Day 2 of our wonderful weekend on Kgari. We have left Captain Vimes and JDavs at the resort to enjoy a sleep in and the day spa, while Beardman75, Peppa and myself were up early to explore the north of the island. We had no issues finding the cache, the log was damp but still signable. We timed it well to be here at high tide and see Wathumba creek at its best. This area was one of the highlights of the weekend, a really beautiful spot. Tftc sid kneeFind #4709

Back in the west side of the island for my annual pilgrimage. Didn't realise it had moved, and went to the old cache site first! Easy find in new spot and all is well. Left 2 trackables.

Wet. Rain. Spiders. Dingoes. Fun
Found with Ali after we took the muggles to wathumba for the day.
Plenty of dingoes around. 2 pups approached us as we were searching for the cache and we had to scare them off.

The log is wet but writable.
Thanks for the cache, from Brissy, Australia

First QLD cache & it's a ripper!
We arrived on FI yesterday and set up camp in zone 8. This morning after a fish on the east coast, we decided to head over here and we were nominated to navigate across. Checked the geo map, cache either end of the track...easy peasy! Pulled up as close as possible to the cache and jumped out to go searching. Hubby was not keen after looking at the steep bank and 100m bush bash in thongs. With instructions to come in after me if I didn't resurface, I ventured into the unknown. Half way in, I found the dingo fence and made a mental note of always finding an easier way out... kept going, found the POI and the cache! All in good nick. SL and left my pen for future finders. Wandered back out along the dingo fence and startled (each other) a goanna! Took some pics, then joined our tribe swimming at low tide.

~ Be aware: our youngest was spiked in the forearm by a stonefish while exploring (commando crawling) the shallow pools around the mangroves! 5 hours of excruciating pain and so far 3 nights in hospital hooked up to 2 different types of antibiotics... arm still massively swollen!

31-Jul-22
Tftc. Footware might be a good idea, it's a scratchy jungle lol. Forgot a pen unfortunately.

TFTC. Lots of memories of family holidays and take your breath away cold showers in this spot. We grew up fishing the creeks. Such fun times.

The cache is still there. I didn't have a spare writing implement to leave behind so byo pen for now.

19-Nov-21
I came back again to this beautiful place, and of course had to drop by and check on this cache for the CO. I did a replacement cache here many years ago in an excellent location (I thought so anyway!). Now that tree has fallen over and burnt a bit. So sad to see this majestic tree in such condition.the cache, however is in good condition and still in place.

We came to the area having heard mixed results. Cache easy to find now for a beach walk bought to you by aeroguard. ave a good weekend .TFTC

09-Oct-21
I came to this area with Rod and bait. To catch some whiting, but no success. Then noticed a nearby cache. But didn’t have a pen. Found the replacement cache as the pre one must have been burnt in last years fire.
Took a photo to prove it was found.

Oddly enough, I have spent way more time looking at the west coast than the east on maps and satellite view. However, whenever I'm here (and dare I say the same for most visitors), the vastly vast majority of time is actually spent on the east coast. And that was exactly the case this trip too. Eleven days on K'gari with Ocean Crusaders; two weekends in Eurong for community beach clean-ups, and the days in between camped at Waddy Point.

After a morning of cleaning, after several days of the same, the consensus was to chill a little bit. I hadn't ever been out this, but the boss reckoned it was worthwhile. So, from Orchid Beach, the convoy pointed west. The joy of the eastern side is the firm, flat beach to drive on. Traversing the island to get to Wathumba was reasonably slow and required a many times grabbing handles inside the vehicle. But, with the scenery passing the windows, I had no complaints.

When we got to the beach on the western side, there was a few cars just leaving. Good timing! And the sun was getting low over the horizon (but nowhere near sunset just yet). This meant a good while staring to the west and thinking just how far from land it really is. Also, the sandfly promise was real!

Geocache time. I was well within a short walk of GZ, so left the group and headed inland just a bit. Even the campground had only one occupant. I followed the app, beat through just a bit of bush and arrived at the obvious GZ. And a quick geocache find at 15:15. But there's more to enjoy.

So back to the vehicles, where the group spread out a decent amount, going for a walk along the beach, watching the dingoes and generally just enjoying the pervasive serenity. This was all enjoyable and just nice. The drive back was equally bouncy, but that's ok and no issue for our convoy. Thanks sid knee for a bonus reason to visit this place Smile

26-Jul-21
Went for a drive across to this lovely spot from our camp site near Orchid Beach. The weather was perfect. The cache log had no other entries, it made it like a FTF. Thanks for placing a maintaining this cache in such a great and remote area.

24-Jun-21
Had the opportunity to find this geocache while my boat was anchored in the vicinity. Was about 1km up and back and was a lovely walk along the beach. Thanks so much for placing this cache. It’s a bit wet but still there.

24-Apr-21
We tried to access this from the orchid beach area. We hit a fence and a big Access Denied sign due to indigenous reasons. Not sure if you can access Wathumba any other way, but definitely can't from here.

12-Nov-20
called back on our annual visit, very extensive scrub reduction burn offs just finished, cache replaced and easy access. 7 years since last bushfires.

Spent a week on the island and an arvo over here. Lovely weather. Cheeky dingo stroll the next group's bait! Thanks for placing this Smile

Not advisable for Geo kids. Dingo present. Definately a "difficult mission." Thick scrub. Tftc found with gpander.

Yep it's overgrown but there was no way we were leaving without this find after coming all the way across the island for it. The mossies didn't bother us much today. The cache is in great condition and full of swapables. TFTC

09-May-19
I wanted to do this one so much as I spent 6 years in a row on the other side of this creek camping for 2 weeks at a time. But...... The mosquitoes were crazy bad. So we got chased out. They were the worst I have experienced. So remember the mozzie spray.

During sunny stop at Watumba Creek, a quick find with the GPS together with my sister. Nice hiding.

TFTC,
We were to try for Sandy Cape today but our plans got bogged at some notorious rocks.
Plan B enacted and this was the 3rd of 3 for the day.
The use of Australian safety boots and shorts isn't a good idea when attempting this cache. Iwas cut up a bit.
Visited trackables.

25-May-18
Very much off the beaten track. Almost gave up. Lots of mozzies.

12-Nov-17
Very windy on the ocean side so with the other 30 vehicles we spent some time here, Mrs Knee grabbed a couple of whiting while I checked on the cache, overgrown walk in but being in a National Park not sure if I can relocate for easier access, upgraded the hint and once again thanks Swella for your help. Cache A1 for another year.

28-Jun-17
OMG Sid Knee this is one of the most challenging caches we'd ever done!! When we parked the car and looked into thick scrub we thought may be from another entry point but no - so off to the little cute beach for some lunch and a think. Ready to go so off for our real attempt. Wish I'd put on hiking boots and long pants, legs got a few scratches and after telling my husband a few times "let's leave this one, this is silly, can't even see the car" we finally reached gz quickly signed and replaced and headed out hoping we hadn't woken up Joe Blake. Even after cursing we always end up with the achievement of the find! TFTC.

28-May-17
Wow , what a fantastic place to visit and cache with its beautiful beaches, lakes, cliffs and bush.
After leaving our camp site we headed across to Wathumba Creek for a sticky nose and this cache.
Thanks sid knee for placing a cache in another great spot to visit.

12-Mar-17
Taking the new (4WD) girl Suzee` Prime for an offroad spin - her first time off tar ... and here we are on Fraser! As you do. With the Mrs, Team Herbz, Sweet_bee and Fangsoki along we camped at Waddy Point and excursioned from there each day. Day Three was North, but to start with west to here. An amazing little drive across the island, such beautiful and ever-changing scenery, micro-climates. A bit of rain was interesting too, although just a bit.

Had to beat a path (or four) to GZ as many trees have come down making the walk in challenging - but cache was soon found at about 0m on the GPSr sitting safe and well. We then spent a bit of time looking at the creek inlet area and chatting to some forlorn fishermen with no fish (who we then saw later at about a half dozen spots as they became tourists like us for the day).

Thanks for placing this cache, sid knee. Found in good condition.
Cool *{Overall find #5141}* Cool

12-Mar-17
This was the first cache for the day for Sweet_bee, Pprime, Team Herbz, and I.

Pprime got some intel from Old Mate at the Orchid Beach store about the track and apparently it wasn't so bad. Indeed it wasn't. However, once we parked - GETTING to the cache was more of an issue. Holy honking vegetation. Did a cyclone come through here or something?

We pushed our way through until Pprime spotted the cache right under Mrs Herbz's nose. We signed the log and made our way out. Either Team Herbz found a track or Pprime and I found a really bad way to get out of the area. We finally spilled out back to the car. We took a while to have a look at the area before heading off. Another great cache, Mr sid knee... TFTC Smile

12-Mar-17
This was the first cache on our list for today. Our convoy of three geomobiles headed west. Along the way we passed a few fishermen returning to the east coast. The fish weren't biting today! Arriving at the car park we hopped out and entered the bush. It's rather overgrown here and we each made our own way through. Gradually we converged at one spot and Pprime called out, "Found it!" All good here and now off to the lighthouse. TFTC.

We hadn't been to this side of the island before. If it wasn't because I wanted to get another smiley face, we wouldn't be here. It gave me a chance to escape the sand flies that are carrying us away.TFTC anyway. It is so quiet here but for me I have been, conquered & don't foresee me returning here.

27-May-16
Found it, we were actually heading up to the cape, but conditions were not favorable, so we decided to head across the island to have a look. Found in good condition, though is now in a regeneration area, very carefully picked our way to it.

Found in good condition, but is now in a regeneration area.

This week I had the pleasure of staying at Orchid Beach with Swellerfungus and LadySim, so took the opportunity to explore different parts of the island. After an exciting day driving up to Sandy Cape yesterday, today was Ladies Day, with the girls designated drivers for the trip over to Wathumba. With the track safely negotiated we arrived for a swim, a fish and a relax on the beach (as well as suffering a myriad of sand fly bites despite liberal doses of repellant). I also ducked off to find the cache. While the cache was found safe and well, I yet again confirmed thongs and shorts are not my preferred caching outfit for scrub based caches. TFTC

Campers too close. Could not attempt to go off the beaten track Sad sandflies were crazy!

I love Fraser is. This spot is one of my favourite's.

[red]Round trip to K'Gari[/red]

Well, the sand flies! We have been exploring the eastern part north Orchid Beach, when we droppe Mullgle Opa at the tent and ventured to the west coast. We haven't been this side - so a firt time here. The mangroves are just spectacular, with the white sands around - but the sand flies! We saw a jelly fish and sand flies. Bushed bashed to GZ, a very nice tree, mozzies in the air, not sand flies. Back to the beach, just a few meters drive where the tracks have ended, bogged... A little recovery - paying attention not to slip deeper at this high tide, ignoring the sand flies! A good place - must come at cooler times, definitely, to skip the sand flies! Driving in, we passed the dingo guardian. Thaks for putting te cache to this splendid location, but please remove the sand flies! TFTCM!

Back for the annual migration and happy to report that all is well with this cache. It is amazing however growth can occur one year on from a fire. GZ was nearly unrecognisable from when it was placed! Happy hunting!

On the Island for trip 23, unfortunately due to vehicle issues did not make it to the cache will be back next year.

Came by today and agree with the previous finder that this one is not in a happy place. Fortunately I had the owners permission to place a new container. Had to slightly adjust the hide to the following coordinates (which the owner will update before reactivating).
S24 58.762 E153 14.053.
Thanks for letting me replace it.

Thanks for the info Noo82
We were only on the Island 7 weeks ago and it is as dry as I have seen it in all of my years visiting.
I am hoping to get up in February so will look around for a spot but the fires have been pretty intense so maybe time to retire.

17-Dec-13
Well found what was left of it which equaled not much at all.
As we drove along the track the scene was blackened bush after burnt tree.
Parking the jeep at wuthumba creek I realized I'd bet lucky to find this cache as what surrounded me was all burnt bush land. They have managed to save the toilet block but that's about it.
As I wandered around GZ the ground was covered in ash there were still smoldering stumps.
I managed to find a big hole in the ground where a tree stump had burnt out and a bit of a glob of plastic (I figure was the cache).
Such a shame it has been burnt but still a beautiful area.

08-Nov-13
All good. a couple of visits this year, will be back next year

28-Sep-13
Paddled across this morning to retrieve this cache. We're from a deep keeled boat across the water that came in a week ago and now the tides are too small to get out again! Hopefully in the next few days we'll make our escape, but hang on.............. we're enjoying beautiful weather and have plenty of beer and wine! Why escape?? Left a penny, SL, TFTC.

31-Dec-12
Our final cache of 2012. Camped here over New Year and what a fantastic spot it was! After a day of snorkelling apparently amongst irukandji (2 people were airlifted to hospital later) and trying not to stand on the abundance of stingrays we settled down for a relaxing evening on the beach to enjoy New Years Eve with our friends the Mad Russians. The sunset was amazing followed by awesome stargazing but you need good insect repellent! We also had a few dingoes join us later on but they soon disappeared and left us to celebrate the new year in peace. Left a TB.
Happy New Year!
Thanks,
The Hancock Clan

Close to the camping ground. An easy find.
Wathumba was certainly a highlight of our holiday. One advise. USE INSECT REPELLENT. Sandflies are mad over there.
While snorkeling we saw a turtle and a bunch of rays. Sunsets at Wathumba are gorgeous.
Careful with jellyfish! A couple of people were hospitalized after a contact with jellyfish. Also, a year ago saltwater crocs were spotted in this area.
Apart from that, happy caching! =)

05-Nov-12
For the first time in our 20 trips to the Island we did not make it, even for a day trip. Mrs Knee was too much into the whiting on the east coast so we never got around to driving over. Never mind we have already booked 1 Nov 2013 for our next arrival.

Our first Fraser Island find! Had to wait for high tide to get this one via boat. A few muggles wondering what we were up to!

28-Sep-12
Big journey to find this one. We drove to Hervey Bay, sailed across to Fraser Is, 1st stayed at Kingfisher Bay, then half a day sail up to Wathumba. We anchored and set up camp, staying in the tent this time as we seem to have outgrown our little trimaran Jacana (trailertri 720). We always stay on the western side of the creek, the boatie side, whereas the cache is on the eastern side where the 4wd campers stay. Less sand flies on our side but they're still there - you haven't been to Fraser Is unless you come home with a few bites! We took the dinghy across the creek, battling the current on a turning tide, lucky we had an outboard, wouldn't have been able to row... After a bit of stroll through the bush in the wrong direction as the GPS didn't have a good fix, with the girls trailing behind, we ended up back where we started and there it was! Rewarded with finding Die Enter Charly tb. Amazed she was only dropped off today, since the last 2 finds of this cache were more than 6 months apart... We had a nice few days away in the boat to one of our favourite spots, pity still a bit too cold for swimming. Saw heaps of whales out in the bay though - impressed with all the action.Big GrinBig Grin

1420hrs. Decided on a drive across the island to check out the sights and grab the cache. Easy drive and didn't come across another vehicle on the track. They were already there fishing. The tide was low and the smell reminded me of Rotorua in NZ. Great area though but no one in the camp grounds. Found cache in good condition and headed back with Griffo. TFTCSL.

12-Oct-11
Drove over from Orchid beach after lunch and never saw another vehicle. I can tell why, they were all at the location we were heading. A beaut spot to stop and today we never struck any sandflies. Went for a walk down the creek and were amazed at the crispness and white of the sand. Heaps of fishermen around trying their luck but we saw no fish apart from one nice sized flathead. Crossing one of the smaller tributaries wasn't particularly easy while wearing thongs as they got stuck in the soft sand and it created incredible suction. Thought I'd have to leave them buried a foot deep. We took a few photos and returned to the carpark and set off to find the cache. This we did within a few minutes and we can report everything is in good condition. We found this while travelling with the Green team 2 who we introduced to caching back in 2006. We headed back to Orchid beach to grab an icecream and top up with water. Then back to our campsite up the beach for an afternoon of fishing and a couple of beers. Thanks for a great cache.

The Knee's called in and tidied the cache up. All fine and not a sandfly about.

11-Oct-10
Definitely a sandfly area. It started raining shortly after we have arrived, which got rid of the pests. Not sure what is better, though. Although the location was fairly obvious, was puzzled for a while. The area was so natural and undisturbed after half a year of not being visited, that it took a while to find the cache. Great spot on a west coast, will have to revisit on a better day. TFTC

29-Mar-10
The road to this area surprised us as one of the better tracks on the island. The area has beautiful natural scenery and definitely worthy of a visit. As you predicted the insects were serious, both mosquitoes and sandies. In fact, we had difficulty in seeing past the black hovering clouds.
Easy find and possibly one of the quickest we've had getting in and out. T N L Blood.

We are at the end of our 2 week wonderful camping trip on this island. We had decided not ot drive here today but caught and lift with pprass and very glad we did. Nice easy find, thanks for bringing us here

Found at 10.25am GAFF1 in the comany of xambo4u. After many visits to Fraser Isl. this was one spot that we have never been to and what a find this is! We were going over for the cache & fishing, but the rest of the crew found a wonderful swimming spot amongst magnificent views. Apart fromthose nasty sand flies (still scratching!) we loved the area. The fish we caught was enough for an entree for 7 peopleback at camp.
Thanks sid knee.

An interesting drive across the island after visiting Sandy Cape earlier in the day. The road across was easier than described by EPA, with a nice drive, except for the idiots we passed......a quick scan of the UHF and we were able to hear them describe us as "sober blokes......" makes you wonder how many brain cells some people have to still drink and drive.

After a day up at Sandy Cape it was a late afternoon drive across the island to grab this one. We encountered a few drunk yahoo fishermen driving back from what was obviously a good day for them. One vehicle left the road that quick when he saw us coming that he nearly took out a gum tree. Once stopped the driver hung out the window and gibbered that there were more following, great! After passing the next vehicle the rest of the trip went smoothly.

once there the cache was found at 1640hrs.

T - Stickers

L - Glow sticks.

Didn't have as many midgies as previous visits.
