Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

After spending a few days in Gawler it was time for to drive my mums (well my car now) from Gawler back to Perth. This was day three travelling from Border Village to Norseman on a 5 day 3,100km adventure. It was bleak and cold morning and stayed overcast much of the day. Not as many sights today as there was on day 2.
And there are hundreds of signs saying do not drive tired so geocaching helped with that.
The day turned eventful after gashing my leg at a cache, putting a tiny hole in my font tyre returning from Madura Cave then at Norseman the motel i had booked with did not have me on their list, so managed to get a room at the pub. They do say they come in threes.....
I parked up on the side of the road for the start of many trig points.
I cleaned quite a few so any writing could be seen rather than just a mound of dirt with a pole.
This Trig was a very quick find after a bit of a trek through the bush and through a fence. So much crap laying around everywhere through these parts of the Nullarbor. It was a nice little stroll all the same.
Thanks for the trig cache Geocaching Australia ClappingClan Minotaur

Followed the track to a fence, passed through it between the plain wires [the barbed wire strands looked very unforgiving].
Continued on to the trig which was on top of a small bank overlooking a rubbish dump area.
Took 2 photos, one of the GPS on top of the pipe with the rubbish in the background and one just of the rubbish, which was mainly rusty tins.
After having just completed the Woorlba Homestead trigs which were all very close to the highway, this one was a bit longer walk.
Thanks.

There are many of these trig along this stretch of the HWY traveling west. All very close to the road so it makes it a quickish stop and find and take the shots. These trigs you need to go to ground zero as they are either a steel short post or a peg in the ground. You may be lucky to find the remands of the steel fin trig around the area. One or three of them will still have the fins in action. It looks like these trigs haven’t been used in many of a year. I gather as there isn’t any development around the greater area there isn’t any need to use them. At some trigs, you will find little rubbish or a lot of rubbish. It’s been an eye opener at what items I have seen today – 1 place there was a smashed fish tank & others truck tyres – A big thanks for the series along this stretch of the road.
As I said each place is different – this is a steel can collection area – high iron ground area

An interesting little diversion into the scrubberies took me to first the tin can dump, then the bottle dump Shocked
So much olde junk !! Laughing
And by the strange arrangement of star pickets, I soon found the sad and sorry remains of a trig point.
Again, just a bit of pipe stuck in the ground to commemorate a once important piece of the country's infrastructure Sad

Interesting place. An old settlement perhaps or mine maybe.

It was relatively easy access to this trig point although we had to negotiate around a rusty tin can graveyard.
