Description

Official Code: TS12308

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

This trig is a new style cylinderical pillar with traditional mast and vanes located alongside a Static GNSS beacon. Both are listed as the same trig (TS12308 and TS12308-2 respectively). The old trig (TS6660), which was located a little west of this TS has been destroyed.

An opportunity presented itself to hit this area and search for Trigpoint caches. Geocaching has never been about the numbers for me. I’ve always gone for quality over quantity but today was all about Trig finds. Any Trig, a show-me-what-you’ve-got day. This one was the first of eleven visits during an eleven hour journey that finished at a local pub Smile

I visited the old Trig here back in 2019. The new Trig has given me new memories.. and a fine Trig it is. I wasn’t satisfied with a photo from the roadside so up the embankment I went and over the fence. Hello there! Photos taken and it was back to the van.
Thanks for the cache

We drove from Byron to Lismore and back today, ending up with 10 finds (and a bonus 20 GC finds too). We parked just opposite and took the pic from the roadside.

This trig point is not easy to get to. It is located on a blind crest of a busy road. I walked up on the embankment to take a photo. Not recommended if you are unsure of your footing. Probably best to take a photo from the opposite side of the road in off peak times.

Road works are going on here and there is traffic disruption. As we we allowed to head north, I peeled off to get the shot and joined the next group to come through.

I thought it interesting that the trig on the hill just past Clunes seems to have been 'relocated' - but on further investigation, the old trig TS6660 has now been marked as TS6660D - indicating that it has been destroyed. TS12308 and TS12308-2 are now in place, one being a new style cylindrical pillar with traditional mast and vanes on top. No name plate. The other is a static GNSS beacon. As they are both listed as the same TS number I think that both these components make up a single listing on our site.

Views are great from the top - will be better when the nearby road construction finishes. Currently the trig is marked as a 'Safe Zone' for the construction company.
