Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Access: Park at the Border Gates on Lions Road, and walk the Border Fence east for 1.8km. Trig is a single capped pole, once painted with red horizonal stripes.

So, I visited this Trig point again to have another look for its witness post and I wasn’t expecting this outcome. Expectation vs reality haha. Here’s what I thought would happen.. I was expecting to wander up the hill to this Trig location and within seconds find it. Then, a face palm moment and a laugh would follow before venturing off towards the Gipps Trig.

I have a feeling I’ll be embarrassed by someone’s “A quick find” log haha so must return again for more of a ground level search and also have a solid look for the nearby GC cache (one more time!)

Okay, this one has been bugging me since my visit back in August. I’m not convinced the pole is gone. This style of Trig are set in concrete about 1.5m deep. It was late in the day, I was fatigued and a little rushed.. I need to return with plentiful time for another search so this thing leaves my thoughts. I also can’t help thinking I’ll return to GZ and see it within seconds Doh haha.

I shall return..

I arrived at the border later than I expected after visiting a Trig over at Kooralbyn, but, onwards and UPwards! Did I mention upwards? Yes I did, good, because there’s lots of it haha. I used the fence as an aid more than once. I ended up jumping into Queensland about two thirds of the way up. GZ wasn’t what I expected. It was much nicer. If time wasn’t as issue I would have explored more up here. Unfortunately the pole was not found. I checked the image from MattyRx and I think I saw the tree in the background. I was in the correct location. I also confirmed this with the ridge line on my map. I also couldn’t find the nearby GC traditional cache. I spent a good twenty minutes searching for them both and spread my search over 20m each way along the border fence. With time running out I had to depart. I was already going to arrive at camp in the dark but that’s what I do haha. Even though the pipe looks to be gone it was still worth visiting this Trig point. I found a reference to Mt Gipps from in an old Trigonometrical Survey map from 1840. Link here..

I've been wanting to climb Mount Gipps for some time now. I drive past every few weeks and look up and wonder "Can I get up there". The answer is "Yes, You can. Quite Easily too!". The track is bloody steep, but the border fence is there to help you on your way. The Trig itself is a metal pole, once painted with red horizontal stripes by the looks of things. There's another trig on the southern end of the mountain, according to SIX, but that's just to inhospitable to get too.
