Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

You will need to purchase parking at the gate; cars: $5.00, motorcycles: $2.00 and buses: $10.00.

This trig point is not the traditional type, it is located inside the Mount Dandenong Sky High gift shop and bistro as a plaque.

You will only be able to access this trig point if the Sky High is open, which according to the website is 7 days a week, including public holidays.

Gates open Monday to Friday 9am-10pm, Weekends 8am-10pm.

We came up here for lunch today. This is probably the easiest Trig I've ever found.

When we left Tasmania just under three weeks ago we had a series of challenges to complete. Completing the requirements for Finding Centroid Mission was not among them as we had to find Dragonzone caches in 23 separate local government zones. Some of these areas had no Dragonzone caches. Things changed after a week caching in The ACT were our finds moved our caching centre north to such an extent that we only needed to find caches in eleven local government areas, three in NSW the rest in Vic.

After a few tweeks to our route south we were able to find caches in the three NSW area. By the time the Alexandra Event had finished we only needed to find a cache in three areas - Nillumbik, Whittlesea and The Yarra Ranges. Today was the day to try and find the three caches we needed.

The Mount Dandenong Trigonometric Station was our first port of call. After paying our $6 entry fee we made our way to the restaurant where we spotted this unique trig marker. We had a chat to the manager behind the counter and he was happy for us to take the requisite photo. There were no other customers at the time so this may have helped. Photos taken we headed outside to collect the data for the nearby Earth cache and to explore the 360 degree views avàilable from the observation deck.

It is well worth a visit to The Dandenong Tower for the views, the walks, the unique art works but most of all for the unique trig point. We now have a find in the Yarra Ranges and only have two local government areas to visit.

I think this is the first trig I have found inside a building. All my family went off to the toilet outside so I came to find this trig. Too awkward to get myself in the photo but I have others to prove we were there.

sharkiefan, ahmoburg and I had had a massive day of collecting caches that have been nominated in the Victorian Cache of the Year Awards. We were quite warm, very tired and in the case of my hip, in a fair bit of pain, so an ice cream was just what was needed and I knew we would be able to get one here, as well as a TP. We had been hiding GeGnomes all day, but I was yet to find a GCA cache for the holiday.

I was quite surprised to find that this TP is inside the building. It was really crowded in here today, but we got the required photo.

Note: The prices have gone up a dollar from the listing on the cache page.

Out and about with LouiseAnn and sharkiefan to find some cache of the year nominated caches as well as to re hide some caches. I had until now, not been to this, my closest trig point to home. Lots of people about up here today.

This month's bushwalk took us to the lofty heights of Mt Dandenong. I knew this trig point was awaiting me and the fact that it was right at the coffee counter was certainly no deterrent Wink. So while I was grabbing a well earned coffee and milkshake, I had my pickie taken at the trig point at 14:00 to cross another one off the list WinkVery Happy.

Thanks PrincessDiala.

I visited here at night and had dinner in the restaurant.
I felt uncomfortable photographing the column so grabbed a snap of the column upstairs with my phone camera as I couldn't find my camera at the time.
Great Views Thanks

30/12/2010 13:27 Found: #151 Loaded up the wife and kids for lunch at sky-high and bonus trig cache! Been many years since I was there last. Sadly the wife was called into work so we had to cut short the walk around, but got a photo with the GPS as per the TRIG. Lovely view and a nice day out. TFTC

An interesting trig point - I've not seen one like this previously. At first I went upstairs, where the restaurant was all locked off, preparing for a function, by the look of things. I took a photo through the window, with my GPSr in the near foreground, of the pole showing the coordinates. I then went downstairs, only to realise that there was another one down there. I have attached both photos. Many thanks to PrincessDiala for listing this interesting TP - it's good to have a reason to visit this place. Cheers!

A trig I would definitely look for - most unusual. Full marks to the business for going to that much detail.

When I add trigs I copy & paste text from an original publication (Sept 09) then add a paragraph to describe my thoughts on the location.

Thanks for adding such an outstanding trig. Clapping

Grrr it got published.

I don't get this - sort of.

I went to Mount Dandenong yesterday and saw this plaque, and then reading stuff, maybe its now not a trig point.... Well not a traditional one anyways.

The bf's family came down for the weekend from Sydney. Sunday was the organised day to do something with them.

They've done all the other stuff more central to the CBD, and I was racking my brain what we could take them to see/do.

Puffing Billy! I've never been on it before, and the bf hasn't either, seemed perfect. There was also this other place I found through geocaching with stacks of birds that come down to feed, and if we had some time, visit the Mount Dandenong Sky High because I've heard the views are awesome there.

So, imagine my surprise when I saw this plaque, I must get a photo!

[Well, I'm not too good at converting DMS into decimal degrees (I end up in the middle of some trees), so I've just got some co-ordinates from Google Earth, if anyone can do it better, please feel free to change the co-ordinates.]
