Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

#GA5839 - 12:49:00 PM; Day ten of a road trip taking the long way to Adelaide from the National Capital with the geohoney. Arrived in Adelaide last Wednesday and today we set off on the return journey via the coastal route. Made a short detour to the lookout in Meningie and grabbed a snap of the trig while I was there. Early in 2021 I received an invite from GoosenEgg and Stainless Steel Rat to join them on a caching trip to the Mega in South Australia. As planning got underway some caches with high Favorite points, very old caches, and the On Your Bike Series were listed as "must-dos"

The trip ended up being 10 days of solid and very enjoyable caching with quite a few highlights. The find count for the trip was around the 950 mark when all GCA, Adventure Lab, and GC caches are included. The high point for finds was a day of 335 finds in the one day, which would have been more, but a sudden storm put the end to caching for the day. No one was interested in getting out of the car to find a cache in a downpour in the dark Smile

We were lucky enough to find Gawler Fort Knox, Dustin's Cache, and my favorite for the trip Barossa High (From 21st of January 2001 with the original log book still in place) all in the one day.

Unfortunately, the caching around the mega was beset by bad weather and the day we had put aside for Mount Gambier was scrapped due to a covid case in Mount Gambier on the previous day, so we avoided the area. We all enjoyed the Fishing series and just managed to get the remaining of these before the light failed for the day.

In the end I managed to completed my D/T grid for the first (and possibly the second time) which was my aim for the year, although some of the D/T combinations were not really achievable in Tasmania without a 3 day overnight bush walk.

Needed a break from driving and there is a great spot at the carpark shelter to sit and enjoy a cuppa. Afterwards it was just a short walk to the lookout and then the trig.

This morning we visited the Meningie Hill Trig Point. As well as finding the trig point beacon, we really enjoyed the very many (at least 30) black cockatoos flying noisily and low over our heads and the lovely clematis flowering nearby. Two photos have been aded to the Gallery: Mrs y'stassie standing next to the beacon; and the survey marker below the beacon.

We can't believe there isn't a cache hidden at this cool lookout. With several crappy caches in town, this place is just screaming for a decent geocache. Oh well, I guess for now it's just GCA's little secret.

Can't believe that we are getting a FTF on such an easily accessed trig that was published back in Sept 2009. There is a perfectly good gravel road to a lookout here and the cache is only metres away from it along a well defined path. Thanks.

Oops! Logging a week late, I'm stealing Beetles2's FTF. Sorry, I was here yesterday.
What's the chances of two GCA cachers on the same spot within a day?
