Description

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

 Additonal Information
This State Trig survey control marker was identified in the SurCom database and consists of a brass disc set into concrete. The official name in SurCom is "Westwood ST1059". Further information about this State Trig can be found from the link Westwood.

This trig point is located on the road verge near the drive way to a property. It was difficult to locate when an attempt was made to confirm it's existence as grass had overgrown the marker. However a friendly farmer knew exactly where the disc was located and assisted with making it visible again.

Logs

Took a little bit of digging with gloves on to uncover the disk but a quick find in the end

I was out and about looking for caches around the Carrick and Hadspen areas and came across this cache which I thought I had logged back in September but I remember when I did that I didn't actually have a photo of proof that I had been there. My GPS is in my phone and my camera is in my phone, so I can only take a shocking selfie to prove this time...hope that is OK.

PS. Might be a few other trigs I may have to revisit Very Happy

Couldn't find this fellow at first until I spotted a depression in the dirt and scraped away the topsoil to reveal the said marker. Requisite picture attached. Thanks.

In the area so couldn't just drive past. Recent rain had the trig point submerged beneath brown sludge. Sloshed the water out to see a flash of red, that'll do me.. thanks.!!

Travelling around Australia and currently in Tasmania.

Today we travelled to the local area of Westbury and stopped in here before heading home.

Lucky for us the grass had been freshly mowed making for a swift find. Clapping

First for the day as we head to Launceston to grab some of the many caches that have been published since our last visit. Took a while to find as it was totally covered with grass. Thanks.

It helps sometimes to sneak around in Tassie Trekkers dust. They do the hard yards unearthing the target, you follow & reap the rewards. Up here a month ago looking lost; today it was easy peasy - though it still needed more gardening.

One of 25 caches we found today as we tick off caches that have been published since our last visit.

We had to unearth the disc to obtain our photographic evidence.

Enjoyed this roadside stop. Friesianess and I were able to fully appreciate the reasons for this trig as the view is surprisingly wide and the day was clear.
