Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Using the web-based "Survey Marks Enquiry Service (SMES)", the details for this trig station have being acquired.
The name of this cache has changed from the former "Johns Hill Trig Station" to official "JOHNS HILL-NARREE WORRAN PM 1"

Today we were heading south and made a short detour to look for this trig point. The sky was clear but the wind was icy when we arrived. We took our photos then noticed the information board - what an interesting trig marker. The views from this spot and the nearby lookout are spectacular.

After reading the info board we headed off to complete the nearby multi. Our photos have been added to the gallery.

My first logged GCA Trig Point. I've been to dozens of these trig points all over Australia playing the GC game. I knew about the Trig Points for GCA but honestly have just not been bothered. Today though was different. This is logged as part of the GeoOlympics and is my entry into High Jump to claim my 50 points.

While holidaying Victoria for almost four weeks I hadn't given myself much of a chance to settle in one spot, so it was lovely to stay few nights in a real bed (at Silvan). Having recharged a little I was able to head on out again looking for caches, Waymarks, and of course trigs.
However it was SO WINDY that I found it hard to open the car door, and had to hang on to the camera and GPSr.
Found this trig, as part of a Multi cache, @ 1330

Fantastic views, I grabbed a picture of the cairn, the marker and my car .
The north view was clear, the south was covered in cloud and could not see the bay Smile

I headed over this side of town for some night caching.

Quick detour up the road to this magical spot.

I got out and took a snap just as the sun set.

This was the last of four trig points for us today. I'd actually been here on a bushwalk many years ago and even have a pickie of it but as I wasn't in the photo, I decided not to post it as a log. Besides, the views from up here are so good, it was worth a return trip Very Happy.

A nice easy one at 15:00 and the views were fantastic even with the overcast conditions Very Happy.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

Found by Bob at 1245

I've been here before on caching business - but it offers such good views both to the north and to the south, that it's the sort of spot that can be re-visited on numerous occasions.

Found this trig while I was here for an0ther cache.. what a bonus.

A cold wet time was had at this location. The GPSr (Garmin) was left at home so I used the iPhone backup to make the picture. Mind you I didn't get out of the car, you'll see why. It was really wet and I was already too cold to move. Anyway a nice winding climb up to this one, but an enjoyable drive none the less. I'll have to come back when the cloud clears because it looks like it would have spectacular views from up here. Thanks for another trig.

1.35pm

I was down at lysterfield lake this morning, then came up here to find a few more caches. I then remembered there was a Trig point nearby.

It was pouring with rain and my camera battery was flat, so I took a picture Irwin my gpsr / phone.

Maddie and I had an early breakfast in the hills then had a short drive to the Trig station. We have been here numerous times before and I had earlier photos but decided to get an updated photo to log the cache. The views were quite spectacular this morning with the mist rolling through the hills and the valleys on one side and quite clear on the other.

I decided to have a shot at Trig Pointing after reading recent discussion on the GA web site.
The one closest to me had already been visited so I thought I’d save that for later and try two unreported Trig Stations first.
I left home in Sandringham at about 9:125am and headed for Menzies Creek. I arrived at the first one at 10:15am. It was located beside Ridge Road between Menzies Creek and Kallista.
This one is known s the Johns Hill Trig Station. It is 419.6 metres above sea level. The survey tablet was installed on 21 Dec 1944 and the beacon in 1953.
Observations taken from here were used in the preparation of the Two Inch to One Mile topo maps of the area.
