GANNON (QGS 573)

Installed 1978
Mark number: 52741
This trig sits on the summit of Mount Gannon which is inside the Austinville Conservation Area and near Springbrook National Park.
PSM set in concrete and a galvanised iron witness post are present and in good condition. The reference tree blaze has lost the battle with nature.

-----

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

-----

Access: Start walking the Spur Track at S28° 10.285' E153° 18.487' (parking is available a few metres further down the road on your left). Most of the route is obvious tracks. The final km is only a faint footpad but just follow the ridgeline up on a path of least resistance and you will arrive at the summit and trig. Leave gates as you find them. This walk has some annoying steep sections so trekking poles are recommended. About 10km return, allow 5 hours.

There are multiple route options to this trig. I believe this one to be the quickest route that avoids potential private property issues.

Today I caught up with adventure buddy Cam for a hike. Mount Gannon summit and potential trig remains were the target for the day. A very cold but awesome swim followed but I'll get to that later. We started our walk just before midday. This track gets very steep in sections. Cam had done this track before but not the summit section. We took our time which made the walk pleasant. The route leading up to the last km is wide and easy to follow track. Heading up the last ridge it turns into a footpad but easy enough to follow. If you lose it just keep going up on the highest point of the ridge and you will meet the footpad again at some point. The vegetation is nice and not dense. Once at the summit we first saw the galvanised iron witness post and then I found the mark set in concrete thanks to the survey notes. It was under a lot of dirt. A reference blaze tree was found but the tree has grown over the blaze. Nature always wins. We were in cloud on the summit and the temperature dropped significantly. A brief break and the return walk started. It didn't take long to be out of the cloud and for things to warm up. On the way back we discussed some possible future days out. A multi-day adventure was also pencilled in. Once back at the vehicle we decided to visit the nearby water-hole. It gets very busy in summer but no one goes near it out of summer because it's very cold. We both indulge in ice baths regularly so no bother for us today. I did however make the mistake of hesitating which delayed me going all the way in haha. Once in it was super refreshing! It sure is a beautiful location and a great way to finish a hike.
Cheers
