in exchange for a back-scratcher. Thanks.Cool

The container lid is cracked and water has got in. One log is water logged, though the other is fine. I replaced the cahce upside down so hopefully it'll keep the water out for a while.
