Logs for Bearzilla

26-May-05
The red, blue and green microcaches all seem to be missing, moved or buried. Sorry, but RAIC can't tolerate this degree of failure! I'm disabling this cache until I get a chance to re-deploy the microcaches.

25-May-05
I checked today and the cache is still there.

05-Nov-03
Unfortunately, this cache has gone so I'm archiving it.

22-Aug-03
The cache is still there.

03-Jan-03
I checked this cache this morning and it's still there.

EcoTeam: it sounds like you're in the right area, you'll just need to look harder next time Smile

28-Dec-02
After several reports of water in this cache, I went and had a look at it. It wasn't as bad as I though it'd be, especially after spending so long under water; However, there was water in it and some of the swaps had suffered a bit. I've relocated the cache to a spot that is, hopefully, above the high tide mark, although it's still only accessable at low tide. A couple of the swaps had also been damaged when crammed into the container, so I've removed everything but the log book and I'm making this cache a log only cache. The log book has been triple bagged just in case I'm wrong about the high tide mark Smile

08-Dec-02
Managed to park within 150 metres of this and followed the track to within 10 metres or so of the cache. A quick bush bash and rock hop and I was there. Took a CD case and left a couple of water pistols.

No snakes or mountain bikers spotted.

Good one Leek!

I used to work just on the other side of the park, so getting here wasn't a problem. Parking was easy, but avoiding the suspicious neighbours was a bit trickier. Didn't have any elephants with me, but left an alien to keep the ones there company.

Good one Jo!

Forgot to even turn the GPSr on for this one! The dragon was still guarding the cache, but after a prolonged battle I managed to vanquish it and retreat the treasure. Took a stapler and left a dog.

Good one Leek!

Thought I was going to have to go swimming to get around to this one considering how high the tide was. Changed my approach and found it. Took sunglass repair kit (OK, it's an eyeglass repair kit, but I don't wear glasses!) and left a super ball.

06-Dec-02
Cleaned out all my old software just recently, but managed to find something. Didn't take anything, left Persistance of Vision ray tracing CD from 1995. There was a distict stench of MicroSoft coming from this cache, so also dropped in some OpenOffice.org CDs (http://www.openoffice.org) to try and counteract it Smile

Urban Bear
UNIX bigot and proud of it!

Circled this one a couple of time before decided I'd have to do a bit of scramble up. Didn't turn out to be as bad as I though. Didn't swap anything as I had nothing that would fit.

06-Oct-02
Monday was the Sydney Geocachers picnic day. Unfortunately, the invitations must have gone astray as only Alternate Route, Scubadoo, GandT and me turned up Smile.

Alternate Route, Scubadoo and me were busy walking in circles (the dance part of the festivities) when GandT turned up and found the co-ordinates straight away!

Decided to tackle the rest of the cache another day and left the others to the race.

Good to meet you all!

I've been down this way a few times before but I've always forgotten to bring a torch. I was heading down again because I remembered a good spot to hide a cache and actually managed to remember the torch.

To be true to the cache, I tried to get my GPS to read exactly the co-ordinates of this cache, but it's a rather tricky thing to do. Got close though -- see photo.

Two of the guns were accessable, but one of them was fenced off. Maybe they're recommissioning it in these trouble times. The letters on the fence were NPWS, which I assume is the NSW Projective Weapons Squad.

Good one Piggies.

PS. The good spot for the cache I was heading for is no longer the isolated beach I found before, but have close to a dozen boats anchored off it. Oh well, I'll have to go somewhere else.

Note: The link to the Real Audio version isn't working (at least when I tried it). It's been just over a year since the interview was aired so maybe they've removed it?! Anyway, the text version is still there. Certainly an interesting story.

Last time I tried this one there were enough spiders to turn anyone into an arachnophobic. Those that did Leafy when it first was placed will know what I mean. This time there were no spiders but did come across a couple of snakes. Tally from the trip: two startled snakes and one startled Bear.

Managed to end up on the correct side of the creek for once (more by luck than anything else), but for a while I though I'd gotten it wrong again. GPSr was reading 30 metres away from the cache, but remembering that Leek and Swampgecko had said the same thing, I hunted around where I was. Looked up in the trees and saw a nest so I figured I was close. Found it without too much trouble after that.

Swapped R2D2 (robots don't like swamps) for a relaxation CD (you'll need it after this).

When I got home I checked the co-ordinates that I'd taken with those that Leek had taken and I found mine were spot on with his -- only 0.001 out.

Mind Socket,

Oops! Sorry about that. I didn't realise I'd already passed WP 3 when I met you Red Face

Been meaning to get around to this one for a while. Decided to do this on the spur of the moment as I was driving past. There seemed to be some sort of fair on and I thought I wouldn't get anywhere near it. Luckily the cache was far enough away that there was nobody close. The cache is certainly chockers! Didn't have anything on me as hadn't planned the trip so took nothing and left nothing.

14-Sep-02
Well, my most unusual caching expedition so far. After waiting for GZ to clear of people, hunted around but GPSr just refused to settle. Looked in all the obvious spots but no joy. Decided to call it quits and thought I'd go for a walk down the trail just to check it out. As I was wandering along, I recalled Leek's words, stopped and, surprise, surprise, there was way point three. Sheer dumb luck Smile.

Headed off to the cache and, once again keeping Leek's words in mind, managed to narrow down the search area and came across the cache fairly quickly (very sneaky!). I'd just put Leek's phone number into my mobile when it rang -- it was Leek! Quickly looked around for someone staring down at me, but no, Leek was on the way to one of my caches and he was going to drop off the lens I'd dropped at Tiny Shiny. Leak did a quick U-turn and headed back to the park to meet me.

On the way back to the park, I ran into Mind Socket on his way in. Caching Central Smile. Got back to the park and there was Leek. He showed me where waypoint 1 was; I'd looked there but had missed it. Doh!

Good to meet both Leek and Mind Socket and thanks to Leek for returning the lens.

A most frustrating and enjoyable cache. Thanks Leek!

Ah, you know it's getting close to summer in Sydney (cough) when you wake up to a pall of bush fire smoke (cough) covering the land and the skys are that beautiful shade of brown (cough).

Had to head over to Brookie to pick up some bits for the BearMobile, so detoured to this one on the way home. Took longer to get into the area than I was expecting, and I knew it was going to take even longer to get out again. It doesn't look that hard on the street directory...Smile

It's certainly a magnificent spot for a cache...if only there was one there Smile. Had an appointment so only managed to get in about 30 minutes of searching, but didn't find the cache. Found the thong graveyard at GZ, lots of cans, jars and bottles. For a spot that's reasonably out of the way, there's a remarkable number of people coming and going: ran into two fishermen on my way there; there was a couple of guys walking around the area when I got there; on the way out passed four guys just starting on the trail.

I'll definately head back in there with my camera, even if the cache has gone. Thanks 2 Dogs for a great location and a most enjoyable morning walk.

Bear

PS. I was only 5 minutes late for my appointment Smile

Yes, but the secondary is still in its virginal state...

Leek, you can claim as many points as you want for this one; gettting geocaching.com to accept them is another matter Smile. I guess you'll just have to settle for finding a virgin (cache) Wink.

Managed to find this one quite quickly, thanks to the clues the other provided. Signed the scroll and stuck on a tiny shiny bear sticker.

I was just about to put it back when some people started coming down. Thought they may have been cachers but they were a family going out to one of the boats. Tried not to look too suspicious which was quite difficult given the situation (just passing, thought I'd drop in!) and while they were occupied with getting the dinghy into the water, snuck the cache back into it's hidey hole and left.

After the first attempt I wasn't sure if this cache was going to remain unfound for the next 30 years. However, found it quickly.
While looking for the Bogle-Chandler Mystery Cache, I was shocked to stumble across a golf ball. Uncertain what to do, I took it with me, but maybe I should call the police.
Took some ear plugs and left a pack of cards.
Thanks Doggies for your efforts on this one.

Parked up the street and walked down to this one. As I got close things looked bad: the place looked like a construction zone with fencing and huts having been put up. As I rounded the fence I saw that the relics themselves were still accessable, but there does seem to have been a lot of ground work done with areas dug up and roped off.

GPSr refused to settle down. Just as it looked like it was zeroing in on GZ, it'd suddenly jump 100+ metres away so I ended up chasing my tail around in circles for a while. After dropping my camera for the second time this weekend onto something camera-hostile (ie. concrete), I figured the GPS Gods weren't smiling on me so I abandoned my search for this one.

06-Sep-02
Been meaning to get up to this one for ages. Since the weather was so nice I decided to head off looking for it.

Found it in good condition. Took bear keyring (of course!) and left a parachuting guy.

It was tempting to continue along the trail and see where it took me, but left that for another day.

Thanks Snifter

Found this after coming across the many decoys scattered around the place. As others have said, it's a shame about all the rubbish, but still a great spot.

Contents of the cache were damp although there was no water in it. I think it needs a good airing out to dry it off but didn't have the time.

Took a stamping kit and left a writing pad (sealed in plastic)

Thanks 2 Dogs.

Searched for a while before Guru & Shaz turned up. Continued searching for a while before giving up and leaving G&S to it. Hopefully they made better progress than me.

30-Aug-02

I'm not a dad, but I'm an uncle of two. As there's no Uncle's day this will have to do!

Couldn't decide which side to approach from, so picked the least obvious, waved hello to my altma mater and set of. Got close and spotted a bridge, so it wouldn't matter if I was on the wrong side. Unfortunately the bridge was closed, but luckily the water level was low, so a quick bit or rock hopping brough me to the correct side.

Having been shopping this morning, I was stocked up with goodies to swap. Of course, I left them in the car, so rumaged around my bag and found a smiley face fridge magnet to swap for some pens.

25-Aug-02

Managed to find this one without too much trouble -- although that was probably more luck that anything else. The GPS reading was all over the place, but after letting it average for a couple of minutes it was fairly close.

Left a parachuting guy and took a shark toy. Dunno who left the shark toy there but it made me laugh!

Good one Leek!

What a great place. Had an easy walk, reading all the info, before heading off up the road to find the cache itself. No problem with the cache as there was nobody around, despite being a sunday. Ran out of things to swap so took nothing and left nothing.
Good one Ropes!

Know this place well and didn't even need to use the GPS. Not a bride or groom in sight, but plenty of people soaking up the rays.
Casually leant on the door taking photos of the Coat Hanger and while no-one was looking quickly retrieved the cache and snuck off to open it. Used the same tactic to put it back but had to wait for one guy to move from right in front of it.

Found cache number 1 without too much trouble. Being as subtle as only a large Bear crashing through the woods can be, I managed to only draw a few suspicious looks.

Found cache number 2 quickly. No people hanging around so no problem sticking my nose into all those nooks and cranies.

Cache number 3 - Argh! Had to head home to sort this one out as I don't know if there's anywhere local that could have helped. This took a while as I live north of the Harbour and by the time I figured it out and got back to the cache it was dark. I decided not to risk life and limb looking for it so braved the drizzle on Sunday morning only to find the IdeoGuys had been there first. Would have given AlternateRoute a call but it was early (ie. morning), cold and wet and I figured anyone with any sense would still be warm and cosy in bed.
