Description

Windsor Observatory TS4796

Official name of this Trig Station as per NSW Department of Lands is: Windsor Observatory.

Serial number is: TS 4796.

Last inspected on: September 9, 1977.

Elevation is: 36 meters.

Passive trig point only, tip of the old observatory building is the aiming point..

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to get to.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on Log this Cache and place an "Archived" log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty / terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

We could see this distinctive building from the playground we stopped at for brekkie on the way out to Kanagra Boyd. What an awesome building and certainly worth the drive up to it.

Wow, this was the find of the day. Loved it and never knew this observatory existed. Too bad it was closed. A note to return one day. I was fascinated.

26-Jul-20
headed out with Outdoornut22 to bag a few quick trigs on a very rainy day but we needed to get out of the house. what a cool trig to finish the day off will have to come again another day when it is open. thanks for all the trigs

While it was bucketing down with rain today both myself and Sophoutloud needed a good excuse to get out of the house, we plotted some more urban trigs that were close to road ways so we didn't have to spend to much time out in the rain. what a great little building will have to come back when they are open and check it out. Well it looks like between 14-01-18 to today the for sale sign has gone up, you can purchase this building & history. Maybe its well out of my price range so I will let others have a look & kick the tyre as they say. Well now to the trig. A morning of short caching / waymarking in the area. Completed also 4 off waymarks here, Grahame Cookie has been very busy here, all the history covered. So thanks for the history & drive out here, a fare bit of history around this area. Clan Griffin

#GA2318 - 08:25; Day two of the Macquarie mayhem cache hunt with Sol de lune and andrewbt. After a big day one with 56 out 59 finds, we were optimistic about another successful day two. A few cold ones, a few logs and a few more claims for the States of the Nation game set the scene for a good night's sleep and a spring in our step as we packed up and hit the trail again today. Hope the CO's are enjoying all the Karma points rolling in as we get through our logs Whistle. This was our first stop today so that abt and I could add this trig to our finds. An easy shot once we reached GZ. TFTT Geocaching Australia Very HappyClan Cerberus

Heading to Ebenezer for the CITO I decided to do a side trip. I have been here with the Photoclub a few years ago. Beautiful old buildings are worth taking time to photograph. Some birdwatching, then headed on.

Great to finally get to this 'previously unheard of Trig' that I saw in mid-2014, and finally messaged Roger [W] that there could be still a trig or two to find, if there was a reason that SIX Maps NSW had it showing near Windsor! [And to find out if "Tebbutt" - TS4303 was 'still in play']
With the gates closed on this wet morning it was hard to get a GOOD photo of the correct point. May come back to get a better one.
Thanks Roger

Great to be brought to another historical building.

Pretty flat out here so I guess no need for it to be too high! Cool location to visit even without a real trig vane.

Have saved up this close to home trig point for this special day. Found after the ANZAC ceremonies in Windsor. Fantastic location that is entrenched with local history - well worth the visit.

The first attempt to locate Windsor Observatory the Navman indicated an across paddock AWD way. A look at the map and a far more reasonable approach was found. A very neat and tidy building and surrounds with green fields opposite
... pristine in the Spring sunshine.

Back in Windsor to meet up with my wife and still had a couple of hours to kill, so a few more finds were on the cards. No problems with this one and the photo was soon in can....

Found this while out caching around Windsor & Freeman's Reach. Not sure if the restaurant is still going, but I played a few gigs here years ago.

I was looking for something a little more TRIGGY, but assumed this was part of the trig based on the coordinates.

The Monkey Girl thought this looked more like a gingerbread house than an observatory.

Out on a Geocaching adventure with pjmpjm, this was an easy one, after all you can't miss a building.
Keep in mind that the passive trig is the smallest of the buildings. The other 2 are later additions.

FTF with rogerw3 today!

Had a bit of a drive around the Windsor/Richmond area.

Amazing to discover that there was another trig that we'd missed.

Four thumbs up for the nice old observatory building and the fun of a trig we didn't expect!
