Description

OK – you get the idea – climb the hill, find the trig, enjoy the views, take the photo, climb down, remove the grass seeds, log the trig! This one is much like that! From here you get to see Black Mountain Tower, Stromlo observatory, Corree range and much much more! Worth the climb if you ask me – grass seeds and all! Trig is on TAMS Vacant Land, (Environment Unleased).

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

Still possible to walk to the top. I walked to the top. Not a difficult walk. Must be slacker Wink

05-Dec-17
Hmmm - you used to be able to walk up to this one! Has something changed, or are cachers getting slacker these days?

Geocaching Australia (GCA) Cache Find Number 1317 - 14370 overall cache finds.

Found while heading home to Canberra today during a work trip up in the Penrith region. While I mainly looked for GC caches, when an easy GCA cache comes along we go for that as well. Trigs are particularly nice to track down and find. I was very happy when they became part of the GCA cache family. Its especially satisfying if you have made a big climb up for one ! I have also now joined dragonZone in Clan Cerberus, so there are more reasons to find those GCA caches. Its interesting to find the many different types of trigs. From the traditional metal legs and vanes, to the concrete base with vanes, to the ones on top of water tanks (especially the red ones !), as well the new CORS type. When you look on a GCA map and see all those hundreds and hundreds of blue 'Z's it shows just how many there are out there. Shame so many are on private property and cannot be accessed at all. So as far as I'm concerned every trig that can be found and photographed is a real bonus !

The trig was quickly 'found'. Piccie taken and posted. I've been meaning to stop for this trig for years ! With its DT something I needed I did the nice drive today and took the snap(s) from the fence. A farmer was working in the field today - so definately being worked.

Thanks Geocaching Australia !

From the road, wasn't game to jump fences!

31-Oct-16
Found with Goldenwattle. She took the photographs of the trig. One of nineteen finds today. TFTC.

31-Oct-16
We considered taking a photograph of this trig from the road, as several other have done, but then said, "Naaa..., Not Talking, let's take a walk; it isn't too far." We waded (swam) through the long grass, careful not to trip over hidden obstacles, such as rocks and holes and were soon at the top. Common with many trigs Laughing, there was a good view from here, beyond the high, waving grass.

30-Apr-16
Found on a lovely morning of geocaching. Because some other cachers took a photo from the road - we did as well! Very nice landscape! TFTC GCA! Clan Cerberus

Snapped this trig while caching in the area.

I was on a trig day today, I wasn't sure if i could walk up here as it looks like PP, so I got a pic from the fence line, I hope its ok.
its been a year since anyone has been here.

08-Dec-13
Found while out doing the final of one of the Great Aussie Icon caches. Looks to be inside private property but the ACTmapi says no. Interesting as I've not known the ACT Govt to put up, or allow, electric fences along it's boundaries. Anyway great views from up here.

TFTT and the Texan.

19-Aug-12
Grabbed the photo from the safety of the fence line....wasn't sure it was on PP or not. Maybe it isn't, so hopefully the photos are ok.

As the weather today looked better to the West decided to do a couple of Trigs in the Stromlo area. This one was short but steep, luckily most of the summer grasses and prickles seem to have died off, easy going to the top. Great views.

20-Mar-11
Well, that was a bit silly. I wasnt wearing my boots today as I was planning a driveby type of afternoon. Didnt realise this trig would be on my route, but when I saw it so close to the road I ventured up. What a lot of grass seeds I got, all through my shoes and socks.

Great views in all directions though, no argument about that!

06-Mar-11
Collected a good assortment of seeds on the way up, but nothing like the thistles on the way down - some of the thistles are almost waist height, have a habit of springing up between your legs as you step over them and can sting through two layers of fabric. Suffice to say I learned my lesson very quickly!

Spent 5 mins clearing my shoes, socks (and other clothing) when I got back to the car. Fantastic views from up there though!

09-Jan-11
As usual I got half way up the hill & led mtrax nicely into a field of thistles - they drew blood on covered legs, so I hate to think how his legs fared in shorts! After enjoying the views at the top & taking the obligatory photos, we made sure to take a more circuitous route back down that was far more thistle-free.

09-Jan-11
I managed to encourage Tealby up to this one only a short walk but plenty of grass seeds to collect and some thistles for good measure, so not sure about a pleasant walk but the down hill path we managed to circumnavigate some of the worst parts but got to the top non-the-less the rain gods where kind to us for this part .

27-Apr-10
A pleasant walk on the first coolish day heading towards winter. I brought my tripod!

25-Mar-10
Last Trig Point of the day and not a bad one for the views. The long thick grass hid quite a few rocks in some areas so I had to watch my step to avoid doing my weak ankle in.

27-Feb-10
Found with Albida and Jusojara. After a steep walk up I met the guys up the top. Great views were to been seen

27-Feb-10
Followed the little trail starting to form up to this trig today with Albida and mr_roo. Fantastic views especially back toward the Cotter.

27-Feb-10
A sharp sharp climb up to this one. Albida.

Left home well before dawn on my Mountain bike, found a couple of caches first, then rode out here, parked the bike then walked up TankEngine's trail of flattened grass. Some nice views - as expected. can see black Mountain to the East and the Brindabellas to the west.

Rode 49km to work on the MTB, found 4 caches, Coooeeeeee.

03-Jan-10
A short sharp climb through long grass, and the views unfolded. I wonder how long until this area is filled with suburbs?
