This didn't seem too far from the car park so up the side of the hill we went in the long grasss. Part way up I noticed the steps and thought that was a strange place for steps - it was only after also seeing the gate that I realised where we were heading and supposed to be walking - derr! Enjoyed the zig zag walk to the cache. Cache title made sense once there. Lovely views from the sea but no time for sitting today - we are on a mission. TFTC # 20,162

Out and about with Flowerydaze, Taybee and TaybeeNZ on a lovely autumn day in the Manawatu. A lot of dusty roads to cover today to get the caches required. Log signed as TNZFT to save space on the log sheet. TFTC MalcolmB

We walked up a very pleasant path through the trees to find this cache, after having our picnic lunch in the car park. Taybee had brought a table and 4 chairs and we sat and enjoyed the spectacular view before making the walk to find this cache. Out and about with Talla64, Taybee and Taybee NZ finding caches to help fulfill one of the Wheel of Fortune Challenges. A drive in the country, with great views and a warm, sunny Autumn day - what more could we want? All logs were signed TNZFT to save time and space on the logsheet. Thanks for the cache MalcolmB.

This is special memory. As we were walking up to the cache, noticing cow hoof marks in the now I dried mud, we meet the previous owner of the land. He was planting natives around the memorial seat to his wife. It was such a beautiful spot with great views and I would like to return one day to have a picnic here and walk to the old ratas. Near GZ once we got our bearing a short search had us finding the old cache.

Out with Itchyfeet2020 finding 50 caches today for the DGSc challenge in the West Coast. Kia ora rawa atu for the cache MalcolmB.

15-Jan-23

I am working on a challenge that includes 8 days of over 50 caches per day. This cache is part of day 2. Which finds me here with NZ_B, today and the Pohangina Valley as the focus.
We ended up having one of those amazing experiences here, we met the prior owner of the land, who transferred it to DOC, at the memorial seat for his wife. What a view. We learned of the history, his maintenance of the site and saw photos of the area under snow. A lovely experience all before coming to find this cache. Once we orientated ourselves a small search delivered the goods. Great fun and FAV. An oldie to which just adds the enjoyment.

Nice to have a long weekend and a bit more time for caching. Headed up No 1 Line for a drive and a walk at the top. Found 8 out of 9 caches. All the caches were fine and logs signable. Surprised how busy this road was. About 6 cars parked at the top. Nice walk and loved the rimu tree. Didn’t have a compass but the GPS got me there. Thanks Malcolm for the smiley.

Off on another adventure with Team BOP to the Manawatu on a long weekend Great weather and company And lots of different types of caches Day one Using this template but will add individual notes as we go Thanks to all the COs for providing the caches and fun

On a weekend road trip with Philip.Perry, McJandals and NZFlossy down to the Manawatu. Day 1 we are hitting the 20/20 series then not sure what we will be doing. Most of these puzzles were relatively easy to solve except for about five which took a bit of research. Signed the logs TeamBOP.
Finished the 20/20 series we have now spotted a few small trails up side roads that we decided to get before we head to our accommodation.

What to do on a long weekend. Organise a trip to the mighty Manawatu So here we are. Team BoP on a mission. Cheers for bringing me here.

I am logging using the Cachly app template so please excuse generic logging along the way. It’s just my way of keeping track, but I do genuinely thank each and every one of you cache owners for taking the time and energy to place these cache. Many Thanks for bringing me here. Cheers.

Team BOP back together after a 3 month hiatus - this time hitting the Manawatu with our sights set on some Labs, some geo-art & everything else that crosses our path

We’ve signed our logs as Team BOP to save time and log space and have thoroughly enjoyed the journey so far. Pleasantly surprised that very little maintenance has been required and that most caches have been found quickly & without fuss.

While I am cut&pasting these logs using the Cachly ‘text template’ I do genuinely appreciate the work put into these caches, particularly some of the puzzles. Cheers and TFTC

A nice little walk to GZ, once I worked out that it was a loop track, and that the the short distance to the cache starts by zig-zagging up the hill and going through the gate at the top, rather than through the gate at the car park. We get to GZ and then the GPS instantly says I am 70 m away, and I was about to keep on walking when Twig says that his phones says we are here. My GPS still says 70m to go! Weird.
Gets a favourite. Decent container, nice view.
Found on All Hallows' Day (All Saint's Day). The festivities are mostly over, and today is the big wrap-up. But that is not till later. Much later. Adfter breakfast. nd breakfast is not till much later too. So to fill in the time TwigNZ, Ethermaster (now Skycrane Boy) and I went for a drive.

01-Nov-20
I was visiting the Pohangina Valley again to spend the weekend camped at the Totara Reserve for the Spooktacular weekend of caching and social activities. It promised to be a fantastic weekend so long as the weather played ball, which by and large it did in spite of a few challenges over our time here.

2020 has been such a challenging year for all of us in so many ways, and an opportunity to have a large social gathering like this was priceless. I don't think I've had anything quite as social (geocaching related) as this to attend since WENZ 2 years ago, and it was nice to see representation from other regions in attendance over the course of the weekend.

I tend to be a reasonably early riser, although I am more than aware that some of the other cachers in attendance this weekend are far earlier risers than I. So this morning I was invited along by the Seagnoid and Skycrane Boy (aka Ethermaster) to join them in a bit of antejentacular caching. I had earmarked these new caches to be done over the weekend so it seemed a great opportunity to get some before the tasks of striking down the camp and attending the CITO (not to mention actually having some breakfast) occurred.

This particular cache would be the last one for our morning. By this stage my bung knee was giving me serious gyp, and the stroll up the hill to the cache was starting to be far more of a challenge to me than it would ever normally be. But once up there the views made up somewhat for the pain. Then to find the cache. I got to the right GZ (I'm really not sure what was going on with the Seagnoids GPS!) but picked the wrong tree so tS actually made the find here.

Thanks for the cache, and for taking me up these side roads which I would otherwise not have visited.

#8684. I came up to the Manawatu on Friday with Infoferret to attend the four events being held at Totara Reserve this weekend. After a fun day so far at the community celebration event doing field puzzles and finding newly placed caches in a convoy of eager cachers, it was time now for a few hours of quieter activity before the evening halloween event. Time now to explore No.1 Line Road.

We parked at the road end and followed the track from there. After a while it became obvious we were not getting closer to the cache so headed back to the carpark. This time spied the zig zag path up to the gate. So headed up hill. Enjoyed a rest and view at the seat then on to the trig. My GPS pointed to GZ but my instincts suggested it was at a different tree. They were wrong. So off to the other spot I went and sure enough there was the cache. Picked up a trackable. Signed the logbook and returned the cache to its hiding spot. Thanks MalcolmB for hiding this one here so many years ago.

The last of the ones on this road for today. Parked up, and were surprised at the number of cars around - they must be off to the party the car we met at solitude told us about. Brain fade must be setting in, we headed off on the wrong track! After about 10 mins we realised the error of our ways , retraced our steps, and headed back to the carpark. Helped GSEL with his bird list at least though. On the way we should have gone first time, we heard a couple of peacocks calling - apparently they are becoming a pest in some areas. Once the cache was found, we took a few minutes to appreciate the view, before heading back to the car and towards the evening's events. TFTC

#11,971. A good short walk to the trig on top of the hill at the end of No. 1 Line in Pohangina. GZ was all quiet at the time of our visit. Quick find. The cache was in good condition, all nice and dry inside. Took nothing, left nothing, signed log.

Thanks MalcolmB for placing this cache

It was a drizzly winters day but still a great wee walk after the CITO event in Ashhurst this afternoon.

Unfortunately it's getting dark so I will come back another day for Moose's Picnic and maybe onwards and upwards to the tops!

TNLNSL All nice and dry! TFTC

Find #1231. Another find as we continued north along the backroads of the Manawatu. After we discovered our journey would be significantly longer than planned due to the lack of link roads between us and our destination - we had to prioritize and only pick up select caches along the way. We uhmmed over this cache for minute or two, due to it's lengthiness from Pohangina Road, but eventually decided it was worth it (a definite yes!).

It's a lovely scenic drive up to the carpark - with fantastic views as you drive up a ridge. The walk uphill under the late morning sun was great, and there's some pretty amazing views from the trig (despite Ruapehu being covered in cloud, we could still discern the slopes). The cache didn't take too long to find, and it's in good order. An all round great cache that gets a favourite point from us. Thanks MalcomB. SL TFTC.

Found with kiwi_flyer. I really enjoyed this one.
SPOILER WARNING:
When we were climbing up towards the Rimu tree I didn't think it looked that impressive, but once we got up there ... Wow! It was so peaceful too, you could just hear birds & water.
Anyone know how old it is? The sign by it never said.
A tree right near the cache had this strange little wooden box hanging in it, with this crickety bug inside, like a little bug box...
Log book was a teeny bit damp, which was surprising as it was so well protected. On the way back to the car I lost my footing & landed on my bum, which provided k_f with some entertainment (ouch) Smile

Incredible native trees, awe-inspiring. And the work gone into making the track is quite special too. Cache found by Ross, part of team georgiepie today. A bit of a nasty road in the rain, care needed here.

Lovely walk through the bush, and a most impressive rimu. We enjoyed lunch and wonderful views up at the trig, on a beautiful blue skies day. Took 5 star + climbing geocoin; left Arctic mint. NB. Black plastic bag holding the cache is disintergrating. We didn't have anything with us to use as a replacement. TFTC

Our second geocache with friends. A great dusty road, especially when you are second on the road Smile the 3 and 4 year olds in the party were hungry when we reached the cache, but where happy to treasure hunt. The 14 month old was happy to sit in the pack on dad's shoulders.
+ET toy - bananas in basket

It was a gorgeous summery day as our road train headed further into the valley. At one point I thought the gravel road would never end but we soon found ourselves parked and applying sunscreen. We climbed over the stile then wound our way up to the cache. It took considerably longer than 10 minutes but the 3 & 4 year olds had no problem with the terrain. Lovely view! Afterwards we stopped in to say hi to the Rimu – it certainly is a gorgeous tree!
- pet rock + car

Blustery day for a drive, luckily Edvern doesn't mind a bit of rain. Enjoyed the views, nice hide, then off down to view the stunning rimu. What an awesome tree. Back out to the carpark to find about 12+ vehicles full of cubs arriving in convoy. Quite taken aback at first, but then thought it was great they were out and about today. TFTC

Thanks for bringing us to such a pleasant spot - the large rimu up the track is a most impressive forest giant. GZ was spot on, the cache was found quickly without needing the hint. Awesome views of the Pohangina valley were had on a fine, warm early evening. Thanks MalcolmB.

The way up to the cache was very hard, because of the guys who are felling trees this day. But we did it and the views were great!

0Paco0 and Red found it.

The dogs are never very happy when they have to stay in the car as they like the chase of a good cache, so to speak!

We knew we had to be fast, as both the day and the car were hot.

Great view of the other side of the valley. And - guess what - another Fazanten geocoin!

Finally managed to get some time put aside to do some caching. So, dusted off the trusty Garmin and decided on an afternoon touring the Pohangina and pillaging a cache or two for my sins.

Second of the afternoon was Triggerpoint (noted as another cache by MalcolmB). A bit of a drive was rewarded by a safe-looking parking area inhabited by only 1 other vehicle, the occupants of which were sitting nearby and enjoying a cold beer whilst listening to a spot of Fat Freddy's Drop on the 4x4 stereo. The track to oursleves. Good.

Noting earlier logs about slipperiness and footwear, we (Sweet P and I) donned our tramping boots before setting out.

This was a very pleasant bush walk - yes, a bit slippery under foot, but certainly not muddy or slushy, and with highlights in the form of one very large rimu tree and another aged northern rata. Wonderful. Oh, and some kereru too! Great to be back in amongst it in the Ruahines. We resolved to be back here soon and to make the walk to the top and the viewpoint on another fine day.

We found the trig, and I found the cache with not too much ado! The cache had some water in it. The contents were OK as they are stashed in a ziplock bag. I dried the container out as best I could.

I've also left a Fazanten geocoin here to tempt some other cacher to make the trip and sample the delights of the Pohangina. Experience the magnificent and very cruisy bush walk and the wonderful vista from this vantage point.

15:18 Another great bush walk. Slipped on my R's a few times due to wet jandals. Magnificent Rimu (biggest I've seen) and Northern Rata. Bird song pretty good too. Dried the cache. TFTC TNLNSL Cool

Note that the trig now has new headgear. It is also easier to go over the stile from the carpark and walk the bush track, veering left.

[A wonderful place only 20mins from Palmy. The Manuka in flower and the distinctive country smell. Spectacular views of one of the worlds most beautiful valleys.
The Cache had a centimeter of water in it. The contents of the bag were dry, thankfully.
My second FTF. My boys and wife attended, and helped to find.] Good directions with a bit of a climb.
