Description

A Trig Point is a virtual cache which requires a cacher to locate the Trigonometric Station at GZ.

This trig is part of a survey testline made up of seven markers: PM90301 to PM 90307.  It is still in use as it was being utlised by surveyors on the day of discovery.

A trig point (also known as a Trigonometric Station) typically consists of a black disc on top of four metal legs or concrete pillar, resembling a navigation beacon. It is also accompanied by a metal disc, which is located directly below the center point of the tripod or on top of the pillar itself.

Trig points are generally located at the top of hills or points of prominence in the landscape. Many provide unique views and challenges, with some being difficult to access.

These points were regarded as valuable to surveyors, providing reference points for measuring distance and direction, and assisting in the creation of maps.

To log a find on the Geocaching Australia website, you will need to include a picture of the trig point, along with your GPS receiver and (preferably) yourself. Long distance / telephoto type pictures are against the spirit of this cache. You are encouraged to leave a description of your journey in your log to help others in finding the trig point.

The original collection of trig points has been sourced from Geoscience Australia and may contain inaccuracies.

Please respect local laws and regulations when searching for trig points. If you believe that a trig point is located on private property or in a dangerous location, you may archive the cache, by clicking on 'Log this Cache' and placing an 'Archived' log on the Geocaching Australia website.

If you feel that you can add to the description of this trig point or adjust the difficulty/terrain ratings, please feel free to edit this cache and amend the information suitably. Vandalism of the cache description or other information will result in your account being terminated.

We were headed home from a weekend in Katoomba doing some abseiling training, and decided to base the trip across Sydney on trigs, and would see what caches popped up.
We haven't done a testline for a bit, so it became a focus of this morning.... We were wishing we could drive up the park though!

The second lot of test lines I've come across, there's another on the other side of Maitland.

We walked the Bidwell Test Line as our first caching for the day. Two photos have been added to the Gallery for each trig point: Mrs y'stassie next to the trig point marker; the identification plate on the trig point (although some are not clear because they have been painted over). These photos are for PM90305. Thanks for the cache.

This is 1 of 5 trigs completed by a team of 3 – HansJJ & Hookie-1 & Hookie2. We did the walk on a nice Christmas day before Christmas lunch. It was a nice pleasant day as it was nice & cool. The only thing was the fly’s, they were in plague here for what ever reason. Big thanks on this special day. Clan Griffin

Geocaching Australia (GCA) Cache Find Number 1286 - 14312 overall cache finds.

Found the Bidwell Testline after work today during a work trip up in the Penrith region. While I mainly looked for GC caches, when an easy GCA cache comes along we go for that as well. Trigs are particularly nice to track down and find. I was very happy when they became part of the GCA cache family. Its especially satisfying if you have made a big climb up for one ! I have also now joined dragonZone in Clan Cerberus, so there are more reasons to find those GCA caches. Its interesting to find the many different types of trigs. From the traditional metal legs and vanes, to the concrete base with vanes, to the ones on top of water tanks (especialy the red ones !), as well the new CORS type. When you look on a GCA map and see all those hundreds and hundreds of blue 'Z's it shows just how many there are out there. Shame so many are on private property and cannot be accessed at all. So as far as I'm concerned every trig that can be found and photographed is a real bonus !

The trig was quickly 'found'. Piccie taken and posted. Five down two to go.

Thanks Geocaching Australia !

Getting late, and still quite a drive home, with commitments on Saturday morning at Wingham, so made a quick grab of the seven 'trigs' in a row.

Out with JJCC running an errand locally, so we decided to take a morning walk and log the seven local trigs. An enjoyable walk starting at the top of the hill...well worth the visit.

Nice evening for a trig walk. Staying at my brothers not too far away I couldn't resist bagging this line of 7 trigs on my way home from work. Started at the top of the hill and walked down.

I was working close by so I thought I'd do this walk on the way back. Lots of different graffiti tags on each trig. Great to get so many in one fell swoop!

A walk in the heat of a February afternoon for this near kilometre stretch of the seven Bidwill Testline trigs. Back up to the rise to Luxford Road with the trig line now clearly on display. Very Happy

Being in the area this morning I stopped here to walk the line of trigs. There were surveyors in attendance as well. Apparently this test line of seven trigs is set up so Surveyors can bench test to calibrate their gear. They have a requirement to do this at least once a year.

A pleasant walk up the incline to collect the seven then a down hill walk back to the car.

Started the day with the intention with going up the mountains but with rain further up the mountains decided to come here instead with alnic39 and find the trigs along the testline here. Decided to start at the top end and work our way down. What a great view of the long line of white pillars in both directions. It doesn't appear that they have been here for a long time but in that period the white pillars were too much to resist and so they have been tagged. So we know Rebekah was here. Don't know why people have to do that. Thanks for locating these.

Found this survey test line I spotted from Luxford Road. Spotted one of them and thought it wasn't a trig as it was too low but on further inspection discovered it was a testline of seven. Even more amazing was that surveyors were using it on the day of my visit. Got some photos of that. Worth a look. Will publish all seven as I go.
