Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Not sure what structure actually held a trig, but the inverted L shaped one may well have been it. Like everyone else, it’s a case of pot luck with a wide angled shot, but maybe it have been removed.

This place was quiet so I had no problem getting a photo. Clan PhoenixMr. Green

Over for my yearly visit to Maffra for work. I had some time up my sleeve today before I headed back to Melbourne to get back on the big red bathtub destined for home. This was a puzzling find as all of the other gallery photos have had a tall water tower on the site. The water authority must have decommissioned the tank. Think anyways, photo taken.

A quick detour here while on a roadtrip with ahomburg.
It's my first GCA find in some time!

#GA2148 - 17:20; Day one of a caching run through eastern Victoria with Sol de lune to build on our July trip further to the west. After stops in Cann River and Orbost as well as a few others along the highway, we had reached Maffra. This was our first stop in the town and after deciding where the trig should be checked some of the photos in the gallery before taking our own. Once we had our snaps, we headed off to see if we could find a new CORS nearby. TFTC Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

Stopped by with LuckyL10n during a 3 day road trip around eastern Victoria. Saw the water tower, grabbed a photo and soon moved on to a nearby trig.

I happened to be in Maffra for work at the nearby hospital and was able to slide in a quick find at this trigpoint, TFTC Geocaching Australia - a photo of the watertower taken happily.

Found on our "Making Memories" Tour of Mainland Australia.

Today we explored Maffra and surrounding areas using geocaching as our guide.

Grabbed this "trig" or water tower while in the area.

14-Feb-13
Stopped off on the way to Lakes Entrance, we can only assume that the trig is up on the water tower somewhere.

Day 3 of the GVBR saw us pass through Maffra so I took a quick diversion from the route to nab the shot at 09:05.

Thanks Geocaching Australia.

Today was the third day of our excursion out of Tasmania touring from Melbourne to Canberra and return via Gippsland. We visited a number of towns and areas today between Sale and Bairnsdale and we were lucky enough to find some caches along the way. Despite being overcast at times and some very infrequent showers, we have had an excellent day. We are custom in Tasmania to having trig points on the tops of mountains and other high hills. Accessing them usually involves a pleasant bush walk of varying difficulty but at the end we can touch the actual marker. There is the occasional "drive by" trig but these are rare. Trig markers outside Tasmania are much more varied and this is one example - a marker on the top of a water tower and one we could not touch because of security fencing. Still, as others do, we will claim this as afind. The obligatory photo has been adedd to the Gallery. TFTC

Thanks for TP

I drove past this one today.
Where the coordinates point is into a "Gippsland Water" fenced off compound.
On the other side of the fence are some large water storage reservoirs and assorted buildings and maintenence sheds.
No distinctive outlines of a trig point discernable from the street however.
