Description

Second highest mountain in Australia.

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Found on a long walk across several peaks on a day hike from Charlottes Pass. Townsend is a much more interesting climb than Kosci even though it's just a touch lower

Climbed Mt Townsend on day 8 of an 8 day walk along the AAWT from Kiandra to Thredbo. We camped at Wilkinson Creek the night before and headed to the summit first thing before the weather changed - managed to climb the two highest peaks in Australia before 9:30am. Views from Townsend were nice and it was well worth the climb.

Having climbed to the top of this peak many times I thought it might be time to claim it as a find.

I came to Townsend from the west, having walked up Hannels Spur the day before (not for the faint hearted) and camping near Byatts Camp. What a great way to start the new year. I picked a good couple of days for walking the main range, with clear sunny skies and generally no wind (except when I was on Kosciusko).

31-Dec-16
day 2 of 3 day alpine hike

We came up from dead horse gap, camped below Southerly Rams Head, followed the range around to the Mt Kosciuszko Walking Track, visited the summit, dropped down into Wilkinsons Creek to pitch our tents then hiked up the valley towards the saddle just south of Mount Townsend. There was still a fair bit of snow near the peak but the track bypassed it. It was a fun challenging scamble up to the trig point, but the views from the top were awesome. We descended via the saddle on the Abbots Peak side, and returned to our tents for a few hours, before returning to Mt Kosciuszko to see in the new year

Ribbit A very foggy and windy morning expedition with complete white out blocking any views but we made it up Townsend and over the slippery icy rocks in the end without breaking anything! We heard about the ritual to bring up a rock to make it higher but it looked like the wind must have blown all the previous rocks off Razz. Nice to get another trig point along the Main Range trail. Found on our Autumn hiking trip around the Main Range. Terrible weather the whole time we were there. Hardly any views at all. Also found the old trig beacon just thrown down the side of the mountain. Shame on you
