Having worked for Civil Aviation for 30 years Daly Waters was always THAT remote outpost we could be posted to which everyone dreaded. Wives became pregnant, along with many exotic diseases announced for the prevention of a transfer.
One day in 1970 I was at the front bar [a little different to its current layout], when the local constabulary walked in, thumped a fellow at the bar and carried him out.
Mind you in those days Deaf Adders were the big issue with a story of one falling from atop a door and falling onto the shoulders of the person walking beneath.
I don't recall anyone being bitten though.
The airport in those early days before the opening of Tindal was the "alternate" for planes flying into Darwin, so it was not without its intrinsic value.
