Gallery of log for Historic Site: St John's Orphanage

This cache is quite a significant one for me. My father and his brothers were sent here when my dad was about 4yo. The family had fallen on hard times and they spent at least a year here. My dad's father came to visit, took the three older ones (including my dad) out on a day visit and just kept walking. They walked to Canberra, then down to Batemans Bay and on to Omeo, Victoria where they had family. My dad was only 5yo and he walked the whole way too. He remembers walking across Lake George when it was very dry with no water in the lake. Unfortunately the youngest brother, my Uncle Jack, did not go with them as he was too young to make the walk, and he died of malnutrition and lack of care when he was sick after the older boys had left. My dad blamed himself all his life for his brother's death as Jack had pleaded to be taken with them. Hard times indeed. So standing here today, looking at this old wreck of a building, brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for the cache though and your story. It was good to read other logs where others had a more positive memory of the place.
